The Connecticut Children’s Book Fair benefits the Northeast Children’s Literature Collections of the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center. The Collections comprise of nearly 36,000 children’s books spanning more than 200 years, and a growing archive of original art and creative materials from today’s authors and illustrators. The co-chairs of the Connecticut Children’s Book Fair are Terri Goldich, Curator, Northeast Children’s Literature Collection and Suzy Staubach, Manager, General Books at the UConn Co-op. The Thomas J. Dodd Research Center (located at 405 Babbidge Road) and the UConn Co-op (located at 2075 Hillside Road between Gampel Pavilion and the Connecticut Museum of Natural History) are both on campus and within easy walking distance of the Connecticut Children’s Book Fair. We invite you to come visit. Next year’s Connecticut Children’s Book Fair will be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 10 & 11, 2012. For information call 1-800-U-READIT, 860-486-5027 or log on to http://bookfair.uconn.edu or www.bookstore. uconn.edu.

% # Autographed books make great gifts, are wonderful keepsakes and they are very collectible. All of the Connecticut Children’s Book Fair’s guest authors and illustrators will be available to sign copies of their books. Please pay for your books before getting in line. A bookseller will give you a post-it so that you can write the name of the person you want the book inscribed to, which will make the autographing easier for the author or illustrator. If the autograph lines are particularly long, the author or illustrator may do signature only in order to accommodate everyone. We will also have some presigned books available. Please note that proceeds from the sale of books benefit the Northeast Children’s Literature Collection. All books for autographing must be purchased at the Connecticut Children’s Book Fair.

*#

Have your photo taken. Clifford the Big Red Dog will visit and pose for photos at the beginning of each hour. Other characters will appear throughout the day. They include: Piggie, Elephant, Strega Nona, Miss Bindergarten & Froggy.

PROUD TO SUPPORT CONNECTICUT EDUCATION AND EDUCATORS

Newspaper In Education Sponsorship Information

Help the Chronicle bring Newspapers into the Classrooms What is NIE? Newspaper in Education, NIE, is an international program begun in 1955 to advance the use of newspapers in schools. The main purpose of the program is to improve reading, spelling and writing abilities.

Why? “There is substantial evidence that using newspapers in schools contributes to students’ reading skills, writing skills, and current event knowledge. (Edward F. DeRoche, Dean, School of Education, University of San Diego)

Who is involved? We’re a partnership consisting of sponsors, teachers, students and the Chronicle. Teachers use the newspaper as textbooks and supplements in areas such as reading, writing, math, science, history, economics, language arts, special education, English as a second language and more. The newspaper can be incorporated into nearly any classroom subject and grade level from kindergarten to adult education. Newspapers are considered to be the most up-to-date, inexpensive textbook available to students. The skills gained from regular newspaper exposure make each student a better learner, a better problem-solver, and a better leader. Participating Schools: Andover Elementary, Ashford School, Kidderbrook Montessori, Chaplin Elementary, Parish Hill High, Eastern Regional Academy, Capt. Nathan Hale Middle, Hampton Elementary, RHAM Middle, Annie Vinton Elementary, Southeast School, EastConn Youth Build GED, Natchaug Elementary, Sweeney School, Windham Middle and Windham Tech.

If you are interested in sponsoring, please call the Chronicle at 860-423-8466 ext. 3314 Thank you for working with the Chronicle to bring Newspapers into our local schools.
