MY CARDIFF CITY FC FOUNDATION LIFE I truly believe that if I didn’t attend this course then I wouldn’t have had the opportunity of completing my further education in the USA. I wouldn’t have gained the qualifications required and it has also given me a great start for my future, not only through education, but also through my football/futsal experience. Lee Price Former BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport Student

I believe that both the course and my experiences will assist me to achieve both my career goals in education and football. I have continuously worked hard throughout the two years and I will be leaving this summer having achieved high grades.

Tayla Gould Former BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport Student

CASE STUDIES From a young age, I always had a passion for football. At the age of 8, I had my first contact with Cardiff City FC through their soccer schools. The only experience I had in football was playing with my cousins in the garden, without ever being in a coached environment. Although there weren’t many girls attending the soccer school, the experience I had at the soccer school was life changing. It stimulated my hunger to want to become a footballer. Following the soccer school, I was invited to train with the girls at the development centre, which fed to the women’s first team. I was fortunate enough to have a coach who I worked well with and further developed my hunger to be a better player. I continued to develop and played for the development centre for 8 years. Although the competitive structure wasn’t established due to the primitive stage of women’s football, Cardiff City still gave me the facilities and opportunities to continue developing as a player. My main focus as a 16 year old was football, and only football. I had been recently been invited to attend an international camp, which changed my mentality to want to train and play as a professional. An opportunity arose with Cardiff City FC Foundation to join a new course, which combined my love for football with my studies. Following my GCSEs I joined a two-year futsal scholarship, where I trained for half of the academic day and continued my studies focusing on sport for the other half. Within those two years I developed as a player more than ever, and represented Wales under 19’s as a 17 year old. Academically I also excelled in a specific field that I was passionate about.

Once the first year of the futsal course finished, our attention turned to university. I always dreamt of playing football in America at collegiate level. The staff at Cardiff City FC Foundation helped and supported me through the application process and provided a link between myself the and American universities, which still continues. I had a great first few months in America, however the UEFA European Championship Final Tournament was always at the back of my mind, so I returned home, as I wanted to focus on becoming an international player. Following the tournament, I caught up with the Assistant Education Manager, of which I remained in contact with whilst in America. She informed me that Cardiff City FC Foundation were expanding their education department and were launching a Foundation degree. The degree includes UEFA C and UEFA B licence and developing football within the community, which was an ideal course for me to pursue career goals. Whilst on the course, I was given part time work within different

sectors of the community including; social inclusion, primary education, Women’s and girls and soccer schools. 12 years on from my initial contact with Cardiff City, I am now a fully qualified B licence coach, working full time at Cardiff City FC Foundation as a multi sports coach in Primary Schools, whilst completing my degree.
