Our cover photograph is of the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail by Rod Schwartz. Born and raised in Chicago, Rod Schwartz moved with his wife and daughters to the Palouse in 1979. In addition to his work in radio advertising, Rod is an avid photographer who enjoys capturing our distinctive Palouse landscapes and attractions in photographs. His images have been featured in regional magazines, tourism brochures and publications, calendars, etc. In 2005, Rod coproduced and narrated the DVD video, “O Palouse! Palouse Hills, Niels Nielsen

Welcome

WELCOME TO PULLMAN

Discovered in 1805 by Lewis and Clark, the Palouse is a geologic wonder unlike any other area. Mesmerizing beauty and a sweeping landscape of rolling hills and plateaus greet visitors to this distinctive region north of the Snake River in southeast Washington and north central Idaho. A drive through the Palouse elicits “oohs and ahh’s”. “Vast golden waves of wheat fields, some wheat already cut, with the curving lines of combine tracks, give one the feeling of traveling through a Van Gogh painting” said freelance writer Alison Highberger. This is the place to enjoy low traffic roads sprinkled with antique shops and wineries, and easy access to hiking, biking, and above all, photography.

We welcome you to play, stay and grow on the picture perfect Palouse. Travel the serpentine blacktop of the Palouse Scenic Byway, perfect for motorcycle touring. Foodies, be sure to visit the National Lentil Festival in August, named in 2013 by Tripadvisor as a Wacky Summer Festival. For more information about Pullman visit pullmanchamber.com. For information about the Palouse Scenic Byway, including photos and day trip suggestions, visit palousescenicbyway.com. For information about the National Lentil Festival check out lentilfest.com. Palouse

Colfax

Just 15 minutes north of Pullman lays a thriving art community called Palouse. Known for charming antique and gift shops, small cafes and bakeries, it’s a great stop or destination. Public restrooms are conveniently located downtown and they also have the Palouse RV Park. Plan your visit Thursday through Saturday, when most businesses are open.

A community that is alive with small town friendliness and serves as the county seat. Colfax was named in honor of Schuyler Colfax, who was vice president during President U.S. Grant’s first administration (1869-73). James A. Perkins was cofounder and first permanent resident of Colfax. Shortly after his arrival in 1870, he began building a log cabin in which the first Republican convention in the county was held in 1872. Now feel free to drive through town and stop for coffee or a meal at one of their restaurants or play a round of golf at a beautiful 9 hole course situated on the Palouse River.

Photographic opportunities are endless both at nearby Kamiak Butte County Park or in town. History buffs and those that would like to learn more can visit the Roy M. Chatters Newspaper and Printing Museum, which has the largest archived collection of Whitman County are newspapers and the equipment once used to print them. The museum also houses a great deal of Palouse’s local history in photos and artifacts.

Visit the 1884 Perkins Family Home, a beautiful Victorian style refurbished mansion that is an important historical landmark and is open to the public. On the last Sunday in June they host an oldfashioned ice cream social on the lawn.

Colton The Colton story began in 1878 when L.J. Wolford, Roy Woodworth and Dr. Cole, being dissatisfied with the proprietor of Uniontown, decided to found a town of their own. The name came from the first three latters of Dr. Cole’s last name and the last three letters of Mr. Wolford’s son, Clinton. Visit St. Gall’s Catholic Church built in 1905 and retains the original architecture and stained glass windows. Stop in Dave’s Golf and Guns, or schedule some target practice at the Colton Gun Club. Colton is famous for its holiday lights which can be viewed from the comfort of your car anytime in December.

Uniontown Settled by German immigrants from Minnesota in the 1870s’, Uniontown offers a great experience for those who stop. When the Dahmen Barn was donated to the community in 2004, volunteers rolled up their sleeves and donated over 5000 hours to transform the building into an artisan center. Located behind the famous fence of over 1000 iron wheels, this fully accessible facility provides studio space for artists and also hosts live performances, special artist receptions and offers classes and workshops. Be sure to get up close and personal to Wheeletta Wholesteele, the larger-thanlife metal cow sculpture adjacent to the highway. Stop in and see St. Boniface Church, the first consecrated Catholic church in the state of Washington. It houses the original five altars, statues, stained glass, stenciled décor and oil painted Stations of the Cross. Tours are available. Pick up some coffee and fresh baked goodies at the New Sage Bakery. Enjoy lunch at the Uniontown Deli or try one of the special sundaes at the Green Parrot Ice Cream Parlor. A great stop for treasure hunting with half a dozen antique and second hand shops. Afterwards, sample some wines at the Vineyard Vault. They offer tastings of wine from around Washington State including some hard to find varieties. More history, details about businesses, services and events can be found at uniontown.us

EAST—Troy & Genesee in Idaho

Troy

Originally known as Huff’s Gulch the city was renamed after John P Vollmer, a very successful businessman. But in 1897, the citizens rebelled against having their village named after a man who owned more than 32,000 acres of land, much of it gained by foreclosing on bank loans. A Greek railroad worker suggested “Troy”, the name of “the most illustrious city in the world”, and backed it with an offer of a drink of whiskey for everyone who would vote to change the name. Today the community is a fun place for visitors to make a pit stop and check out local shops, take a picnic to the park, or enjoy the Latah Trail that connects Troy to Moscow. For more information, please visit troyidaho.net

Genesee Originally a village that grew up about a mile east of the present town in 1872, the town was relocated to where the Spokane and Palouse Railway built its terminus. Genesee was an important shipping point for cattle, hogs, hay and grain and apples. Visitors can enjoy historic buildings and shop at Maiden America, also known as the “Little Pink House Gallery”. Take a trip back in time at White Springs Ranch, a national historic site. The original log cabin is from 1876 and the farm house was completed in 1904. Call (208) 416-1006 for more information.

Chamber Directory

GreetingS and welcome to Pullman!

We are very fortunate to live in a city that has excellent leadership that strives for prosperity of business, technology, education, health care, culture and entertainment. As we prepare for opportunities in 2014, it is important to take a moment and reflect on the positive growth and achievements that have been recognized in Pullman coinciding with the Chamber’s Vision “Making Pullman a better place to live, work and do business”.

LEADERSHIP A walk around Pullman and a visit to local businesses quickly makes one realize Pullman is rich in both leadership and history. Our Fire, Police and City of Pullman officials have done an excellent job in managing and leading Pullman, making it a safe place to live and do business. Private sector leadership with our small businesses around town, science and technology businesses in the Pullman Port district and our agricultural partners on the Palouse have improved employment through continued innovation. Educational leadership and direction remains very strong and focused in Pullman within the Pullman School District, Washington State University and Spokane Falls Community College. Finally, it is important to recognize the leadership existing in a variety of Pullman nonprofit agencies and organizations that serve Pullman’s interests. They are often the silent ‘back bone’ of our City. EDUCATION Pullman is home to Washington State University of the Pac 12 conference creating a unique relationship as the student population makes up the majority of the 31,000 Pullman population. WSU is a leading land grant university attracting new Pullman residents from across the globe seeking undergraduate and graduate studies. The Pullman School District, another strong educational partner in Pullman, passed a $5.3 million levy in ‘13 that will result in future improvements to Franklin Elementary and new construction and modernization of the Pullman High School improving student safety and educational efficiency. Finally, Spokane Falls Community College (operating in Gladish Community and Cultural Center), offers additional educational opportunities for those seeking expanded education. EVENTS/ENTERTAINMENT Pullman is rich and diverse in entertainment and events that take place throughout the year. In addition to athletic events at WSU and Pullman High School, there are a number of annual events that draw interests from well beyond our Washington State borders including The National Lentil Festival and Pullman’s 4th of July Celebration now in their 26 and 37 years, respectively. In addition to these major events, there continues to be an increase in number of additional events taking place monthly in the Arts and Theatre from both local and distant entertainers. Our community leaders continue to increase entertainment activities that benefit our Pullman culture. DEVELOPMENT Pullman has experienced a number of new and advancing commercial developments over the past 12 months

including SEL’s new Zocholl Engineering building, the new Brelsford WSU Visitor Center, the development of The Palouse Business Center, expansion in student housing both on and off campus, construction/expansion of two regional banks and the addition of retail business. These are just a few areas that will continue to drive the prosperity of our economy and employment. The Chamber of Commerce is excited to promote and be a part of the success and prosperity of businesses and individuals in the City of Pullman. We welcome your ideas, your comments and your success! Douglas A. Cox, President Pullman Chamber of Commerce

Rod Schwartz

History Located at the junction of three streams (South Fork of the Palouse River, Missouri Flat Creek and Dry Creek) in what is now the downtown area Pullman (first known as “Three Forks”) has a rich history going back to the 1870’s. First on the site was Bolin Farr from Missouri who settled on present day Park Street and later built a house there. Second was Daniel McKenzie who came in 1877 and built a small home approximately on the present day location of the Manor Lodge on Paradise Street. In 1881 Farr and McKenzie platted the town site. The town’s application for a post office called “South Palouse” was rejected by the Post Office Department. The next application with the town name of Pullman was accepted. One theory is that the adopted name came from George Pullman, the king of the great railroad sleeping car. When informed of the town’s action, the railroad magnate reportedly donated $50 to start a city library.

Sitting in Tulips, Shirley Jess

Soon after, McKenzie invited Mark True to come from Moscow and establish a hotel here. The result was the Palace Hotel located on the southeast corner of Paradise and Kamiaken Streets. The town’s first artesian well was discovered while drilling a well for the hotel. These wells soon attracted newcomers to the area. Railroads came from the west and the north and the town grew and incorporated in 1888.

Pullman Parks

Richard Palmer

After Washington gained statehood in 1888, there was fierce competition among the towns east of the Cascades to be the location of the land grant college. The award went to Pullman, the “Artesian City”, and the town was forever changed. The Washington State College was established on the northeast part of Pullman in 1889 opening with 21 students, and the town entered a new era. That small school is now Washington State University with branches in other parts of the state.
