CAPTAIN'S CORNER ANDY FAIRBAIRN Hopefully, everyone has now heard the news that we will save £50,000 in rent for each of the next 3 years. This is a huge result for the Club and gives us the necessary breathing space to focus on re-positioning the Club to its rightful place as one of the top Golf Clubs in the central belt. In this edition, the committee shares some of the headlines from the business plan, which was a key part of the negotiation’s with Derwent our landlords. You can also find some of the highlights from the recent member’s feedback sessions, and how the insights gained have helped the committee identify some quick wins for the 2018 season. Keeping to the positivity theme, we have had a few functions recently for our lady and gents members and the feedback from the events has been excellent. The food has been first class, so it’s great to see the new team structure already paying dividends – well done to Jamie, Lieghanne and the team. So please, make use the restaurant and bar and importantly help increase the Clubs revenue. Lastly, a quick recruitment update: we are advertising in local papers and on our social media platforms and have attracted over 50 new members so far, which is great. So please like and share our posts and help us get the word out there.
SUPPORT THE CLUB IN BUILDING BELONGING
TO BE AN AMBASSADOR YOU SHOULD BE PROUD TO BE A MEMBER AND BE HAPPY TO TELL PEOPLE ABOUT THE CLUB AND THE BENEFITS OF BEING A MEMBER.
BEING AN AMBASSADOR
We understand that not everyone has time to take on more active roles on the Committees and sub-committees. The Ambassador initiative, however, is for those that have less time but still want to play a part, and are willing to support and help promote the club. We are fortunate to have champions like Derek Organ who volunteers to help the greens staff, and Mark Finn and Gianni Gradini who are dragging all their friends through our doors. But we need more ambassadors like these guys. WHY BOTHER
By taking this positive approach, the Club can improve its financial position and therefore invest in improving our product and levels of service in the future. We do not expect ambassadors to carry out all of the listed activities; we are simply looking for volunteers to help where they can. So if you have some capacity to help or indeed have any suggestions then please contact the Club:
HOW YOU CAN HELP?
Being part of a pool of volunteers available to support larger corporate and other events that need extra coordination. Helping to create a list of prospective sponsors and visitor parties. Asking friends, relatives, and acquaintances if they would like to join the club. Collecting feedback on member’s satisfaction and helping the committee complete the value proposition exercise. Help to promote and attend social events to help increase attendance in the clubhouse and revenue. Offering news and views for communications such as the Clarion to help improve communication within the Club. Volunteering to help with Greens Committee initiatives – like Divot Nights, maintaining plants and shrubs surrounding the Clubhouse. Help with M&H activities.

M&H UPDATE BY STEPHEN SAWERS
COMPETITIONS We have now passed the closing date for the matchplay events and the draw for these will be on notice boards very shortly. As you will now know the finals for these events will be part of our new FINALS DAY on Sunday 2nd September. In order to ensure we run to schedule it is very important that you take every opportunity to arrange your tie before the deadline of each round. As usual the top name in the draw is the challenger and you are required to provide three dates with one of these being a weekend. Please be as flexible as possible so that we get games played without the need for involving the Match and Handicap team in settling ties.
Fun Fridays Once we get into the summer period we will be arranging some FUN FRIDAYS where we will have some ad hoc events for you to take part in. These will range from 4 hole competitions to the introduction of 9 hole medals. Just a little warm up event before the Saturday medals and a chance to have some fun and use the clubhouse after your game.
CONGU CHANGES You may have heard about some changes to the handicapping system from CONGU. The reason for this is to gain consistency and prepare for a world handicapping system. I have highlighted some of the key changes that come into effect for this season. Introduction of category 5 for men and category 6 for men and women which provides a maximum handicap of 54 Supplementary scores for category 2 - 6 players are now relaxed with unlimited scores where previously this was restricted to 10 per season. Category 1 players with a handicap of 2.5 or higher also have no limit for supplementary medals. Restrictions are still in place for category 1 golfers with a handicap of 2.4 or lower.
THE R&A 9-HOLE PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP
9-HOLE MEDALS Whether you’re new to the game, find 18 holes too much of a challenge, or simply have less time available, 9-hole competitions are a great way to return scores for handicap purposes. The format is always a stableford over a designated 9-hole course, and no CSS is calculated, handicaps are adjusted based on the SSS. Nine hole competitions are perfect for summer evenings and we hope to be able to tie 9-hole competitions in with the spike bar and BBQ's this summer and create a fun Friday feeling.
The R&A and Scottish Golf firmly believe 9hole golf will play a prominent part in our sport’s future and therefore are running a national pairs 9-hole event open to all male and female club members. The top qualifying pair from each club will progress through to the National Final at Milnathort Golf Club, on Friday 15 June. and then the top four pairs from the National Final will qualify for the Grand Final to be held at Carnoustie on Saturday 14 July – just days before the 147th Open Championship begins. Entries close on the 28th of May so it is our intention to kick-off 9Hole Medals at Cawder with this Pairs event. The actual date is TBC, so please keep an eye out for M&H updates and we will announce the date and details on how to enter for this event.
JUNIOR UPDATE By Neil Caraher
Free Membership for under 12's if they are related to an adult member FRIDAY NIGHTS
GET A HANDICAP
Friday night events will continue in 2018. These proved very successful last year and with the development of the Academy course we will be able to introduce more competitions and keep the younger kids engaged and of course learning.
The plan is to make sure all of the children who can play a little have a handicap, even if its 54 it gives them something to improve upon. Then introduce competitive golf for the more competent players, beginning with 4, 6 & 9 hole stablefords.
We need to identify and nurture the talented children, and so we plan to give them some additional coaching in addition to the Friday night events. Hopefully we can find the next Calum Fyfe and Jamie Savage.

THE PRO SHOP TRADE IN AND TRADE UP GORDON STEWART We will be offering our members the opportunity to ‘Trade In’ their existing equipment and ‘Trade Up’ to the latest 2018 product. We want to offer our members the opportunity of using their own PGA Professional and know that we are competing or beating our competitors on price. As a small outlet we are finding the golf industry is becoming more challenging year on year, this though only makes us more creative to come up with exciting promotions that beat all our online and local competitors. Lately, we have beaten examples of ‘Double Trade-In’ valuations from American Golf, where a member was delighted with the price, he has the confidence of being professionally fitted for his new driver and now has the reassurance of any issues down the line being dealt with by ourselves.
If you are thinking of upgrading your equipment: 1 - Bring your existing club/clubs into the Pro Shop 2 - We'll give you a FREE valuation of those clubs on the spot and even tell you what you would get elsewhere 3 – Get professionally custom-fitted and use your valuation against your new equipment
PRICE MATCH GUARANTEE As a member of Cawder GC, we would promise to you that we will match or even beat any of our online, high street or local competitors on all products from any of the major golfing brands. We constantly check our prices against all our competitors ensuring you get the best possible value for any transaction you may be considering. Here are just a few examples of products that we are currently cheaper on price.

THE BIG WEEKEND Captains Drive & Gents Prize-giving We had a fantastic turn out for both the re-arranged Gents Prize-giving and the Captains Drive, so a big thank you to all that came along and made both events a great success. Frank McAvennie entertained us with his stories of his playing days, or I should say his partying days, and Jamie served up a delicious selection of Indian food - the pakora and onion bhajia were amazing. And well done to the winners of the Captains Salvers on the Saturday: Cawder course: (despite the Captain's drive) Andy Rusbury, Thomas McKay, Robert Wilson & James Kesson Keir course: John Craig, Stuart Macpherson, Dennis Hill & Cameron Craig

THE CAWDER LADIES
The latest news and updates for the coming 2018 season
Getting ready for the new season BY JENNIFER WEIR
HIGHLIGHTS Matchplay Events Lady Captain v  Lady ViceCaptain - SUNDAY 13th May Ladies Tri-am Tuesday 15th MAY
Ladies, it has been a wintery start to our 2018 golfing season. Saturday 17th March saw our team stableford played in bitterly cold conditions interspersed with occasional flurries of snow. The following day however many ladies and friends braved the snowy weather to attend our rescheduled afternoon "Spring" tea and unexpected surprise game of Bingo! Thank you to all who were able to come along to support our social event and for the selection of raffle donations. It was a most enjoyable fun way in which to spend a Sunday afternoon. Your diaries should now be starting to fill up with golf competition dates. The first few Saturday
competition ballot sheets are already displayed on the noticeboard so if you haven't yet been down to the club now is as good a time as any to come out of hibernation and spring into action and sign up. Playing in our balloted competitions is one way to meet new people and then afterwards exchange numbers to arrange a friendly bounce game. Why not enter our matchplay knockout competitions; the Elder Cup (Ladies Handicap Singles Matchplay Competition) and the John Scanlon Trophy (Ladies Handicap Foursomes Competition). Enter by adding your name to the drawsheets displayed on the noticeboard in the Ladies locker room. A popular team event is the ladies Triam Open which will take place this year on Tuesday 15th May. Spread the word amongst your friends at other clubs to come along for a great day out. Once you have organised a team add your name and confirm your booking and tee-off time via the BRS system. The team competition dates for our various leagues for those eligible to
play have now all been confirmed so please look for the notices and remember to tick the dates on which you are available to play. All the team captains value your support. Congratulations to all the ladies who played and triumphed by winning the Chrissie Anderson League last year. Good luck defending your title and good luck to all the other teams in your forthcoming matches. Let's hope this will be all the Cawder's teams' winning year.
The fixture diary includes a variety of competitions to enter and therefore many opportunities to aspire to improve and break your handicap or just come along and play. From all the ladies committee, here's to a successful 2018 golfing season. Gang Forward.
MEET OUR HEAD CHEF: JAMIE OWENS In this edition of the 19th Hole, we meet our new Head Chef, Jamie Owens. Jamie is a father to two girls (5 and 6 years old) and a new baby boy (4 months old). Being a family man Jamie is also a regular at his girl's school and nursery where he takes the children for cooking and baking classes. With experience cooking in Indian, Mexican and Pizza restaurants, we can look forward to an array of specials this year. His goal this year is to return the restaurant to profitability and with a hunger to prepare meals from scratch he see's plenty of savings an opportunities for the Club to do better. Jamie is currently working on a new menu that will include some of the old favourites like the Curry Platter and the 16 ounce Cod and homemade chips, tarter sauce and mushy peas. The specials board will also be re-introduced as our very own "del boy" has an eye for good deals and turning good food into profit. So please pop into the restaurant and enjoy some of Jamie's delights in 2018.
What is your favourite Dish? "A boiled ham clapshot. Boiled ham itself is delicious and I like to add some traditional Scottish clapshot"
CLASSIFIEDS SUGGESTIONS NGL Super 6 is a new golf league with a twist; it's a new 6 hole format made up of teams of 6 players. They are looking for Clubs and so if anyone is interested please get in touch: email@example.com
COMPETITION TIME We would like some help collecting photographs of the Golf Courses for marketing purposes and so we are running a Best Photo Competition! The only rule is that by entering you allow the Club to reuse your image(s) for marketing purposes. The winner will be announced in the July edition, and the Captain will donate 2 tickets for this year's Open at Carnoustie to the winner. Please send your entries to firstname.lastname@example.org
New Novel Despite never having previously written anything, Cawder member, Martin Geraghty began writing his manuscript in June 2016. His debut novel, A Mind Polluted, is out on 10th May through Crooked Cat books and is now available from Amazon on pre-order, the kindle edition is just ÂŁ1.99. Set in Glasgow, it tells the story of a young boy who overhears a terrible confession from his mother's lips which sets him on an inexorable, self-destructive path to bloody violence. Please offer your support to a fellow member.
