Traditionally the town square has symbolized the stability of local government and civic gathering activating and incubating economic growth and community involvement. The modern age of industry and commerce, as well as expanding governing bodies have left many town squares in a state of decay due to their inability to respond to the natural growth of the city. Unable to adapt to growth and provide infrastructural support for economic development, the traditional town square framework has become inadequate to modern-day needs. As a result businesses and jobs, residential amenities, cultural centers and governing entities have relocated resulting in urban discontinuity and community disintegration. With rare exceptions, the civic presence has abandoned the most symbolic node within the city. An architectural intervention has been proposed to rehabilitate the decaying urban centers of underdeveloped cities and their traditional town squares. Respect to cultural and historic preservation policies must be applied within the urban and architectural solution. The cities attempting to revitalize these historic town squares will have to compromise in order to holistically and sustainably reshape the image and functionality of these areas.

The plug-in city will be the vehicle for urban revitalization for town squares by transform03 - PLAZA ing, occupying and EDGE integrating into the perimeter edge and adopting the ideologies of adaptive reuse architecture. The architecture will simultaneously insert mixed-use and public spaces into the existing urban fabric. The perimeter will become a socket for an urban container enhancing the inward and outward edges of the square and the city beyond. The container is the response to the lack of density, infrastructural and programmatic support for the inevitable growth of the city, revitalizing business and living.

The plugged perimeter responds to the preservationists’ efforts to maintain the town square and provide an augmented architecture between old and new urban conditions. The perimeter block acts as a socket for new program and public space, reactivating the urban centers 1125 FT and economies of failing towns. The architecture will be elevated above the perimeter blocks surrounding the town square. The project merges residential and commercial spaces to create and provide opportunity for a new architecture of simultaneity. Responding to modern life, the complex provides the program to reenergize the city’s economy and urban fabric while stimulating new connections and relationships between building types. Embracing the culture of high-end living and retail, the plug-in city attracts visitors from surrounding cities, students and local residents. Providing a solution to preserving the historic buildings, the project will be built on top of existing historic structures, preserving existing typologies. Moments of integration will allow for a holistic solution to a complete urban revitalization.

EXPERIMENTAL ARCHITECTURE The Lunar Fusion Complex (LFC) will be the first fusion power plant and human colony located on the moon’s surface. In response to the growing demand for terrestrial energy by the year 2100 the LFC will provide mankind with sustainable power by embracing technological innovation and automated construction methods for lunar inhabitation.

COMPONENT SYSTEMS

The architecture of the Lunar Fusion Complex will be a necessary and direct response to the extreme conditions present within the moon’s environment. Creative strategies will attempt to solve the infrastructural challenges of space colonization and will embrace new ideas of the simultaneous live-work programs and macro lunar urbanization.

SECTION

The program will consist of three major components including the residence, the nuclear fusion complex and mining facilities. The construction will primarily consist of in-situ 3D printing and will provide the shell and core structures necessary for safe inhabitation and continuing development and construction.

The lunar surface has varying site conditions and the location will be determined based on the parameters set by prior research and exploration. The current location is set to be a network of repeatable structures within the expansive flat-lands of the Sea of Tranquility, location of the Apollo 11 mission. The complex will take advantage of the impact-craters geology that provides the necessary resources for construction, energy production and life-sustaining resources.

SITE ANALYSIS

PROJECT HYPOTHESIS Located at 6th and Bowie Street in the downtown Austin area, the site functions as a key transitional node between different urban densities, characters, and uses. The transition occurs between the east and west, north and south, and the work-play urban environments of downtown Austin. The site is a key mediator between the automobile traffic from 5th and 6th streets, the pedestrian routes connecting the downtown area with the emerging west side, and the bicycle path along Shoal Creek, which provides a potential connection via north and south. The project starts to consider Austin’s culture of congestion, answering the needs of each transportation mode by providing dense integration of interior path and diverse program. The urban car park creates a node of transition between the automobile, bicycle, and pedestrian. Stacking program vertically, the project promotes interaction between the users of the designed parking space, retail, event space, bicycle facilities and green space. The project is essentially an interior avenue of ramps, retail, event, and parking space creating a dynamic urban sponge of accessibility and program. The interior avenue carves space for itself and becomes the defining element for the project’s form, and acts as a metaphor for the influence that automobiles have traditionally had on the pattern of urban development. The mixing of retail and transit creates a strong and distinctive place where the auto, pedestrian and bicycle exist in harmony. It doesn’t draw lines between its elements or between itself and its surroundings. The project is a paradox of satire and reality, embracing the automobile and its dynamic influence on urban design, architecture and habitual spaces.

Engaging the kinetic experiences of the Seaholm industrial district and the emerging high density residential districts, the Knot Project questions the unexplored opportunities in a live-work low-income facility. The project’s design merges two contradictory programs, residential housing and a materials recovery facility (MRF), and integrates them by a complexity of weaving and knotting of experiential and functional space.

SECTIONAL MOVEMENT The building’s form drew inspiration from early sectional analyses via a musical score. By layering different instrumental parts and converting the tones, melodies, and pitches into two-dimensional space, an experiential transect of building components began to emerge. These components are essentially broken down into three elements including the residential program, the industrial program, and the string-like separation structure. This separation structure, which consists of undulating plains, frames and shapes the space that the residential and industrial programs occupy. This separation plane creates a balance of isolation and protection; connection and integration, and a rhythmic layering of space between the two programs and their experiential qualities.

SECTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The function of the industry drives its form internally, and only in certain moments does it show itself to the outside world. The residential program tightly wraps around the industry, and is molded around a continuous experiential transect, creating a continuous trajectory of outdoor and indoor space. This trajectory offers panoramic views of downtown Austin, and becomes an extension of the Shoal Creek walking and cycling trail. Stimulating the senses, the building leaves one with a sense of experiential confusion by the knotting of the two opposing programs. One can walk down the experiential void, with the crunch of gravel beneath ones feet, the textured concrete formwork on either side, the filtering of light from above, and complete isolation from the congested city with the faint sound of shattering glass being made ready for processing.

The Inuit Art and Learning Center will serve as an addition to the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The core idea of the addition sought the transformative qualities in its architecture through the study of the WAG’s modernist expressions and the dualities seen in Inuit culture, particularly the transformative relationship between the animal and human.

The development of two cores, more like atriums, became the anchors within the charged site. Acting as pivots for horizontal organization and vertical circulation, the cores became the datum of reference and a spiritual connection to the sky. The cores fostered the dualistic quality of compression and decompression between program and atrium.

An intense study of object-field relationships resulted in the modernist arrangement of form and program. The expression of the metamorphosis between the human and animal as seen in Inuit culture resulted in the metamorphosis of mass and volume. The duality created between the orthogonal static mass facing south and the plastic-dynamic mass facing north is the resulting dialogue of that Inuit metaphor.

RESIDENTIAL The Tierhaus Urban Residence project focused on how the building design could fit into the urban fabric of Berlin’s complex infrastructure and habitual spaces. Located in a small park, the site acts as a buffer between Berlin’s congested city and tranquil outdoor green spaces.

VISUALIZATION

The building's design reduces its on-ground footprint and creates more outdoor space for the elderly inhabitants to live in and enjoy. The design consists of modular efficiency units based around two central cores. These modular units are arranged around these cores so that each unit creates large amounts of outdoor space for the unit above. The wood slat screen around the internal living spaces differentiates the public and private space for the residences and the people passing through the park.

Formally, the building is at the same scale as the surrounding buildings while the screen acts as an extension of the building that the site sits next to and hides the units irregular configuration. The modular units maintain a similar FAR to typical Berlin efficiency units and protrude in different directions, creating different unique experiences within the park and city.

STUDY MODELS

The design preserves the park in some sense, creating more space for the parks inhabitants to congregate and interact through the day on the ground. The building also respects the courtyard of the existing building not obstructing the view of the park. The building blends in with the surroundings, completing the site but not taking away from the life in the park. The Tierhaus design developed through various refinements of creating a treehouse, respecting the parks context. The Tierhaus design solidified this idea by making each unit accessible to outdoor space directly from the individual unit. The outdoor spaces are created from the roofs of each unit. The building preserves the sites green space by reducing the buildings footprint to forty percent of the total site capacity . The site is located against an existing courtyard influencing the two separate buildings. This allowed for the existing courtyard to have unobstructed views and access to the park. The wood slat screen evolved into a secondary envelope, separating the units from the public and private spaces of the park. The screen protects the privacy of the residences, while still allowing sunlight into the interiors.
