Note from the DirectorThanks to all of you, the summer projects are coming along very well. The Manor House is almost finished and looks great! The Le Roy family has moved in and the punch list has been very small. Bob Speelman and Henry Kingma will be putting the finishing touches on the house with some new landscaping in the next couple of weeks. The Dice Museum, the Beta Apartment Complex, and 2041 Raybrook remodeling projects are also coming along very well. The new chiller is up and running. We are having a very productive and successful summer. Recently I have gotten a couple of nice notes from people on campus about the work we do. I like to print them in this Director’s note so you may all see them. In June, Dale Cooper wrote: “From our house at 3230 Burton, Marcia and I have a window on the campus, so to speak. How beautiful it looks! It’s stunning. So many people from your sector have done so much to make this campus a showcase. You and the entire team of folks in your department are what Henry De Wit once called “million dollar people”. But you are unheralded, under-acknowledged people too. So let Marcia and me be among those who pause to make mention of the gifts you all bring to our Calvin community, and tell you our thanks. Thank you, we also thank our God for you. Every Blessing, Dale Cooper”. I also just received this email from Debra Bossenbroek, Assistant professor of Nursing. She writes: “Just a quick note, long overdue, to let you know that the Science Building Supervisors, Tom Diepstra and Tim Bakelaar are excellent in their work and mentoring students as well as caring for staff. Last school year there was a leak in the office next to mine that drained into my office. SB 281. They worked hard and quickly to find and remedy the cause. I also appreciate their care in preventing/cleaning mold, as well as the workers who replaced the carpet, etc. Thank you again Tom and Tim! Blessings for 2012-2013! Debra”. Thanks again to all of you for your excellent work!

Coffee with President & Mrs. Le Roy On August 1, 2012 the Physical Plant happily welcomed President Michael Le Roy and his wife Andrea to the Service Building for coffee and donuts. The employees of the Physical Plant had a lot of fun getting to know the new president and his wife!

Epsilon 13: Fire Damage On July 20th, there was a fire in Theta Epsilon which was the direct result of unattended cooking. Jack Phillips and Don Winkle were a couple of the first responders on site. Damage is estimated to exceed $32,000. Physical Plant is working with a local restoration company to try and rebuild the kitchen by the start of the school year. Carpet, paint, appliances, cabinetry, drywall and lighting are some of the trades affected. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt during the fire.

Dice Mineralogical Museum As the Dice Mineralogical Museum project comes to a close, some of the rocks, minerals and precious stones are starting to arrive on-site. Below are several samples of what will be displayed in the museum. Currently, the Physical Plant is working on finishing up the custom cabinetry and other fine woodwork, the security system, flooring, lighting and other

Brian Koster: Thank You! The entire Physical Plant would like to offer a heartfelt “Thank You” to Brian Koster for his years of selfless service at Calvin College. Brian has been working fulltime for the Physical Plant since his years as a student here. This spring he was accepted into graduate school. We are excited as Brian starts this new chapter in his life, yet saddened to lose him as a fellow staff member and friend. We’ll miss you Brian, God Bless!!

final details. Over the next month, specimens will continue to arrive, be cataloged and placed in the museum quality display cases. The mineral museum is scheduled to open to the public in early October. Please stop by and enjoy the new space!

Focus on...Travis House The Travis Street House is located on the northeast side of Grand Rapids in the Creston Neighborhood. Creston has long been an ethnically diverse, working class neighborhood. The house was owned by the Gordon Family (of Gordon Foods) who had a desire to preserve the house for future generations. They approached Calvin College and donated the house to Calvin. Students who live in the Travis Street House have the opportunity to serve in the neighborhood through tutoring at Creston High school and Palmer Elementary. Many students also volunteer at the St. Alphonsus Food Panty. This summer, Calvin launched an experiential orientation called The Urban Experience that introduced six female freshmen students to the Creston neighborhood and the city of Grand Rapids. The women lived at the Travis house for the week, helped out at the St. Alphonsus Food Pantry, volunteered with house clean-ups through the New Development Corporation, and learned about the community garden and urban farming. This fall there will be six students living at the Travis House, with house mentor Adam Van Gelder.

Staff Outing: September 13, 2012

This year’s Physical Plant Staff Outing will be held at the Christian Reformed Recreation Center on Thursday, September 13th. Physical Plant full and part-time staff are encouraged to come for lunch, golf and a Corn Hole Tournament! If you’re interested in playing in the Corn Hole Tournament, please sign up in two person teams at the Physical Plant front desk by September 7th. A bracket style tournament will be held and prizes will be awarded to the winners!!!

7/20/12- Power Outage On July 20th, (the same day as the Epsilon 13 apartment fire!) the entire East campus lost power. It is believed that the power outage is the result of a surge from Consumers Power. Despite our requests for more information, Consumers Power has not responded with possible causes of this outage. The Physical Plant Mechanical Staff did a great job in working to diagnose the problem, informing the Calvin community of the issue and

safely getting the power restored to campus. In the case of future unplanned power outages, please direct all questions to the Director of the Physical Plant or the Physical Plant front desk. Please do not call the Mechanical AD, lead electricians or other mechanical staff as those staff members need to remain focused on resolving the problem. Please exit all buildings and wait for further instructions.

Beta Remodel

The Beta Remodel is coming to a close. Inspections are scheduled for mid August, and furniture is slated to arrive on August 17th. The Grounds department has begun the site work and landscaping. Several old, dilapidated sidewalks will be replaced, and a new path with be added to the North of the apartment. Even with the short schedule and large scope of work, the entire Physical Plant has again done a great job of completing a project on time and in budget all while maintaining very high standards of construction!

Healthy Habits Your quarterly Healthy Habits incentives (up to $300 per year) begin with completion of Priority Health’s online Health Quotient (HQ) questionnaire. Complete your questionnaire by September 30 and: 1. Receive one of two credits required for the $75 incentive for Quarter 1 (July-September). 2. Be eligible for prize drawings, including an iPad, Kindle Fire and several Calvin Campus Store items. If you are familiar with logging into your personal record on Priority Health's website and accessing the questionnaire, click the following link: If you are new to Healthy Habits or for step-by-step questionnaire instructions and helpful links, go to pe/healthyhabits/incentives.htm. HELPFUL INFORMATION. Your questionnaire will reflect the most accurate results if you gather the following information prior to accessing the questionnaire: - Most recent blood pressure reading. - Most recent lab results (cholesterol, HDL, LDL, glucose). - Date of your most recent preventive screenings (if applicable), such as physical exam, colonoscopy, dental cleaning, flu shot and vision exam. NEW THIS YEAR: Get your spouse to complete their online HQ questionnaire and receive an additional 1/2 credit towards your quarterly incentive.* Spouses who complete their questionnaire by September 30 will be eligible for separate prize drawings for an iPad, Kindle Fire and Campus Store items. Don’t wait until the last minute. September can be extra busy for many of us. Complete your HQ questionnaire today! *This option does not apply to spouses who work at Calvin and who are also eligible for quarterly incentives.

Primary Updates Over the last several years the power requirements of the college have continually increased. The main electrical power cables serving the campus are rated at 300 Amps, and the draw on the Calvin power is very

close to 300 Amps. Therefore, the size of the power cables need to be sized up to cables rated at 600 Amps. Calvin Physical Plant staff, with Consumers Energy staff, will be replacing about 100 feet each of un-

derground power cables for each of the three phases of power from the Consumers Energy substation to the Calvin College substation. Calvin will also replace and upgrade the three current transformers to 600 Amps, which were part of the problem of the first power failure earlier this summer. The Mechanical Department is also adding two 4 conduits underneath the East Beltline to allow for redundancy and future expansion of the East Campus power supply. Great Job Calvin College Mechanical Department!

Sustainability Series: Library The Physical Plant has again partnered with the CERF (Calvin Energy Recovery Fund) to replace outdated and energy inefficient light fixtures on campus. Physical Plant requested proposals from three local contractors to assist with the T-12 fixture replacement in the Hekman Library. The project was awarded to Midwest Energy Group. Fixture replacement is expected to be complete by Labor Day. Physical Plant Mechanical Department is also currently working on replacing hundreds of out dated T-12 fixtures in Heimenga Hall. Both projects will take advantage of rebates offered by Consumers Energy. Rebates are expected to exceed several thousand dollars.

1320 E. Beltline In May 2012, Physical Plant was directed to proceed with the planning and design of the 1320 E. Beltline building. Since May, funding was made available to begin interior construction of the building. You may recall that the building has no interior walls, electrical service, HVAC systems or raised flooring. In the picture below of a raised flooring system, notice that electrical, communications, heating and cooling are all

supplied via the floor plenum. Calvin has one other raised floor on campus, located in the main server room of the library. Currently, requests for proposals are being sought from local sub-contractors. The Physical Plant will oversee the construction, scheduled to begin in mid September. The building will be used as a for-profit property similar to the Weyhill Building.
