A modern ski village nestled at the base of Crested Butte Mountain. Mt. Crested Butte derives its name from the craggy faced butte that rises abruptly from the valley floor of the East River to over 12,000 feet. Founded in 1974, the original town plat included 11 subdivisions, known as Chalet Village Additions. These generally surround the base of the ski area. Other subdivisions include Gold Link, Elk Run, Overlook, Sunlight Ridge, Timberland, and Prospect, the finest ski-in/ski-out community in the rockies.
The Town of Crested Butte
Founded in 1882 and designated a National Historic District in 1974, Crested Butte originated as a coal mining town. Today, Crested Butteâ€™s main street, Elk Avenue, is a visual feast of fine restaurants, bars, and shops. The Victorian architecture of the mining era is preserved throughout the town.
Meridian Lake Park/ Meridian Lake Meadows

Red Lady (the mountain) gets its name from a bowl on Mt. Emmons which faces the town from the West. Holding snow into the early summer, Red Lady is a local’s favorite for late skiing. How it got its name reaches back in local lore.
The common story around town is that the many red lights from the red light district used to cast a hue on Mt. Emmons at night–hence the name. But, given the available wattage of the turn of the century light bulbs, we thought a little more research was called for. 75-year-old “Whitey” Sporcich says he doesn’t know. “We always just called it that. Maybe because it used to have a burn down the upper left section that was kind of red colored.” A short conversation with town patriarch Tony Mihelich may have solved the mystery. “Sometimes when the sun set just right in the summer, it looked just like a picture of a red lady up there.” At 93 years of age, when Tony gave us this story, it didn’t make much sense to question him. His version works just fine for us.
