Parker, who adds, “When a product leaves our workshop, we hope that it will be loved enough to travel through generations of the recipient’s family.” Geoffrey Parker customers include acclaimed designers, private yacht or jet owners and celebrities looking for highly personalized gifts. Parker also notes that professional players appreciate the ability to customize a board without compromising the quality and fairness of the game, and reports the company supplies the prize board for the backgammon world championships. Citing elaborate items like a customized alligator skin Monopoly set with sterling silver cards and gilded pieces (approximately $890,000), Parker explains, “We often say to our clients with unusual ideas that almost anything is possible…you just have to have the right budget.” Insisting that craftsmanship truly distinguishes the family business, Parker states, “Many try to copy our designs and our style, but our craftsmen and women have an incredible talent, which is difficult to replicate.”  Founded in 1820 as a modest cutlery shop in Paris’ 3rd arrondissement, Puiforcat now ranks

Amélie de Cagny, the company’s director of marketing operations and communications, reports that in the 1920s, Jean Puiforcat took his creative spirit from the dining table to the game table. “Under his influence, the house expanded its collections with decorative pieces and functionally elegant items of ‘art de vivre’ such as games, pocket accessories or boxes,” explains de Cagny. “When we started working on the idea of a poker set, the main focus was to create something exceptional, different from any offerings already available on the market,” says de Cagny, who notes that although some other high-end sets are presented

rom billiards to backgammon, there is no shortage of pastimes to accommodate some friendly competition, whether the players are novices or master-class champions. When art enters the game room — concepts like crystalline billiards tables, sterling silver poker chips or diamond-encrusted chessmen — the results can be spectacular. One of the world’s leading names in fine table game merchandise is England-based Geoffrey Parker, whose high-end products (chess, backgammon, dominoes, and cribbage, even luxury Monopoly) have been treasured gifts and heirlooms for more than 60 years. “Geoffrey, my grandfather, who founded Geoffrey Parker, always had a passion for well-crafted luxury products,” reports sales director Elliot Parker. “His dedication to perfection has been something handed down from generation to generation of Parkers,” says the founder’s grandson, who notes that to this day, nothing leaves the company workshop without a family member scrutinizing it. “You could say an eye for detail is a hereditary trait,” quips

in elegant boxes, their contents are rather generic. “Our set had to be different and our designer created every single item, including the chips (500 of them) made in lacquered stainless steel and decorated with motifs of colors picked up from the playing cards designed by Jean Puiforcat,” explains de Cagny. While famous for his silversmithing, Jean Puiforcat was also a talented graphic artist whose playing cards were exhibited at the 1937 world’s fair in Paris. That original artwork is now the signature of the company’s poker set.  “Just like the poker set, Puiforcat’s backgammon set is a full creation, and all the items are bespoke,” says de Cagny, who adds, “This set embodies Puiforcat’s commitment to quality and refinement.” The set, which sells for approximately $35,000, features an elegant board of contrasting Makassar ebony and sycamore, with sterling silver inlaid in the checkers and cubes. The company’s Art Deco heritage is represented by Puiforcat’s dice tray, based on a 1929 drawing by Jean Puiforcat and upholstered with fine Hermès leather to soften the fall of the dices thrown from the small tumbler.

includes chess sets among its elegant line of merchandise, and Tiffany & Co. sells a sterling silver and 24-karat-gold set for $75,000, as well as poker chips packaged in nothing less than a Tiffany-blue leather box. Teckell, a fashion-forward Italian manufacturer of sleek recreational products, has created a chess set consisting of a glass-topped marble board and crystal chessmen adorned with 24-karat gold and chrome-plated brass. Foosball is a game many remember from college, when the tables were pedestrian and durable enough to withstand abuse from rowdy, beer-splashing students. But in 2017, Hermès introduced its own maple-and-calfskin foosball table priced about $70,000. Teckell incorporates glass, nickel and polished Canaletto walnut into foosball tables for those who appreciate a more contemporary aesthetic. Teckell’s philosophy revolves around blending technological innovation with legendary Italian design to create “artwork for living.” Reporting that nature is a constant source of inspiration, architect and Teckell CEO Gianfranco Barban explains, “I will occasionally ask myself how nature would have designed the objects that surround us.” He queries, “Would they have been created in a solid color or with a ruler and T-square?,” and quickly responds, “Definitely not.” Located in Milan, the heart of the Italian fashion industry, is Impatia, whose sleek reinventions of classic products infuse unexpected sensuality into games like billiards, table tennis, backgammon, and poker. Glass is the dominant material used in

Impatia’s gleaming expressions of modernism, which transforms an ordinary ping-pong table into a piece of art — a sculptural construction of transparent tabletop and legs with optional 24-karat gold hardware — that nobody would choose to hide in a basement. “At Impatia, we believe that each creation is a tale of excellence and hope to take our clients on a human-to-human journey, which explores technical development, and showcases high-quality materials and results in incomparable refined aesthetics,” says founder and creative director Gregg Brodarick. All of the company’s products are made-to-order and specifically customized to each client’s preferences, with pool tables typically ranging from about $58,000 to $70,000, and ping-pong tables priced up to $25,000. Brodarick insists that Impatia’s “Made in Italy” tradition provides access to extraordinary talent — the same craftsmen and artisans that have made luxury brands like Ferrari, Gucci and Poltrona Frau so legendary — from across the country. While the company’s designs are unabashedly modern, they are often inspired by classical traditions. “The inspiration behind the aesthetic of Impatia’s luxury game tables has always been to reimagine the classics, says Brodarick, noting traditional Italian materials like marble and leather complement the more contemporary glass and metalwork. The founder reports, “Our clients are thrilled to find a functional game table that can be tailor-made to their space and proudly showcased in their home, doubling as a prominent design piece.”

Throughout the game of chess’ centuries of development, there have been ample opportunities for craftsmen and artists to elevate the board and pieces into museum-worthy objets d’art. One of the most stunning, audacious chess sets ever created is Australian artist Colin Burn’s Pearl Royale set, currently exhibited in a Beverly Hills art gallery and valued at $4 million. The set’s solid 18-karat-gold kings alone are encrusted with enough diamonds and sapphires to stock a jewelry store. Burn played chess as a child and received a beautiful set from his parents as a gift, the genesis of inspiration for his extravagant creation. Noting the game was a natural progression from the popular pastime of playing with toy soldiers, Burn suggests, “Chess was popular because it embodied the same spirit and challenge.” In 2008, the artist began designing the ultimate chess set, explaining, “My dream was to create the world’s finest chess set for the world’s greatest players to do battle!” All pieces in the artist’s Pearl Royale set are encrusted in white diamonds (a whopping total of 510 karats) and the more significant pieces are accented with deep blue Sri Lankan sapphires, considered the finest in the world. Burn was determined to crown the heads of each piece with black or white South Pacific pearls. “I wanted to create the most beautiful chess set and it had to be dressed in all its regalia, with the most beautiful diamonds and rich blue sapphires fit for kings and queens,” explains Burn. hen you hear the word “kitchen,” it is easy to imagine the basic essentials that make up a kitchen — the gentle creak of the cabinet doors, the precisely timed clicks of a stove igniting gas to fire, the cool touch of stainless steel appliances. But what about the iconic kitchen table? Today’s trendsetters may still say that kitchen islands are “in” and the standard wooden kitchen table is “out.” But as top craftsmen and professionals in the interior design industry will discuss, the concept of a kitchen table has changed and its legacy reflects more than just a place to eat one’s meals. The kitchen itself is fondly referred to as the “heart of the home.” Designers like Heather Hungeling of Heather Hungeling Design note that nearly all projects start with the kitchen, “whether someone is building a new 10,000-square-foot house or completing a smaller remodel.” Having worked primarily on kitchen and bath projects, Hungeling says that prioritizing a kitchen’s design is key, as finding the perfect balance of style, appliances and space can sometimes make this room a pain point on a project. Barbara Sallick, co-founder and senior vice president of design for Waterworks, agrees, noting that its level of importance has become increasingly clear to clients. “[They are] becoming more informed about the importance of planning for a perfectly functioning kitchen, one that marries their lifestyle and design aesthetics,” says Sallick,


as her experiences working on her newly published book The Perfect Kitchen have led her to a new perspective on the process of kitchen design. Both Hungeling and Sallick confirm that designing the layout of a kitchen is akin to mapping traffic patterns. These patterns form around what vital pieces are taking up space and where, from the distance between the refrigerator to the pantry, the appliances, and more. A kitchen table, synonymous with gathering and family meals, should naturally have a set place within the room, raising a multitude of decisions to consider: What size would work best for the needs of this home? Will this piece be multifunctional in terms of storage or a workstation? Does it fit the space well enough, or would an island work better? And ultimately, how does the placement of a table affect the flow of traffic in a kitchen?

When considering recent trends in kitchen design, Sallick notes that we are currently living in the “era of the island.”

Questions like these are crucial to ask on behalf of a kitchen’s design, which is personal to every client, according to Tyler Hays, founder of BDDW, a luxury boutique brand known for heirloom-quality furniture. “Some are more concerned with the fewest steps between things like the sink, refrigerator and stove. The needs and use of [kitchens] vary widely,” he says, from professional chefs to those who just like to entertain. No matter the exact specifications of where appliances or cabinets were placed, there is always a centralized hub where families and guests gather, for meals or otherwise. The physical kitchen table, therefore, has since transformed into a concept, materializing in different ways and styles. For some, a table is a marble-topped center island with a butcher’s block, and bar stools along its edge. For others, it might be lengthy and handcrafted, with enough chairs and room to act as a dining room and office. It is the dynamics of the kitchen that help to develop its character, and further what its “table” looks like.

These dynamics have become more abundantly clear since the beginning of the pandemic, as more people are taking a closer look inside their homes and the rooms they frequently use. “The kitchen has emerged as the community center of many household activities and celebrations,” Sallick states. “We spend much more time talking about food and preparing meals, especially during our COVID-19 quarantine.” For many, the kitchen table, no matter its appearance, has been the most important part of the kitchen — the soul within the heart of a home. Hungeling notes the benefits of a kitchen table are because of the focus on family, as it emotes a more soulful experience when everyone gets to sit down together. “We’ve been able to make these nice dinners to nurture ourselves and to make us feel better, it’s comforting,” Having crafted a variety of furniture pieces, Hays says a good table should be sturdy with a soul or history. “It should be able to take abuse and still look good, either durable enough to not show use or if it does, it takes on a patina with age.” A true

craftsman, Hays prefers a classic wooden table without resin or lacquers, affirming that “wood looks good and wears well on its own.” Hungeling concurs with having a table with character, as it speaks to a more authentic feel, but also to finding ways that fit the needs of a client. For example, she suggests for someone looking to get more use out of a traditional farmhouse table with beautiful patina to add a marble top, adding both beauty and a functional workspace. Though the recent global situation has affected our lives at home, Sallick says there truly aren’t any trends, current or future, that will dictate what the perfect kitchen table looks like, or the right choice between choosing a table or an island. “In my grandmother’s kitchen, which I remember fondly, the table sat squarely in the middle of the room; it was the prep space, the community center, the dining place. No matter how many people we were, we always gathered around the table, had great conversations and created great memories. Table or island, many cabinets or few, the kitchen is the place that brings people together.”

The headland has been home to countless lighthouses, some of which can still be seen along the golf course, and was once grazed by sheep and cattle before it became an unforgettable destination for players. “Old Head has been a significant landmark throughout Irish history,” says Dornford. “In 1993, the course began to be built, and in 1997, the links were opened for play, becoming a part of global golfing history that will be forever admired.” Nature and Ireland’s culture are ruling forces that can be felt throughout the course with every swing. The waves that are crashing against the cliffs, along with ocean views on both sides are enough to make this course a challenging favorite. “Nine holes play along the cliff tops with all 18 holes providing unsurpassed ocean views,” says Dornford. “With the ever-changing sea breezes, the course provides a stern but fair test to the touring pro and the high handicapper alike.” Though the setting of the course alone was enough to skyrocket Old Head Golf Links to the top of many golfers’ bucket lists, the collaboration of designers takes it to a new level. “The course was designed and constructed by a unique team, Ron Kirby, the late Eddie Hackett, the late Dr. Joe Carr — Ireland’s most successful international amateur golfer—Paddy Merrigan, Liam Higgins, and finally, Haulie O’Shea,” according to Dornford.
