YESTERDAY Located in Casalvieri, a small town of the “Ciociaria area in the province of Frosinone, Gemar is currently managed by Angelo and Genesio Rocca, respectively grandson and great-grandson of Angelo Rocca, who founded one of the first Italian companies in the field of balloon manufacturing, back in 1902. A CENTURY-OLD STORY Angelo Rocca was very young when he migrated to Marseilles, France, where he started as a street vendor selling the balloons he bought from a small local factory. Back then, balloons were filled with air and hydrogen. Angelo, who wanted more from life than being a mere street vendor, did all he could to learn the secrets of balloon manufacturing, and discovered that they were made of a natural latex rubber, non-synthetic and unstable. Once he had acquired the technique, he decided to produce the balloons himself and to return to his homeland as an entrepreneur, putting his intuition to practice. He created a laboratory at home and began making the first balloons. His raw material, latex rubber, arrived from Malaysia in rolled-up sheets that Angelo would cut in two, overlap and glue together before hitting their edges with a hammer. This artisan process resulted in the balloons. Production was of course limited to a handful of pieces a day, but the fame of the small Casalvieri laboratory soon spread all over Italy. In fact, Angelo would sell his products to clients from Sicily, Puglia and from northern Italy. As no efficient means of communication was available, buyers would show up at the laboratory in person to place an order, and sometimes were forced to sojourn in Casalvieri for several days until their order was ready. The artisan process continued for years, years marked by war and misery, but

Angelo stood his ground and overcame those hard times thanks to his persistence and strong will. After the war, production rapidly increased and included printing advertisement images on the balloons. The ink used at the time was anilinebased and the printing block was made of cherry wood. In the meanwhile, following Angelo Rocca's example, other citizens took up work in this field, cooperating with each other in an organized entrepreneurship. THE ARRIVAL OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES Angelo Rocca's entrepreneurship was inherited by his son Genesio in the years following the war. The production process was still a craftsmanship, although the first images of the future company could already be glimpsed. Immediately after the war, the company, guided by the entrepreneur spirit of Genesio, introduced new manufacturing processes, including rubber vulcanization, a process discovered by Mr. Goodyear in 1839. Insisting with research, new working methodologies and new techniques, in 1970 Genesio finally took the

definite step from artisan manufacturing to industrial production, installing the first automated production line and therefore producing a large number of balloons each day, with a remarkably superior quality. INDUSTRIAL ESTABLISHMENT AND THE BIRTH OF GEMAR. Angelo Rocca, Genesio's son and the current director, was introduced early to the company and is the person behind the completion of the company's industrial development and Gemar's birth. With Angelo, Gemar is now part of the international context in the field, and is gradually climbing up the steps towards the worldwide leadership of balloon manufacturers. The preferred industrial process is the “dipping” method, that allows for better control of each phase and ensures final quality compared to other processes. Gemar’s balloons are produced in 4 types: pastel, crystal, metallic/pearlescent and fluorescent. Available in more than 70 colors and 30 shapes, they can be used in all commercial sectors, from street vendors to parties, from advertisement to balloon art. EUROPE'S NUMBER ONE COMPANY Today Gemar specializes in the production and printing of latex balloons and is the first company

in Europe in terms of quantity and quality. Gemar's balloons are entirely produced in Italy, in full compliance with national and European environmental regulations. ìVery concerned with Corporate Social Responsibility, Gemar has perfectly integrated the strategic company vision and ethic issues, managing internal social impact problems as well as those involving the territory in which the company operates. Gemar has obtained the 100% MADE IN ITALY Certificate issued by the institution for the protection of Italian producers, which guarantees the true origin and quality of Italian products. TOMORROW The first latex balloons were produced in Great Britain in 1847. Since then the product, the market and the technology have naturally taken giant steps. As we have seen, Gemar has played a main role in this evolution, establishing itself as a global company with know-how and strong propensity to marketing. The creation of a global network adds value to the company's image, so that it is symmetrically identified to the world of latex balloons and parties. Gemar is future-oriented, constantly committed with the trading of its products and with the research of new markets in which it can establish itself thanks to its peculiar abilities. ACCADEMIA DEL PALLONCINO ITALIANO The need to transfer the acquired technical knowledge and the fascination by the Italian style have led to the creation of the Italian Balloon Academy, “Accademia del Palloncino Italiano”. It is an association whose purpose is to offer professional training courses and to preserve and diffuse the art of decoration using Gemar's unique Italian latex balloons. The starting point for anyone who wishes to approach balloon arts professionally, the Accademia transfers the indispensable cultural notions required to fine tune techniques and to provide new stimuli to one's own creativity, and is also an excellent research and improvement tool for anyone who is already a balloon artist.

1. Inflate 5 modeling balloons D2 in red 45 and make a quintuplet. To facilitate the process of twisting we recommend leaving a small part of the balloon deflated so the air inside the balloon can move freely during the twisting or by deflating the balloon slightly before tying in order to make it soften it and thus reduce the risk of rupture.

5. Repeat the same operation on the third, fourth and fifth balloon.

2. Make a “PINCH TWIST” on one of the five balloons, at the center of the cluster of the 5 balloons.

3. Create a bubble of about 3 cm on the following balloon and insert a new modeling balloon D2.

4. Continue by creating another bubble on the next balloon and join to the single balloon that was inserted in the previous step.

6. Close onto the first balloon and eliminate the balloon in excess.

7. Repeat the same operation three more times.

8. At this point, add another 5 modeling balloons D2 to the composition, the base will now contain a total of 10 modeling balloons D2.

7

9. Create a bubble on one of the 10 modeling balloons D2 that have been positioned vertically. Add a new modeling balloon D2 that will be used to continue in a horizontal direction for the structure of the top part of the hat.

10. Take the last inserted modeling balloon D2 and join horizontally to the second vertical modeling balloon D2.

11. Continue the construction horizontally by joining the last inserted modeling balloon to the second vertical modeling balloon, then to the third, the fourth and so on ... until you reach the tenth balloon.

12. Close onto the first modeling balloon D2 and eliminate the balloon in excess.

13. Repeat this step 7 times to obtain the top part of the Sombrero.

14. To make the brim of the hat make a "PINCH TWIST" to each modeling balloon D2.

15. Inflate 2 modeling balloons D2 in red 45 and gold 39, tie together to form a couplet. Insert the 2 balloons into one of the bubbles of the top part of hat.

16. Unite the red and gold balloons (couplet) and insert into the second modeling balloon D2 of the upper part of the sombrero.

17. Continue by doing the same for all remaining balloons and by alternating the red & gold colours.

18. Repeat 6 times step n.16.

19. Continue by creating a "PINCH TWIST" on each modeling balloon D2.

20. Unite the “PINCH TWISTS to each other to create a total of 6 bubbles.

21. Make the embroidery for the upper part of the Sombrero with a deflated modeling balloon D5 and some green florist wire. Insert the wire into a metallic gold deflated modeling balloon D2. Shape the balloon in order to obtain an embroidery dĂŠcor as illustrated.

22. Make the laces for the Sombrero with deflated modeling balloons D2. Weave a gold & red modeling balloon D2 into a braid. Create 2 laces for the Sombrero.

23. Make the Pon Pons by inflating a red modeling balloon D2 to its full length, create a bubble at the upper end and deflate the remaining part of the balloon. Glue the Pon Pons around the brim of the hat.

A Blooming Arch of Daisy Flowers The modeling balloon D2 is a versatile product for decoration with which it is possible to create particular shapes and forms that cannot be achieved with conventional balloons. To use modeling balloons is quite simple but a few recommendations should be followed such as leaving a small

ACCADEMIA del PALLONCINO ITALIANO

part of the modeling balloon deflated to leave room for the air to move inside the balloon while the balloon is twisted and manipulated as well as to deflate the balloon slightly before tying so as to make it more soft and ductile thus reducing the risk of breakage.

DAISY • 65 D2 lavender 49 (13 D2 for each daisy, total 5 daisies) • 6 G90 yellow 02 (2 G90 for each large daisy, total 3 large daisies) • 4 A50 yellow 02 (2 A50 for each small daisy, total 2 small daisies)

1. Inflate 8 A50 balloons to a 10cm / 4 " size. Tie the balloons in pairs of 2 balloons.

5. Continue by adding the quatrain of A50 balloons A50 on top of the G90 and twist onto the pole as shown in previous step.

2. A pair of A50 balloons inflated to a 10cm / 4 " size. Twist 2 pairs together to form a quatrain. Make 2 quatrains with the A50 balloons.

6. Inflate 4 modeling balloons D4 (leaving about 2cm of deflated balloon at the tip) and bind together to form a quatrain. Fix the quatrain of modeling balloons to the arch just on top of the "round" balloons at the base of the arch. Repeat steps 1 through 6 also for the second base of the arch.

3. Inflate 8 G90 balloons to an 18cm / 7 " size. Create 4 pairs of G90. Twist 2 pairs together to form a quatrain. Make 2 quatrains with the G90 as shown in step 1 and 2.

4. Position the 2 iron bases in a parallel position and fix the end of the tube to each of the 2 bases in order to create the shape and structure of an arch. Place the quatrain of G90 at bottom of the base and twist onto the base of the arch.

7. Twist the modeling balloons D4 around the structure of the arch (tube) paying attention to keep the balloons firmly together to create a twisted effect.

8. Exploiting the full length of the modeling balloon tie the balloons with a deflated D4 and fasten the twisted balloons firmly to the structure.

18

9. Take 2 ends of the modeling balloons and twist together.

10. Cut off the ends of the balloons and tie the remaining parts together with two knots, repeat the operation with the other 2 modeling balloons.

11. Insert a new segment of the arch. Repeat steps 7 through 10 for 5 times in order to cover the entire structure of the arch. If needed insert further segments to complete the arch.

12. Inflate another modeling balloon D4 and roll around the joint of each segment. Repeat for 5 times to cover the joints of each segment.

13. The arch is finished and ready for decoration.

14. To make the large daisies inflate the modeling balloons D2 with 5 pumps of air. To make the small daisies inflate the modeling balloons D2 with 3 pumps of air. For each daisy you will need 12 modeling balloons D2 to make the petals and 1 modeling balloon D2 for the corolla of the flower.

15. Tie the tip with the end of each modeling balloon to form a ring. The rings will be the petals of the daisy. To complete the petals of each daisy repeat this operation 12 times.

16. Inflate another modeling balloon D2 with two pumps of air.

19. A piece of the corolla with the petals of the daisy.

20. Once you have finished the sequence of step 18 tie the 2 ends of the modeling balloon to form a ring and obtain the daisy.

23. Insert the pair of balloons into the centre of the daisy. Continue by tying the daisies to the arch with deflated modeling balloons or use the laces of centre of the flower.

24. Here's a “Blooming Arch of Daisy Flowers”. If you wish you may add a greater number of daisies but always in odd numbers.

17. With this balloon make a bubble or "PINCH" of about 2cm.

21. Make the center of the daisy with 2 round balloons. Inflate and create an "apple" shape with each round balloon. For each small daisy use 2 A50 balloons and for each large daisy use 2 G90 balloons.

18. Twist the bubble or "PINCH" into the joint of each ring/petal. Then proceed by creating another bubble or "PINCH", insert another petal and twist the bubble or “PINCH” into the joint of the ring/petal. Proceed with this sequence of alternating a bubble and a petal. Each daisy will be composed of 12 petals.

22. Combine the 2 apple-shaped balloons together.

Floral Arrangement of “White Flowers” Colourful or just plain white flowers, the important is that they are "Fantasy Flowers". The range of flowers that you can achieve with this technique is infinite. For this composition, the choice lies with white flowers. The realization of the composition is quite simple the only difficulty is in the realization of the flowers. This composition is

A heart symbolizes love always. It is often given to the loved one who receives it and has always been a strong emotion. It is a beautiful way to highlight the important moments that life offers. This decoration is extremely flexible, by using different colours of balloons this backdrop is ideal for marriages, to create a romantic setting or to create a pendant in the center of a ballroom. In Italy is it also a custom for religious ceremonies.

The Venetian Mask

During the era of the “Venetian Republic – Repubblica di Venezia”, the Venetians would usually disguise themselves behind masquerades not only during Carnival but also on many other occasions during the year, the desire to conceal and disguise their appearance was the most obvious: they did not want to be recognized. The so called “Macherieri” were experienced craftsmen that kept themselves busy with the creation of masks and disguises, such workshops spread everywhere becoming so popular that their ART was annexed to the College of Painters. These artisans also created their own set of rules called “Mariegola” in the first half of ' 500. Today you can still indulge yourself with beautiful handcrafted masks, you just need to search among the small traditional workshops spread around the ancient city of Venezia. The Masters of Accademia amaze us with a stunning creation that fits a Carnival theme as a backdrop in many areas. The creation was made with the Gemar Link Balloons GL6 that are so versatile and this

creation highlights the possibility of forming jagged & oblique shapes with this particular balloon. For the first time the Claudio introduces the use of single, double and triple GL6 link balloons in connection with the braids to form oblique angles and lines that are necessary for the perfect turn out of this sculpture. To strengthen and make this a 3-dimensional sculpture he has created a double mask, overlapping and connected with balloon fittings. To complete the uniformity of colour and enhance the visual effect he has filled in the open spaces with A50 balloons in Light Green and Black. The use of a project will facilitate the construction of this sculpture.

Fantasies of Pumpkins

Halloween is the name of a popular festival of pre-Christian origin, which is celebrated on the evening of October 31st which is the eve of All Saints Day (that's the meaning of the word Halloween). In modern tradition children dress up as witches, zombies, ghosts and vampires and go about knocking on the doors of homes screaming: "Trick or treat?". To keep away bad luck you should traditionally knock on 13 different doors. The theme is so interesting that it frees the ability to imagine truly creative decorations.

Gemar and the Masters of Accademia present a balloon decoration for all Halloween lovers. Pumpkins are the heart of this decoration that is made with the use of Gemar Pumpkin Punch Balls (59840-126). The print quality and the natural wedges of the balloon contribute to a create visual pumpkin. This decoration highlights the infinite possibilities to create balloon decorations with balloons that are not commonly used in professional balloon decorations, there are really no limits when it comes to imagination & creation.

A “Surprise” Present In this issue Gemar & Accademia present "A Surprise Present". This sculpture is designed and built with the Gemar Link Balloons™ and trimmed with Gemar round balloons. Again we discover the great versatility of Gemar Link Balloons™ as the sculpture was made by using both sizes of links in perfect harmony and unison: GL6/6” and GL13/13”. By inflating the balloons correctly you can admire how the joints and rows of balloons create perfect intersections for a solid and stable 3-D sculpture

ACCADEMIA del PALLONCINO ITALIANO

without any frames nor structures. By using different colours of Gemar Link Balloons™ we have designed a yellow ribbon meanwhile a bow of balloons is the finishing touch of this present. For a “SURPRISE” effect we have attached 2 helium inflated G220 80cm/31” balloons to the top of the present, these will automatically open the present to release a bunch of helium filled HAPPY BIRTHDAY balloons! The “Surprise Present” given the size is ideal for large spaces.

COLUMN OF HEARTS Valentine's Day is the celebration of love and is very popular in the world and especially in Europe. If each holiday is characterized by a special colour and symbol, red is the colour and the heart is the most expressive symbol for Valentine’s Day. Therefore red hearts have inspired this decoration to celebrate the most romantic day of the year.

ACCADEMIA del PALLONCINO ITALIANO

The decoration we are going to create is very simple to achieve and thanks to the extensive range of Gemar colours, the Masters of Accademia can create a vivid colour - dimension contrast by using 3 shades of red and 2 shades of rose, some of which with a metallic finish.

1. Frames, base, pole, tulle, tape and shear

3. By modelling the aluminium frames you will obtain 3 different sizes of hearts. Overlap the ends of each frame and fix strongly together with some tape making sure to cover all cutting edges. The large heart measures about 105cm/41”, the medium heart measures about 85cm/34”, the small heart measures about 65cm/26”.

2. With your hands shape the frames in order to realize 3 sizes of heart shapes. Starting from the centre each frame, fold each one into a “V” shape and then proceed by modeling both sides into a heart shape until the ends meet.

4. Inflate and tie the balloons two by two to create couplets that will be needed to cover the heart frames, use 1 shade of red for each frame. For the small heart use AM50 red 32 inflated to a 7,6/3” size; for the medium heart use A50 red 05 inflated to a 9cm/3,5” size; for the large heart use A50 red 45 inflated to a 10cm/4” size.

62

5. Make clusters consisting of 4 balloons by twisting together 2 couplets.

9. Use the metal base and the pole to assemble the sculpture. Position the pole into the metal base to make a support for the sculpture.

13. Inflate the 3 sizes of heart shapes CR6, CR and CR17, tie a modeling balloon D4 to the knots of each balloon, the loose ends will be used to tie the balloons to the sculpture.

6. Cover the frames with the clusters of 4 balloons and follow the colour sequence: small heart red 32; medium heart red 05; large heart red 45

10. Starting from the bottom, insert the large heart tilted by 45째 into the pole.

14. Proceed by using the heart shape balloons to decorate our sculpture. Position the heart balloons into the heart frames and to the external points of intersection.

7. Once finished you will obtain 3 hearts of balloons ready to be used in our sculpture.

11. Ensure the heart to the pole by using a modeling balloon to fix the heart in each point of intersection making sure that it has a firm hold to the pole.

15. Prepare the tulle that will be used to decorate the sculpture.

8. The 3 hearts are ready, the different colour shades and sizes will create a contrast between colour & dimension.

12.Proceed by fixing the medium and small heart as indicated in previous step in order to obtain a heart column. The hearts should be tilted by 45째 alternated first to the left and then to the right.

16. Finish the sculpture with pink tulle, the tulle is used to highlight the sculpture and to mask the pole.

WEDDING COLUMN

A column has always a stunning effect for an important occasion such as a Wedding but it is also suitable for many other special occasions. It’s a useful décor for large spaces like gardens or it can ideally be placed at the entrance of a chapel or banquet hall. The dimensions of the column enhance the space and its surroundings. Each column has been topped with a giant 30” balloon stuffed with

ACCADEMIA del PALLONCINO ITALIANO

helium filled balloons in different sizes, colour & prints. The giant balloons shall burst and release a cascade of balloons on the bride & groom creating a breath taking effect as shown in this issue. The realization of this décor is quite simple and requires basic technical knowledge, the only trick is to inflate and assemble the balloons in correct proportions between base, body and top.

70

By following our step by step instructions you will be able to create your very own column easily as illustrated below.

Materials & Accessories (for each column) Equipment: 1. 50x50cm Metal Base 2. 2 mt Aluminium Pole 3. Ivy leaves 4. Palloni in lattice di ottima qualità dimensioni: Gemar latex balloons for the column: • 24 A50 balloons in transparent 00 • 22 AM50 balloons in burgundy 52 • 24 AM50 balloons in pearl white 28 • 10 GM90 balloons in burgundy 52 • 10 GS110 “Roses All Around” in transparent 00 • 10 GMS110 “Roses All Around” in burgundy 52 • 5 GMS110 “Roses All Around” in pearl white 28 Gemar latex balloons for stuffed topping: • 1 G220 giant balloon transparent 00 • 5 A50 balloons transparent 00 • 10 AM50 balloons (burgundy 52 & pear white 28 • 10 GM90 balloons (burgundy 52 & pearl white 28) • 10 GMS110 “Roses All Around” (burgundy 52 & pearl white 28) • 5 GS110 “Roses All Around” transparent 00 • D4 modelling balloon

1. Create the base with 5 balloons (5 balloons in a row) using burgundy 52 printed “Roses All Around”. Inflate balloons to a 9” size

2. Overlap the base with another 5 balloons (5 balloons in a row) using transparent 00 balloons printed “Roses All Around”. 1 GM90 burgundy 52 balloon has been inserted into each printed balloon. Inflate printed balloons to an 8” size.

3. Demonstration of how to insert a balloon inside another balloon, you can use a stick or other suitable equipment.

71

4. The internal balloon should always be inflated smaller than the outside balloon in order to obtain the double balloon visual effect.

8. Follow the colour pattern: pearl white 28; transparent 00; pearl white 28; transparent 00; burgundy 52.

12. Stuff a giant transparent 00 G220 balloon with plain AM50 and GM90 balloons as well as printed balloons “Roses All Around” in transparent 00, pearl white 28 & burgundy 52. (see listed materials “topping for each column”) At this stage we can complete our work by positioning the stuffed balloon onto the column. Tie a D4 modelling balloon to the not of the stuffed balloon to create a joint between the stuffed balloon and the column.

5. Continue the column by using pearl white 28 balloons printed “Roses All Around”. Inflate balloons to a 7” size.

9. By following the colour pattern illustrated in step 8, the colours will wrap around the column harmoniously.

13. Fix the stuffed balloon to the column by wrapping the free end of the modelling around the balloons of the column.

6. Complete the base with 5 AM50 burgundy 52 balloons. Inflate balloons to a 5” size.

10. The first part of the column is finished.

14. To enhance the beauty add some ivy leaves throughout the body of the column making sure to follow the same pattern of the colours.

7. Make the body of the column by using 5 balloons but in 3 different colours: 2 A50 transparent 00, 2 AM50 pearl white 28 and 1 AM50 burgundy 52. The visual effect is neutral and not too heavy, just a spot of burgundy enriches the décor. Inflate balloons to a 4” size, each row is composed of 5 balloons for a total of 12 rows.

11. Make the top base by using 5 AM50 balloons in burgundy 52 inflated to a 5” size. Then add 5 burgundy 52 balloons printed “Roses All Around” inflated to a 7” size. To complete add the last row of double balloons by using 5 balloons in transparent 00 printed “Roses All Around” previously filled with 1 GM90 balloon in burgundy 52. Inflate the last row of double balloons to a 9” size. ( see steps 2 – 3 - 4)

15. Our Wedding Column is finished and ready for our event.

Joker's Hat

Gemar & Accademia in this issue present the “Joker’s Hat”. In this occasion the Masters of Accademia have made a creation for Carnival characterized by a carefree fun spirit. Carnival is not only an Italian tradition, it is celebrated worldwide. During the Russian Carnival, the so called “Maslenitza” you will eat “Blini” and you will celebrate the arrival of Spring. Everyday a celebration is dedicated to someone special with street shows, amusements, open feasts and lots of music. The Russian soul “Russkaja Dushà” reveals all its joy and excitement in Moscow as well as in other cities throughout Russia, as it is dressed in bells and funny masks that make this occasion very similar to the more traditional Carnivals. Among the most famous Carnivals lies Nice where parades of masks are characterized by the “battles of flowers”.

The Carnival of Rio is probably the most extraordinary and wild expression of art and popular culture of Brasil. It is the most famous celebration and it takes place each year in February during a week of dancing, parading, music and foolishness. Carnival in London? Notting Hill of course. In one of Europe’s most multi ethnic cities, Carnival is a show of different folk traditions that melt into one spectacular cocktail. Meanwhile the New Orleans Carnival has become the most crazy celebration of all time, here the festivities are taken so serious that this period of the year has been nick named “madness”. Last but not least remains Italy in which Venice remains the greatest and most famous Carnival for its fascination and appeal, an evergreen since the earliest documents testifying this celebration date more than 900 years.

76

However since 1873 the Carnival of Viareggio has also become an important event for party people worldwide. Started out as a simple parade of masks it has now become the Carnival of Europe, every year a month of partying, parades and masquerades are a must to celebrate this occasion. The “Joker’s Hat” has been realized with Gemar Link Balloons™ “GL6 & GL13” with the technique “horizontal-vertical” assembly in flashing and vibrant colours just like the occasion it celebrates.

The technique used is for an advanced level of knowledge and it enables us to create many three-dimensional sculptures. The use of this particular hat is vast and best for large environments, however if dimensions are reduced it can also be worn.

The New Year Tree Gemar, manufacturer of the Italian Balloon, is also specialized in “Balloon Art”. New techniques of “Balloon Art” are experimented continuously in co-operation with the Masters of Accademia Dario, Claudio and Gabriele who pay great attention to detail as well as very special care to all the work involved. In this issue Gemar & Accademia are proud to present their last creation, the “New Year Tree”. A unique and original décor to celebrate and welcome the coming New Year. This arrangement is a real sculpture that comes to life to enhance the festive and joyful atmosphere of the New Year but that also adds a touch of elegance and beauty thanks to the harmony of its shape and shadowing colour. The use of the Italian Balloon with a soul of high quality latex makes this décor even more special. Alongside unmistakable fashion lies the guarantee of a product designed and Made in Italy. By using Gemar link balloons™ “GL13 and GL6” 3-dimensional New Year trees can be made in larger scale too. The construction requires a good knowledge of the techniques as well as creativity. The use of Gemar link balloons™ allows the creation of decorations and sculptures without frames of any sort.

By using Gemar link balloons™ “GL13 and GL6” 3-dimensional New Year trees can be made in larger scale too. The construction requires a good knowledge of the techniques as well as creativity. The use of Gemar link balloons™allows the creation of decorations and sculptures without frames of any sort. By inserting Gemar round balloons inside the link balloons (ex.: round blue 51 inside link white

01) any shade of colour can be obtained that will have great chromatic effect on any decoration. Gemar round balloons are also ideal to create the decorative elements as well as the balls for the New Year Tree but are also ideal for small decorations, showcases and centrepieces. Technically round balloons are quite easy to use, the vast range of sizes and colours of Gemar’s round balloons make creations endless in any dimension or colour.

The Fantasy Flowers “La Strelitzia”

The “Fantasy Flowers” technique is among Gemar Balloons’ favourites because it allows to reach a mix of beauty, elegance and vivacity that makes each creation a unique work of art. Leader in the manufacture of balloons, Gemar proposes the realization of creative and innovative balloon compositions in collaboration with the Masters of “Accademia” (Accademy of Italian Balloons) that experiment new techniques for the use of balloons as decorative elements.

The “Strelitzia” or “Bird of Paradise” belongs to the family of the “Musaceae”, includes plants originating from southern Africa and very appreciated for their beauty. The history of the name honours Sophia Carlotta of Mecklemburg-Strelitz, who became Queen of Great Britain in 1761 by marrying George III.

102

The creations made by the Masters of Accademia are distinguished by their scrupulous attention to detail and for taking care of the work involved in all its phases. Below a photo of the Masters of Accademia, from left to right, Gabriele Del Cane, Dario Caminati, Claudio Casagrande.

ACCADEMIA del PALLONCINO ITALIANO

The materials used, in particular the Italian balloons manufactured by Gemar, are high quality products. Thanks to the durability, flexibility and vast range of shapes & sizes these balloons are suitable for any type of use. It’s also possible to obtain really surprising chromatic effects due to the wide range of colours available. The quest for the polyhedric appeal of form, the ability to shape ambitious fantasies without losing contact with reality consent the use of these balloon creations for any setting. Gemar Balloons combined to the creativeness of Accademia are the synthesis of a unique and authentic product. The procedure for carrying out the Fantasy Flower “Strelitzia” is described in this issue. We suggest you follow the next issues to learn more about the procedure for our other Fantasy Flowers.

How to make a “Strelitzia” Materials and accessories for the composition.

Materials required for the “Strelitzia” Fantasy Flower Arrangement Materials & tools required for each “Strelitzia”: • Gemar Balloons for each Strelitzia: 1 G90 green 12; 2 G90 purple 08, 3 GF90 orange 22 • Green wire for floral arrangements size 1mmx600mm (smaller sizes are not suitable) • Green or Brown “Stem Tex” tape for floral arrangements • 45cm plastic balloon sticks • Paints & paint brushes Materials & tools required for the Fantasy Flower arrangement: • Dry sponge for floral arrangements • Arrangement base of your choice (basket, platter or vase) • Decorative elements for your arrangement (leaves, tree branches, sisal etc…) • Scissors, Cutter, hot glue gun

103

1 - Inflate the balloons with an air compressor to their maximum size, this will loosen the elasticity of the balloon and make them less resistant to the wire.

7 - Remove the air inside the balloon by holding it with your fist clenched.

13 - Extend the stem of the flower with a 45 cm stick for balloons, taking care to cover it with the Stem-Tex.

2 - Cut the rib of balloons to remove excessive thickness at the base of the flower once all the petals are assembled.

8 - Fix the balloon to the wire with the Stem Tex, taking care to cover all ends of the balloon and the wire.

14 - With a thin tip brush and with undiluted yellow paint, we create some color effects on the Strelitzia.

3 - Bend the wires making them rotate 360째.

9 - This operation (see step 8) must be repeated for all balloons (petals) that make up the flower.

15 - Shade off each petal by painting from the top to the bottom.

4 - We obtain folded wires with an angle of about 10째.

10 - Assemble each flower by putting the petals in a row. The balloons should be placed in the following order: one green petal, one purple petal, two orange petals, one purple petal and one orange petal.

16 - The effect we should obtain will be to mask the colour difference between the Stem-Tex and the balloon, making it more realistic.

5 - Insert the wire inside the balloon.

11 - Hold all petals very tight and fix altogether with the Stem-Tex.

17 - Fixed into the arrangement, the Strelitzia will seem a real flower with all its characteristics but with the advantage that it will never die.

6 - Pull the balloon until the wire starts to bend.

12 - Direct the petals in order to obtain a crest.

18 - Our Strelitzia flower arrangement.

ACCADEMIA del PALLONCINO ITALIANO

Balloons & Kids Claudio Casagrande e Gabriele Del Cane

In this issue we are pleased to show the technique for building wall panels and columns. The décor that we propose is suitable for large spaces and outdoor environments like a garden. A Balloon Wall Panel is a great solution to create a fantastic background for a stage or simply for a buffet table as shown in the garden party below. We have used Complimentary Balloon Columns

ACCADEMIA del PALLONCINO ITALIANO

A Child’s Garden Party to define the area and to make the grey areas of empty space more colourful. The techniques used are simple but fundamental for a professional. The final effect is a beautiful and colourful garden décor suitable for a special occasion: a party for a child. The table settings and arrangements are the final touch.

To realize our decorations we have inflated G90 balloons to a 7” size and G120 balloons to a 9” size. The balloons must be tied in couples of 2 and are the base for creating each cluster of 4 balloons. Therefore we have used 2 sizes of clusters a smaller 7” cluster and a larger 9” cluster (each cluster is composed of 4 balloons). The clusters have been fixed onto nylon thread by alternating carefully the 2 sizes of clusters until we have reached the desired height. This operation must be repeated for each row of clusters paying attention to make care that the colour pattern is correct

in order to create the chromatic effect (as shown in our décor). With the same technique different designs of figures can be created. Once this operation is finished each row is fixed to a pole on a base, the pole is the back bone that ensures that the rows of balloons maintain stability and an orderly fashion. For the columns we use the pole as a structure without having to use nylon thread. The top of the columns are completed by using modelling balloons, tied and tangled together and by adding colourful A50 balloons to each end.

1) First Column: This photo shows the in size between the balloon clusters, each cluster composed of 4

3) Columns of the Balloon Wall Panel: All the columns have been to a pole on a base. The design is complete. To build this design we used a layout (illustrated below) that is very helpful

5) Base of the Column: For the complimentary balloon columns we have used only G120 to a 9” size but the colours have been carefully alternated.

2) Sequence of Columns: This photo shows the colour pattern that emphasizes the design we are creating. It is very important to also alternate the position of the sizes of clusters in between each row as shown in this photo. The second and third row have been started with the larger clusters (4xG120 to 9”). The second and fourth row have been started

4) Balloon Wall Panel: The columns are positioned closely together to create a solid Balloon Wall Panel.

6) Complimentary Balloon Column: We have completed the column by using D4 white 01 modelling balloons. The modelling balloons are and tied together, colourful A50 balloons have been attached to each end.

Materials Used: - 50x50cm metal bases with a 2mt aluminium poles - 50x50cm metal bases with a 1mt aluminium poles - Nylon thread - Gemar Latex Balloons: G90 and G120 for Balloon Wall Panel and G120, D4 and A50 for Complimentary Balloon Columns - Gemar Latex Balloon Colours used: white 01; yellow 02; orange 04; red 05; rose 06; light blue 09; green 13; lavender 49

The Orchid Gemar & Academy present the latest creation "The Orchid." The Masters of the Italian balloon will always provide creative ideas for the creation of unique compositions. On this occasion we have a centerpiece to be used in a context of a corporate party that takes place in a unique environment. The technique used is that of Fantasy Flowers, known to many, it allows us to customize and give a different accent centerpiece of any kind. In this case the composition will serve to decorate a table in an elegant and simple set in a typically tropical for a working lunch. To this composition were used G120 white balloons

and coordinated accessories. Indeed, the choice of color is dictated by the same colors used for the tablecloth and covered, trying not exceed too lit with colors. The final composition will be a decorative touch without too invade the character of elegance and importance of the occasion requires. Fabric shining sea and rocks, with their contrast are the contour to the composition lies on the table also gives the idea of a branch of orchids just harvested. Once again, our Master, Gabriele Del Cane, surprises us with a fast and simple technique to achieve a final result by offering extras.

Saint Valentine Heart

Gemar proudly presents a new creation “St. Valentine’s Heart”, St. Valentine’s day is a special occasion that is celebrated on February 14th all over the world for those in love.

114

The most characteristic detail of this occasion is the exchange of “Valentine’s”, notes of love that are often made in shape of hearts or representing romantic themes. This creation, through the use of balloons and the expertise of Masters of Accademia Dario Caminati, Claudio Casagrande and Gabriele Del Cane, highlights the symbol of romantic love “The Heart”. The heart sculpture is made by using Gemar Link Balloons™ GL6, round A50 balloons and curled up tulle fabric. The dimension of the heart is 1,5mt in both height and width. Nylon thread has been passed

through each side to anchor the sculpture to its base. The bottom base has been made by using 2 clusters of balloons, each cluster made up of 4 rose G110 balloons filled with about 1lt of water and 4 red A50 balloons. Meanwhile 2 screen printed G220’s have been positioned at the top end of each thread with A50 balloons as a finishing touch. The base enables the sculpture to remain in a straight position. The loved ones who receive “the Heart” as a gift will cut the thread to free their love, the balloons will fly towards the sky creating a rich emotional effect.

By using Gemar Link Balloons™ the sculpture is solid and can be built easily in short time. The sculpture will keep its form while flying towards the sky without using any metal frame. Gemar works continuously to experiment new techniques for the use of its balloons and cultivates the creativity of the Masters of Accademia that guarantee the quality and authentic design of the Italian balloons.

The Wedding Flower Tree ACCADEMIA del PALLONCINO ITALIANO

Gemar & Accademia proudly present their latest creation, “the Wedding Flower Tree”. A beautiful & elegant ornament for such a special occasion, a pair of these trees are perfect for decorating the entrance of the Hall in which the Wedding will take place. The realization of this décor has been accomplished by using a new product just developed by GEMAR, the “CR6” a small 6” heart shape balloon as well as other balloons such as AM50, GM90 and GM110 in both pastel & pearlescent shades. The technique used is quite simple and can be quickly assembled. The inspiration of this décor comes from the Italian “TOPAIA ART” frequently used for ornamenting gardens and which consists of cutting bush hedges into geometrical figures and shapes. The tree is composed by 3 spheres of different dimensions made with round latex balloons and enriched with beautiful roses made out of heart shaped latex balloons with the Fantasy Flower technique. The new CR6 has been conceived for decorating any ambient but is especially appropriate for Weddings as well as many other special occasions. In this issue we are showing a non conventional way of using a small heart shape balloon for décor, the possibilities of using latex balloons and “Balloon Art” techniques are endless, the only limit is your immagination…

TECHNICAL INFORMATION 50cm steel base 200cm aluminium pole Spheres: 12 Gemar pearlescent latex balloons in 3 different sizes: AM50, GM90, GM120 Vase: Gemar pearlescent latex balloons in 2 different sizes: AM50 and GM90 Roses: 9 heart shape balloons for each rose, CR6 for small roses and CR for large roses REALIZATION Pole Covering: We have convered the pole by using green modelling balloons wrapped around the total length of the pole, modelling balloons make this operation quick & easy Vase: For the vase we have used Gemar pearl 28 balloons in different sizes. Each row of balloons are inflated to different sizes and are tied together in groups of 6 (3 couples). The scheme used is the following (starting from the base): - 3 couples of GM90 (6 balloons) inflated to 5” - 3 couples of AM50 (6 balloons) inflated to 3” - 3 couples of AM50 (6 balloons) inflated to 3” - 3 couples of AM50 (6 balloons) inflated to 4” - 3 couples of GM90 (6 balloons) inflated to 5” - 3 couples of GM90 (6 balloons) inflated to 6” - 3 couples of GM90 (6 balloons) inflated to 7” 1st Sphere: The first and smallest sphere has been realized by using 12 AM50 balloons in pearlescent rose 33. The balloons have been inflated to a 4” size and have been tied in couples (2 balloons), special care has been taken to tie the balloons at the extreme end of the neck in order to make use of the total length of the neck in the arrangement. After being inflated they have to be tied between each other taking care that they are united in the centre 2nd Sphere: The second sphere has been realized by using 12 GM90 balloons in pearlescent rose 33. The balloons have been inflated to a 6” size and have been tied in couples (2 balloons), special care has been taken to tie the balloons at the extreme end of the neck in order to make use of the total length of the neck in the arrangement. After being inflated they have to be tied between each other taking care that they are united in the centre. 3rd Sphere: The third and largest sphere has been realized by using 12 GM110 balloons in pearlescent rose 33. The balloons have been inflated to a 8” size and have been tied in couples (2 balloons), special care has been taken to tie the balloons at the extreme end of the neck in order to make use of the total length of the neck in the arrangement. After being inflated they have to be tied between each other taking care that they are united in the centre. Roses: 2 sizes of heart shape balloons are required to make the roses. 9 Gemar heart shape latex balloons in pastel pink 57 have been used to make each rose, the lighter shade of pink has created a delicate contrast to enhance and emphasize the roses. The heart shapes are rolled in to create a rose as shown in the step by step guide on the following page. Useful Tips: To cover the steel pole quickly & easily inflate about 10cm of the modelling balloon and tie it on itself, hold the inflated part in your hand and cover the pole throughout its total length.

06. To create each sphere, tie 2 balloons by the extreme ends of their neck so the total length of the neck can be used in the arrangement. All balloons have been previously to the sizes indicated in our technical sheet. Gemar’s AM50, GM90 and GM110 balloons in pearlescent rose 33 have been used to make the spheres.

11. created, the smallest will be 30cm in diameter, the medium size will be 40cm in diameter and the largest will be 60cm in diameter

16. This operation must be repeated for all 9 balloon petals

02. Keep the D4 modelling balloon tight in one hand and to the pole. Cover the pole throughout its total length

07. Insert the second couple of balloons

12. Insert each sphere onto the steel pole

17. Unite the balloon petals together by using thin steel thread

03. Create the vase by the 2 couples of balloons to the pole (4 balloons)

08. Insert the third couple of balloons

13. Realize each rose with the heart shape balloons that have been previously prepared by cutting the rib. Each rose is made up of 9 Gemar heart shape balloons in pastel pink 57. The small roses have been made with new CR6

18. Fix the green fabric petals with green tape that should also cover the steel thread

04. Add the last couple of balloons in order to create the base of 6 balloons, take care that the balloons are positioned at the same distance from the centre of the pole

09. Take care that the balloons are held tightly at the centre while the balloons together

14. The balloon petal must be rolled on itself to create a rose bud

19. Real roses. By using CR6 and CR

05. Continue to build the vase from the bottom and up, each row of is made up of 6 balloons to the pole as shown in step 3 and 4. To the balloons to the correct sizes please check our technical sheet. Gemar’s AM50 and GM90 balloons in pearl 28 have been used to make the vase

10. Insert all the couples of balloons to obtain a sphere

15. The second balloon petal must be

01. Fix the green D4 modelling balloon to the pole

obtained

20. Finally insert each rose in between the balloons that compose each sphere. 20 roses are required to complete each sphere

Airplane Gemar, thanks to the creative cooperation with Masters of Accademia, is highly focused in realizing sculptures of great impact; in this issue we present the “Airplane” with an over all wing spread of more than 3 metres. Gemar & Accademia will be present at the 2009 Balloon Festival that will be held in Moscow on Ocotber 27th - 28th and for the first time this year in St. Petersburg on October 30th – 31st 2009. The Masters of Accademia will show many balloon decorations and will supply instructions, useful tips and technical support, you will be

surprised by the many news and in particular by the new Disney characters proposals. To realize our sculture we have to inflate 10 chains composed each of 16 Gemar Link Balloons™ (GL13 & GL6), the chains must be folded into quarters, couplets of A50 balloons should be inserted in order to create an open chain + a three-dimensional chain. After which we assemble all the three-dimensional chains by connecting them between each other. We then create the chains that will form the two wings and we insert an aluminium frame to connect them.

119

At this stage we tie the wings onto the frames and we can then start to create the propellers and the closure; we continue with the motors and the anchorages. We then proceed with the creation of 3 rows of balloons for the tail wing, we insert the end wing with a A50 balloons. We continue with the creation of the front closure, we connect the motor with a joint and the propellers to the motor.

To finish we just make the wheels and connect to the plane. Our “Airplane is finished with a great visual impact and with a wingspread that reaches over 3 metres.
