In Honor of Latino Heritage Month The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute presents:
Iris Martinez Trailblazer for Hispanic Women in Government
Wednesday, October 6 7 p.m. SIUC Student Center Auditorium Iris Martinez broke new ground for Hispanic women when she was elected Illinois State Senator in 2003, making her the first Latina to hold that office and, subsequently, the first to hold the Senate leadership post of Assistant Majority Leader. In 2009, she was named president of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators, a group of more than 300 Hispanic state legislators throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. She is former chair and current vice chair of the Illinois Senate Pensions and Investments Committee which oversees laws and regulations affecting state employee pension systems. Sen. Martinez created and expanded the Grow Your Own Teachers Program to bring educators to underserved areas and she secured funding for programs that help families affected by HIV/AIDS. She is a graduate of Northeastern Illinois University.
