CENTRAL COAST STUN SANFRECCCE A classy brace by former Socceroo Mile Sterjovski helped Central Coast Mariners secure one of the Club’s greatest ever triumphs in Gosford on Tuesday. Up against the reigning – and indeed back-to-back – J.League Champions, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Phil Moss’s side fought tooth and nail to come from a goal down to earn a famous win over their highly regarded opponents from the land of the rising sun. The win also gave the Mariners’ hopes of advancing to the knockout phase of Asia’s premier club competition a significant boost, with results in the Club’s home fixtures crucial to the team’s aspirations to emerge from what appears to be a tightly contested Group F. After falling behind to a 21st minute Tsukasa Shiotani goal, the Mariners roared back into the game through Sterjovski’s first strike in the 23rd

minute. South Korean attacker Kim Seung-yong broke swiftly before finding the former LOSC Lille and FC Basel man with an incisive pass. Sterjovski raced onto the pass before sending his strike beyond Takuto Hayashi to make the score 1-1. If Sterjovski’s first goal oozed experience, his second underlined why he has enjoyed one of the longest and most distinguished careers in modern Australian football. Having intercepted possession following an errant pass out from the Sanfrecce defence, Sterjovski cut inside his marker before sending a stunning drive into the back of the net from distance. Mariners boss Phil Moss hailed the win over the J.League giants after the game. “Obviously it’s a very proud moment for the Club and a very famous victory for the Central Coast Mariners and for the A-League, so I am very, very proud of my players,” Moss said. “I hope the main thing to come out of this is belief. If the boys can go into Saturday’s derby with the belief that they went into tonight’s game with, then anything is possible in the back end of the season.” After tonight’s match against Newcastle the team will head directly to Sydney before flying to China tomorrow. On Wednesday, the boys will play Beijing Guoan on 2014 AFC Champions League Matchday 3. SANFRECCE SNAPS

German Gerrit Stoenner is currently interning with the Central Coast Mariners. A former employee at 3. Bundesliga outfit SC Preußen Münster, Stoenner’s knowledge of Deutsch football is strong. However as he learns more about the Hyundai A-League, we’re giving one fan a week the opportunity to tip the round against Gerrit!

On the pitch & in the stands, there was plenty of action at Central Coast Stadium on Tuesday when the Mariners rolled the reigning J.League Champions, Sanfrecce Hiroshima! Here’s a selection of images from what was a historic night for the Club!

To add some European flavour to “Challenge Gerrit”, The Austrian Schnitzelhaus – Erina have jumped on board to sponsor The Loose Cannon feature. If our fan beats Gerrit, he or she will secure a $75 meal voucher to The Austrian Schnitzelhaus – Erina, and if he or she draws with Gerrit, a $25 voucher will be heading their way! Best yet, all Mariners Members and fans can benefit from The Austrian Schnitzelhaus – Erina’s support of The Loose Cannon. Despite having to wear a head guard in Tuesday’s game, e it was Josh Rose and the Mariners who gave Sanfrecc the headaches!

At half time in Tuesday’s match, Marcos Flores venture d to the east to say ‘G’day’ to the Mariners Academy U15 Girls side and their coach Carlos Camacho.

A nice & noisy contingent of Sanfrecce Hiroshima fans ventured to Gosford for the game. Here are a few. We hope they enjoyed their visit despite the result.

ADVERTISEMENTS

How good is that? “PROST!” says Gerrit.

Favourite Mariners Memory: The 2013 Grand Final against the Wanderers! It was an amazing atmosphere with so many people, and even better because the Mariners won! Rhys says: “I love the Mariners because I love football and they are our local team. They have a good place to develop players and they are a top team in the A-League!”

I think it went well for me in particular to learn a lot as a Head Coach. It was great to have a young group and to show them the way that I wanted them to play, and take them into a professional environment. We chose a lot of local kids to show the local community that we look locally and to show that we don’t just get players from Sydney and abroad. We tried to develop all the players. This year we didn’t win it, but that wasn’t our goal. We wanted to improve players, to develop players, so that they are good enough to be potential A-League players. Which players from your squad stood out for you this campaign?

ADVERTISEMENTS

I had 15 players contracted and out of those 15 I think everyone developed to a certain level, everyone progressed in a good way. I think Jesse Curran had a good season, he developed well. Josh Bingham adapted well to the level and you can see that he’s ready for a professional environment. Also youngsters like Daniel McFarlane … he showed that he’s ready to step it up next year and hopefully in a few years he will be good enough to play for the Central Coast Mariners. What is the process for you as Youth Team Head Coach in terms of recruiting your squad for next season? It’s all about networking, scouting, going to visit the state league games, talking to a lot of coaches to try and find new players. Some players will be retained, but we have to find a lot of new young players. Everybody this year had a chance, and hopefully they gave me 100 per cent in their abilities. We’re trying to find new talent, upcoming talent, and will try to develop them into A-League players. That’s my job. You’re also doing some work with Fox Sports. How have you found being part of ‘Kick-Off’ alongside Tara Rushton and Andy Harper? It’s going well. It’s great because I can talk a lot about the Mariners - I can talk a lot about the positives that the Mariners are doing and I can probably put the Mariners on the television in a good spotlight. I like the work there, and it’s an experience as well because it’s live you can’t do much wrong. I like to talk about football, I like to represent the Mariners, and be that guy on national television to talk about the Club. It’s a great platform for us because amongst other things we talk a lot about the Mariners. And it’s great to get to know people like Tara Rushton and Andy Harper because they’ve got the same interests and the same ideas as me.
