N EW NEW PE N TECOST PENTECOST The Upper Room during a global pandemic

OUR MISSIO N Catholic Christian Outreach™ is a university student movement dedicated to evangelization. We challenge young adults to live in the fullness of the Catholic faith with a strong emphasis on becoming leaders in the renewal of the world. Our goal is to share the message of Jesus and to spread His mission. This mission is to form Catholics who, through the empowerment and inspiration of the Holy Spirit, equip and send others to proclaim Jesus. The methods and materials CCO™ uses on campus have expanded to other countries, languages and contexts (parishes and dioceses).

The desire and fruit of this publication is to bring you hope that young people and the Church are being spiritually awakened and filled with zeal for evangelization. Great expectations is a tenet of CCO’s, which expresses hope and confidence in what God will do through us, with us, and in us.

N EW NEW PENTECOST This year has been an upper room experience. Just like the apostles, we have been locked up and hidden in our homes out of fear and caution. In this moment of great need and vulnerability, God has poured out His Holy Spirit to guide and ignite a fire in us to carry on in ministry. We have experienced a new Pentecost, an anointing of the Holy Spirit over our ministry efforts. In 1 Corinthians 12:3, St Paul says, “no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit.” How much more true during a pandemic? The Holy Spirit worked through computer screens, over wifi signals, and in our homes so that our students could say “Jesus is Lord”. The fruit is undeniable and it is our joy to share it with you.

When we wrote last year’s Great Expectations, it was full of the ways CCO had begun to pivot during the first months of the pandemic. We had no idea the pandemic had more in store for us, and that the Lord had more in store for us! This year of ministry has been the greatest yet: more faith study participants, more Rise Up participants, and a brand new Multiply conference! And these are only a few of the ways God has blessed our movement despite a challenging year. We know that it’s all thanks to the Holy Spirit guiding us along the way. —A N D R É & A N G È L E R EG N I E R Co-Founders of CCO

In 2006, CCO missionaries heard a word from the Lord: “Enlarge the site of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes. For you will spread out to the right and to the left, and your descendants will possess the nations and will settle the desolate towns.” (Isaiah 54:2-3 NRSV)

Brock University was a CCO Connect campus for 3 years before our expansion there. The CCO Connect program provides resources, coaching and support to student leaders on campuses without an official CCO presence who want to evangelize on their campus.

God was inviting us to enlarge the CCO tent and from there the 20-in-20 goal was born— to expand to 20 campuses in 20 years. God has been faithful to this word as CCO has expanded to ten campuses in the following 15 years. It is our privilege to share that this fall, we expanded to Brock University in the Diocese of St. Catharines.

HOLY SPIRIT WE CAN’T QUARAN TINE THE

We needed to get creative for our outreach efforts since we couldn’t meet people organically on campus. We turned to social media and messaged students who followed our Instagram account; that’s how I found Chris, an engineering student who accepted an invitation to take Discovery online. I led him and four others in a group, and Chris came every week, eager to learn about his relationship with God. Things changed for Chris when he heard the parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32) for the first time and learned that God the Father loves us unconditionally. During our faith study follow-up, Chris invited Jesus into the centre of his life and sealed this commitment by going to confession for the first time in 14 years. Chris received God’s profound mercy and experienced great tears of consolation on his drive home. Throughout the semester, I tried my best to build a relationship with Chris and all my participants, but because the internet was glitchy, videos were off, and only one person could speak at a time, it didn’t seem effective. But despite these circumstances I witnessed a conversion! Honestly, it was one of the hardest faith studies I’ve ever led and seeing God work through me really increased my faith. If God can work through Zoom, He can work through anything. I was reminded that the Holy Spirit is the one driving conversion, I am just His hands and feet. As a missionary, I was inspired! —TREVOR ANZAI Interim Campus Team Leader, University of Ottawa

I’ve always been a faithful Catholic, but my faith was always something personal and not shared. Taking Discovery helped me to realize that I’m not living my faith fully if I’m not sharing Jesus with others!

Faith was a big part of my family life back home, but it was lost for a while when I entered university. Meeting CCO helped me reconnect with my faith; I heard it explained in a completely new way that makes my faith come alive!

We talked about how it wasn’t difficult to invite Christ to be at the centre of our lives: we just had to choose Him. I made the simple decision to invite Him in, and now Jesus isn’t distant, like the Queen of England; He is a close friend.

In lesson two, I identified with the Prodigal Son so much; I’ve been so lost and far from God. I was so moved by God’s unconditional love for me that I knew it was time to come home to the Father. E M M A W R I G HT, Memorial University of Newfoundland

IS LORD” I always felt that there was something missing in my relationship with Jesus. But then I invited Him into the centre of my life in lesson five! Now, Jesus is more present to me and I’ve realized that even if I feel distant from Him, Jesus is always reaching out to have a stronger relationship with me. In the first lesson of Discovery, it really resonated with me that there’s nothing that can make Jesus stop loving me. During a Eucharistic Adoration event on campus, when everyone was kneeling in prayer and worship, I felt at peace and that Jesus was telling me, “See? Nothing can separate me from you.” On that day I decided that I needed to invite Jesus into the centre of my life. C HI D E RA U ZOKA, Mount Royal University

Seeing lives change in front of your own face and meeting amazing people along the journey just changed the game for me. It changed my lens—to take mission more personally, and to know that it’s not just for some people—it’s for everyone. Dominik Ostrowski

It’s been very fulfilling for me because the Lord called me to go deeper into relationship with Him, and to call others into that too; to help them encounter Him in ways they could not imagine. Before the mission I felt as if my cup was filled by God but I didn’t know how to give of myself to others. During the mission I saw how I could give of myself through evangelizing! Now I feel more inspired to form relationships at my parish and to use the tools from the mission to evangelize there! Caroline Protasevych

Mission gave me the courage to reach out to a friend and invite her to welcome Jesus into the centre of her life—and she did! It was a very profound moment that the Lord allowed me to be a part of and it helped me to see that being a missionary is the greatest identity we can have. Suzette Doiron

Mission True North equipped me for spiritual conversations and to accompany others in a more effective way—by listening to and relying on the Holy Spirit! Through intentionally yielding to the Holy Spirit, I learned to hear His voice and felt His presence throughout the mission. Bryanna Jackson

Mission gave me the confidence to carry out my missionary identity outside of the university campus. Being with other people on fire for the Lord set me up with the perfect environment to step out of my comfort zone and rely on the Holy Spirit to share the Gospel with the world. Even though I wasn’t the ‘perfect’ faith study leader, the Lord poured out His blessings. All of my participants invited Jesus to be at the centre of their lives and two went through RCIA and were baptized this Easter! I am so grateful that going on a mission helped me grow in my faith over the summer instead of staying stagnant. I know from my own experience as a CCO student that vulnerability naturally happens in a faith study and it brings people closer together. The faith studies also help people to see that they’re called to a relationship with Christ. Since starting Discovery in the parish last February I’ve seen the parish community flourish. Now we are seeing conversions and re-conversions, a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Sacraments, and lingering parishioners after Mass getting to know one another. Melissa Siu-Chong St Michael’s Cathedral Basilica Lay Pastoral Associate Student alumna, Ryerson University

As a student, CCO helped me to grow in my confidence and identity as a missionary disciple. Now that I’m working in ministry, CCO Parish coaching has helped me to see the bigger picture and to grow into my full potential as an accompanier in my parish. The goal is to build multiplying missionary disciples and you can see the fruit of this multiplication inside the parish community and beyond; we’ve helped other parishes start their own faith studies, too!

B EYOND CAMPU S MINIST RY Our involvement with CCO is clearly and manifestly the work of the Holy Spirit, and utterly providential. CCO has directly supported our diocese’s vision and strategy through the faith study materials. We are using Discovery as a tool to inspire our leaders and volunteers deeper into the call to mission, and the adjoining call to greater holiness. We are slowly building a shared language and key values as we explore the purpose and direction of our own ministry. We’re building a culture in ministry that is about more than just feeding ourselves; it’s about feeding the people we’re called to feed. “ TO TH E H E IGH TS O F M ISS IO N ” Rise Up is our annual young adult conference, but really, it’s more than a conference; it exists to motivate and inspire leaders for the renewal of the world. This year we took our biggest yearly gathering online.

Rise Up 2020’s theme was borrowed from Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. “Verso l’alto” was a call “to the heights” of holiness and mission during a particularly challenging year. Bl. Pier Giorgio was constantly striving to reach heaven—and to bring as many people with him as he could. Over the twoday conference, students discovered what it means to set our sights on Christ and to embrace His unfathomable love and plan for our lives. Students were equipped through 25+ online workshops. We wrapped up the conference by commissioning them to go out and share with others. Nothing could be more risky, needed or rewarding.

The missionaries and student leaders continued our mission, taking most of our ministry online— reaching across Canada and around the world. Our CCO Board of Directors thanks you, our supporters, for doing your part for the Gospel mandate. We know that the Lord is faithful. So too were you, our supporters—even through the difficult challenges of the pandemic. Contrary to reasonable expectations, our overall student involvement increased, and we slightly exceeded our fundraising goals. Thank you for your prayers and support. In the year ahead, we will return with renewed zeal to our tried and true methods, while incorporating the good innovations we learned this past year. Our mission is still one person at a time—even if we had to do it one Zoom call at a time this past year!
