Master your diagnostic skills in medical technology Biomedical Equipment Technology plays a vital role in patient care through the inspection, maintenance and repair of medical and monitoring devices. MiraCosta’s BMET program will train students to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronics-based biomedical instruments and equipment. ABOUT MiraCosta’s Biomedical Equipment Technician program includes training courses that expose students to various electronics-based medical devices found in both small clinics and hospitals. After students have completed internships, they will be encouraged to become Certified Biomedical Equipment Technicians (CBET).

Our 15-hour introductory course introduces students to this powerful 3D mechanical design software, allowing students to move from 2D to 3D images. Students will also learn how to transform their CAD drawing to a usable CAM image.

Blueprint Reading with GD&T Learn to read and correctly interpret blueprints used in the manufacturing trades in this hands-on class.

Students are given the opportunity to draw and edit simple blueprints through step-by-step development of multiview drawings. In addition, students will learn the basics of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). This course is the perfect introduction to GD&T, symbols, applications and methods of inspection.

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Operation Computer numerical control (CNC) is the automated control of manufacturing machining tools (drills, boring tools, lathes) by means of a computer. In this 56 hour course, students will learn safety, terminology, and basic blueprint reading as well as interpretation of G&M codes, and operation of both a HAAS CNC mill and lathe. Students will also get exposure to CAD/CAM software. Course material and activities are provided via demonstrations and hands-on instruction.

Digital Precision Measuring Using a Portable CMM An introduction to metrology using a portable Coordinate-measuring machine (CMM) and Verisurf CAD software. Students will learn the basics of inspection, measurement, analysis and reverse engineering. This course is for individuals working within the advanced manufacturing environment.

Introduction to CNC Programming Using MasterCam Mill In this 30-hour introductory course, students learn how to design basic CNC programs for a three-axis CNC milling machine. Students will be instructed on G&M codes, Boolean logic and machine and control definitions. In addition, the class will cover basic aspects of post configuration, variable definitions, formatting, post lines, post text, modality and control definitions.

Intermediate CNC Programming Using MasterCam Mill MasterCam is the most widely used CAM software in the industry and this intermediate 30-hour course will provide students with trade-specific tips and tricks, whether they are in production or programming. This course also teaches additional topics for more intricate programs and designs. HAAS simulators will be used to test run the programs.

COMPUTER NUMERIC CONTROLLED (CNC) equipment is precision machinery that cuts, grinds, or drills into the material. The CNC Operator and Programming Certificates from MiraCosta College provide students with the skills they need to enter this growing field.

We encourage you to purchase a 4 GB thumb drive to back-up your data and projects. We will also have a reference library of books that can be utilized during class time. All other class materials and supplies will be provided including use of computers during class time.

CNC OPERATORS work with heavy machinery from setup to operation to produce parts and tools from metal, plastic, or other materials. They may work on many different machines, or specialize on one complex machine. They are builders, fabricators, mechanics, craftsmen, and quality assurance all wrapped into one.

FORMAT The class will involve a mix of lecture and individual projects. Considerable time will be spent working hands-on in the machinist and CNC labs. Some of the instructional documents will be accessible online.

A CNC PROGRAMMER programs the machines that cut, shape, and finish materials. The CNC programmer must study the drawings and blueprints of the components that need to be manufactured and determine which machines will be required, what they will need to do, and the order in which the work needs to be done.

UNMANNED SYSTEMS (ROV/DRONE) OPERATOR TECHNICIAN ABOUT MiraCosta’s Unmanned Systems (ROV/Drone) Operator Technician program is a rigorous, hands-on training course that prepares students to enter the workforce as entry level operators and technicians in either the ROV or Drone industry. Learn the necessary training to become an electronic assembler at an advanced manufacturing company:

Electromechanical technicians combine knowledge of mechanical technology with knowledge of electrical and electronic circuits.

They install, troubleshoot, repair and upgrade electronic and computercontrolled mechanical systems. In this 60-hour course, students will learn about mechanical systems: solder small electrical boards build, program and operate a 3D printer, troubleshoot a copier and more.

Basic Electronics An introductory, 50-hour course that teaches students the basics of electronic technology. Students experiment with direct current, seriesparallel circuits and transistors/ semiconductors. ABOUT MiraCosta Engineering Technician Program is designed to prepare students with skills and knowledge to work as a technician in manufacturing and technology industries.

Coursework is geared for application in industry with additional emphasis to prepare students for further education in the fields of engineering. The program is multidisciplinary and integrates electronics, software, computers, mechanics, engineering testing, technical writing, computer control (PLCs), hydraulics, pneumatics, optics, troubleshooting, robotics and automation.

Instruction includes projects that involve automation, robotics, and maritime components. The course also includes training in applied communications, and employability skills including leadership, human relations, and safe, efficient work practices. Lean and OSHA 10 training is also provided.

ABOUT The availability of skilled workers in the machinist trade is a national crisis. To be competitive in the global economy, the United States of America must train workers for the ever-changing world. Machinist Technology at MiraCosta College is immersed in the basics of the machine technology trade. Students continue to learn about manufacturing processes through the use of common manual machining tools. Students will learn about machining and manufacturing through a project-based curriculum. These skills include: the ability to work safely and thoughtfully on a variety of machine tools and to create functional products from various materials. There is an emphasis on planning, organizing and utilizing the available equipment to create the products in the defined curriculum. PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN PROGRAM WITH NCCT EXAM

Are you drawn to a career in medicine?

MiraCosta College Community Education & Workforce Development, in partnership with PhlebotomyU, is proud to offer this excellent opportunity for those seeking to enter the medical field as a CPT1 phlebotomy technician.

Students are required to complete: • A minimum of 20-hours in basic phlebotomy • A minimum of 20-hours in advanced phlebotomy • A minimum 40-hour laboratory course in applied phlebotomy Students who pass the course will also be eligible to take a certification examination offered by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), offered in class at the conclusion of the course. Upon successful completion of the course and externship, participants will be issued a state-approved training certificate.

Externship: 40–120 hours of a clinical externship will be provided and supervised by our phlebotomy program staff.

SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC ASSOCIATE TRAINING Certificated training to enhance your skills San Diego County is #2 in the nation for solar installations!

This course helps students pass the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) Photovoltaic Associate credential. NABCEP is a nationally recognized certifying agency for solar installers. This course is split into two parts: the first is the theory and practical hands-on experience; the second is preparation for the exam. The class will jointly build a demo solar system using common PV components and electrical parts and tools. The class will integrate theory, code and regulations with practical applications.

VETERINARY ASSISTANT PROGRAM Put your love of animals to work.

Become a veterinary assistant in just a few months! This 60-hour program will provide an overview and entry level training for the veterinary assistant profession. Learn basic animal care principles and techniques, safety procedures and state/federal guidelines.

Topics include: • Basic anatomy and physiology • Basic radiology • Small animal breeds • Animal nutrition • Parasite control • Record keeping and veterinary office procedures • Client relations and communications Veterinary medical terminology, hospital patient care and reception skills will also be covered. Students will learn lab skills and surgical assisting appropriate to the veterinary assistant level. This class is entry level and specifically NOT veterinary technician training, which requires a two year degree program.

Externship: We strongly recommended a minimum of 80 externship hours at the conclusion of the training (this is required for anyone receiving funding from an outside organization).

Welding and Metal Fabrication

This course is designed to train students to qualify to an American Welding Society (AWS) code. The course will explore basic welding processes and procedures, safety, interpretations of blueprints/shop drawings, metallurgy, different fabrication tools, different welding qualifications and procedure qualification. In addition, students will receive a significant amount of hands-on training in:

Interested in expanding upon your newly acquired skills from our Welding I class by getting some hands-on experience? If so, this 60-hour class is a great opportunity to practice and expand upon existing skills. Topics will include class projects, covering: • SMAW, GMAW & FCAW welding processes • Plasma arc cutting • Blueprint Reading • Basic tool safety and “tools of the trade” suggested checklist for welders/fabricators.

• Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW ) • Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW ) • Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW ) GI Bill®, WIOA and Sallie Mae funding approved Time: Tuesday–Thursday or 19 Saturdays or 19 Sundays, 132 hours of instruction

• Hands-on experience with the ironworker, cold saw and band saw Students will also learn math fabrication skills, job steps from start to finish, tacking, squaring and order of welding and basic critical thinking.

Time: 15 Mondays, 60 hours of instruction

T here are more than 80 welding processes. Most involve a skilled worker using a high-heat torch (2,800-plus degrees Fahrenheit), filler material that is usually in wire or stick form (though some welds don’t use fillers) and pressure to permanently bond metal pieces. Welding can also be used to cut and dismantle objects of all sizes as well as for repairs.
