One of the nine cities of Southern California’s Coachella Valley, Cathedral City straddles Interstate 10 between Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage. With an estimated population of 52,220 (2021), it is a flourishing community, with superb quality of life and burgeoning improvements.

Long inhabited by the Cahuilla Indians, the area was visited by the Spaniards in the 18th century and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the mid-19th century, when Col. Henry Washington observed that the local canyons had a cathedral-like majesty. He called the impressive geography Cathedral Canyon.

For three-quarters of a century, the area remained a quiet and scenic wayside with a few scattered settlements. But in 1925, a foursome of land developers— Glen Plumley, George Allen, Jack Grove and M.V. Van Fleet — subdivided one half of a section of land, drilled a water well and installed a storage tank and delivery line. Their subdivision borrowed the name of the beautiful canyon, optimistically called Cathedral City, and the four developers gave their own names to local streets. A 1927 invitation for a free barbecue and free bus transportation from Palm Springs enticed bidders for the subdivision parcels. Cathedral City was incorporated in 1981, and a downtown revitalization program started in the late 1990s. While it was largely completed by 2005, improvements continue apace. The new Cathedral City Community Amphitheater downtown is expected to enhance the local entertainment district, the Mary Pickford movie theater was renovated and the distinguished Coachella Valley Repertory is located across from the amphitheater.
