February 2014 Parents: We are sending this letter as a friendly reminder to be mindful of the severe food allergies throughout the district. If your student is in a peanut/nut-free classroom, please continue to send fresh fruits, vegetables, and pre-packaged snacks, OR follow your current classroom snack procedure. Reading the ingredient label is the best way to know if a product is a “safe” snack. Some products may not have any nuts listed in the ingredient label, but may indicate “made in a facility or on equipment with peanuts/nuts. These are NOT safe snacks! Please see the attached sheet on “How To Read an Allergy Label” and continue to follow these procedures: • Do NOT send snacks that contain peanuts or peanut products to school. (This includes granola bars) . Snacks have to be brought in their ORIGINAL packaging • If your child has peanut products for breakfast or lunch, PLEASE WASH THEIR HANDS AND FACE BEFORE COMING TO SCHOOL, to prevent crosscontamination. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students safe at school! Please feel free to call us with any questions or concerns. Elisa Bundy, BSN, RN Health Services Coordinator 847-543-5834

Easy Ways You Can Help Raise Funds for Avon! Target REDcards (Avon recently received a check from Target for over $500 through the following program!) How? Use your Target REDcard when you are doing your normal shopping at Target, and designate Avon through their Take Charge of Education program-this provides Avon with much needed funds . If you already have a Target REDcard, you can participate in the Take Charge of Education program and help our school! Target donates up to 1% of purchases made using the REDcard to eligible K-12 schools designated by Target consumers. Avon has received over $7,052.74 over the past few years through this giving program. If you are interested in designating Avon on your REDcard, go to Target.com/tcoe and click on the “enroll  now” link, then enter our School ID (46818); this  will  lead  you  to  Avon’s  information  page. Click  on  “designate  school”  where  you  will   then be asked for your information and REDcard number. Please note that Avon is listed as Avon Center Elementary and our School ID is 46818. If  you  don’t  yet  have  a  REDcard, you can go to Target and apply for one directly, or you can apply online at Target.com. If you apply in store, you can take our school ID (46818) and they can add that to your application the same day. Or, once you have your REDcard number, you can designate our school online at Target.com/tcoe. To learn more about designating Avon, applying for a REDcard, or about the program, visit www.Target.com/tcoe or call 1-800-316-6142.

Abbott  Labs’  Employee Giving Campaign Do you or someone in your extended family work at Abbott Laboratories? The Avon Office would like to tell you of a way you can help support Avon. Each year in the fall at Abbott, there is an Employee Giving Campaign, where Abbott will donate matching funds to donations made by its employees. You can designate Avon School as your recipient organization, and help raise needed funds for our school!

Recently in Art Kindergarten:

Mrs. Johnson’s PM class has art each Wednesday. We have been learning about the collage process and practicing our cutting skills. We continue to study shapes and

how to use them in our art. Our recent winter tree collage helped to teach students about size progresssion as well by having them to cut small medium and large triangles for their picture. The class really enjoyed using the shimmer paint to give the snow a little sparkle.

Aldo

Steven

1 st Grade: First graders have been learning about texture and how to cut symmetrical heart

shapes. We added visual texture to colored papers using texture rubbing plates. This can be challenging for 1st graders so many chose to work with a partner for this step. Next we will cut small, medium, and large heart shapes.

Maylin

Quinna

Daisy

2 nd Grade:

Second graders were recently intorduced to one of the world’s most famous artists, Vincent Van Gogh! We are going to use Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” painting as

inspiration for our own artworks. Our goal for the next project will be to

create a landscape that with implied movement and clearly shows foreground, middle ground,

background and a horizon line.

“Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh

3 rd Grade:

Third graders have missed a couple of art classes due to the extreme cold weather

school cancelations. We are working very hard to finish up our story quilts. Our last

step is to create the patchwork-style border around the edge of the image. This project incorporates math and language arts skills in addition to visual arts.

4 th grade:

Fourth graders have been hard at work creating their Expressive

Stick Figures! We learned a little bit about African masks, how to

create textured, symmetrical masks using clay, and we are using an

assmeblage process to put the whole thing together. Many of these will be featured during the Spring Showcase on April 23rd.

Message from an Artist: Painting is just another way of keeping a diary. ~Pablo Picasso! Sincerely,

Mrs. Kimberly Butts Avon Art Teacher
