General Case for Support Who Are We? Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay is a faith-based organization serving the needs of older adults of all beliefs, their families, and the broader community. Church and civic leaders wanted to create a premier non-profit retirement community to serve the Hampton Roads region, and to the extent possible, make it accessible to people regardless of financial means. Through the power of community living, we bring joy to life. Our mission is “Creating community to foster joy and well-being.” For more than 30 years, our residents have helped us create community, bringing joy to their retirement years and to the lives of others.

How Does the Westminster-Canterbury Foundation Help? Our founders recognized that Westminster-Canterbury, like many non-profit service organizations, could not generate enough resources through mandatory fees alone to have the full impact envisioned. In fact, they began raising private money for our fellowship assistance programs even before enough donations were secured to construct the buildings! Private, community support has always been vital to helping us reach our dream of serving the growing older adult population in Hampton Roads. Since it was created in 1992, the Westminster-Canterbury Foundation has been entrusted with our fundraising efforts and programs. The Foundation focuses on programs that benefit residents, staff and the surrounding community. A summary of the Foundation’s causes, its funds and programs supporting our mission follows.

The Fellowship Fund: Access and Financial Peace of Mind “It has been very gratifying to have personally known several fellowship recipients. One friend worked in ministry. She enjoyed the many benefits that result from living in a loving community like Westminster-Canterbury. She could not have lived here without financial assistance.” The Rev. David W. Davenport, Chairman, Westminster-Canterbury Foundation. Out of 56 Continuing Care Retirement Communities in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Westminster-Canterbury is one of only three to offer financial need-based support to residents at admission. Currently, 62 people are residents because of the Fellowship Fund. Most of these residents worked for the citizens of Hampton Roads in modestly compensated service vocations. Additionally, because of our Fellowship Fund’s confidential safety net, all residents enjoy the peace of mind that only comes from lifelong financial security should they outlive their money. “I just recently celebrated having lived here for two years and I couldn’t be happier. I feel so blessed to be here and am eternally grateful to the Foundation for making it possible.” From a Fellowship Resident’s letter. The Fellowship Fund has provided more than $9 million in care to residents. Our ability to accept new fellowship residents, and the support of our existing residents, is dependent on meeting ambitious annual fundraising goals. Concurrently, our long range plan is to build an endowment of $20 million so that we never have to suspend new fellowship support in tough economic downturns. 1

General Case for Support continued Employee Assistance: Education and Emergency Help “I am so grateful for the generosity of the residents and supporters of the Foundation. Without your assistance, my son’s education and debt burden would have been different. I know he appreciates the opportunities that will be available to him because of the education he is getting.” Penny Bullington, an employee of Westminster-Canterbury. Great service and care are entirely dependent upon a great staff. Our staff is extraordinary. They simply love our residents and our mission. Our staff is paid fairly, but keeping fees affordable dictates that many of the jobs in senior living pay modestly. A staff member may experience an unforeseen financial setback. Another may be striving to achieve advanced certification in her field. Still another may be seeking tuition reimbursement to help support broader educational goals. In such cases, the Foundation is committed to helping the extraordinary people who fulfill our mission. In 2012, 25 employees or their children received a total of $50,375 in scholarship grants. Thirty employees received $7,401 in confidential emergency assistance. The Foundation creates ladders of opportunity, and helps employees during the storms of life. Genuine community means caring for and about each other.

Edge of Excellence: First-Rate Programs and Facilities “You don’t have to tell me that The Hoy Center is a 5 Star health care center because I already know, from the high level of care and rehabilitation that I experienced during my recent visit!” Red Stone, a resident and board member. Westminster-Canterbury has a deep, abiding commitment to excellence. These are projects and programs we will launch over the coming four years, because of philanthropic support: • We will convert our last 20 semi-private nursing beds to private suites. Private nursing beds are now the standard for preeminent retirement communities. The citizens of Hampton Roads deserve no less. • It’s Never 2 Late: This is an innovative computer technology that brings restorative brain therapy, entertainment, and video communication right to the bedside. We need to raise $218,000 to install the system and $47,000 per year to operate it. Our Edge of Excellence Funds also includes the: Library, Chapel, Tuttle Courtyard, Meditation Garden, Audio Books, and other amenities that encourage socialization, building upon our sense of community.

A Successful Ministry With annual revenues of $49,000,000, 496 employees serving 685 older adults, WestminsterCanterbury is the largest non-profit senior living option in the Hampton Roads region. Our leadership team recently completed a comprehensive strategic plan to position Westminster-Canterbury for the future. The three pillars of the plan are to: preserve and enhance our economic security, achieve and maintain preeminence, and pursue growth that serves the first two strategies. We respectfully ask you to consider helping us reach our dream of touching older adults through the power of community. With your help, we can continue to stay on the leading edge of excellence while keeping our services accessible through reasonable fees and financial assistance. No easy feat, but we owe it to our parents, our grandparents and each other. 2

The Westminster-Canterbury Society Throughout history, thoughtful, caring individuals have provided bequests and other gifts in their wills to ensure the financial health and prosperity of schools, churches and communities. Here at Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay, the names Hardy, Tuttle, Millikin, Anderson, Fell and Hoy have been recognized because of bequests they have made to enrich this community. Others have made Charitable Gift Annuities which have not only benefited the community, but have provided high interest income to the donors for the rest of their lives. Those individuals who have remembered WestminsterCanterbury in their wills or who have purchased gift annuities from the Foundation proudly become members of the Westminster-Canterbury Society. In 2010, Mrs. Nancy Hoy Nancy Hoy notified the Westminster-Canterbury Foundation that she is designating a portion of her estate in the amount of $1,000,000 to benefit the WestminsterCanterbury Foundation. The income from this endowment will provide funds annually to support our mission and bring joy to life in our faith-based community. If you have any questions about becoming a member of the Westminster-Canterbury Society, please call Bob Heely at 757-496-1106 at the Foundation.

$400,000 Gift to Westminster-Canterbury to Update a Hampton Roads Community Treasure The Hoy Center at Westminster-Canterbury will convert its last twenty semi-private skilled nursing beds to private rooms thanks to a $400,000 Charitable Gift Annuity given by Charles “Red” Stone to the Westminster-Canterbury Foundation. “The Hoy Center has long been the local standard of excellence for nursing home services and rehabilitation in Hampton Roads,” said J. Benjamin Unkle Jr., CEO of Westminster-Canterbury. “However, we still had a small number of our original nursing care rooms for two patients. Today, the best nursing homes have all private rooms, and this gift allows our facilities to catch up with the excellent care our staff has always provided.”

Red Stone with the Physical Therapy Team

In fact, exemplary care inspired this gift. This past winter, Mr. Stone needed rehabilitation services as a result of back surgery and was quickly accepted into The Hoy Center. He was so pleased with the love of the staff, the care, and the food that he wanted to do something to thank the Westminster-Canterbury community. Stone said, “The food was like room service, you ordered from a menu, and the staff, they were just wonderful.” The Rev. David Davenport, Chairman of the Foundation, stated, “We are so pleased to receive a gift like this knowing that it will help provide state-of-the-art care not only for our residents but for community residents who need temporary rehabilitation services as well.” 4
