Note from the Triangle Area Campus Minister "My time in Baptist ministry on campus changed the very direction of my life." This phrase is not just one we hope to hear years from now as current CBSF students graduate, but rather one I hear regularly as I have the opporunity to interact with Baptist ministry alumni from campuses across the state. With each alumni conversation, there are questions about what Baptist ministry on campus looks like. Most want to know if we have a building we work out of, or how we're connected across North Carolina. As I work to answer that question each time, my answer boils down to simply: "everything is different and nothing is different."

As you read, I hope that you'll find ways to celebrate the new- that still carries an old, familiar, flavor. I hope that you'll read about how CBSF students are engaging and that it will draw your mind back to formative ministry moments from your own past. As you do, know that you are appreciated. The ways in which you've supported CBSF's formation in the Triangle have been amazing and crucial to what's happened in the last few semesters. The best is still ahead of us! Thank you!

Gone are the brick-and-morar buildings of ministry past, but in their place are growing communties of students celebrating in campus and congregation based spaces. Yes, much has changed. Yet, in these new and innvoative spaces of ministry, students are still finding ways to engage through leadership, service, community, and theological engagement. These old ministry tennants are still at the core of Baptist ministry on campus through the Cooperative Baptist Student Fellowship. This semester's end update will give you a glimpse into how these tennants of growth exist on campuses in the Triangle.

Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas from Lawrence, Heather and Jack.

Engagement Through Leadership

Studen t Leadership At its core, CBSF is a student lead endevor. With the start of each new year, students are invited to apply to join the CBSF student leadership team and become a part of the deeper discussion of what the ministry looks like and how it exists to be the presence of Christ on their campus. Student leaders serve one term, filling a specific position. In addition to the duties of their leadership area, they also meet monthly for joint team planning. Campus Minist ry Internships In addition to student leadership, CBSF also provides space for three campus ministry interns to explore their calling to vocational ministry. Interns are given opportunities to plan and lead events throughout the ministry year. Internships with CBSF do not exist as much for "aiding" ministers as they do to find opportunities to engage campus ministry in ways that they would in a fulltime Campus Minister role. 2017-2018 Interns are:

Engagement through Service

S e r v i n g C a m p u s and C o m m u n i t y Serving those around us is not just good for the community, it is at the core of what it means to follow Christ. This semester students worked with both refugee and American children in apartment complexes in Chapel Hill and Raleigh and sent Christmas cards to children in need across the United States. Conversations this semester centered around how we can better serve in the world as the Church. In addition to more regular service events throughout the spring semester, students will also spend Spring Break serving both in North Carolina and outside of the state.

Engagement through Community

Building Community Through weekly gatherings, on-campus meetups and social events on and off campus, students have been given the opporunity to build relationships with peers in fun and formative ways. Events this fall included: on-campus lunches, coffee gatherings, an evening at the NC State Fair, frozen yogurt on Franklin/Hillsborough streets, and Christmas gatherings in all three campus areas.

Engagement Through Theological Exploration

Spiritual Formation Each week in Chapel Hill (University Baptist Church), Raleigh (Forest Hills Baptist Church), and Durham (Duke Chapel) CBSF groups gather for discussions centered around faith and life. These discussions range in depth and leadership but all seek to aid students in discovering who they are and where God is calling them. In addition to weekly meetings, two of the groups attended student led fall retreats in Foscoe, NC (UNC-CH) and Snead's Ferry, NC (Raleigh). Topics this semester included discussions on the Kingdom of God, the ways following Jesus can be countercultural, and a preparation for (and introduction to, for some) the season of Advent.
