Central Coast Art Association AUGUST, 2012

CCAA CALENDAR OUR MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC (Bring your friends) Next meeting: Monday, August 27, 2012 General meeting is 7:00 P.M. to 9 P.M. (Board meeting is at 6:00 P.M) The Monterey Youth Center - 646-3873 777 Pearl St., Monterey (Dennis the Menace Park)

PROGRAM FOR AUGUST Our demo artist will be local artist John “Mac” McWilliams. Artist’s Statement: My attitude towards, or philosophy of art, cannot be summedup in a phrase or two. Indeed, painting for me takes place fundamentally in the pre-vocal, preconceptualized state. It is the brushstroke and the composition that interests me nowadays, and the serendipitously or intentionally admixture of juxtaposed colors. Trying to affect a mood or make a statement with my art has never been a main goal; the imagery is almost secondary, the application and process primary. John “Mac’ McWilliams will demonstrate his pastel portrait techniques at our meeting with a model. NEW CCAA PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT According to the CCAA by-laws our president and vice president change every two years. Three members of the board were chosen to go through a selection process to find a new president and vice president for CCAA. We are very fortunate to have Leela Marcum as our new president and Cheryl Kampe as our new vice president. Thank you to Shirley Moffett, our outgoing president, who has been a dedicated member since 1990 and our president for the past two years.

JUNE MEETING Our demo artist was Cyndra Bradford. She gave us a wonderful step by step painting demo. Establishing a set color palette before painting is a novel concept to some artists who are used to mixing as they go, but one that all students find useful. “I think it’s very helpful to mix big piles of paint beforehand. It doesn’t hinder your process once the creativity starts flowing.” “You can’t be timid with a palette knife.” “I am very deliberate with the movement and the color choice. When painting the cliffs, I choose colors other than the obvious shades of brown to add depth and dimension because there are certainly other colors in the cliffs. For instance, I see the blue of the ocean reflected in the cliffs’ shadows, so I paint those in with my palette knife.” The painting above is her ‘almost finished’ demo painting.

Congratulations to the MBPAPA Exhibit winner from CCAA, Sungwoo Kim. She won Juror's Choice for her painting - "El Camino Real" and (one month solo exhibition in Garden Gallery in 2013 at Galeria Tonantzin).
