January Update

As we approach the close of another year at Ventana Canyon, I want to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve accomplished together in 2024 and express my gratitude for your ongoing support and enthusiasm. As we celebrated our 40th anniversary this year we had the opportunity to reflect on our history and look ahead to our next chapter and it’s all thanks to you – our dedicated members – who make Ventana Canyon such a special place. Our 40th-anniversary celebrations throughout the year brought our community together in meaningful ways and created memories that will be cherished for years to come. Thank you for being part of these moments beginning with our Toast to the Trailblazers event in January and ending with our 1984 Golf Tournament celebrating the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Mountain Course. It was our privilege to share a heartfelt video message from Tom Fazio, which you can now find on the Golf page of our member website. The video is a fitting tribute to the legacy of our Club as we look forward to the next forty years.

This year also marked the completion of the long-anticipated irrigation project on the Canyon Golf Course. This essential improvement not only enhances the playability and aesthetics of the course but also underscores our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. This project was not without its challenges and inconveniences to members, but we are happy to celebrate its completion. We are also excited about the support you’ve shown for the expanded utilization of the Catalina Dining Room and Sabino Room for members seven nights a week. Your engagement and enthusiasm are breathing new life into these spaces, and it has been wonderful to see them become vibrant hubs of connection and enjoyment.

Looking ahead, 2025 promises to be another exciting year filled with enhancements designed to continue elevating your experience at Ventana Canyon. We are pleased to embark on our plans for the expansion of our Fitness Center and for improvements to the Catalina Dining Room and Sabino Room. These projects are slated for completion over the summer and are part of our ongoing commitment to providing exceptional amenities and services. I look forward to sharing more details with you next month as these plans progress.

We also had successes in 2024. One of the standout highlights was our recent designation as a Distinguished Golf Destination by BoardRoom magazine, in partnership with Forbes Travel Guide. This recognition is a testament to the exceptional quality of our golf facilities, the dedication of our team, and the unique experience we offer here at Ventana Canyon. Earlier this year we also celebrated our new partnership with Preferred Hotels and Resorts. We are proud to be the only destination in Southern Arizona to receive both of these honors, distinctions that elevate our reputation in the world of premier golf and hospitality.

As we wrap up, I want to extend my sincere thanks to each of you. Your passion for Ventana Canyon and your continued support inspire us to strive for excellence in everything we do. I am grateful for the sense of community within our membership, and I am honored to serve as your CEO and General Manager. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season and a prosperous New Year. Here’s to an outstanding 2025 filled with new achievements and shared successes.

“One of the things that I love about living in Ventana is the sense of community - and the club is an important part of that. Becoming an Alliance member will provide an opportunity for me to meet people beyond my neighbors and racquet pals, to participate in how Ventana operates. I’m looking forward to helping guide and shape the future of Ventana!”

Board of Governors Update

MOLLY DRYBROUGH

Board of Governors

This month I’d like to focus on racquet sports and introduce you to the racquet committee. The racquet committee is comprised of 12 members: Barry Thall, Platt Hubbell (Hubb), Jennifer Tretheway (our representative from the Board of Managers), Clayton Robideau (V.P. and Clubhouse Manager), Brian Branscome (Pickleball Pro), Linda Fountain, Tom Thayer, Jonas Ehrlin (Director of Racquet Sports), Rob Macmillan, Tim McNearney, Terry Lee, and Molly Drybrough (Chair of Racquets Committee).

We meet once a month, and our primary job is to:

Work with and advise the racquet professionals about events and various programs

Plan events that will appeal to members that also may be used to showcase our club to attract interest beyond the current membership

Work with the Club’s management regarding the upkeep, maintenance, and appearance of the Racquet facilities

Modify rules and regulations as needed

Assist in other areas that may be referred to the Committee by either the Board of Governors or the Board of Managers

Tennis, pickleball, and spec tennis are busy at the club, and our pros are working hard to offer events for both experienced players and beginners. These include:

Open pickleball play every Saturday from 9-11 a.m. for intermediate players. Pickleball clinics on Tuesdays for intermediate and beginning players.

Thursday evening socials for all racquet sports, once each month.

Spec Tennis drop-in play every Tuesday from 9:30-11:30 for all levels of play.

Two Saturday mornings every month, Jonas hosts drop-in play for Tennis Club Doubles, which includes some free instruction for all attendees.

In addition, there are tennis clinics for juniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:30.

Check the racquet calendar for details or contact Brian or Jonas for more information. We now publish a racquet sports newsletter twice a month to keep you updated on events, sent on the 1st and 15th. To join the email list, contact Melissa Smith at mdsmith@ventanacanyonclub.com.

Courts are in high demand during peak season, so we recommend booking in advance. Reservations (one court per person) can be made one week before your desired time. If you can’t play, please cancel as soon as possible via the app or by calling the shop. Guests are welcome for a $10 fee, with limits on how often they can play. Please register guests at the racquets desk and contact staff with any questions.

The club continues its wellness focus in all member activities. Remember to stretch and hydrate before playing to prevent injuries and keep enjoying the sports we love. See you on the courts!

Celebrating the Citrus Season

As we turn the corner on the holiday season and begin a new year of zesty adventures, the kitchen crew is embracing the bright, bold, tangy, and sweet flavors of peak citrus season. Whether you’re starting your morning off with a Sunday brunch mimosa or capping off the evening with our Orange Polenta Cake, we welcome you to squeeze a little extra joy into your day and start January with a splash of flavor.

A Short Attention Span History of Citrus in Arizona

Indigenous to the Asian tropics, citrus fruits made their way to our region around 1700, brought by Spanish missionaries who realized that our climate would be hospitable to these frost-sensitive, heatloving cultivars. By the late 19th century, some 1000 acres of citrus had been cultivated in Arizona Territory. By the 1920s and 1930s, citrus had become a leading cash crop and one of the 5 Cs that anchored the Arizona economy: Copper, Cattle, Cotton, Climate, and Citrus. Several street names in Northwest Tucson bear witness to that heritage - Tangerine Road, Orange Grove, Naranja, et al. are the legacy of Arizona’s being one of only five states growing citrus on a commercial scale.

A Winter Delight: Citrus on the Menu

Citrus fruits are at their best this time of year, offering an incredible range of flavors that invigorate the palate. Whether taking a starring role as in our fennel, jicama, and citrus salad or providing a complementary grace note like the orange suprêmes cutting through the rich and hearty flavors of our feijoada, citrus offers great culinary versatility and its balance of sweetness and acidity can truly elevate a dish.

Simple Citrus Recipe

Fennel Jicama Apple Citrus Salad

Ingredients:

Serves 4 ample portions

1 Cup fennel, shaved very thinly

1 Cup jicama, peeled & cut into julienne (⅛” x ⅛” x

3” matchsticks)

1 Cup julienne Granny Smith apple

½ Cup julienne red onion

½ Cup orange suprêmes and their juice

(suprêmes are segments with the peel and white pith removed)

½ Cup grapefruit suprêmes and their juice

½ Cup Mandarin suprêmes and their juice

1 Cup chiffonade (very finely sliced) fresh mint

Combine all ingredients and toss.

Supporting a Citrus Cause: Iskashitaa Refugee Network

In addition to celebrating citrus on our plates, we’re taking a moment to recognize the broader impact of these fruits in our community.

Here in Tucson, the Iskashitaa Refugee Network is doing incredible work by harvesting surplus citrus and other produce from backyards and public spaces. This not-for-profit organization combats food waste, addresses food insecurity, and fosters a sense of belonging by integrating refugees into the local food economy.

Through their efforts, Iskashitaa not only saves thousands of pounds of produce from going to waste each year but also creates opportunities for skill-building and cultural exchange. Many of the citrus fruits they harvest are redistributed to families in need, ensuring that everyone has access to fresh, nutritious food. It’s a reminder of how something as simple as a backyard lemon tree can contribute to a larger cycle of sustainability and care.

We encourage our members to learn more about Iskashitaa and consider how you might support their mission, whether through donations, volunteering, or sharing your citrus harvest. If you happen to have citrus (or other fruit-bearing plants) on your property that produce more than you can use, call Iskashitaa (520-440-0100 or Information@iskashitaa.org) and they will harvest and get that food to those who need it and even sell excess to some of your favorite local eateries to help fund Iskashitaa’s activities in the community.

Together, we can ensure that these fruits are not only savored on our plates but also serve as a source of community connection.

A Bright Start to the Year

As we welcome the new year, let’s celebrate the flavors and possibilities that citrus season brings. Whether you’re enjoying a citrus-infused dish at the club or creating your own culinary masterpiece at home, take a moment to savor the brightness of this winter treasure. Here’s to a zesty start to 2025!

Ventana Canyon Swim Club

Happy New Year from the east side of the Club!

After our winter break, the Ventana Canyon Green Wave swim team is back in action! But before I go any further, I wanted to let you know how great the team swam at our mid-season championship meet in Oro Valley. Our team finished 9th out of dozens of teams from the states of Arizona, California, and Oregon with a fraction of the athletes as some of the bigger club teams! It is safe to say pound-for-pound Ventana Canyon was the best team by a long shot!

Now, as we ring in the New Year, we prepare for the 2nd half of the season with our next meet in Sahuarita on Saturday, January 11. We are a little over 2 months away from concluding our season depending on the athlete, so we are excited about what's in store for the team in 2025!

Of course, it is never too late to join the swim team even if you want to have your child get acclimated a couple times a week so that they can get a head start on the summer season because it is approaching fast! We offer monthly tuition rates so there is no long-term commitment to join the team! Please note, that the team will be taking Martin Luther King Jr. Day off in observance of the federal holiday.

Our master's program is in full swing as well. All members are welcome to join! If you are interested in joining or just want more information, please contact Coach Molly or myself at: sbusch@ventanacanyonclub.com

And as always, for more information, visit our team website!

Coaches tip: Try mixing in new pieces of equipment. There is a stark contrast between 'scuba' snorkels and fins and 'competitive' snorkels and fins. Please be sure to always use the latter in the lap pool to promote better balance and reduce body fatigue in the water.

One final thought, our team continues to grow each and every month and it is so humbling to see all the energy and support around the pool from members from all walks of the Club! Thank you so much for your support and please feel free to continue to spread the word about the Ventana Canyon Green Wave Swim Team!

See you poolside!

Sustainability Update for January

Butterfly Test Garden

As part of the sustainability effort at the Club, a Butterfly Test Garden was established in October 2023. The goal of the test garden was to identify native plants that require less water while producing blooms or seeds that attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators.

After one year, the results are in and may be obtained by emailing Christine (cbaker@ventanacanyonclub.com). Plants most successful in sun to part shade with some irrigation are identified by genus and species. The results provide the opportunity for homeowners to implement changes in their gardens incorporating these plants.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service just announced that Monarch Butterflies are being added to the "Threatened Species" list. Consequently, Ventana will be helping to grow the Monarch population as we add pollinator plants to our gardens.

A New Honor of Distinction for Ventana Canyon

We are thrilled to announce that Ventana Canyon Club and Lodge has been named a Distinguished Golf Destination—an honor reserved for only the most exceptional golf experiences around the world. This prestigious recognition, awarded by BoardRoom magazine in partnership with Forbes Travel Guide, reflects our unwavering commitment to excellence in service, amenities, and the overallgolfexperience.

Developed by industry leaders, BoardRoom magazine and Forbes Travel Guide, the Distinguished Golf Destination designation is the most prestigious and valuable accolade a resort, semi-private, daily fee, or public golf course can achieve. This merit-based program recognizes exceptional golf courses that exceed expectations in quality of service, amenities, facilities, and most importantly, the teamwork of the staff and management. Unlike popularitydriven awards, Distinguished Golf Destination status is earned through a rigorous process that evaluates every aspect of a property’s facilities, course(s), andoperationsagainstthemostimportantmeasure:TheGolfExperience.

This milestone solidifies our status as one of the premier golf destinations in the world—a place where members and guests can enjoy world-class play in a settingdefinedbynaturalbeautyandfirst-classservice.

Golf Course Update

At first glance, you may think Santa has been playing golf.

Unfortunately, Santa will not be visiting this person’s house as their golf etiquette was not up to par. Please knock the sand off your shoes after you have been in the bunkers. No one wants to putt through these footprints.

Speaking of bunkers…. please spend a little extra time to ensure you have properly raked your footprints in the bunkers. Having to play from a bunker is bad enough then add to the situation of someone who does not rake their mess, only adds to the frustration. Golf can be frustrating enough so let’s not add to the game’s frustration level.

Rainfall as of 12/9/24 is at 15.01” which is pretty close to our annual average. Frost delays are currently at 9 as of 12/9/24.

Enjoy the holidays with family and friends. If you improve your bunker etiquette you may get on Santa’s nice list.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 520-577-4013 or ventanacanyon1@qwestoffice.net

Swing hard in case you hit it.

WGA Rules School a Huge Success

One of the standout events this month was the WGA Rules School, which received rave reviews from participants. The school offered a comprehensive look at golf rules, ensuring players of all skill levels could fine-tune their knowledge of the game. It was a valuable learning opportunity, helping participants better understand the intricate regulations that govern play. The WGA’s commitment to education and improving the game for its members was clearly evident, and everyone walked away with new insights to apply on the course.

In addition to the Rules School, the WGA hosted a One-Day Guest Day, a special event with a "Caddyshack" theme where members were invited to bring guests for a day of golf. The day was a resounding success with 64 participants, providing a fantastic opportunity for newcomers to experience the camaraderie and competition of the WGA. Congratulations to the winners of the event, who showcased their impressive skills and made the most of this fun-filled day.

The evening ended on a high note, with great food and even better company, making it a memorable event for all who participated.

To mark the occasion, the course hosted a tournament with 96 participants, who enjoyed a day of competitive play in honor of this landmark anniversary. After the tournament, a celebratory dinner and awards ceremony took place, where winners were recognized for their outstanding performances. The event was a fitting tribute to four decades of golfing excellence at the Mountain Golf Course.

Los Amigos de Plata Event

This event was another highlight, where the top golfers battled it out for the coveted silver jackets. Over the two days of intense competition, players demonstrated incredible skill and determination. The “Quick Fix” is not the Anwser

Recently, I spoke with a player about their game. They were struggling and, after some back-and-forth, said that for now, they just wanted a “quick fix.”

I understand where they were coming from - when things go “off the rails” the idea of a simple, immediate solution feels reassuring. It’s human nature to want a fast way out of discomfort. But the quick-fix approach in golf is like trying to patch a leaking roof with duct tape - it might stop the water for a day or two, but sooner or later, the roof will leak again. In The Fifth Discipline, author Peter Senge calls this phenomenon the “fix that fails,” describing how short-term solutions seem helpful but ultimately make the original problem harder to solve. Golfers fall into this trap all the time.

A quick set-up adjustment or swing tip may temporarily ease the frustration, but without addressing the root cause, those band-aid solutions lead to deeper pain, greater setbacks, and mounting frustration. When we rely on a quick fix several things happen:

Bad Habits Multiply: Imagine fixing a slice by closing your clubface—without addressing the real issue. You might hit straighter for a while, but you’re reinforcing poor fundamentals. Eventually, those habits will limit your game and make progress harder.

Confidence Erodes: Each failed quick fix takes a mental toll. When a temporary solution inevitably falls apart, it can feel like you are the problem rather than the approach.

Frustration Builds: A cycle of temporary solutions leads to greater challenges, not fewer. Over time, small frustrations stack up, turning into larger roadblocks.

Time Is Wasted: Ironically, the more players chase a quick fix, the more time they lose. Each new tip or adjustment may provide brief relief, but it delays the real work needed for sustainable improvement.

I understand the appeal of quick fixes—they offer immediate action. But they only postpone the problem, adding to the frustration. To truly improve your game, you must move beyond quick fixes and commit to a deliberate, structured path to improvement which may take time and could feel worse before it gets better.

If you commit to the process and stop chasing short-term fixes in favor of long-term improvement addressing the root cause, you will start seeing real, lasting progress.

If you need help with your game – especially your putting and short game, let’s talk. It’s not an impossible mission, just one that takes commitment and a plan.

Golf is about getting the ball in the hole in the fewest strokes. Or is it?

Isn’t playing golf more about an experience? More about being out on a beautiful golf course actively pursuing your best game? Isn’t golf more about connecting with people, being in nature, and generally living your best life?

As you know your inner world can easily affect your outer world experience. Is your inner world full of stress on the golf course? Do you have unrealistically high expectations or are you there to do your best and enjoy those you are playing with? What is your intention for your time on the golf course?

In your outer world, is your ball not obeying what you tell it to do? Is there frustration and disappointment during your time out on the golf course? Are you playing golf with clenched teeth or a relaxed and fluid motion? Stress creates tight muscles which is never an asset when making a golf stroke. Learning how to relax and enjoy your time on the course may all start with your choice and discipline to simply keep a smile on your face.

It all starts with smiling! What? Yes, smiling. When you smile your brain does not know if the smile is real or fake…it just knows that you are smiling.

When you smile, molecules are released from your brain called neuropeptides that help fight off stress. Your brain releases a cascade of feel-good neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins. These chemicals work together to reduce stress levels, alleviate pain, and create a sense of well-being. Now wouldn’t that be a joy to play in that environment?

If you have an authentic smile that is hooked to your emotional system then of course there are more endorphins released and more of a response. Nevertheless, when you smile or laugh, it feels good. It doesn’t matter if you start laughing first then smile or smile first then start laughing. The chemical releases in your body help you to see things in a positive light. Negativity drags you down but smiling lifts not only you but all those around you.

Just try it and see how people react to you…you can light up the room or even better, you can light up the golf course…..no matter where your ball happens to be!

8 Reasons To Get MOVING Today

In 2018 the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans advised adults to do at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise like brisk walking, cycling, or dancing as well as recommending strength exercises at least twice a week. Most of us aren’t hitting those targets. We may find ourselves saying that we will find a routine after the holidays or when work calms down, but our bodies are not frozen in time while we’re not exercising. We are paying a price.

1. Exercise may help keep the brain sharp. Both gray matter(neurons) and white matter(improves how well the neurons communicate with each other) benefit from physical activity. The most consistent benefits of exercise are memory, attention, and the ability to perform multiple tasks at once.

Health & Wellness Tips

8 Reasons To Get MOVING Today (continued)

2. Exercise lowers your risk of Type 2 diabetes. Exercise makes your body more sensitive to insulin. The more sensitive your tissues are to insulin the more quickly sugar is removed from blood. Insulin sensitivity is important for lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes. Studies have shown that a single bout of exercise improves insulin sensitivity for at least a day. You don't have to do months of training before you see any improvement.

3. Exercising more (and sitting less) is linked to a lower risk of heart disease. Exercise can lower blood pressure, blood sugar, and other risk factors for heart disease. It also keeps the blood vessels supple. Sitting more than 8 to 9 hours a day increases your risk of heart disease, so try to get up and walk around at least every hour. The longer you sit the more exercise you will need to negate the health effects. Attempt to put moderate to vigorous activity in your daily routine.

4. Exercise can boost mental health. A commitment to regular exercise has been shown to benefit mental health, like anxiety and depression. An acute bout of exercise has immediate benefits for shortterm feelings of anxiety and depression.

5. High levels of physical activity are linked to a lower risk of colon and breast cancer. But exercise may keep other cancers at bay. Research has shown that high levels of physical activity are linked to a lower risk of endometrial, kidney, bladder, and stomach cancers. Higher levels of inflammation, insulin, and blood sugar are linked to an increased risk of some cancers. Physical activity may help keep a lid on each. Physical activity contributes to a lower risk of cancer by preventing long-term weight gain which is linked to a higher risk of many cancers.

6. Not Exercising yet? YOU can build muscle at any age. As we age we all lose muscle. We peak around 30, after 40 you can expect both your muscle mass and your strength to start to fall, and you will see larger drops after age 70. As you lose muscle you lose strength, and that will make it harder over time to engage in basic activities. The good news is that there is no age at which you cannot build muscle. You have not missed the window of opportunity to build your strength.

7. Even small amounts of physical activity are linked to living longer. The World Health Organization says that physical inactivity is the 4th leading cause of death around the world. Even just a little movement daily reduces your risk of diseases caused by inactivity. Less sitting and more activity can lower your risk of dying early.

8. Struggling to get some sleep? Don’t just sit there! Exercise leads to more sleep and better sleep, and it reduces the number of times that people wake up during the night. And there is no wait, go on a hike, walk, or bike ride and you will likely sleep a little more soundly.
