Celui qui a vu les travaux actuels d’Yves Zurstrassen en original et dans les conditions d’éclairage idéales de son atelier bruxellois est impressionné par leur fraîcheur et leur resplendissante présence dans l’espace. Dès les premiers moments d’une telle rencontre – les considérations d’histoire de l’art étant reléguées au second plan au bénéfice de la perception immédiate –, les premières émotions se font sentir, émotions dont la qualité décide souvent de la suite et de l’intensité d’une possible approche.

C’est ainsi que s’instaura, lors d’une récente visite à l’atelier, une profonde confiance en la capacité de représenter des situations complexes universelles ; des grands formats paraissant au repos semblaient chargés d’une assurance sensuelle et dégageaient une profonde vitalité. L’interaction entre le miroitement des pigments, au chromatisme souvent méditerranéen, et les innombrables idiomes picturaux communiquant les uns avec les autres générait un mouvement inhérent à l’œuvre qui bouleversait les paradigmes et les schémas traditionnels et faisait ainsi valser les relations établies. Semblables réactions se manifestent d’ordinaire plutôt rarement dans la fréquentation de l’art abstrait et témoignaient qu’une bonne dose de contemporanéité avait été administrée ici aux conventions de l’art non figuratif, contemporanéité dont il fallait encore explorer la nature intellectuelle et matérielle. À cela se mêlait le sentiment d’être tombé par hasard, au cœur de Bruxelles, situé au point de frictions parfois problématiques entre les mentalités francophones et flamandes, sur un lieu où règnent des énergies très différentes, plutôt d’inspiration new-yorkaise, ayant donné naissance à cette fameuse contemporanéité, constituant ce réservoir labyrinthique de références où Yves Zurstrassen puise avec assurance pour son travail. Dans cette mesure, la polyphonie visuelle donnée à voir correspondait tout à fait à la synthèse de réalités qui se réalisait ici. Il y avait donc une absolue nécessité à l’examiner pour trouver le fil conducteur permettant d’accéder à ce labyrinthe.

Aux coups d’œil suivants ces références s’éclairent, ainsi que pendant les conversations, révélant un artiste à l’esprit vif, parfaitement informé, qui possède les diverses tendances de l’abstraction, des modernes jusqu’à la période contemporaine, et s’inscrit délibérément dans le discours postmoderne de la déconstruction et du décollage.

Ainsi, au cours de l’élaboration de son œuvre, Yves Zurstrassen a développé diverses affinités, avec le geste des informels notamment, avec la surcharge ornementale et l’introduction de motifs appartenant à la culture de masse dans la mouvance du pattern painting également, sans toutefois les figer dans une “signature” répétitive et commerciale.

Au contraire, son œuvre foisonnante se distingue par une grande franchise et de rapides changements de perspectives. Les ruptures et les fractures structurent ces circonvolutions, sous-tendues par ce savoir propre à l’ère des médias, qui sait que rien

ne saurait revendiquer une éternelle validité et que les aspirations à l’autonomie et à l’absolu des abstraits classiques de la période moderne ne peuvent être qu’anachroniques dans les conditions actuelles. Dans cette mesure, Yves Zurstrassen est également à l’opposé des projets “héroïques” des pionniers, de Vassili Kandinsky et Kasimir Malevitch à Piet Mondrian, ainsi que des géants de l’après-guerre, Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt ou Mark Rothko, tout en gardant une distance pleine de respect mais néanmoins infranchissable.

Ce sont les stratégies plurielles de l’abstraction contemporaine qui l’intéressent et sur lesquelles il se concentre pendant d’amples phases de travail. Pourtant, il reste toujours très conscient des multiples ramifications de ses racines européennes et insiste à maintes reprises sur la continuité d’une tradition picturale qui, finalement, s’est avérée plus forte que toutes les condamnations de l’avant-garde, dans le sillage de Marcel Duchamp et de Marcel Broodthaers. La vitalité de la résistance de la peinture n’a jamais cessé de fasciner Yves Zurstrassen.

Puis, d’autres noms émergent de ce flot de grands inspirateurs et pourvoyeurs d’impulsions : Gerhard Richter, bien sûr, mais aussi Jacques Villeglé, Emilio Vedova…

Nous abordons aussi, dans ce contexte, le facteur de simultanéité, qui désigne le fait que divers artistes travaillent au même moment sur des problématiques apparentées mais ne prennent connaissance de leurs travaux réciproques que bien plus tard, chacun développant de façon originale son propre langage formel, les références communes n’apparaissant en pleine lumière qu’avec la distance générationnelle.

Trois autres noms d’artistes surgissent, tous trois appartenant à la génération d’Yves Zurstrassen et vivant à New York : d’une part, Jonathan Lasker, dont les travaux paradigmatiques sont l’illustration parfaite des modes de représentation non figurative en même temps qu’ils accordent une importance particulière à la lutte interne entre présentation et représentation, entre les textures picturales et graphiques, entre l’hermétisme inhérent au tableau et la transparence au monde. D’autre part, Philip Taaffe et sa contribution essentielle à la réhabilitation de l’ornement dans l’art, en tant qu’“universel culturel”, dont les strates picturales au chromatisme intense créent un espace efficace pour les références historiques et sociales des signes qu’il adopte.

Et, pour finir, Christopher Wool, dont les travaux, où alternent des applications en aplat, des superpositions successives, une spontanéité gestuelle et un calcul imprégné d’ironie, produisent un effet fascinant. Trois attitudes artistiques avec lesquelles Yves Zurstrassen ressent depuis longtemps une certaine parenté. Il reconnaît la nécessité de tenir compte de ces points communs et de cette nouvelle peinture abstraite qui revendique l’intégration d’aspects du quotidien, de la société de consommation et de la culture médiatique comme autant de générateurs de formes et cherche à refléter la réalité sociale par le biais de l’art. Toutefois, il serait très souhaitable d’avoir des interfaces avec cette réalité. On ne saurait continuer de réagir à cette relation tendue entre existence et transcendance selon les canons traditionnels de l’abstraction, en favorisant le détachement du monde, la réduction à l’essentiel et l’ascèse. Au contraire, il faudrait une abstraction programmatiquement ouverte à la vie. Une telle abstraction mêle les paradigmes, perturbe les ambitions puristes et ne craint pas les motifs, ornements et arabesques. Elle tend, en somme, vers le chaos de la vie.

Si l’on considère les œuvres plus récentes en tenant compte de ces prémices, on constate qu’elles se conforment systématiquement à ce programme, ou, mieux encore, qu’elles le concrétisent par éruptions hybrides. À titre d’exemple, nous prendrons un travail dont le titre indique sa date de réalisation – un procédé qu’Yves Zurstrassen pratique depuis longtemps et qui souligne que toute association thématique ou narrative propre à mettre l’accent sur une temporalité très concrète est caduque. Un format figure très équilibré, le 090415, se présente d’abord au spectateur comme une surface plusieurs fois vitrifiée où subsistent et coexistent des traces d’élans gestuels et de décollages de motifs à trous qui génèrent de fortes tensions. L’effet majeur provient de l’extrême intensité des couleurs, du rouge et du jaune qui évoquent une incandescence, un flamboiement de la surface et intègrent toutes les formes en suspens dans un courant thermique vertical. Le second aspect qui saute aux yeux est la complexité des nombreuses couches picturales : au moyen d’un procédé complexe mêlant entrelacs de peinture et insertion d’ornements ensuite enlevés, Zurstrassen obtient des stratifications matérielles et mentales pouvant être considérées comme des palimpsestes du présent.

Les applications les plus récentes recouvrent l’existant en le réécrivant, les motifs dévoilés donnent à voir des points de vue vers des plans en profondeur.

Il importe alors de savoir qu’avec sa pratique du décollage, Yves Zurstrassen ne peut parvenir à cette complexité de l’organisme pictural en devenir en recourant à des constructions successives, mais qu’il doit pratiquement opérer en partant d’un résultat dont il a l’intuition. Grâce à l’application de motifs et ornements au début du processus, puis à leur recouvrement couche par couche, le moment où ceux-ci sont soigneusement détachés à la pincette recèle une certaine dose de surprise et d’imprévisible et a fonction de contrepoint dans un dispositif d’ensemble conceptuel. C’est de cette manière que se renouvelle sans cesse cet état productif à mi-chemin entre l’intuition et la conceptualisation ; un état, du reste, que savaient provoquer les pionniers du décollage d’affiches, tels que Mimmo Rotella et Raymond Hains – des artistes qu’Yves Zurstrassen apprécie beaucoup – quand ils rompaient la continuité bien lisse des messages affichés en mettant à jour les couches précédentes par arrachage. Mais, contrairement à ces derniers, leur successeur utilise des motifs et modèles qui empiètent sur la totalité d’un fond ornemental, il a recours à des formes à connotations islamiques tout comme à des séries géométriques, florales ou ponctuées. inépuisable est encore élargi par le biais d’un travail informatique : des alignements en diagonale, d’infinis effets de miroir sont imprimés, tels des motifs, sur du papier fin avant d’entrer en contact avec la toile, avant que commence le véritable acte de peinture. C’est ainsi que naissent des structures d’une extrême complexité dont les lisières colorées aux arêtes marquées révèlent les étapes de la réalisation, des structures d’un langage formel hybride qui ne reconnaît toutefois aucune hiérarchie au sens d’un premier et d’un arrière-plan, ni suprématie ni subordination. Au contraire, et comme dans 09 04 15, on a l’impression d’une simultanéité omniprésente, flux concomitant de particules de sens et de signifiants dans l’espace et le temps qui semble correspondre aux pratiques de mobilité et de mise en réseau des urbanistes du monde occidental, qui a peut-être prédominé pendant la durée de réalisation de cette œuvre. Car ce n’est pas un hasard si le courant thermique de couleurs, évoqué précédemment, associe un état d’extase et d’éruption créative propre aux moments de libres prises de responsabilité inhérents à l’acte de peindre. Dans cette mesure, ce tableau permet un regard sans entraves dans le laboratoire intime d’Yves Zurstrassen et sur les éblouissantes opérations de l’imaginaire.

De même, le travail intitulé 09 03 04, aisément identifiable comme appartenant également à la production récente, livre une impressionnante démonstration de la tension entre le traitement gestuel de la surface et les applications d’ornements constitutifs du tableau, même si elle est discrète et presque lyrique. Le contraste rouge/vert dominant se déploie avec subtilité pour donner des tonalités turquoise méditerranéennes et des champs de mauves. Les motifs à mailles serrées rappellent les reflets de lumière sur les coupoles et les moucharabiehs de l’architecture mauresque, des cercles et ovales en suspension suggèrent des variantes de fleurs, animaux marins et fougères. Des réminiscences de jardins et d’oasis structurent la perception du spectateur et font surgir de sa mémoire picturale les paradis poétiques de Klee ainsi que les lumineux intérieurs de Matisse. Yves Zurstrassen, qui profite longuement des possibilités de peindre en Andalousie et en Provence pendant les mois d’été, est un familier averti des références évoquées ici, qu’il a intériorisées. Cette influence méridionale, due d’une part aux ramifications familiales et d’autre part à des affinités électives conscientes, constitue manifestement un pendant nécessaire à son intérêt pour la scène new-yorkaise et confère aux travaux actuels la fraîcheur et la vitalité évoquées précédemment. Dans cette mesure, il semble que dans ses œuvres récentes Yves Zurstrassen réunit sans peine les influences les plus diverses et dispose d’un vocabulaire plastique qui se distingue au sens littéral comme au sens figuré par un aspect polyglotte dont le but est de synthétiser consciemment le monde.

Normalement, aucun artiste ne pourrait disposer dès le début d’un arsenal d’instruments d’une telle ampleur, mais devrait d’abord le constituer et l’élaborer pas à pas. Sans revenir ici dans le détail sur toutes les césures du chemin parcouru, deux périodes méritent d’être évoquées, phases au cours desquelles Zurstrassen entreprit d’importantes recherches plastiques qui, vues sous l’angle actuel, possédaient d’une certaine manière un caractère initiatique. La première, qui dura des années 1990 au début du nouveau millénaire, était marquée par la dominance de fonds sombres, dont le spectre s’étendait d’un noir saturé à des zones lumineuses et contrastées n’autorisant toutefois qu’une extrême économie de la couleur. Une aura de sérieux et un caractère profondément contemplatif entouraient ces travaux qui, de loin, évoquaient un mémento mori de la peinture baroque espagnole et rendaient hommage à des œuvres plus récentes, celles d’Antoni Tàpies et de Pierre Soulages. Pourtant, même pendant cette période, la tension plastique immanente était d’ores et déjà générée par la confrontation entre divers programmes mis en exergue grâce à leurs différences réciproques, sans que l’artiste vise à une harmonisation ou à une subordination.

À titre d’exemple, citons un travail intitulé Ouverture #1, de 2001 : un grand format, paysage sombre dont la surface porte l’empreinte des inscriptions et mises à nu de concepts divergents. Des gestes d’une dynamique informelle dus au graphisme du trait rencontrent des surfaces picturales changeantes. Des formes rondes et organiques, comme déchirées à la main dans le papier, puis collées et de nouveau détachées, s’opposent aux limites du rectangle. Un noir opaque est perforé sur des fonds gris ; la composition s’oppose au chaos. Pendant cette période, c’est entre des polarités de ce genre qu’évoluait un langage pictural qui, avec le recul, peut paraître sincère, mais insuffisamment innovant. Ce déficit se fit manifestement sentir un jour ; commença alors une phase d’expérimentation au moyen de papiers de couleurs vives, dans l’esprit d’une recherche fondamentale plastique, qui couvraient désormais les toiles par alignements sériels, les superpositions et les échelonnements suggérant l’espace.

Toutefois, les paradigmes en présence – de l’art concret et de l’Op Art – étaient soumis à une révision subjective et assimilés de façon productive : effets psychologiques dus à la perception des couleurs et des formes, rapports complémentaires et antagonistes, pondération visuelle et position dans le format. Désormais, le regard de l’artiste s’appropriait d’autres artistes tels que Max Bill et Bridget Riley. Tout ce qui pouvait s’exprimer avec des moyens élémentaires et non figuratifs constituait dès lors le thème de travail. L’œuvre intitulée 03 09 16, de 2003, illustre bien ce point de vue : un format carré de deux mètres de côté contient d’innombrables structures hautes en couleur qui génèrent neuf clusters géométriques, chacun formé de deux couches constituées

de quatre carrés. Ces structures recadrent les espaces entre rectangles et carrés, les couleurs semblent décliner tout le spectre des contrastes : complémentarité, intensité, simultanéité et succession. Grâce à la répartition équilibrée des éléments sur la surface, il règne une grande stabilité de l’ensemble malgré les tensions internes ; une balance subtile entre ordre et anarchie, entre conformité et résistance s’opère ici à un niveau exemplaire et étend inopinément un jeu formel et sans objet aux domaines de l’analogie sociale. Vues sous cet angle, les explorations apparemment formelles de cette période ne sont jamais restées au niveau de la réflexion autocentrée, mais recherchaient – quelle que soit l’impression donnée – des voies vers une abstraction contemporaine capable de saisir la complexité en même temps que la désorientation, propres au sentiment vital prédominant.

Aujourd’hui, quand Yves Zurstrassen laisse glisser son regard sur les châssis soigneusement rangés dans son vaste atelier, sur les pots de peinture, pinceaux, modèles de motifs et autres outils et se remet chaque jour à l’ouvrage, il n’a pas plus de solution toute prête, valable pour tous les problèmes artistiques et vitaux, que dans le passé.

Mais il a néanmoins acquis l’expérience artistique, la force et la certitude de disposer d’un arsenal plastique très étendu et de savoir l’utiliser en fonction des exigences et situations. En usant du décollage de motifs et ornements, il a exploité des domaines de réalité inaccessibles à l’abstraction traditionnelle. Grâce à une combinatoire virtuose de programmes picturaux gestuels et géométriques, expressifs et conceptuels, il a acquis une flexibilité dynamique avec laquelle le monde peut encore être représenté. Restant dans une proximité intellectuelle avec d’autres artistes, il a contribué à ce regain de contemporanéité d’une abstraction qui, pour citer Jonathan Lasker, s’ouvre désormais “aux textures de la vie”.

Wer die aktuellen Arbeiten von Yves Zurstrassen im Original und noch dazu unter den idealen Lichtverhältnissen seines Ateliers in Brüssel gesehen hat, ist beeindruckt von ihrer Frische und der geradezu strahlenden Präsenz im Raum. In den ersten Momenten einer solchen Begegnung, da die kunsthistorische Reflexion zu Gunsten einer unmittelbaren Wahrnehmung zurücktritt, zeichnen sich primäre Empfindungen ab, deren Ausrichtung nicht selten über den weiteren Fortgang sowie die Intensität einer möglichen Annäherung entscheidet. So stellte sich denn bei einem jüngsten Atelierbesuch so etwas wie ein Urvertrauen in die visuelle Darstellbarkeit komplexer Weltverhältnisse ein; die großen, gleichsam ausgeruhten Formate schienen von sinnlicher Gewissheit grundiert und verströmten eine grundsätzliche Vitalität. Das Schimmern der Pigmente, ihre oft mediterrane Farbigkeit und die Vielzahl miteinander kommunizierender malerischer Idiome erzeugten in ihrem Zusammenwirken eine bildimmanente Bewegung, die festgefügte Paradigmen und tradierte Ordnungsraster durcheinander wirbelte und solcherart die Verhältnisse zum Tanzen brachte. Das waren Reaktionen, wie sie gemeinhin im Umgang mit abstrakter Kunst eher selten auftreten und die daraufhin deuteten, dass hier den Konventionen der Gegenstandslosigkeit ein gehöriges Maß an Gegenwartstauglichkeit verabreicht worden war, dessen geistige und materielle Zusammensetzung zur Erkundung anstand. Damit verbunden war das Gefühl, mitten in Brüssel, im nicht unproblematischen Reibungsraum französischer und flämischer Mentalitäten, auf einen Ort gestoßen zu sein, an dem noch ganz andere, eher von New York inspirierte Energien vorherrschten, die eben jene Gegenwartstauglichkeit hervorbrachten und die ein weitverzweigtes Reservoir an Bezügen bildeten, aus dem Yves Zurstrassen sich für seine Arbeit souverän bedient. Insofern entsprach die visuelle Polyphonie vor den Augen des Betrachters durchaus der sich hier vollziehenden Konglomeration von Wirklichkeiten; klärende Sichtung tat also Not, um im Labyrinth der Möglichkeiten einen Faden des Zugangs zu gewinnen.

Auf den zweiten und alle folgenden Blicke sowie im direkten Gespräch öffneten sich die angedeuteten Referenzräume deutlicher und ließen einen Künstler hervortreten, der hellwach und wohlinformiert die diversen Ausprägungen der Abstraktion von der Moderne bis zur Gegenwart verfolgt und sich ganz bewusst im postmodernen Diskurs der Dekonstruktion und Decollage verortet hat. Das heißt, dass Yves Zurstrassen im Laufe seiner Werkentwicklung verschiedene Affinitäten etwa zur Geste des Informel, zur ornamentalen Aufladung oder zur Einbeziehung massenkultureller Muster im Umfeld des pattern paintings herausgebildet hat, ohne sie allerdings zur dauerhaften und marktkompatiblen „Handschrift“ verfestigt zu haben. Vielmehr ist sein überbordendes, stellenweise manisch sich fortschreibendes Oeuvre, charakterisiert durch große formale Offenheit und schnelle Wechsel der Perspektiven. Brüche und Frakturen strukturieren die Konvolute mit dem Wissen des Medienzeitalters, dass nichts mehr ewige Gültigkeit

beanspruchen kann und dass das klassisch moderne Streben der Abstraktion nach Autonomie und Absolutheit unter heutigen Bedingungen nur mehr anachronistisch sein kann. Insofern steht Yves Zurstrassen auch den „heroischen“ Entwürfen sowohl der Gründergeneration um Wassily Kandinsky, Kasimir Malewitsch und Piet Mondrian als auch den Nachkriegsgiganten Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt oder Mark Rothko zwar respektvoll, aber doch in unüberbrückbarer Entfernung gegenüber; was ihn interessiert und woran er in umfangreichen schöpferischen Schüben arbeitet, sind die pluralen Strategien einer zeitgemäßen Abstraktion. Gleichwohl bleibt er sich seiner weitverzweigten europäischen Wurzeln dabei immer bewusst, und im Gespräch betont er des öfteren die Kontinuität der malerischen Tradition, die sich letztlich als stärker erwies als alle Verdikte der Avantgarde im Umfeld von Marcel Duchamp und Marcel Broodthaers. Diese vitale Widerständigkeit der Malerei fasziniert Yves Zurstrassen bis heute immer wieder aufs Neue, und aus dem Strom der Anreger und Impulsgeber tauchen weitere Namen auf: natürlich Gerhard Richter, aber auch Jacques Villeglé, Christian Bonnefoi, Emilio Vedova, der spanische Künstler Broto...

In diesem Zusammenhang kommt auch ein Phänomen zur Sprache, das sich als Gleichzeitigkeit der Invention bezeichnen ließe und das sich dem bekannten Umstand verdankt, dass verschiedene Künstler zur selben Zeit an verwandten Fragestellungen arbeiten, oftmals von einander erst spät erfahren und auf je originäre Weise eine Formensprache hervorbringen, die erst aus dem Abstand der sogenannten Nachwelt heraus in ihrer gegenseitigen Referenz kenntlich wird. Hier fallen dann die Namen von drei Künstlern, die summarisch zur Generation von Yves Zurstrassen gehören, allesamt in New York City leben und deren Ausstrahlung ganz sicher für die bereits erwähnte amerikanische Aufladung der Atmosphäre im Brüsseler Atelier verantwortlich ist. Da wäre zum einen Jonathan Lasker, dessen paradigmatische Bilder modellhaft die Modi nichtgegenständlicher Darstellung vor Augen führen und der dabei dem internen Kampf der Systeme von Präsentation und Repräsentation, von malerischen und zeichnerischen Texturen, von bildimmanenter Hermetik und weltbezogener Durchlässigkeit besonderes Gewicht beimisst. Da wäre zum anderen Philip Taaffe zu nennen, der einen grundlegenden Beitrag zur künstlerischen Rehabilitierung des Ornaments als „kultureller Universalie“ geleistet hat und dessen farbintensive Bildschichtungen den historischen und sozialen Bezügen der quasi adoptierten Zeichen einen wirksamen Raum verschaffen. Und schließlich sei Christopher Wool erwähnt, dessen Arbeiten im Wechselspiel von flächendeckender Setzung und nachfolgender Überlagerung, von gestischer Spontaneität und ironiegesättigtem Kalkül ihre abgeklärt faszinierende Wirkung entfalten. Diesen drei künstlerischen Haltungen jedenfalls fühlt Yves Zurstrassen sich seit längerem besonders zugehörig, und als übergreifende Gemeinsamkeit sieht er die Notwendigkeit einer neuen abstrakten Malerei, die für sich beansprucht, Aspekte der Alltags-, Konsum- und Medienkultur als formerzeugende Elemente zu integrieren und als gesellschaftliche Wirklichkeit künstlerisch zu reflektieren. Dabei sind Schnittstellen zur Realität ausdrücklich erwünscht; das spannungsgeladene Verhältnis von Existenz und Transzendenz kann nicht länger, gemäß dem tradierten Kanon der Abstraktion, zugunsten von Weltferne, Reduktion und Askese beantwortet werden, sondern muss sich den Lebensbezügen programmatisch öffnen. die Paradigmen, verstört puristische Ambitionen und scheut sich nicht vor Muster, Ornament und Arabeske. Mit einem Wort: sie neigt dem Chaos des Lebens sich zu.

Betrachtet man unter diesen Prämissen die jüngsten Arbeiten, wird deutlich, wie konsequent sie dieser Programmatik folgen, oder besser noch, wie sich in ihren hybriden Eruptionen diese Programmatik materialisiert. Als erstes Beispiel soll eine Arbeit dienen, deren Titel den Tag ihrer Entstehung benennt – ein Verfahren, das Yves Zurstrassen seit längerem praktiziert und das unterstreicht, dass jedwede thematische oder erzählerische Assoziation zugunsten der Betonung einer ganz konkreten Zeitlichkeit getilgt ist. Das ausgewogene Hochformat „09 04 15“ bietet sich dem Betrachter vorerst als vielfach versiegelte Fläche dar, auf der gestische Schwünge und decollagierte Lochmustervorlagen in spannungsgeladener Koexistenz verharren.

Die Hauptwirkung geht von den hohen Farbintensitäten an Rot und Gelb aus, die ein Glühen und Lodern der Oberfläche evozieren und alle freischwebenden Formen in einen vertikalen Hitzestrom einbinden. Als nächstes fällt die Mehrschichtigkeit des Bildes ins Auge: in einem aufwendigen Prozess des Ineinanders von malerischer Handlung und eingefügtem beziehungsweise später wieder entferntem Ornament entstehen materiale und geistige Überlagerungen, die als Palimpseste der Gegenwart angesehen werden können. Aktuelle Setzungen überschreiben das bereits Bestehende, aufgedeckte Muster eröffnen Einsichten in tiefere Gründe.

Wichtig dabei ist zu wissen, dass Yves Zurstrassen mit dem von ihm praktizierten Prinzip der Decollage die Komplexität des entstehenden Bildorganismus nicht sukzessive aufbauend herbeiführen kann, sondern quasi vom Ende eines mehr oder weniger vorgewussten Ergebnisses her operieren muss. Durch das Aufbringen der Muster und Ornamente am Beginn des malerischen Prozesses und ihre dann erfolgende schichtweise Überdeckung birgt der Moment des vorsichtigen Lösens per Pinzette ein gewisses Maß an Überraschung und Unkalkulierbarkeit, das als notwendiges Pendant zur konzeptuellen Gesamtanlage fungiert. Insofern realisiert sich auf diese Weise der produktive Schwebezustand zwischen Intuition und Konzept immer wieder aufs Neue; ein Zustand übrigens, den auch die von Yves Zurstrassen geschätzten Pioniere der Decollage des Plakatabrisses, Mimmo Rotella und Raymond Hains, herbeizuführen wussten, indem sie die glatte Kontinuität plakatierter Werbebotschaften durch die fetzenhafte Freilegung darunterliegender Schichten aufbrachen. Im Gegensatz zu ihnen aber verwendet der

Nachgeborene Muster und Vorlagen, die auf den gesamten Fundus des Ornamentalen ausgreifen und islamisch konnotierte Formen ebenso verwenden wie geometrische, florale oder punktuelle Reihungen. Dieses ohnehin schon unerschöpfliche Reservoir wird per Computerbearbeitung noch gedehnt, diagonal gereiht oder ins Endlose gespiegelt und dann als jeweilige Mustervorlage auf dünnem Fließpapier ausgedruckt, ehe es mit der Leinwand und der eigentlichen malerischen Aktion in Kontakt kommt. Auf diese Weise entstehen Gebilde von hochgradiger visueller Komplexität, deren kantige Farbränder die Etappen des Entstehungsprozesses offenlegen und deren hybride Formensprache doch keine Hierarchie im Sinne von Vorder- und Hintergrund, von Supremat und Subordination mehr anerkennt. Vielmehr vermittelt sich wie in der Arbeit „09 04 15“ der Eindruck einer omnipräsenten Gleichzeitigkeit, eines simultanen Fließens von Sinn- und Bedeutungspartikeln in Raum und Zeit, wie es dem vernetzen und mobilen Urbanisten der westlichen Welt zu entsprechen scheint und wie es vielleicht in den Stunden der Entstehung dieser Arbeit ganz besonders vorherrschte. Denn nicht von Ungefähr assoziiert der eingangs erwähnte Hitzestrom der Farben einen Zustand der Ekstase und schöpferischen Eruption, wie er Momenten einer freien und selbstverantworteten Tätigkeit zu eigen ist; insofern gewährt das Bild auch einen unverstellten Einblick in das innere Laboratorium von Yves Zurstrassen und die gleißenden Prozeduren der Imagination.

Auch die Arbeit „09 03 04“, durch ihre immanente Datierung unschwer ebenfalls als zur jüngsten Produktion gehörend identifizierbar, demonstriert die bildkonstituierende Spannung zwischen gestischer Flächenbehandlung und applizierter Ornamentik eindrucksvoll, wenn auch zurückhaltender, eher lyrisch gestimmt. Der dominierende Rot-Grün-Kontrast fächert sich subtil zu mediterranem Türkis und malvenfarbenen Feldern, die engmaschigen Muster erinnern an die Lichtreflexe in den Kuppeln und Fensternischen maurischer Architektur, die frei schwebenden Kreise und Ovale legen die Lesart von Blumen, Seegetier und Farnen nahe. Anklänge an Gärten und Oasen strukturieren die Wahrnehmung des Betrachters, und aus dem Bildgedächtnis steigen die poetischen Paradiese von Paul Klee sowie die lichten Interieurs von Henri Matisse nach oben. Yves Zurstrassen, der in den Sommermonaten die Möglichkeit zur Plein-airMalerei in Andalusien und der Provence ausgiebig nutzt, ist auch mit diesen hier nur skizzierten Referenzen intensiv vertraut und hat sie als einen gewichtigen Bestandteil seines künstlerischen Naturells verinnerlicht. Diese sozusagen südliche Ausstrahlung, bedingt einerseits durch weitverzweigte familiäre Herkunft und andererseits durch bewusste Wahlverwandtschaft, bildet augenscheinlich ein notwendiges Pendant zur Orientierung an der New Yorker Szene und verleiht den aktuellen Arbeiten die eingangs konstatierte Frische und Vitalität. Insofern vereint Yves Zurstrassen in seinem jetzigen

Werk scheinbar mühelos unterschiedliche Prägungen und verfügt über ein bildnerisches Vokabular, das sich im direkten wie im übertragenen Sinne durch Vielsprachigkeit auszeichnet und das auf weltbewusste Synthesen zielt.

Naturgemäß konnte ein solch opulentes Instrumentarium nicht von Beginn an zur Verfügung stehen, sondern musste etappenweise entwickelt und erarbeitet werden.

Ohne dass an dieser Stelle auf alle Zäsuren der zurückgelegten Wegstrecke eingegangen werden kann, seien doch zwei vorangegangene Phasen der Erwähnung wert, in denen wichtige bildnerische Recherchen unternommen wurden und die, von heute aus betrachtet, in gewisser Weise hinführenden Charakter besaßen. Die erste Phase, die von den 1990er Jahren bis zum Beginn des neuen Millenniums währte, war gekennzeichnet durch die Dominanz dunkler Gründe, deren Spektrum von sattem Schwarz bis zu kontrastierenden hellen Partien reichte, die aber die eigentlichen Farben nur äußerst sparsam zuließ.

Eine Aura von existentiellem Ernst und tiefer Seinsversunkenheit umgab diese Arbeiten, die von ferne das memento mori spanischer Barockmalerei heraufbeschworen und in jüngerer Zeit wohl Antonio Tapies und Pierre Soulages als Referenzgrößen huldigten.

Doch auch in dieser Periode wurde die bildnerische Grundspannung bereits durch die Konfrontation verschiedener Programme erzeugt, die in ihrer jeweiligen Andersartigkeit sichtbar gemacht wurden, ohne das Ziel einer Angleichung oder Unterordnung zu verfolgen. Als Beispiel soll hier die Arbeit „Ouverture #1“ von 2001 dienen: ein großes dunkles Querformat, dessen Oberfläche von den Einschreibungen und Freilegungen divergierender Konzepte geprägt ist. Informelle Schwünge, die sich einem zeichnerischen Duktus verdanken, treffen auf malerisch changierende Flächen; organisch runde Formen, per Hand aus Fließpapier gerissen, collagiert und wieder abgezogen, werden mit den Kanten der Binnenrechtecke konfrontiert; lichtloses Schwarz wird von grauen Gründen perforiert; Komposition steht gegen Chaos – in solcherart Polaritäten bewegte sich die Bildsprache von Yves Zurstrassen zu dieser Zeit, und sie wirkt aus heutiger Sicht redlich, aber nicht hinreichend innovativ. Offensichtlich wurde dieses Defizit irgendwann spürbar, und es begann eine Phase des Experimentierens mit intensiv farbigen Papieren, die im Sinne einer bildnerischen Grundlagenforschung nun die Leinwände in serieller Reihung, gegenseitiger Überlagerung und raumsuggerierender Staffelung bedeckten. Die vorhandenen Paradigmen der Konkreten Kunst und der Op Art wurden dabei einer subjektiven Revision unterzogen und produktiv angeeignet: die wahrnehmungspsychologischen Wirkungen von Farben und Formen, ihre komplementären und ihre antagonistischen Verhältnisse, ihr visuelles Gewicht und ihr Sitz im Format. Jetzt gerieten Künstler wie Max Bill und Bridget Riley in den appropriativen Blick, aus jüngerer Zeit auch Beat Zoderer; alles, was sich mit elementaren und nichtgegenständlichen Mitteln sagen ließ, bildete nun

das Thema. Die Arbeit „03 09 16“ von 2003 soll dies exemplifizieren: ein quadratisches Format von jeweils zwei Metern Kantenlänge enthält eine Vielzahl von stark farbigen Binnenformen, die sich zu neun geometrischen Clustern formieren, die ihrerseits von zwei Schichten aus jeweils vier Vierecken gebildet werden. Die Formen loten die Spielräume zwischen Rechteck und Quadrat aus, die Farben scheinen das Spektrum möglicher Komplementär-, Intensitäts-, Simultan- und Sukzessivkontraste zu deklinieren. Durch die ausgewogene Verteilung der Elemente im Format herrscht trotz interner Spannungen eine große Stabilität im Ganzen vor; ein subtiles Austarieren zwischen Ordnung und Anarchie, zwischen Anpassung und Widerstand vollzieht sich da auf modellhafter Ebene und weitet das zweckfreie Formenspiel unversehens in Bereiche einer gesellschaftlichen Analogie.

So gesehen verblieben auch die scheinbar formalen Erkundungen dieser Phase nie nur auf der Stufe selbstbezüglicher Reflexion, sondern suchten, wie vermittelt auch immer, nach Wegen einer zeitgenössischen Abstraktion, die die Komplexität und gleichzeitige Richtungslosigkeit des vorherrschenden Lebensgefühls zu fassen vermag.

Wenn Yves Zurstrassen heute in seinem weitläufigen Atelier steht, den Blick über die akribisch geordneten Keilrahmen, Farbtöpfe, Pinsel, Mustervorlagen und sonstigen Utensilien schweifen lässt und sich täglich neu ans Werk begibt, hat er naturgemäß ebensowenig eine generelle Lösung für alle anstehenden Kunst- und Lebensfragen parat wie in früheren Phasen. Wohl aber hat er an künstlerischer Erfahrung und Kraft in dem Sinne gewonnen, dass er über ein breitgefächertes Instrumentarium verfügt und es allen situativen Erfordernissen gemäß einzusetzen weiß. Durch die decollagierende Verwendung der Muster und Ornamente hat er sich Wirklichkeitsbereiche erschlossen, die der tradierten Abstraktion unzugänglich waren. Durch die virtuose Kombinatorik gestischer und geometrischer, expressiver und konzeptueller Bildprogramme hat er sich eine dynamische Flexibilität erworben, mit der auch die heutige Welt darstellbar bleibt.

Und er hat, im geistigen Verbund mit den erwähnten anderen Künstlern, daran gearbeitet, die Abstraktion gegenwartsfähig zu machen, indem sie sich, wie Jonathan Lasker es sagte, den „Texturen des Lebens“ öffnet.

In a Silent Way

Polyglot Pictorial Programme Yves Zurstrassen and Contemporary Abstraction Harald Kunde

Anyone who has seen Yves Zurstrassen’s current works at first hand in the ideal lighting conditions of his Brussels studio will have been impressed by their freshness and radiant, spatial presence. From the outset of such an encounter — relegating art history considerations to the background in favour of immediate perception — the initial emotions are revealed, and it is the quality of these emotions which often decides what will follow and the intensity of a potential approach. Thus, during a recent visit to the studio, a deep-rooted sense of trust was established in the capacity to represent complex, universal situations; large formats apparently at rest are seemingly charged with a sensual assurance and emanate a profound vitality. The interaction between the shimmering pigments combined with the often Mediterranean chromaticism and the countless pictorial idioms that communicate amongst themselves generated an inherent movement in the work which shattered traditional paradigms and structures, thereby rejecting established relationships. Such reactions are normally quite rarely experienced when frequenting abstract art and demonstrate that a healthy dose of contemporaneousness had been administered here to the conventions of non-figurative art, a contemporaneousness whose intellectual and material nature still remain to be explored. In the heart of Brussels, a city at the centre of sometimes problematic frictions between the French-speaking and Flemish communities, this was combined with the sense of having chanced upon a place where quite different energies reign, inspired more by New York, which had given rise to this contemporaneousness and established this labyrinthine reserve of references on which Yves Zurstrassen draws confidently for his work. To this extent, the visual polyphony we saw perfectly summed up the realities that were being played out here. Hence the absolute need to examine it in order to find the thread which would guide us through this labyrinth.

These references were illuminated by subsequent contemplations, as well as during our conversations, which revealed a quick-witted, highly informed artist, who perfectly masters the various trends of abstraction, from the modern to the contemporary period, and deliberately establishes himself in the post-modern discourse of deconstruction and decollage. Thus during the creation of his work, Yves Zurstrassen has developed various affinities, notably with the informal gesture, with ornamental excess and also the introduction of motifs belonging to mass culture taken from pattern paintings, without fixing them however in a repetitive, commercial “signature”. On the contrary, his prolific oeuvre is marked by a great sincerity and rapid changes of perspective. Ruptures and fractures shape these circumvolutions, underpinned by the inherent wisdom of the media age, which knows that nothing is able to lay claim to eternal validity and that under the present conditions, any aspirations of classical abstraction from the modern period in relation to autonomy and the absolute can only be seen as anachronistic. To this

extent, Yves Zurstrassen is equally as opposed to the “heroic” projects of the pioneers, from Wassily Kandinsky and Kasimir Malevich to Piet Mondrian, as to the projects of the post-war giants Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt and Mark Rothko, with whom he maintains a highly respectful but nevertheless unbridgeable distance.

The artist is interested in the multiple strategies of contemporary abstraction, on which he focuses for extensive phases of his work. Yet he is still highly aware of the numerous ramifications of his European roots and time and again, he stresses the continuity of a pictorial tradition, which ultimately proved to be stronger than all the avant-garde condemnations, in the wake of Marcel Duchamp and Marcel Broodthaers. Painting’s vitality and resistance have never ceased to fascinate Yves Zurstrassen.

Other names then emerge from this flow of great inspirers and purveyors of impulses: Gerhard Richter of course, but also Jacques Villeglé, Emilio Vedova, etc.

In this context, we can also consider the factor of simultaneity, which refers to how various artists are working at the same time on related issues but only become aware of one another’s work at a much later stage, each one developing their own formal language in an original manner, with common references only appearing fully with the distance of a generation.

Thus three other artists spring to mind, all of whom belong to Yves Zurstrassen’s generation and are living in New York: firstly there is Jonathan Lasker, whose paradigmatic works perfectly illustrate non-figurative representation modes, whilst at the same time assigning particular importance to the internal struggle between presentation and representation, between pictorial and graphic textures, and between the inherent hermetism of painting and the transparency of the world. Philip Taaffe on the other hand offers an essential contribution to the reinstatement of ornament in art as a “universal language”; his intensely chromatic, pictorial strata create an effective space for the historic and social references of the signs he adopts. Then there is Christopher Wool, whose works combine flat applications of colour, successive superimpositions, spontaneity of gesture and calculation infused with irony, to fascinating effect. These are three artistic attitudes with which Yves Zurstrassen has for a long time felt a certain affinity.

He acknowledges the need to take into account these shared elements and this new, abstract painting which calls for the integration of aspects of daily life, the consumer society and media culture as generators of forms and which seeks to reflect social reality in art. However, it would be highly desirable to have some kind of interface with this reality. It is no longer possible to react to this strained relationship between existence and transcendence according to traditional canons of abstraction, by encouraging detachment from the world and a reduction to what is essential and ascetic. On the contrary, the abstraction that is required has to be programmatically open to life. Such abstraction blurs paradigms, overturns purist ambitions and does not fear motifs, ornaments and arabesques. In short, it tends towards the chaos of life.

If we consider his most recent works in the light of these premises, we observe that they comply systematically with this programme or, better still, they give practical expression to it through hybrid eruptions. By way of an example, we would take a work whose title indicates its creation date — a procedure that Yves Zurstrassen

has practised for a long time and which emphasises that any specific thematic or narrative association highlighting a very concrete timeframe is obsolete. With its highly balanced format of figures, 09 04 15 at first appears to the viewer as a surface that has been varnished several times, in which traces of gestural impulses and decollages of openwork motifs subsist and coexist, generating great tension. The major effect arises from the extreme intensity of colours, red and yellow, which evoke incandescence and a blazing of the surface and integrate all the suspended forms in a vertical, thermal surge. The second aspect that stands out is the complexity of the numerous pictorial layers: by means of a complicated process combining traceries of paint and the insertion of ornaments that are subsequently removed, Zurstrassen obtains physical and mental stratifications that could be considered as palimpsests of the present.

The most recent applications cover what already exists and rewrite it; the revealed motifs offer viewpoints to deeper planes. It is important to realise here that with his decollage practice, Yves Zurstrassen can not achieve this complexity of the pictorial organism in progress by recourse to successive constructions, but that he has to effectively work on the basis of an intuited result. Through the application of motifs and ornaments at the beginning of the process, then by covering them layer by layer, the moment where they are carefully detached with tweezers includes a certain element of surprise and unpredictability and operates as a counterpoint in an overall conceptual device. In this way he constantly recreates this productive state half way between intuition and conceptualisation. Furthermore, the pioneers of poster decollage such as Mimmo Rotella and Raymond Hains — artists whom Yves Zurstrassen greatly appreciates — were able to bring about this state when they broke the very smooth continuity of displayed messages by tearing them away and exposing the layers beneath. But unlike them, their successor uses motifs and models that encroach upon the entire ornamental content; he uses forms with Islamic connotations as well as geometric, floral and perforated series. This already inexhaustible repertoire is further extended by means of computer processing: diagonal alignments and infinite mirror effects are printed, like motifs, on fine paper before coming into contact with the canvas, prior to the actual painting. Structures of an extreme complexity therefore arise, whose coloured borders with marked edges reveal the stages of their creation. They are structures

with a formal, hybrid language that does not however acknowledge any hierarchy in the sense of a foreground and a background, nor supremacy or subordination. On the contrary, as in 09 04 15, we have the impression of an omnipresent simultaneity, a concomitant flow of particles of meaning and signifiers in space and time that appear to correspond to western urban planners’ mobility and networking practices, which perhaps predominated at the time this work was created. For it is no accident that the aforementioned thermal surge of colours brings together a state of ecstasy and creative eruption peculiar to moments of freely accepted responsibility inherent to the act of painting. As such, this painting offers an unhindered view into Yves Zurstrassen’s private laboratory and the dazzling workings of his imagination.

Likewise, the work 09 03 04, easily identifiable as also belonging to his recent production, offers an impressive demonstration of the tension, albeit discreet and almost lyrical, between the gestural surface treatment and the applications of ornaments that make up the painting. The dominant red/green contrast unfurls subtly to give Mediterranean turquoise tones and fields of mauve. The motifs of closely worked meshes are reminiscent of light reflecting on the cupolas and moucharabies of Moorish architecture; suspended ovals and circles suggest variations of flowers, marine animals and ferns. Reminiscences of gardens and oases structure the viewer’s perception and conjure up Klee’s poetic paradises and Matisse’s luminous interiors in their pictorial memory. Yves Zurstrassen, who makes the most of opportunities to paint in Andalousia and Provence during the summer months, has internalised the references evoked here, of which he is an informed and regular user. This southern influence, due on the one hand to family connections and on the other to consciously chosen affinities, manifestly constitutes a necessary counterpart to his interest for the New York scene and confers on his current work the freshness and vitality mentioned earlier. To this extent, in his recent works Yves Zurstrassen appears to effortlessly combine the most diverse influences, using a visual vocabulary that is literally and metaphorically distinguished by a polyglot dimension, which is consciously aimed at embracing the whole world.

Normally, no artist could have such a broad arsenal of instruments at his disposal from the outset, but first has to develop and enhance it step by step. Without going into detail here of all the abrupt transitions of the path he has followed, two periods are worth mentioning, as they are phases during which Zurstrassen undertook major visual research which, with hindsight, had something of an initiatory nature. The first, which covered the entire 1990s and the beginning of the new millennium, was marked by the dominance of dark backgrounds, whose spectrum extended from saturated black to luminous, contrasting areas which nevertheless only permitted an extreme economy of

colour. An aura of seriousness and a profoundly contemplative nature surrounds these works which, from a distance, evoked the memento mori of Spanish Baroque painting and paid tribute to more recent works, those of Antoni Tàpies and Pierre Soulages.

However, even during this period, the immanent visual tension was already generated by the confrontation between various programmes, emphasised by their mutual differences, with no attempt by the artist to achieve any harmonisation or subordination.

By way of example, we would cite here a work called Ouverture #1, from 2001. It is a large-format, dark landscape whose surface is stamped with inscriptions and contains exposures of divergent concepts. Gestures of an informal dynamic due to the graphic style of the brushstroke encounter changing pictorial surfaces.

Round, organic forms, as if torn by hand in the paper, then pasted and again detached, contrast with the boundary of the rectangle. An opaque black is perforated on a grey background; the composition contrasts with the chaos. During this period, a pictorial language developed between such opposites which in hindsight may appear sincere, but was insufficiently innovative. This deficit clearly made itself felt one day, signalling the start of an experimentation phase using brightly coloured papers, in the spirit of fundamental, visual research. The canvases from this time were covered in serial alignments, superimpositions and gradations suggesting space. However, the contemporary paradigms — of concrete art and Op Art — were subjectively reviewed and assimilated within the production: psychological effects resulting from the perception of colours and shapes, complementary and antagonistic relationships, visual balancing and positioning within the format. Henceforward, the artist’s vision was to appropriate other artists, such as Max Bill and Bridget Riley. Everything that could be expressed with elementary, non-figurative means therefore constituted the theme of his work. The piece called 03 09 16, from 2003, clearly illustrates this: a square format measuring two metres by two metres contains countless brightly coloured structures which generate nine geometric clusters, each composed of two layers consisting of four squares. These structures reframe the spaces between rectangles and squares, the colours appear to range across the entire spectrum of contrasts: complementarity, intensity, simultaneity and succession. Through the balanced distribution of elements on the surface, a great stability reigns over the whole despite the internal tensions; a subtle balance between order and anarchy, between conformity and resistance, operates here par excellence and unexpectedly extends a formal, purposeless game into the realms of social analogy. Seen from this angle, the apparently formal explorations from this period were never confined to self-centred reflection, but sought pathways — whatever impression they gave — towards a contemporary

abstraction that was capable of capturing complexity at the same time as disorientation, specific to the vital, prevailing sentiment.

Today, when Yves Zurstrassen allows his gaze to shift to the carefully ordered frames in his vast studio, to the pots of paint, brushes, models of motifs and other tools and sets to work each day, he has no more ready-made solution, valid for all the artistic, vital problems, than in the past. But he has nevertheless acquired the artistic experience, strength and certainty of having an extensive visual arsenal and knowing how to use it according to requirements and situations. Through decollage motifs and ornaments, he has exploited areas of reality that were inaccessible to traditional abstraction.

Through a virtuoso combination of gestural and geometric, expressive and conceptual pictorial programmes, he has acquired a dynamic flexibility with which the world can still be represented. In an intellectual proximity to other artists, he has contributed to this revival of contemporaneousness in abstraction which, to cite Jonathan Lasker, has now opened up “to the textures of life”.

Chaque jour, nous, les humains, accumulons des expériences visuelles apparemment banales qui nous servent d’orientations et de directives sans que nous devions pour autant faire intervenir notre conscience.

Vassili Kandinsky parlait, dans ce contexte du “Grand abstrait et du Grand réel”, d’une “réduction à une sorte d’essence artistique qui ne devait mener à rien d’autre qu’à une vie coulée avec emphase dans certains moules”. Ce leitmotiv se retrouve aussi chez Yves Zurstrassen, l’inventeur de formes, qui conglutine en toute conscience ses expériences et son énergie créatrice, transforme, dans un certain segment de son travail artistique les codes et impulsions inhérents à ces expériences apparemment banales, les transpose dans ce langage formel qui lui est propre et le distingue entre-temps au niveau international.

Après une exposition couronnée de succès à l’IKOB (le musée d’art contemporain d’Eupen) en 2004, j’ai invité Yves Zurstrassen à présenter des œuvres de 2009 dans le cadre d’une exposition intitulée “Grid Paintings – Aktuelle abstrakte malerei” (Grid Paintings – Peinture abstraite contemporaine) au cœur de la Communauté germanophone de Belgique, à proximité de l’Allemagne et des Pays-Bas. Cette deuxième exposition a eu lieu au bon moment, puisque l’artiste bruxellois a réalisé ces dernières années des œuvres très contemporaines qui, au niveau international, s’inscrivent dans la tendance de cette nouvelle abstraction internationale teintée de conceptualisme. Certes, il s’agit à ses yeux essentiellement de forme et de couleur, mais ce qui l’intéresse au plus haut point est cette alternative, cette tension entre la liberté expressive du coup de pinceau et une conception très stricte de la composition du tableau.

En voyage, Zurstrassen photographie avec son téléphone portable toutes sortes de structures, motifs, grilles et trames découverts dans les rues, maisons et bâtiments historiques qui constituent une partie de notre identité culturelle européenne. Grâce à une technique de combinatoire très complexe et unique en son genre, où se mêlent les informations photographiques initiales et un traitement de l’image assisté par un ordinateur connecté à une machine à découper, il fabrique un pochoir d’une extrême finesse en papier journal vierge qu’il utilise à plusieurs reprises pendant le processus de peinture, en le collant sur le lin, le recouvrant de couleur, alternant les couches de peinture sur les pochoirs et les pochoirs sur les couches de peinture. En un laps de temps très bref qui présuppose une conceptualisation préalable de la composition, du choix des couleurs et de la structure de la surface, l’artiste doit réaliser son tableau avec une rapidité relative sans jamais pouvoir embrasser l’ensemble du regard. À la fin de cette opération, il recherche tous les pochoirs collés et dissimulés sous les couches de peinture, les détache comme des membranes avec une pincette et enlève en même temps en partie les couches picturales précédentes ; une méthode de composition résolument opposée à la technique classique d’accumulation de strates de peinture.

de pinceau très gestuels et de motifs récurrents sans cesse répétés, de trames, de grilles et de structures géométriques. Nous les rencontrons tous les jours dans l’univers polymorphe du monde végétal et animal, dans les structures des couvercles de canalisations, dans les dessins des carreaux de faïence et carrelages, dans les motifs imprimés de papiers peints, les étoffes et les tapis, comme dans les reliefs muraux, frises, boiseries de fenêtres. Ils se trouvent dans les symboles géométriques propres aux diverses cultures ou dans les matériaux de clôture, palissades en bois, protections visuelles, verres structurés et même dans les analyses structurelles établies par les scientifiques pour représenter des atomes, des cristaux ou des molécules.

Depuis le début des années 1980, Yves Zurstrassen travaille au sein du milieu de la peinture abstraite, à des longueurs d’avance des influences résiduelles des modernes parisiens encore présentes dans le pays, tandis que l’art conceptuel est avant tout montré dans les expositions internationales.

Il a fallu attendre que l’artiste allemand Gerhard Richter sorte la peinture de l’ombre et contribue à faire accéder le médium huile à un nouveau statut pour que la critique d’art et les commissaires d’exposition tournent à nouveau leur regard vers l’abstraction. Les artistes américains de la scène new-yorkaise, mais aussi et surtout des Européens comme Peter Doig, Günther Förg ou Bernard Frize, rencontrent un grand intérêt. La Région de Bruxelles a récemment chargé Yves Zurstrassen d’intégrer une œuvre d’art en situation urbaine. En avril 2009, l’œuvre intitulée A Beautiful Day était solennellement dévoilée à la station de métro Gare de l‘Ouest, à Molenbeek, une importante plaque tournante du réseau bruxellois. Sur un mur haut de quatre mètres et d’une centaine de mètres de longueur, qui longe la voie du métro, se reflètent une multitude de motifs empruntés aux cultures du monde entier que Zurstrassen a transférés, pour certains au moyen d’agrandissements photographiques de ses tableaux, sur des plaques métalliques, le tout exprimant la mixité démographique dans ce quartier multiculturel de Bruxelles.

Zurstrassen réalise une peinture libre, telle que la voulaient les protagonistes de l’abstraction, une peinture qui n’exprime ni sentiments personnels perceptibles, ni message, pas même politique. Il convie le spectateur à trouver lui-même l’accès à sa peinture en se positionnant librement par rapport à la forme, la couleur, le mouvement et ces motifs qui appartiennent à sa sphère et tiennent compte du contexte social.

La peinture de Zurstrassen constitue un renouvellement unique de la technique picturale et du traitement structurel de la surface du tableau peint à l’huile sur toile.

C’est un hommage permanent aux formes, couleurs, mouvements et structures qui, parcourant les méandres de l’esthétique, débouchent dans l’immensité du sublime.

Täglich machen wir Menschen in unserem Alltag scheinbar banale visuelle Erfahrungen, die uns als Orientierung und als Richtlinien dienen, ohne dass wir dabei unser Bewusstsein einschalten müssen.

Wassily Kandinsky hat in diesem Zusammenhang vom „Großen Abstrakten und Großen Realen“ gesprochen, von der „Reduktion auf eine Art von künstlerischer Essenz, die noch nichts anderes zustande bringen sollte als ein emphatisch in Formen gegossenes Leben“.

Dieses Leitmotiv finden wir bei Yves Zurstrassen, der als Formgestalter diese Erfahrungen sehr bewusst mit seiner kreativen Energie vernetzt, die Kodes und Impulse dieser scheinbar banalen Erfahrungen zielbewusst in ein bestimmtes Segment seines künstlerischen Schaffens verarbeitet, sie in eine eigene Formsprache versetzt, die ihn mittlerweile im internationalen Vergleich auszeichnet.

Nach einer erfolgreichen Ausstellung in 2004 im IKOB, dem Museum für Zeitgenössische Kunst in Eupen, habe ich Yves Zurstrassen eingeladen, seine neuen Werke von 2009 unter dem Titel „Grid Paintings – Aktuelle abstrakte Malerei“ in der Deutschsprachigen Gemeinschaft Belgiens, in direkter Nähe zu Deutschland und den Niederlanden zu zeigen. Diese zweite Ausstellung kommt zur richtigen Zeit, denn der Brüsseler Künstler schafft in den letzten Jahren eine sehr aktuelle Abstraktion, die sich weltweit im Trend einer neuen internationalen Abstraktion mit konzeptuellem Einschlag bewegt.

Sicher geht es ihm grundlegend um Form und Farbe, aber weit mehr interessiert ihn auch die alternative Spannung zwischen einer expressiv lockeren Pinselführung und einem streng vorkonzipierten Bildaufbau.

Auf seinen Reisen fotografiert Zurstrassen mit seinem Handy alle möglichen Muster- und Gitterstrukturen, die er auf der Straße, in Häusern und historischen Bauten aufspürt, und die ein Stück Identität unserer europäischen Kulturen ausmachen.

Mit einer sehr komplexen und einzigartigen Kombinationstechnik zwischen der primären Fotoinformation und einer darauf folgenden Computerbearbeitung mit Anschluss an einer Ausstechmaschine, produziert er aus unbedrucktem Zeitungspapier eine sehr dünne feingliedrige Schablone, die er während dem Malprozess abwechselnd mehrfach auf das Leinen collagiert und übermalt, Farbschichten über Schablonen, Schablonen über Farbschichten. Im Rahmen eines sehr kurzen Zeitfensters, das ein konzeptuelles Vorplanen von Bildkomposition, Farbauswahl und Flächenstruktur voraussetzt, muss der Künstler sein Bild relativ rasch malen, wobei er niemals die Gesamtkomposition überblicken kann. Am Ende dieser Prozedur spürt der Künstler alle collagierten Schablonen, die hinter den Farbschichten verdeckt sind auf, und zieht sie wie eine Haut mit einer Pinzette ab, wobei er gleichzeitig die vorangegangenen Farbschichten teilweise abzieht, eine Kompositionsmethode, die ganz im Gegensatz zu der herkömmlichen Akkumulationstechnik von Farbschichten steht.

frei gestischen Pinselspuren und immer sich wiederholenden, repetitiven Mustern von geometrischen Raster- und Gitterstrukturen, denen wir täglich begegnen: sei es in der Formenvielfalt von Pflanzen- und Tierwelt, sei es in Oberflächenstrukturen von Kanaldeckeln, Kachel- und Fliesenmuster, sei es als bedruckte Muster auf Tapeten, Teppichen und Stoffen, sei es als architektonische Ornamente auf Mauerreliefs, Friese, Fensterstrukturen, geometrischen Symbole aus den verschiedensten Kulturen, sei es als Eingrenzungsmaterial wie Lattenzäune, Sichtschutz, Glasstrukturen oder sei es als Materialanalyse mit wissenschaftlichem Ansatz in der Darstellung von Atom-, Kristall- oder Molekular-Strukturen…

Seit Beginn der 80ziger Jahre arbeitet Yves Zurstrassen wie ein Besessener an der Entwicklung einer sehr eigenständigen Position innerhalb der abstrakten Malerei, weit vorweg von den landesweit reliktartigen Einflüssen der Pariser Moderne, während auf internationalen Ausstellungen vornehmlich die konzeptuelle Kunst gezeigt wird.

Erst nachdem der deutsche Künstler Gerhard Richter die Malerei von ihrem Schattendasein befreit, und dem Medium Ölmalerei weltweit zu einem neuen Status verhilft, richten Kunstkritiker und Kuratoren wieder vermehrt ihren Blick auf die abstrakte Malerei: nicht nur amerikanische Künstler der New Yorker Szene, aber vor allem auch europäische Künstler wie Pieter Doig, Günther Förg oder Bernard Frize finden großes Interesse. Im Sog dieser Bewegung wird Zurstrassen von Galeristen auf den internationalen Kunstmessen wie Basel, Miami-Beach, Tefaf Maastricht, Chicago, Art Brussels, Arco Madrid und der Fiac Paris gezeigt. Hier findet er die Aufmerksamkeit, die ihm viele Jahre lang verwehrt blieb.

Die Region Brüssel beauftragte Yves Zurstrassen mit der Integration eines Kunstwerkes; April 2009 wurde das Werk A Beautiful Day in der „Gare de l‘Ouest“ bei Molenbeek, einem Kreuzpunkt vom Streckennetz der Brüsseler Metro feierlich in Anwesenheit des Belgischen Königs Albert II eröffnet. Auf einer langen Wand von vier Metern Höhe und hundert Metern Länge entlang der Metrotrasse spiegelt sich über eine Vielzahl von kulturellen Mustern aus aller Welt, die Zurstrassen von seinen Gemälden partiell in vielfacher Vergrößerung fotografisch auf Metallplatten übertrug, die sehr gemischte Völkerstruktur in diesem multikulturellen Ortsteil von Brüssel wider.

Zurstrassen schafft ein Medium, frei wie es die Protagonisten der Abstraktion wollten, ohne erkennbare Vermittlung von persönlichen Gefühlen, Botschaften oder gar politischen Statements. Er fordert den Betrachter zu einer eigenständigen Zugangsfindung auf, mit einer persönlichen und freien Positionierung zu Form, Farbe, Bewegung und Kulturmuster, die jeweils Teil seiner Sphäre sind und seinen gesellschaftlichen Kontext respektieren.

Zurstrassens Malerei ist Gegenstand einer einzigartigen Erneuerung von Maltechnik und Oberflächenstrukturierung mit Ölfarbe auf Leinwand.

Sie ist eine immer währende Hommage an Formen, Farben, Bewegung und Strukturen, die über das große Delta der Ästhetik in ein Meer von Erhabenheit münden.

From Great Realism to Great Abstraction Francis Feidler

Every day, as human beings, we accumulate apparently banal, visual experiences which offer us guidelines and instructions with no intervention by our consciousness.

In this context, Wassily Kandinsky spoke of “Great abstraction, great realism” and of a “reduction of art to its artistic essence, which could only ultimately lead to a moulded life with an emphasis on certain forms.” This leitmotif is also found in the work of Yves Zurstrassen, the inventor of forms who conglutinates his experiences and his creative energy entirely consciously. In a certain segment of his artistic work, he transforms the codes and impulses inherent to these apparently banal experiences and transposes them into his unique, formal language, which has become his international hallmark.

Following a highly successful exhibition at the IKOB (the contemporary art museum in Eupen) in 2004, I invited Yves Zurstrassen to present works from 2009 in the context of an exhibition called “Grid Paintings – Aktuelle abstrakte malerei” (Grid Paintings – Contemporary Abstract Painting) in the heart of Belgium’s German-speaking community, not far from Germany and the Netherlands. This second exhibition is perfectly timed, as during recent years the Brussels artist has produced highly contemporary pieces, which fit squarely within the worldwide trend towards this new, international abstraction tinged with conceptualism. Of course, in his view they are essentially a matter of form and colour, but the focus of his interest is this contrast and tension between the expressive freedom of the brushstroke and a very strict conception of the composition of the painting.

On his travels, Zurstrassen uses his mobile phone to photograph all kinds of structures, motifs, grids and frames found in the streets, houses and historic buildings which constitute a part of our European cultural identity. Through a unique and highly complex combinatory technique, where initial photographic information is associated with computer-assisted image processing linked up to a cutting machine, he creates an extremely fine stencil in unprinted newspaper which he uses several times during the painting process, pasting it onto the linen, covering it with colour, alternating layers of paint on the stencils and stencils on the layers of paint. In a very short space of time which assumes a prior conceptualisation of the composition, choice of colours and surface structure, the artist has to create his painting with a relative speed without ever being able to contemplate its entirety. At the end of this operation, he seeks out all the glued stencils hidden beneath the layers of paint and detaches them, like membranes, using tweezers and at the same time he removes part of the preceding pictorial layers; it is a composition method that is resolutely opposed to the traditional technique of a strata of accumulated paint.

Zurstrassen’s formal language is based on signs, symbols and colours, to become an abstract, pictorial language marked by superimpositions of highly gestural brushstrokes and endlessly repeated, recurrent motifs, with networks, grids and geometric structures. We encounter these daily in the polymorphous plant and animal world, in the structures of manhole covers, the designs on ceramic wall and floor tiles, printed

motifs on wallpaper, fabrics and carpets, as well as in mural reliefs, friezes and window frames. They are also found in geometric symbols specific to various cultures or in the materials of fences and wooden palisades, visual screens, structured glass and even in structural analyses established by scientists to represent atoms, crystals and molecules.

Since the early 1980s, Yves Zurstrassen has worked in the field of abstract painting, leagues ahead of the residual influences of modern Parisians that are still exhibited nationally, even though conceptual art is above all presented in international exhibitions.

It was not until the German artist Gerhard Richter brought painting out of the shadows and helped the medium of oil to achieve a new status that art critics and exhibition curators began once again to look at abstraction. American artists from the New York scene, but also and above all Europeans such as Peter Doig, Günther Förg and Bernard Frize, met with great interest. The Brussels Region recently commissioned Yves Zurstrassen to incorporate a work of art into an urban context. In April 2009, A Beautiful Day was solemnly unveiled at the Gare de l’Ouest underground station in Molenbeek, one of the busiest intersections in the Brussels transport network. A four-metre high wall, extending about one hundred metres alongside the train track, is filled with a host of motifs borrowed from cultures from around the world. Zurstrassen transferred them onto metal plates, sometimes by making photographic enlargements of his paintings. The entire work expresses the demographic plurality of this multicultural district of Brussels.

Zurstrassen produces free painting, as aspired to by the protagonists of abstractionism. It is painting that expresses neither perceptible, personal feelings nor any message, not even political. He invites the observer to find his own way into his painting by positioning himself freely in relation to the form, colour and movement, as well as these motifs which belong to his sphere and take into account the social context.

Zurstrassen’s painting constitutes a unique renewal of the pictorial technique and structural treatment of the painting’s surface, through the application of oil on canvas.

It is a permanent tribute to forms, colours, movements and structures which, following the meandering course of aesthetics, flow into the immensity of the sublime.

Yves Zurstrassen commence virtuellement sa vie de peintre – il a alors vingt ans –, longtemps avant d’être à l’ouvrage, par un “rêve crétois” empli d’une substance précieuse, de lumière et de couleur, qu’il portera comme une attente et la réponse à une question non encore posée. Cette vision, il aura le sentiment de l’incarner dix ans plus tard, déclarant à propos de ses dernières peintures (1986-1996) : “Elles sont la transcription d’un rêve, un rêve éveillé. Mais quand je travaille, je n’y pense jamais, tout cela est inconscient. […] Le rêve est comme une vie parallèle, une sorte de prémonition visuelle […] comme si on filmait mon geste pendant toute ma vie 1.”

Dans “Le Reniement de Saint-Pierre”, Baudelaire écrit de façon énigmatique : “Certes, je sortirai, quant à moi, satisfait. D’un monde où l’action n’est pas la sœur du rêve”. Les exégèses sont nombreuses pour démêler ce qui chez Baudelaire et selon ses propres mots distinguait le “rêve naturel“ du “rêve absurde“. “À la différence de Gérard de Nerval, Baudelaire n’est guère préoccupé par le dessein de peindre "l’épanchement des songes dans la vie réelle" mais plutôt soucieux de séparer le rêve de la réalité, de les concevoir comme deux univers disjoints 2 .” Tout créateur vit sans doute cette disjonction. Comment et pourquoi l’abolir ? Comment garder le rêve en écartant le sommeil 3 ? ” ou le maîtriser pour s’en détacher sans le trahir, l’assouvir puis le mettre au monde ? Ces vies, de l’action et du rêve, sœurs dans l’équidistance cheminant sans jamais se rencontrer, partagent les pulsions et les raisons et appellent un destin, une conquête pour qu’enfin l’art ne soit plus l’accomplissement d’un songe, mais s’ouvre à la souveraine liberté d’un mensonge.

“C’est en prêtant son corps que le peintre change le monde en peinture“, écrivait Maurice Merleau-Ponty 4. Zurstrassen éprouve la peinture au travers d’un engagement physique de chaque instant comme on se jette ou comme on est emporté. Il en fut ainsi dès un premier temps de son travail, que l’on pourrait dire lyrique. En lui, une force et une solarité, une aptitude à recevoir la lumière, à s’en pénétrer et à en rayonner fondent un contexte par une complicité avec les ciels parcourus. Il perçoit les lumières comme d’autres, pointilleux, disent des latitudes et sait dans sa peinture exprimer le Nord et le 1. Sud, des douceurs et des violences, dans une tumultueuse concordance des temps.

La couleur, les couleurs sont lumière, participant de ses correspondances et de ses constructions. Convergent alors dans ses toiles le geste et son amplitude, cette lumière et ces couleurs mais encore la musique toujours présente et ce qu’on pourrait appeler une aptitude au bonheur. Les peintures de l’exposition de 1996, faites souvent de vastes entrelacs se recouvrant et se répondant, forment de grands paysages abstraits – pur plaisir sans représentation – saisis dans un mouvement de voltes provoquant des transparences, des fusions et des effusions, un plaisir du corps exultant, radiant et dionysiaque. Il y a là un flot “toujours recommencé”, des chorus pris et repris, une absence de centralité donnant aux détails la force et l’autonomie du tout, des profondeurs enfouies qui cependant transparaissent et des surfaces éclatantes semblant rejoindre un dedans, une intériorité invitante. Si l’on pense alors à Willem de Kooning, c’est parce qu’il écrivit “La chair est la raison pour laquelle fut inventée la peinture à l’huile”.

Ce temps de l’emportement et de la formation de soi exige une appétence sans fond et le goût du côtoiement. Avant le grand voyage, il faut faire des visites à la famille et apprendre la géographie. Autodidacte et expérimentateur, Zurstrassen ne craint pas les grands arbres. Il sait aimer et connaît ses pères, frères et cousins. Ainsi peut-il être lui-même et s’inventer dans l’effort et le plaisir quotidien. “Mon travail se situe davantage dans la continuité de ma propre expérience”. L’engagement est intense, continu, retrouvé chaque jour au petit matin et mené jusqu’au soir dans l’espace protégé de l’atelier, l’espace de tous les dangers. Quelques titres succincts, “Fragments”, “Variation”, “Ouverture”, “Décollage”, “Rêverie”, “Jazz” venaient autrefois qualifier l’œuvre achevée. Depuis une dizaine d’années, le titre, c’est la date, au fil des heures et des jours en une longue éphéméride. Plus de mille œuvres à ce jour, dans une battue poursuivie jusqu’à l’épuisement. Le messager devient le message et le peintre la peinture. Qui conduit l’autre dans cette course, quelle délibération ou quel enivrement ? Point de recherche de modèles ni de protecteurs ; point de cercle ou de cénacle. Zurstrassen travaille seul, n’ayant ni le goût de s’absenter en quête de quelque aloi ni celui de sociabilités inutiles et énervantes. Définitivement, “Trop parler, c’est galvauder.” Dès le début, la musique accompagne l’œuvre et la nourrit.

Source abstraite qui n’appelle pas de récit et nous fait découvrir des émotions retenues, elle irrigue et hybride le pictural comme un pollen venu d’une plante voisine. En 1913, Apollinaire avait pressenti son rôle moderne : “On s’achemine vers un art entièrement nouveau qui sera à la peinture, telle qu’on l’avait envisagée jusqu’ici, ce que la musique est à la littérature 5.” Schoenberg qui sut à la fois être musicien et peintre écrivait à son ami Kandinsky “Il est clair que les gestes, les couleurs et les lumières ont été traités ici pareillement à des sons : qu’avec eux de la musique a été faite.” Chez Zurstrassen, de la peinture a été faite, riche d’offrandes musicales. de la musique les termes trouvant une correspondance dans la peinture : timbre, tempo, tonalité, couleur, réverbération, phrasé, forme, mouvement. L’exercice n’est pas si vain tant chez Zurstrassen la musique est omniprésente, jusqu’au moment de la peinture même. À cet instant elle disparaît pour ne plus vivre qu’au travers de l’acte qu’elle a préparé et qui s’accomplit dans le silence. Mais la lente montée rituelle et “artisanale” de préparation (tendre les toiles, préparer les couleurs) qui précède cet aboutissement transforme alors l’atelier en paysage sonore et l’emplit de musiques principalement contemporaines : musique répétitive qui se rapproche de la transe, free jazz, musique concrète, intervalles, silences, vibrations.

La conquête de l’identité Ceux qui méritent la liberté et la vie doivent chaque jour les conquérir. — Goethe

L’œuvre d’un artiste, l’identité par quoi il exprimera une singularité résulte d’un long cheminement ouvrant dans un premier temps sur plusieurs directions, à portée de vue et parfois déjà parcourues ; puis chemin faisant les rêveries seront d’un promeneur solitaire et le pas, la volonté et l’expression deviendront dans la profondeur du temps et de l’avancée l’empreinte d’un seul. Pour parvenir à cela, chacun sa manière, ses doutes, ses conquêtes. Zurstrassen suit sa voie, poussant les feux au plus fort, à chaque nouvelle étape. “Je suis plutôt un marathonien, j’ai de la réserve et je récupère bien pour aller jusqu’à la réussite.” Répondant un jour à un ami qui contemplait une toile en cours d’exécution et lui demandait “mais d’où vient cette lumière ?”, Braque alla chercher une toile ancienne et lui répondit en la lui montrant : “de là”. C’est qu’il faut parfois retourner loin pour comprendre une filiation, renouer les fils, apprendre d’œuvres laissées inabouties et pourtant conservées. Là peut gîter un futur, une origine en attente d’être perçue. ”Souvent, dit Zurstrassen, je revisite des virus que je n’ai pas développés 6.” Rien n’est vain de ce qui est entrepris ; chaque expérimentation, fut-elle le temps d’un passage ; chaque ajout, fut-il un retrait ou une blessure, apportent un bien nouveau, une résolution peut-être. L’identité se forge au long cours et chez le coloriste le plus savant passe par les éblouissements de l’ombre. “L’expérience très riche du noir et blanc m’a révélé mon identité.” Le premier engagement, l’abstraction, apparaît à peine comme un choix tant il a la force d’une évidence, d’une présence à la peinture et à l’art de son temps. “Si on ne représente pas les choses, il reste de la place pour le divin.” proclamait Mondrian. Zurstrassen perçoit d’abord cette sublimation dans une exultation : “Une vie où tout est permis, où je peux tout sentir, vivre ou avoir l’illusion de vivre toutes les extases.” Cette pleine liberté qui s’exerce dans le constant questionnement de la peinture en tant que totalité, éthique et esthétique, signifie littéralement ce qu’en écrivent les dictionnaires : “qui n’appartient pas à un maître“. Les toiles magnifiques des années 1986-1996 n’étaient pas de nature comme un inné jaillissant mais construites déjà. Elles annonçaient dans leur évolution les découvertes d’aujourd’hui et l’approche progressive d’un territoire. Elles révélaient aussi une virtuosité qui peut parfois courir seule. Le désir de créer qui laisse le corps sans repos, le plaisir, la jubilation mènent chez certains à une spirale sans fin, précipitant le créateur dans la reproduction et l’assise. Il n’en fut rien pour Zurstrassen qui sait toiser par le silence et la lenteur : “Je me méfie de mes états de lyrisme. […] Je peins à l’huile dans la rapidité 6. du geste. L’exécution peut être rapide mais le processus qui amène chaque toile est lent. […] Pour que le peintre puisse aborder sa propre peinture, il doit s’en dégager et, pour l’apprivoiser, il faut beaucoup de temps, comme s’il s’agissait d’une personne.

Tout notre système actuel va à l’encontre de cela.” Cette attention à l’évolution de son travail et à la connaissance qu’il peut lui-même en avoir est, elle aussi, inscrite dans la durée. Elle nécessite un recul qui vient au moment où insensiblement un cycle s’achève.

Il est possible alors de lire ce qui se termine mais ne se clôt pas et de s’engager dans une nouvelle séquence. À chaque fois se pose la question de la liberté. “Si tout est permis, rien n’est permis7” et il importe donc de distinguer ce qui, même dans l’emportement, dans le free du jazz, ou dans l’action de la peinture conjugue liberté et création ; une rigueur, un talent pour le moins. Il faut dire sa règle pour faire son jeu.

Pour aller plus loin “trouver de nouvelles grilles”, comme disait Dubuffet, Zurstrassen a su préserver la force irruptive de sa peinture et de son geste en la conjuguant avec des procédures nouvelles mettant en dialogue le temps et la vision dans une hybridation singulière. Il a su garder les translucidités des passages et des recouvrements, les contrastes et complémentarités de couleurs, les profondeurs apparues et les effleurements en surface. Naguère, ce rapport du vu et de l’entrevu laissait entière l’unité peinte et s’inscrivait dans une continuité historique. Lorsqu’il prit des ciseaux pour découper des formes de papier puis les coller sur la toile, on aurait pu croire encore à cette continuité et évoquer les cubistes ou Matisse. Il n’en fut rien car la pièce qu’il découpait s’apposait sur du déjà peint puis recevait dans l’exécution prolongée de nouvelles couches de peinture. À la fin, le décollement devenait révélation et donnait à voir un recel oublié, une irruption qui n’était plus du geste emporté mais d’enfouissement surgi et de forme découverte, un espace/temps de futur antérieur. Sens dessus dessous, il révèle des dessous qui soudain sans hiérarchie prennent le dessus, du temps piégé quand le dernier apparu n’est pas le dernier peint. Une population nouvelle vient vivre et habiter le tableau, y introduire des effets de surprise, de hasard ou d’aléatoire, se disposer sur un tamis, une grille de formes et y faire signes. Des strates de fond et de surface créent une profondeur de champ (presque une verticalité symbolique), un flux et un reflux (presque une horizontalité symbolique), une interpénétration et une complexité. Désordre apparent, ordre caché.

Si ces formes découpées ne sont pas une représentation et une figuration, elles témoignent cependant d’une incursion dans la peinture de Zurstrassen. Elles appartiennent à un jeu d’apparitions exogènes qui enluminent et introduisent du quotidien ou du légendaire, des grilles ou des formes décoratives vues en architecture ou lors de promenades urbaines, évocatrice de souvenirs et de familiarité. Puis la démarche s’est radicalisée – les ciseaux c’était encore la main qui parle – avec le recours à l’informatique et à l’estampage des papiers. Cette rencontre-là a créé un vrai changement de nature du travail du peintre. Accumulant un patrimoine de signes glanés dans des catalogues, des bases de données ou photographiés avec un téléphone mobile, Zurstrassen prend possession d’un vocabulaire épars à la mesure de la diversité culturelle de notre 7. monde. Encore fallait-il savoir transformer cet inventaire hétéroclite en une langue, une pâte vivante – la peinture – et occuper ainsi un territoire vierge. Simultanément à cette évolution, le tableau s’est fractionné par l’adjonction de formes plus ou moins géométriques, de blanc sur noir ou de couleur, puis par la division de la toile en parties distinctes créant des continents et des archipels ou encore des constellations faites de signes, de lacis et presque toujours d’un fond peint dans son expression première de couleur et de forme.

Cette hybridation et son expression sont exceptionnelles et si l’on peut trouver ainsi que l’a fait Harald Kunde des proximités et des affinités avec des peintres américains d’aujourd’hui, Philip Taaffe, Christopher Wool et surtout Jonathan Lasker, aucun cependant ne réunit l’ensemble des éléments de construction de Zurstrassen. Ses grid paintings dénotent une volonté d’introduire dans le travail précieux du peintre et d’un art inscrit dans une histoire savante quelque chose du vif d’une société parcourue par des expressions et communications autres, celles des patterns, des standards, des signes familiers et partagés par tous. Non pas le travail d’un folkloriste érudit, mais plutôt celui d’un créateur sensible à ce qui revient, mots de passe, airs légendaires, signes de vie et constitue une langue commune actuelle et intemporelle. Lorsque Bartok part à la recherche des musiques folkloriques et que le jazz reprend en les transformant à chaque fois d’inoubliables standards ; lorsque de jeunes artistes d’aujourd’hui revisitent un folklore urbain inventeur de gestes et de langages, c’est bien le même élan, la même altérité, le même impérieux désir d’espaces et de temps extérieurs, de machines à surprises, de lumières de fête, d’obstacles pour mieux jouer, mieux sauter. Des lambeaux de mémoire, les écritures d’un palimpseste sans fin, viennent faire trace et vie retrouvée dans un univers d’hospitalité. En 2009, avec A Beautiful Day, Zurstrassen poursuit et renforce cette présence aux mondes multiples que nous habitons et frayons.

Il installe sur cent mètres de long et quatre mètres de hauteur, dans la station de métro de la gare de l’Ouest à Bruxelles, une œuvre composée “de signes qui s’apprivoisent facilement”. Offerte à la vue et à la dilection de tous, elle donne lieu et fait échange.

L’exercice de la peinture n’a guère changé au cours des siècles, tant par la nature de l’espace de travail que par les matériaux et couleurs (quelles qu’aient été les évolutions chimiques, acryliques et autres) et les gestes de l’artiste se sont transmis sans grandes variations. Nous connaissons tous de vastes ateliers superbement équipés. Mais il y a dans celui de Zurstrassen une double appartenance par l’expression mixte d’un lieu de production technologique avancée et de présence de collaborateurs spécialisés d’une part, et d’autre part dans le silence et l’enfermement de l’espace et du temps de peinture, soudain rendus aux seuls forces et émois de la création. On y trouve l’usine et le cloître. Cette dualité correspond au choix fait d’introduire dans le tableau la pluralité

des signes de notre monde et de sa dimension polysémique par l’entremise souveraine de la peinture et de l’abstraction.

Mais c’est aussi l’histoire de deux vies résidant toutes deux dans l’antre et l’être du peintre, deux tentations de vie s’épousant, se rejetant et s’aimantant. L’une rappelle le torrent ou la montagne et l’autre la force des modèles et de leur circulation. Peut-on nouer les deux, les dresser et les tresser en un corps pictural chantant et dansant ?

Doit-on craindre en soi cette affluence de sève et cette énergie ou rejeter cet afflux de motifs classés et mis en réserve ? Le rêve, ce flot entrevu, se reconnaît-il et la fraîcheur vient-elle irriguer ce qui s’ordonne ? Zurstrassen nous donne la preuve magnifique de la réussite de cette aventure, possible parce que toujours incertaine, mais éclatante de force et d’invention. La fragilité en soi doit être préservée, elle alerte et stimule le marathonien. “Mes plus belles années sont à venir... Il y a en moi un feu. Tout est à faire.”8

In a Silent Way – In klangvoller Stille François Barré Da ich weder Kritiker noch Historiker bin, möchte ich hier die Betrachtungsweise des Wanderers und Bewunderers – ja des Schwärmers – wiedergeben die, genährt und geformt im Laufe von Gesprächen und Begegnungen, die Weite der Räume und die Formen des Wesentlichen nach und nach erkannte. Ich werde deshalb keine wissenschaftliche und geordnete Analyse über den Sinn, die Entstehung, und die Stellung innerhalb der Kunstszene des Werkes von Yves Zurstrassen führen, sondern vielmehr versuchen, in wenig geordneter Manier, Eindrücke, Emotionen, Freuden und Fragen wiederzugeben.

Den Traum verlassen Wir verfügen über die Kunst, um nicht an der Wirklichkeit zu sterben. — Nietzsche

Yves Zurstrassen beginnt sein virtuelles Leben als Maler lange bevor er sich an die Arbeit macht. Mit zwanzig träumt er seinen‚ kretischen Traum’; gefüllt mit kostbaren Essenzen aus Licht und Farben, trägt er ihn wie abwartend in sich, als Antwort auf noch nicht gestellte Fragen. Zehn Jahre später wird im bewusst, dass er diese Vision in seinen letzten Arbeiten (1986-1996) verkörpert hat, wenn er sagt: „Diese [Arbeiten] sind die Umsetzung eines Traumes, eines wachen Traumes. Aber ich denke bei der Arbeit nicht daran, all’ dies ist unbewusst [....] Der Traum ist wie ein zeitgleich laufendes Leben, eine Art bildliches Vorgefühl [....], wie wenn man meine Bewegungen während meines ganzen Lebens filmen würde. 1 “ In „die Verleugnung des Heiligen Petrus“ schreibt Baudelaire geheimnisvoll: „Wahrlich, was mich betrifft, so verlasse ich zufrieden eine Welt, in der die Tat nicht die Schwester des Traumes ist“. Es gibt viele Auslegungen um den Zwiespalt zwischen dem nach Baudelaire’s eigenen Worten ‚natürlichen Traum’ und dem ‚absurden Traum’ zu entwirren. Im Gegensatz zu Gérard de Nerval kümmert Baudelaire keineswegs die Absicht, den „Erguss des Traumes auf das wirkliche Leben“ aufzuzeichnen; er ist vielmehr darauf bedacht, den Traum von der Wirklichkeit zu trennen und sie beide als getrennte Welten zu begreifen2. Diese Trennung erlebt wohl jeder schöpferisch Tätige.

Wie und weshalb sie abschaffen? Wie wohl „den Traum behalten und den Schlaf zurückdrängen“ 3? Oder ihn beherrschen um sich von ihm – ohne ihn zu verraten – lösen zu können? Ihn bändigen und neu entstehen lassen? Diese Leben, die der Tat und die des Traumes, teilen sich schwesterlich auf gleichlaufenden Wegen Leidenschaft und Vernunft, ohne sich jemals zu treffen. Sie rufen allerdings nach einem Schicksal, einer Erfüllung in der die Kunst nicht mehr die Erfüllung eines Traumes ist, sondern sich endlich zur ungebundenen, selbstbestimmenden Freiheit eines Märchens öffnet.

Das Handeln zählt Ich wache morgens mit einer geheimen Freude auf, Ich sehe das Licht mit einer Art Entzückung.

„Der Künstler verändert die Welt indem er seinen Körper ausleiht“ schrieb Maurice Merleau-Ponty 4. Zurstrassen empfindet die Malerei durch ständigen körperlichen Einsatz, wie jemand der sich hineinwirft oder mitgerissen wird. Dies war so seit Beginn 1. Die meisten Zitate, ausser wenn anders angegeben, sind einem Gespräch zwischen Yves Zurstrassen und Claude Lorent entnommen welches anlässlich einer Ausstellung in der Galerie Vedovi in Brüssel 1996 stattfand.

seiner Arbeit, die man als lyrisch beschreiben könnte. Seine Strahlkraft, seine Fähigkeit das Licht aufzunehmen, sich von ihm durchdringen und es strahlen zu lassen bilden ein Umfeld durch die Komplizenschaft mit den durchstreiften Himmeln. Er nimmt die Lichter wahr wie andere die Breitengrade pedantisch benennen und er kann in seiner Malerei Norden und Süden, Zartes und Grausames in einer tosenden Zeitenfolge ausdrücken. Die Farbe, ja die Farben sind Licht und haben teil an den wechselseitigen Beziehungen und Strukturen. So fließen gestische Weite, das Licht der Farben sowie die immer präsente Musik in seinen Bildern zusammen; man könnte es auch die Begabung zum Glück nennen.

Die Bilder der Ausstellung 1996, meistens aus sich bedeckenden und sich begegnenden weitläufigen Flechtwerken bestehend, schaffen große abstrakte Landschaften – reine Freude ohne Darstellung. Erfasst in Schwingungen und Wendungen, schmelzen und ergießen sie sich, bewirken Transparenz: eine Freude des beglückten Körpers, strahlend und berauschend. Es ist wie ein immer neubeginnender Strom von wiederkehrenden Themen, das Fehlen einer bestimmenden Mitte gibt den Komponenten Kraft und Eigenständigkeit, die irgendwie durchschimmernden verborgenen Tiefen und die strahlenden Flächen scheinen in ein Inneres zurückzukehren, eine einladende Tiefe.

Wenn wir hier an Willem de Kooning denken, dann weil er schrieb: „ der Körper ist der Grund warum die Ölmalerei erfunden wurde“…

Diese Zeit des Brodelns und der persönlichen Entwicklung verlangt ein tiefes Verlangen und den Sinn für Zusammenhänge. Vor der großen Reise gilt es, seine Familie zu besuchen und die Erdkunde zu studieren. Als Autodidakt und Experimentator scheut Zurstrassen keine noch so große Herausforderung. Er kann lieben und kennt seine Väter, Brüder und Vettern. So kann er sowohl in der Anstrengung wie in im täglichen Spaß sich selbst sein und sich gleichzeitig entwickeln. „Meine Arbeit liegt eher in der Beständigkeit meiner eigenen Erfahrung“. Der Einsatz ist gründlich und beharrlich; täglich auf’s Neue von morgens bis abends im geschützten Raum des Ateliers, einem Raum aller Gefahren. Einige knappe Titel, wie „Fragments“ (Splitter), „Variation“, „Ouverture“(Öffnung), „Decollage“, „Rêverie“ (Träumerei), oder „Jazz“ kennzeichneten früher die fertigen Arbeiten. Seit ungefähr zehn Jahren ist das Datum, im Ablauf der Stunden und der Tage wie auf einem Abreißkalender, der Titel der Werke. Wie auf einer bis zur Erschöpfung geführten Treibjagd entstehen jährlich mehr als 300 Werke, bis heute einige Tausend.

Der Botschafter wird zur Botschaft und der Maler zur Malerei. Wer treibt wen in diesem Wettlauf? Welche Entscheidung oder welcher Rausch? Dabei gibt’s weder Vorbilder noch Förderer, weder Kreise noch Zirkel. Zurstrassen arbeitet alleine; er läuft weder Achtungserfolgen hinterher, noch sucht er unnötige und zermürbende Geselligkeiten.

Es ist beschlossene Sache: „zuviel Reden ist Vergeudung“.

In klangvoller Stille

Seit Beginn begleitet und fördert die Musik das Schaffen. Als abstrakte Quelle die keiner Beschreibung bedarf lässt sie verhaltene Ergriffenheit entdecken; sie nährt und mischt das Malerische auf, so wie der Blütenstaub einer benachbarten Pflanze. Apollinaire hatte diese aktuelle Funktion im Jahre 1913 vorausgeahnt: „wir sind auf dem Wege zu einer völlig neuen Kunst, die für die Malerei, so wie wir sie bis heute gesehen haben, das sein wird , was die Musik für die Literatur darstellt“ 5. So kann man im Wortschatz der Musik Ausdrücke finden, die denen der Malerei entsprechen: Klangfarbe, tempo, Tonart, Farbe, Wiederhall, Phrasierung, Form, Bewegung. Eine solche Übung ist nicht unnütz, so sehr ist die Musik bei Zurstrassen allgegenwärtig, bis in seine Malerei hinein. Unlängst verschwand sie beim Malvorgang und lebte nur mehr in den Vorbereitungen, der Malvorgang geschah in der Stille. Aber die rituelle und „handwerklich“ langsame Steigerung in der Vorbereitung (Leinwand spannen, Farben vorbereiten), die der Ausführung vorausging, hatte das Atelier in eine klangvolle Landschaft verwandelt und füllte es mit vorwiegend zeitgenössischer Musik: eine repetitive Musik, die fast zur Ekstase führt, free jazz, Konkrete Musik, Pausen, Stille, Schwingungen.

Heute ist die Musik ab den ersten Überlegungen einer zukünftigen Arbeit bis zu den letzten Gesten des Malvorgangs zugegen, unablässig und energisch, immer gegenwärtig als Teil des ausgeführten Werkes. Der Musiker und Maler Schönberg schrieb seinem Freund Kandinsky: „ Es ist selbstverständlich, dass die Gesten, die Farben und das Licht hier gleich wie Töne behandelt wurden: mit ihnen wurde Musik gemacht“. Bei Zurstrassen entstand so die Malerei, reich an musikalischen Opfergaben und im Einklang mit ihr.

Das Werk eines Künstlers, die Identität mit der er seine Eigenart ausdrückt, ergibt sich aus einem langen Wandern, das zu Beginn viele Richtungen öffnet, erkennbare und manchmal schon begangene. Dann wird der Weg zum Traum des einsamen Wanderers und der Schritt, der Wille und der Ausdruck werden in der Tiefe der Zeit und des Weiterkommens zu einem eigenständigen Signum. Und jeder hat seine Art, seine Zweifel und seine Kämpfe um dies zu erreichen. Zurstrassen folgt seinem Weg, in jeder Phase das Feuer neu entfachend. „ Ich bin ein Marathonläufer; um weiterzukommen und um mich zu finden.“ Als einmal ein Freund – er betrachtete gerade ein entstehendes Gemälde – Braque fragte, „woher denn dieses Licht komme? “, holte Braque eine alte Arbeit hervor und antwortete : „von hier“. Manchmal muss man eben weit zurückgehen um eine Verbindung herzustellen, den Faden wieder aufzugreifen und um aus unfertig gelassenen aber aufbewahrten Arbeiten zu lernen. Darin kann die Zukunft wohnen, ein Anfang der darauf wartet, aufgespürt zu werden. „Oft besuche ich wieder Keimzellen, die ich nicht entwickelt habe“ 6, sagt Zurstrassen. Keine Handlung ist unnütz; jeder noch so begrenzte Versuch; jeder Zusatz, und sei es ein Weglassen oder eine Blessur, erbringt neues Gutes, vielleicht ein Entschluss. Die Identität wird auf großer Fahrt geschmiedet und der Kolorist lernt das meiste aus dem Funkeln des Schattens. „Die sehr reiche Erfahrung des schwarz und weiß hat mir meine Identität offenbart.“ Die erste Entscheidung, sich der Abstraktion zuzuwenden, erscheint kaum als Wahl, so überzeugend ist sie und so präsent ist sie in der aktuellen Kunst und Malerei.

„Sobald man die Dinge nicht darstellt, bleibt Platz für das Göttliche“ verkündete Mondrian. Zurstrassen entdeckt diese Sublimierung zuerst in einer Glückseligkeit: „ ein Leben wo alles erlaubt ist, wo ich alles fühlen, leben kann bzw. die Illusion habe, alle Ekstasen zu leben.“ Diese vollständige Freiheit, die Malerei als Ganzes, als moralische und ästhetische Instanz ständig hinterfragen, bedeutet buchstäblich das was in den Nachschlagewerken zu lesen ist: „das nicht zu einem Meister gehört“. Die prächtigen Bilder der Jahre 86-96 waren von ihrer Eigenart her keine sprudelnde Geburt, sondern schon aufgebaut. In ihrer Entwicklung kündigten sie die heutigen Entdeckungen an und das fortschreitende Annähern einer Richtung. Sie verrieten ebenfalls eine Kunstfertigkeit, die manchmal alleine fließen kann. Der ruhelose Schaffensdrang, die Freude, der Jubel führen einige in eine Endlosspirale die den Künstler in die Nachahmung und zu dem Ausgangspunkt zurückstürzen. Das war für Zurstrassen nicht der Fall, er kann still und langsam begutachten: „Ich hüte mich vor meinen gefühlsseligen Stimmungen [....] ich male mit Öl in rascher Bewegung. Die Ausführung kann schnell sein, aber der zu jedem Bild führende Vorgang ist langsam.[....] Damit der Maler seine eigene Malerei in Angriff nehmen kann, muss er sich davon befreien und um sie zu beherrschen, braucht er viel Zeit, wie bei einem Menschen. Unser ganzes aktuelles System läuft dem zuwider.“ Diese Aufmerksamkeit für die Entwicklung seiner Arbeit und das persönliche Wissen darüber ist ebenfalls in der Dauer festgehalten. Sie benötigt eine Distanz, die unmerklich am Ende eines Zyklus aufkommt. Dann kann man lesen, was ausklingt, aber nicht zu Ende ist und in eine neue Folge eintreten. Und jedes Mal stellt sich die Frage nach der Freiheit. „Wenn alles erlaubt ist, ist nichts erlaubt“.7 Selbst in der Erregung des free vom Jazz und bei dem Malvorgang ist es deshalb wichtig, die Dinge auseinander zuhalten, die Freiheit und Schaffen vereinen. Und dies verlangt mindestens Disziplin und Talent. Man muss seine Regeln beherrschen, um sein Werk zu gestalten.

Um weiter voran zu kommen, „neue Schablonen zu finden, wie Dubuffet sagte“, hat Zurstrassen seine stürmische Kraft in seiner Malerei und seinen Gesten beibehalten können und sie mit neuen Techniken vereinigt, in dem er die Zeit und die Vision in einer eigentümlichen Kreuzung verband. So konnte er die Lichtdurchlässigkeit der Übergänge und der Überlagerungen, die Kontrast- und Komplementärfarben, die auftauchenden Tiefen und die flüchtigen Oberflächen beibehalten. Früher lies das Verhältnis zwischen Gesehenem und Erahntem die Einheit des Bildes unangetastet und lag im Rahmen der geschichtlichen Kontinuität. Als er begann, Formen aus Papier zu schneiden und diese dann auf die Leinwand zu kleben, konnte man von dieser Kontinuität noch ausgehen und auf die Kubisten oder Matisse hinweisen. Dem war nicht so, denn das ausgeschnittene Papier wurde einem farbigen Hintergrund aufgelegt und erhielt dann in der weiteren Ausführung neue Farbschichten. Am Ende geriet die Decollage zur Offenbarung und gab den Blick frei auf verdrängtem Verborgenem, eine Eruption, nicht von heftiger Gestik, sondern von vergrabenen Schätzen und freigelegten Formen; kurz, ein Ort der vollendeten Zukunft. So gewinnen, völlig durcheinander, Hintergründe plötzlich ohne Rangordnung die Oberhand, eine Zeitenfalle, wenn die zuletzt erscheinende Fläche 7. nicht die zuletzt gemalte ist. Neue Individuen leben und wohnen im Bild, bringen Überraschungs- und Zufallseffekte, gliedern sich auf einem Sieb, einem Formengitter und machen sich kenntlich. Grund- und Oberflächenschichten schaffen ein tiefes Feld (fast eine senkrechte Symbolik), Ebbe und Flut (fast eine waagerechte Symbolik), Verflechtung und Vielschichtigkeit. Sichtbare Unordnung, verborgene Ordnung.

Obschon diese ausgeschnittenen Formen weder etwas darstellen noch abbilden, zeugen sie doch von einem Eingriff in die Malerei Zurstrassen’s. Sie gehören einer Serie von von außen kommender Gebilden, die das Alltägliche und Fabelhafte einbringen und kolorieren, Gitter oder schmückende Formen, wie man sie in der Architektur oder bei Stadtwanderungen sieht und die Erinnerungen und Bekanntes wachrufen. War das Schneiden bislang Handarbeit, so wird der Arbeitsablauf durch das Verwenden der Informatik und des Papierstanzens noch rücksichtsloser. Diese Verbindung veränderte unbestreitbar die Arbeitsweise des Künstlers. Im Anhäufen eines wahren Schatzes von aufgefundenen Mustern in Katalogen, Datenbasen oder mittels Mobiltelefon, erwirbt Zurstrassen einen nicht zusammenhängenden Wortschatz der der kulturellen Vielfalt unserer Welt entspricht. Allerdings musste diese zusammengewürfelte Liste in eine Sprache, einen lebendigen Teig – in Malerei – umgewandelt werden und so Neuland betreten. Zeitgleich zu dieser Entwicklung teilte sich die Leinwand auf: einmal durch das Hinzufügen von schwarz-weißen oder bunten, mehr oder weniger geometrischen Formen, zum anderen durch getrennte Flächen, ganze Kontinente und Inselgruppen oder aber Sternbilder aus Zeichen und Netzen schaffend. Wobei der Hintergrund fast immer in der ursprünglichen Gestaltung von Form und Farbe blieb.

Diese Verbindung und ihr Ausdruck sind außergewöhnlich. Und wenn man wie Harald Kunde Nähe und Verwandtschaften mit heutigen amerikanischen Malern wie Philip Taaffe, Christopher Wool und vor allem Jonathan Lasker findet, vereinigt doch keiner die Gesamtheit der Bestandteile wie Zurstrassen. Seine grid paintings zeugen von der Absicht, in die wertvolle Arbeit des Malers und in die wissenschaftliche Kunstgeschichte etwas von der Lebendigkeit eines Gesellschaft einfließen zu lassen, durchströmt von Pattern und anderen Verbindungen, d.h. die von allen übernommenen Muster, Standards und familiären Zeichen. Dies ist nicht die Arbeit eines gelehrigen Volkskundlers, sondern eher eines einfühlsamen Schaffenden für den Losungsworte, sagenhafte Melodien und andere Lebenszeichen eine gemeinsame aktuelle wie unvergängliche Sprache Ausdrucksweise bedeuten. Als Bartok sich auf die Suche nach Folkloremusik aufmachte und der Jazz diese in unvergessliche Standards überträgt; wenn heutzutage junge Künstler städtische Folklore als Quelle von Gesten und Sprachen wiederentdecken, dann ist das derselbe Elan, derselbe Drang nach Neuem, dieselbe zwingende Sehnsucht nach neuen Zeiten und Horizonten, nach Überraschungsautomaten, nach

Festtagsbeleuchtung, nach Hindernissen um besser spielen, besser aufsteigen zu können. Erinnerungsfetzen und unendliche Schriften von wiederbenutzten Pergamenten kommen zum Vorschein und finden neues Leben in einem gastfreundlichen Universum.

Mit A Beautiful Day in 2009 schreibt Zurstrassen diesen Zauber verschiedener Welten fort und verstärkt ihn noch. Diesen Zauber der von uns bewohnten und gehegten verschiedenen Welten treibt Zurstrassen weiter in 2009 mit A Beautiful Day und verstärkt ihn noch. In einer Haltestelle der Untergrundbahn im Brüsseler Westbahnhof bringt er ein hundert Meter langes und vier Meter hohes Werk an mit dem Titel „Zeichen, die sich leicht zähmen (lassen)“. Als Angebot an alle zum schauen und verehren schafft es einen Ort zum Austausch. In Bezug auf die Malfläche, Werkstoffe und Farben (ungeachtet der chemischen Entwicklungen wie Acryl und andere), hat sich das Malen in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten kaum verändert und die Gesten des Malers wurden ohne große Abweichungen übertragen. Wir alle kennen weiträumige, prächtig ausgestattete Ateliers. Aber das von Zurstrassen hat einen doppelte Zugehörigkeit dank einer Mischung von Merkmalen: einerseits eine technisch hochstehende Produktionsstätte mit fachlich versierten Mitarbeitern und andererseits die Stille und die Begrenzung von Raum und Zeit des Malens – jählings den alleinigen Kräften und Anspannungen der Kreation überlassen. Man trifft auf die Fabrik und die Klausur. Diese Widersprüchlichkeit entspricht der Wahl, in das Bild eine Vielzahl von Zeichen dieser Welt aufzunehmen, sowie seinem vielschichtigen Rang durch höchste Malerei und Abstraktion.

Aber dies ist auch die Geschichte zweier Leben die im Innersten und im Sein des Künstlers wohnen, zwei Lebensverlockungen, die sich verbinden, ablehnen und gegenseitig anziehen. Das eine ähnelt dem Sturzbach oder der Gebirgswelt, das andere die Kraft der Formen und ihr Kreislauf. Kann man beide verbinden, sie abrichten und sie zu einer singenden und tanzenden Darstellung verflechten? Muss man diesen Ansturm von Kraft und diese Dynamik fürchten oder soll man diesen Zulauf von geordneten und zurückgehaltenen Motiven verwerfen? Der Traum, dieser flüchtige Strom, erkennt er sich wieder und wird seine Lebendigkeit das Geordnete durchbluten? Zurstrassen beweist uns auf prachtvoller Weise den Erfolg eines solchen Abenteuers, er ist möglich weil er immer ungewiss, aber strahlend von Kraft und Erfindungsgeist bleibt. Die Zerbrechlichkeit an sich muss bestehen bleiben, sie schreckt und stachelt den Marathonläufer auf. „Meine besten Jahre sind vor mir… in mir steckt Feuer… alles ist zu tun“.8

In a Silent Way François Barré Being neither an art critic nor a historian, I shall express here the opinion of the visitor and the amateur — one who enjoys — perceiving the scope of territories and forms of beings as the encounters and exchanges dictate, and in so doing nurture and consolidate myself. I shall not therefore undertake any scholarly or structured analysis of the meaning, origin, affiliation and place of Yves Zurstrassen’s oeuvre on the art scene. Instead and in a rather unstructured manner, I shall attempt to recall here several impressions and emotions, pleasures and questions.

Emerging from a Dream We have art in order not to die of the truth. — Nietzsche

Yves Zurstrassen virtually began his life as a painter – he was only twenty at the time – long before setting down to work, following a “Cretan dream” filled with a precious substance, light and colour, which he carried like an expectation and an answer to a question that had not yet been asked. He was to have the feeling of embodying this vision ten years later, stating about his latest paintings (1986-1996): “They are the transcription of a dream, a waking dream. But when I work, I never think; everything is subconscious. [...] The dream is like a parallel life, a sort of visual premonition [...], as if someone were filming my movement throughout my lifetime.”1 In “Saint Peter’s Denial”, Baudelaire enigmatically wrote: “As for myself, certainly, I would be satisfied to leave. A world where action is not sister to the dream.” There are numerous exegeses explaining the distinction, identified by Baudelaire, between the natural dream and the absurd dream. “Unlike Gérard de Nerval, Baudelaire is little concerned with painting the outpouring of dreams into real life but is instead mindful to separate dream from reality and to see them as two separate worlds.”2 Probably every creator experiences this separation. How and why should it be abolished? How can we “retain the dream whilst eliminating sleep?”3 or harness it so as to detach it without betraying it and then tame it, before placing it in the world? These lives, of action and dream, sisters advancing along parallel paths without ever meeting up, share the same impulses and reasons and aspire to a destiny, a conquest so that finally art will no longer be the accomplishment of a dream, but will open up to supreme freedom from dishonesty.

“By lending his body to the world, the painter changes the world into paintings,” wrote Maurice Merleau-Ponty.4 Zurstrassen experiences painting through a physical engagement with each instant, just as we might hurl ourselves into something or get carried away. This was true even of the earliest stages of his work, which could be described as lyrical. There is a power, a solarity within him, a receptiveness to light, to be penetrated by and to radiate it. Thus he establishes a context, through complicity with the heavens that the light has travelled across. He perceives lights just as other, meticulous 1. people speak of latitudes. In his painting he knows how to express the North and the South, gentleness and violence, in a tumultuous time sequence.

Colour – for colours are light – contributes to his connections and constructions. The gesture and its scope, this light and these colours then converge in his canvases, along with the ever-present music and what we could call an aptitude for happiness. The paintings from the 1996 exhibition, often consisting of vast traceries that overlap and answer to one another, form great, abstract landscapes – pure pleasure without representation – caught up in a circling movement which brings about transparencies, fusions and effusions; it is the pleasure of the exultant, radiant, Dionysian body. We find here an endlessly-renewed flood of choruses, repeated time and again, an absence of centrality, giving the details power and utter autonomy, hidden depths which nevertheless show through and dazzling surfaces, which appear to lead inwards, to an inviting interiority. If we are then reminded of Willem de Kooning, it is because he wrote, “Flesh was the reason why oil painting was invented.”

This stage of passion and training oneself requires a boundless longing and fondness for close contact. Before the grand tour, one has to make family visits and learn geography. As a self-taught experimenter, Zurstrassen does not fear great trees. He knows how to love and knows his ancestors, siblings and cousins. Thus he can be himself and invent himself in daily effort and pleasure. “My work places me more in the continuity of my own experience”. The commitment is intense and continuous, resumed each day in the early hours and undertaken until the evening in the protected space of his studio, the space of all dangers. A few succinct titles, “Fragments”, “Variation”, “Ouverture”, “Décollage”, “Rêverie” and “Jazz” previously used to qualify the finished works. For a decade or so, the title has become the date, as the hours and days pass in one, long almanac. He has produced more than one thousand works to date, in a search pursued to exhaustion. The messenger becomes the message and the painter the painting.

Which one leads the other in this race and with what deliberation, what intoxication?

There is no search for models or protectors; there is no circle or cenacle. Zurstrassen works alone, having neither the taste for heading off in search of some kind of respectability nor for pointless, irritating social engagements. All in all, “To speak too much is to overwork.” Music accompanies and nurtures his work from the outset. It is an abstract source which does not summon up any story and makes us discover repressed emotions; it irrigates and hybridises the pictorial work just like pollen from a nearby plant. In 1913, Apollinaire had foreseen its modern role: “We are moving towards an entirely new art which will stand, with respect to painting as envisioned heretofore, as music stands to literature.”5 Schoenberg, who managed to be both a musician and a painter, wrote to his friend Kandinsky: “Clearly the gestures, colours and light have 5. been treated here like sounds: music has been made with them.” Zurstrassen creates painting that abounds with musical offerings. In the vocabulary of music, we can find terms which have a connection with painting: resonance, tempo, tonality, colour, reverberation, phrasing, form and movement. This is not such a pointless exercise, for music is omnipresent in Zurstrassen’s work, even at the moment of painting. At this instant it disappears and only lives on through the act it has prepared and which is accomplished in silence. But the slow, ritual, “hand-crafted” ascent of the preparation (stretching canvases, preparing the colours) preceding this culmination then transforms the studio into a soundscape and fills it mainly with contemporary music: repetitive music reminiscent of a trance, free jazz, concrete music, intervals, silences and vibrations.

The Conquest of Identity Only those who must conquer them every day deserve freedom as well as life. — Goethe

An artist’s oeuvre, the identity through which he expresses individuality, is the result of a long journey that initially opens up several routes, which are visible and have sometimes already been travelled. Along the way, the daydreams will be those of a solitary wanderer; then as time passes and the journey progresses, the pace, determination and expression will form the imprint of a single person. Each has their own way to reach this point, accompanied by their doubts and conquests. Zurstrassen follows his path, speeding up the process as much as he can, at each new stage. “I am more of a marathon runner, I have stamina and I recover quickly so as to go on and succeed.” One day, when a friend of Braque was contemplating an unfinished canvas, he asked the artist, “But where does this light come from?” Braque searched out one of his older canvases and pointing to it, replied, “From here.” For sometimes one has to go back a long way to understand a filiation, to tie up the threads, to learn from works that have been left unfinished and yet have been preserved. A future may have run aground here, an origin may be waiting to be perceived. “I often return to viruses I haven’t cultivated,” 6 says Zurstrassen. Nothing is undertaken in vain; every experiment counts, even if it is a transitional moment; every addition, be it a retreat or an injury, contributes a new asset, perhaps a resolution. The identity is forged over the long term and even the most skilful colourist passes through the blinding effects of shadow. “The great wealth of experience of black and white revealed my identity to me.” The first commitment, to abstraction, arose scarcely as a choice, such was the power of its self-evidence and presence in painting and the art of its time. “When one does not represent things, a place remains for the divine,” proclaimed Mondrian. Zurstrassen first perceived this sublimation in a state of exultation: “A life in which everything is permitted, where I can feel everything, live or have the impression of experiencing all ecstasies.” This utter freedom to constantly question the totality, ethics and aesthetics of painting literally signifies what the dictionaries state: “the absence of slave status”. The magnificent canvases from 1986-1996 were not so much an outpouring of something innate, but were already constructed. Their evolution announced today’s discoveries and the progressive approach towards a territory.

They also revealed a virtuosity that can sometimes operate alone. The desire to create which leaves the body unrested, the pleasure and jubilation draw certain artists into a never-ending spiral, hastening the creator into reproduction and stability. This was in 6. no way the case for Zurstrassen, who knows how to remain defiant through silence and slowness: “I am suspicious of my states of lyricism. [...] I paint in oil with rapid movements. The execution may be fast but the process which leads to each canvas is slow. [...] In order for the painter to be able to consider his own painting, he has to distance himself from it and it takes a long time to win it over, as though it were a person. Our entire current system is opposed to this.” His attention to the evolution of his work and his own potential knowledge of it is also a drawn-out process. It requires a distance which comes at the moment when imperceptibly a cycle is completed. It is then possible to interpret what is ending but is unfinished and to enter into a new sequence. The question of freedom is posed each time. “If everything is permitted, nothing is permitted.” 7 Even in the passion, in the free of jazz or in the action of painting, it is therefore important to distinguish what it is that unites freedom and creation; a rigour, or at least a talent. One has to state one’s rule in order to place one’s bet.

In order to go further “to find new grids,” as Dubuffet said, Zurstrassen has managed to preserve the irruptive force of his painting and his gesture by combining it with new procedures that bring time and vision into dialogue in a unique hybridisation. He has managed to preserve the translucences of layers of colour and concealments, the contrasts and complementarities of colours, the revealed depths and the light touches on the surface. Previously, this relationship of what is seen and what is glimpsed left the painted unit whole and formed part of a historic continuum. When he took scissors to cut out forms in paper and stuck them onto the canvas, we might have been forgiven for still believing in this continuity or making references to the cubists and Matisse.

This was in no way the case, as the piece he cut out was affixed onto what had already been painted and in the subsequent execution was then covered by further coats of paint. At the end, the removal turned into a revelation, divulging some forgotten, illicit possession, an irruption no longer from the passionate gesture but from burial, brought into the light, a discovered form, a future anterior space/time. Upside down, it reveals undersides which suddenly and without hierarchy gain the upper hand, trapped time when the last to appear is not the last to be painted. A new population moves in and inhabits the painting, introducing surprising, chance or random effects there, arranging itself on a sieve, a grid of forms and making signs there. The underlying and surface strata create a depth of field (an almost symbolic verticality), a flow and ebb (an almost symbolic horizontality), an interpenetration and a complexity. Apparent disorder is combined with hidden order.

Whilst these cut-out forms are not a representation or figuration, they nevertheless bear witness to an incursion into Zurstrassen’s painting. They belong to a sequence of exogenous apparitions that illuminate and introduce everyday or legendary elements, grids or decorative forms seen in architecture or during walks in the city, evoking memories and familiarity. Then his approach became more radical – for scissors meant that his hands were still speaking – through a recourse to computer technology and the stamping of paper. This encounter brought about a real change in the nature of the painter’s work.

Accumulating a heritage of signs gleaned from catalogues and databases, or photographed with his mobile phone, Zurstrassen took possession of a disparate vocabulary commensurate to the cultural diversity of our world. But he still had to discover how to transform this heteroclite inventory into a language, a living paste – painting – and thereby occupy a virgin territory. At the same time as this evolution, the painting became fragmented through the addition of more or less geometric forms, of white on black or of colour, and later through the division of the canvas into separate parts, creating continents and archipelagos or even constellations made up of signs and mazes, almost always with a background painted in its primary expression of colour and form. This hybridisation and its expression are exceptional and although like Harald Kunde we may find proximities and affinities with the contemporary American painters Philip Taafe, Christopher Wool and above all Jonathan Lasker, none of them combine all of Zurstrassen’s construction elements. As we can see from his grid paintings, he is determined to introduce into the painter’s precious work and into an art that belongs to a complex history something of the intensity of a society traversed by other expressions and communications, those of patterns, standards and familiar signs shared by everyone. This is not the work of an erudite folklorist, but instead that of a creator who is sensitive to what returns, passwords, legendary airs and signs of life, one who develops a current, timeless, shared language. When Bartok set off in search of folk music and when jazz adopted them, transforming them each time with unforgettable standards, when today’s young artists revisit urban folklore that invents gestures and languages, it is the same impulse, the same otherness, the same imperious desire for exterior times and spaces, machines generating surprises, party lights and obstacles in order to play and jump better. Snatches of memory, the writings of a never-ending palimpsest come and leave a trace and life anew in a world of hospitality.

A Beautiful Day, 2009 Gare de l’Ouest, Brussels (BE)

In 2009 with A Beautiful Day, Zurstrassen pursued and reinforced this presence of multiple worlds in which we live and make our way. On an area one hundred metres long and four metres high in the Gare de l’Ouest underground station in Brussels, he installed a work composed “of easily manageable signs.” Offered to the gaze and delectation of all, it brings about and engages in an exchange. The exercise of painting has scarcely changed over the centuries, both in terms of the nature of the workspace and the materials and colours (irrespective of their chemical, acrylic and other evolutions), and the gestures of the artist have been handed down with no great variations.

We are all familiar with vast, superbly equipped studios. But in Zurstrassen’s there is a twofold identity, through the combined expression of a high-tech production place and the presence of specialist assistants on the one hand, and in the silence and enclosure of the painting space and time on the other, suddenly abandoned solely to the forces

and chaos of creation. We find here the factory and the cloister. This duality reflects his choice to introduce into painting the plurality of the signs of our world and its polysemous dimension, through the supreme mediation of painting and abstraction.

But it is also the story of two lives, both residing in the sanctum and the person of the painter; two temptations of life, espousing, rejecting and magnetising each other. The one is reminiscent of the torrent or the mountain and the other the power of models and their circulation. Can we tie the two together, draw up and weave them into a singing, dancing pictorial body? Should we fear in itself this abundance of vigour and this energy or reject this flood of classified motifs placed in reserve? Does the dream, this glimpsed flood, recognise itself? Does the freshness irrigate what is ordered? Zurstrassen offers us the magnificent proof of the success of this venture, which is possible because it is always uncertain, but blazing with power and invention. The fragility in itself has to be preserved, as it alerts and stimulates the marathon runner. “My best years are to come... There is a fire inside me. Everything remains to be done.”8

Francis Feidler est né à Malmedy en 1950.

Professeur des arts plastiques à l’Athénée de Bütgenbach entre 1974 et 1990, il réalise à partir 1977 comme artiste une œuvre conceptuelle autour de l’idée d’“ELASTICOMMUNICATION”, une création linguistique qu’il invente pour ses installations, objets, collages, dessins et installations, maintenues en équilibre par des forces physiques de traction et de compression. Suivent des expositions en galeries et musées en Belgique, Allemagne, Hollande et France, dont le Prix de la Jeune Peinture au Palais des Beaux-Arts à Bruxelles en 1981.

Geboren in Malmedy in 1950, war von 1974 bis 1990 Kunsterzieher am Gymnasium von Bütgenbach. Ab 1977 verwirklicht er als Künstler konzeptuelle Arbeiten rund um die Idee der „ELASTIKOMMUNIKATION“, eine eigene Wortschöpfung für seine Installationen, Objekte, Kollagen und Zeichnungen, in denen durch physische Zug- und Spannkräfte ein Gleichgewicht entsteht.

Francis Feidler was born in Malmedy in 1950. He taught visual arts at the secondary school in Bütgenbach from 1974 until 1990, and in 1977 he also began working as an artist, on a conceptual oeuvre associated with the notion of “ELASTICOMMUNICATION”, a linguistic term which he coined for his installations, objects, collages, drawings and installations, maintained in balance by the physical forces of traction and compression. This was followed by exhibitions in galleries and museums in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and France, and notably the Young Painting Prize from the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1981.

Fondateur de l’IKOB (Internationales Kunstzentrum Ostbelgien) en 1993, qui se nomme à partir de 2005 IKOB Musée d’Art Contemporain Eupen (musée de la Communauté Germanophone de Belgique), Francis Feidler est en même temps son directeur et curateur.

Yves Zurstrassen – In a Silent Way Réaliser ce livre avec Yves Zurstrassen c’était entrer dans sa caverne platonicienne sans savoir ni où ni quand on allait en émerger. La vitalité productive d’Yves n’a d’égale que son talent et face à la multitude et la diversité de son travail c’est par l’inventaire exhaustif de la dernière décennie qu’il nous a fallu débuter. Cette vision panoramique sur plusieurs milliers d’œuvres et dix ans de peinture m’en a confirmé la cohérence et dévoilé la structure évolutive. Choisir c’est renoncer, et pour y parvenir c’est un dialogue visuel entre les pièces et amical entre nous qui aura nourri, pendant plus d’un an, le processus de composition du livre. C’est cette recherche de rythme et d’harmonie, mais aussi d’incarnation physique de sa peinture, qui, en cours de conception, m’a fait poser ce titre, comme une évidence. In a Silent Way, le plus beau titre d’album de Miles Davis dont la sourdine mise sur son instrument donne paradoxalement la pleine mesure, à l’image de ce que ce livre, sans comparaison au format original des œuvres, tente de livrer de la puissance créative d’Yves Zurstrassen.

Yves’ Schaffenskraft ist nur mit seinem Talent vergleichbar und vor der Vielfalt und Fülle seiner Arbeit mussten wir mit der ausführlichen Bestandsaufnahme des letzten Jahrzehnts beginnen.

Dieser Überblick über mehrere tausend Arbeiten und zehn Jahre Malerei bestätigte mir die Kohärenz und offenbarte mir den evolutionären Aufbau. Wählen heißt verzichten; und um dies zu bewerkstelligen war ein doppelter Dialog notwendig: der visuelle zwischen den Werken und der freundschaftliche zwischen uns. Beide haben während eines Jahres den Prozess der Buchgestaltung genährt. Es ist diese Suche nach Rhythmus und Harmonie, aber auch nach Verkörperung seiner Malerei, die mich im Laufe der Gestaltung ganz zwingend zu dem Titel führte.

In a Silent Way, das schönste Album von Miles Davis wo der Dämpfer auf seinem Instrument paradoxerweise das volle Maß ermöglicht, so wie dieses Buch versucht, ohne Vergleich mit den Originalabmessungen, die schöpferische Potenz eines Yves Zurstrassen wiederzugeben.

Creating this book with Yves Zurstrassen was like entering his Platonic cave and not knowing where or when we were going to emerge. Yves’s productive vitality is rivalled only by his talent. The multitude and diversity of his work obliged us first to draw up the exhaustive inventory from the past decade. This panoramic view of several thousand works and ten years of painting confirmed its coherence and revealed its evolutional structure.

To choose is to forgo and thus, for more than one year, the selection process for the book’s composition was nurtured through a visual dialogue with the works and a friendly dialogue with the people involved. The search for rhythm and harmony, as well as the physical incarnation of his painting, suggested this selfevident title. In a Silent Way is the most beautiful title of a Miles Davis album, in which the damper fitted to his trumpet paradoxically brings out the instrument’s full potential. Likewise this book, without comparison to the original format of the works, attempts to reveal Yves Zurstrassen’s creative power.
