Junior High soccer creating excitement For its second season in existence, the Chester County Junior High boys’ soccer team is excited about the upcoming season, and so is new head coach, Tommie Kirk. Kirk, a former high school player at Craigmont High School in Memphis, is assisted by Hunter Callis. Kirk has a true star returning this season in All-Star Brennan Conoway. Although only in the eighth grade, Conoway has international experience having played last summer in Europe. However, the junior Eagles have both ends of the spectrum. For many players on the team this season is their first exposure to the game. The first contest was last week at Selmer. First home match is March 29 with St. Mary’s of Jackson.

Soccer shoots for first winning season It seems the bar is getting higher each season for the Chester County High School boys’ soccer team. Last season the Eagles were 6-9-3 overall, 3-3-1 in district play, and with six returning starters in 2010, that mark is quite reachable again. “We’re more athletic, more fundamentally sound, and we have more experience,” said head coach Jason Judd. “We’re just going to pick up where we ended last season.” All-district performer Brandon Rodriguez headlines the team, and Parker Griffin, Will Taylor, and Michael Dawson add punch to the lineup. CCHS got off to a good start with two victories March 6 at a preseason jamboree in Lexington. They opened the regular season March 16 at Brownsville, and play Thursday through Friday of this week in the Lions’ Cup at FreedHardeman University.

Top line is solid for CCHS tennis Returning players in the one to five positions give the Chester County High School boys’ tennis team a solid nucleus for the upcoming season. The Eaglettes have their top two players returning, but have a wide-open race for the next three spots. No. 1 Mallory Hudson and No. 2 Anna

Young form the nucleus of the girls’ squad. For the guys, Justin Daniel, Austin Daniel, Miles Sheppard, Peyton Stewart, and Patrick Haltom will have the Eagles competing for the district championship. A new district alignment may also be an advantage this season, and veteran

Four returning seniors, plus a returning pitcher, give optimism for a great 2010 season for the Chester County High School softball team. Seniors Katie Hall, Caycee Jones, Nicole Sheffield, and Meagham Williams have been through the wars, and Hall played a key role in the Eaglettes march to the state tournament two years earlier. The return of Kamara Trice to the mound will be a huge boost for the team after

missing most of 2009 with an injury. Also, leadoff hitter Jessica Weeks is a great asset at the top of the order, plus Bailey Gately is expected to throw many innings. Head coach Brandon Pipkin will ask several young players to contribute, and looks to be competitive with every district opponent. “Our strength should be pitching, with potential at the plate,” Pipkin said.

Lions picked fourth in TranSouth Conference The 2010 TranSouth Conference Preseason Baseball Poll has the Freed-Hardeman Lions picked fourth in the eight-team league. The poll, as voted by the coaches, tabs Cumberland University as the favorite to win the league. Cumberland received five first place votes, with Union University coming in second with three first place votes. The NAIA also released its preseason rankings with four TranSouth teams listed among the nation’s best. Cumberland is No. 19, while Union, Trevecca Nazarene University and Freed-Hardeman University are all receiving votes in the national rankings. In 2009, Cumberland won the TranSouth regular season title, while Union claimed the tournament championship. Both Union and Cumberland advanced to the NAIA National Tournament opening round with both teams posting 1-2 records.

Union University is in the No. 2 spot in the preseason poll, followed by Bethel

University at No. 3 and Freed-Hardeman University rounding out the top four. Trevecca Nazarene University was chosen No. 5, Lyon College No. 6, Cumberland was picked No. 7 and MidContinent is in the No. 8 position. These eight teams will be fighting for the 2010 TranSouth Athletic Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championships. Big shoes to fill for Lady Lion softball program After going 96-41 in the last three seasons, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions find themselves with some big shoes to fill after the graduation of five seniors from last season’s 26-9 squad. Among those graduates are Tarrah Tucker and Brittany Bradford, both of whom were key parts of the program’s success in those three years. PITCHERS In the circle, the Lady Lions must deal with the graduation of Tucker, who finished her career holding every pitching record in school history. However, the team will not be at a shortage of experience with the return of senior Britney Caldwell, who has been the team’s No. 2

starter the last three seasons behind Tucker. Last season, Caldwell went 7-6 with a 1.98 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 102 innings of work. Freshmen twin sisters Savannah and Summer Cole will work together behind Caldwell in the rotation. CATCHERS After splitting time behind the plate with Bradford for the last three seasons, senior Traci Gibbons moves to the position on a full-time basis. Gibbons threw out 40 percent of base stealers last year. She also hit .296 with 23 RBI despite spending most of her time in the ninth spot in the order and is a particularly dangerous hitter with runners in scoring position. Freshman Amber VanSandt

could also see time in the battery. INFIELDERS When not in the circle, Caldwell will likely be at first base, a position where she has split time for the last two seasons. This season she’ll share the position with sophomore Brittany Yates, and the two will form the anchor of the Lady Lion lineup. Caldwell hit .279 with five homeruns and 29 RBI last year while Yates batted .303 with five homeruns and a team-leading 31 RBI. Also back is Jill Brock, who will be a three-year starter at shortstop. The junior hit .274 in 2009 and led the team in sacrifices. Augusta McClary, who started every game at second base last year, will likely

move to third base to make room for the return of Betsy Pickler. Pickler missed the 2009 season with an injury after hitting .317 with 17 RBI as a sophomore in 2008. OUTFIELDERS Brittany Steverson is the lone returning starter in the FHU outfield and will move from left field to center field this season. Steverson hit .322 last year after hitting .337 as a freshman. Juniors Natalie Carson and Audra Yopp have each seen limited action in their first two seasons and their roles could be expanded this year. Newcomers Caneshia Turner and Brandi Edwards are also options for playing time.
