Mazal Tov! ADULT B’NAI MITZVAH CLASS OF 2017

Pictured (l-r): front row: Julia Mazow, Elise Newman, Lynn Bliss and Tammy Hallman; back row: Grayson Bush, Ronna Selber, Mandy Selber and Barbara Garvin.

Saturday morning, April 8, at Congregation Beth Yeshurun, eight dedicated adults will celebrate becoming Adult B’nai Mitzvah. They will conduct the Shabbat morning service, lead the prayers, chant the Torah and Haftarah, and offer their own personal reflections. We hope you will join us for this wonderful simchah! To prepare for this day, they have participated in our newly revised Adult B’nai Mitzvah curriculum that included a survey of important Jewish texts of the Bible and Rabbinic literature with Rabbis Morgen and Strauss; and learning Hebrew, Shabbat prayers, and

the cantillation of their Torah and Haftarah portions with Cantor Diane Dorf. Normally, Jews celebrate their B’nai Mitzvah at age 13, but when circumstances do not allow for this celebration at a young age, a Jew may do it as an adult. The eight students are: Lynn Bliss, Grayson Bush, Barbara Garvin, Tammy Hallman, Julia Mazow, Elise Newman, Mandy Selber and Ronna Selber. If you are interested in participating in future classes, please contact Rabbi Morgen by phone at 713.666.1881 or send him an email at smorgen@ bethyeshurun.org.

More Passover Information . . . Check out www.bethyeshurun.org, click on Passover Guide 2017 on the home page, then follow the links to: • Getting ready for the holiday • What’s kosher, what’s not, for Passover • Preparing your kitchen for Passover • Passover services The Torah prohibits the ownership of hametz during Pesah. Ridding oneself of hametz is a three-step process: Mechirat Hametz (selling of hametz) can be arranged anytime up until 10:00am, Monday, April 10. The hametz is sold via the Rabbi to a non-Jew in a valid and legal transfer of ownership. At the end of the holiday, the Rabbi arranges for the reversion of ownership. Any hametz that is “sold” must be stored out of sight (and of course, not used), since it technically now “belongs” to the person who bought it. Mechirat Hametz can be arranged through the Greenfield Chapel, by calling Rabbi Rosen’s office (713.666.1881), by mailing in the following coupon, or online at www.bethyeshurun.org.

One “last chametz” breakfast! Monday, April 10, is the first night of Passover. Just about every Jew goes to a Seder that night. But there is another ritual on that day to which all of you are invited. On the morning before Passover, following the regular daily service, we hold a special ceremony in the Greenfield Rabbi Horwitz Chapel. We complete the study of a tractate of Talmud. This year, the siyyum will be on Masekhet Chagigah. Why do we do this now? Traditionally, the firstborn males fasted on the day before Passover, as an acknowledgment of their being spared in the plague of the firstborn in Egypt which occurred that day. Since it is a minor fast which only applies to a small subset of the Jewish people, participating in this joyous “siyyum” (completion ceremony) exempts the firstborn from the especially difficult fast before the Seder. The J.B. Greenfield Chapel is there for happy occasions (the occasional babynaming, aufruf, and special birthday and anniversary celebrations) and for sad times, when our members come to recite Kaddish and remember loved ones. But it is also there for regular occasions, for all the days which fall on our Jewish calendar. Even if you are not a firstborn male, you are welcome to join us for the siyyum and the breakfast afterwards. Special thanks to Paul Katz and our Beth Yeshurun Brotherhood for sponsoring this special “last chametz” breakfast! Chag Sameiach, Rabbi Daniel Horwitz

What’s Happening in the William S. Malev Schools for Religious Studies

Kehillah High 10th grade Shabbaton Kehillah High 10th graders recently spent a wonderful Shabbat together in Galveston. The teens came together to pray, learn, and explore Judaism. The teens loved the beautiful beach front setting, the interactive programs and services, and the opportunity to spend time together outside of class. The Shabbaton was coordinated by Danielle Alexander, Kehillah High Director. We were fortunate to have 16 teens join with clergy and education directors/assistant directors from the three participating synagogues, as well as the community’s Israeli shlichim. Kehillah High is a multi-denominational partnership with Congregation Beth Israel, Congregation Beth Yeshurun, and Congregation Brith Shalom, partly funded by the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston and Houston Jewish Community Foundation. For more information or to sign up for Kehillah High, go to WWW.KEHILLAHHOUSTON.ORG or contact Danielle Alexander, Kehillah High Director, at DALEXANDER@KEHILLAHHOUSTON.ORG or 713.271.7369 ext. 334.

RS uses Legos to build Hebrew words Religious School students have been having fun with Legos during Hebrew studies! Teachers have written Hebrew letters and vowels onto the sides of Legos, which has enabled the students to build words. Typically students work in small groups to build words that are given to them on flashcards. Every student in the group has to be able to read the word and say its meaning before getting credit for the word. Teachers and students have enjoyed playing games and using other manipulatives to reinforce Hebrew reading skills throughout the year.

Fifth grade students Adam Hakimi, Emme Hoover, Miles Newman, and Aaron Newman are shown working on finding Legos to build Hebrew words that are on the flashcards they have been given.
