passività, dall’individualismo e dalla solitudine. Dopo i Sinodi dei Vescovi del 2014 e 2015, e dopo l’esortazione apostolica Amoris Laetitia risulta chiara l’importanza delle comunità cattoliche, soprattutto di quelle composte da famiglie, nell’accoglienza e nell’accompagnamento dei giovani che devono prendere le grandi decisioni della loro vita e superare le difficoltà. Ci vogliono sforzi speciali perché i giovani di diverse appartenenza sociale possano trovare il loro posto in queste comunità. L’attuale fenomeno migratorio continua a costituire una grande sfida per i cattolici europei. Quello che è comune e condiviso ovunque è l’impegno cristiano nelle opere di carità per aiutare i più bisognosi. È importante che i vescovi e i cattolici dei diversi paesi possano scambiare le loro esperienze anche in questo campo nello spirito del mutuo rispetto, atteggiamento profondamente cristiano, che ascolta l’altro prima di giudicare e che vuole imparare dall’altro più che insegnargli. Risulta molto istruttivo vedere come in base allo stesso impegno nella fede i cattolici dei Paesi del centro e delle diverse periferie europee trovano le vie più appropriate della misericordia e della carità cristiana. La nostra forza, infatti, proviene dalla persona di Cristo, dal Suo insegnamento e dalla Sua grazia. È Lui che ci mostra le risposte giuste di fronte alle sfide speciali e communi. Ed è proprio Gesù Cristo che sentivamo molto vicino durante la nostra ultima assemblea plenaria celebrata in Terra Santa. Tale visita ci ha dato l’occasione di esprimere la nostra vicinanza ai cristiani del Medio Oriente e anche al Popolo Eletto con il quale siamo inseparabilmente collegati proprio attraverso la persona di Gesù Cristo, nostro Maestro e nostro Signore. Chiediamo il Suo sostegno e la Sua benedizione per la collaborazione fraterna dei vescovi, di tutti i cristiani e dell’intera popolazione dell’Europa.

After the 2014 and 2015 Synods of Bishops, and after the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia the importance of Catholic communities, especially those comprising families, in welcoming and accompanying the young people who must make major decisions about their lives and overcome difficulties, seems clear. Special efforts are necessary to bring the young people of different social class to find their place in these communities. The current phenomenon of migration continues to be a major challenge for European Catholics. What is common and shared everywhere is the Christian commitment in works of charity to help those most in need. It is important that the bishops and Catholics of the different countries can exhcnage their experiences in this area, too, in the spirit of mutal respect, a profoundly Christian attitude, which listens to the other person before judging and wants to learn from the other rather than teach them. It is very instructive to see how on the basis of the same commitment in faith the Catholics of the countries of the centre and of the different European margins find the most appropriate ways of mercy and Christian charity. Our strength, in fact, comes from the person of Christ, from His teaching and from His grace. It is He who shows us the correct answers in the face of the special and common challenges. And it is precisely Jesus Christ whom we felt very close to us during our last plenary assembly celebrated in the Holy Land. Such a visit gave us the opportunity to express our closeness to the Christians of the Middle East and also to the Chosen People to whom we are inseparably linked precisely through the person of Jesus Christ, our Teacher and our Lord. We ask for His support and His blessing for the fraternal collaboration of the bishops, all Christians and the whole population of Europe.
