NODAL AGGLOMERATION -Reinvention of the traditional tectonic in vernacular architecture Tourism Center 01/2014-06/2014 Master of Architecture Thesis, Semester 4
Zhangjiajie became a popular tourism site because its beautiful natural view. But the construction for tourism destroyed some part of the environment and the sensitive ecosystem is getting worse, which obstructs the tourism development.Since the local economy relies on tourism industry, people could not reject visitors to come. The issue is how to maintain the natural environment but also can serve the demanding of the tourism industry as well. There are a lot of villages located around the heritage site since hundreds of years ago. I researched the local architecture to learn how they could build their houses and live in this sensitive site without disturbing it. The spirits of vernacular architecture is the Tenon joint. This construction technique uses timber as the only one material to fix all components, without any need for nails or screws. Therefore the joint would not get loose during several years, or even get tighter. That is one of the reasons some historical buildings built hundreds of years ago could survive even earthquakes. The building type is eventually a result of the consideration of local topography, climate, material, structure and lifestyle.
Type 1- 3 pieces This joint only needs 3 pieces to hold each other and the finished joint looks all the same from 360 degree. But the disadvantage of this type is there is void space in the finished joint, which will enable one of the components displacement.

Type 2 6 sticks This joint needs 6 sticks to hold each other and the finished joint looks all the same from 360 degree. Each of them is different and has to be cut in 3 dimensions, and the section profile of the joint only takes 1/4 of the whole stick.

The expansion method is straight forward since each component only need to extend twice length. But the defect is the same as its single joint, or even more complicated in manufacture process.

VARIOUS DENSITY AND DIMENSION Rather than keep a uniform grid, the system could be built in various density of grid, both in horizontal and vertical direction.
IRREGULAR GRIDS To create more organic space, this testing is tried to carve some part of the grid but keep it stable as well. Remove some columns or horizontal grids of roof structure. In this testing, there are endless possibilities could be explored, but the conclusion is rather than a grid, the structure system is adaptable to any shape of conditions.

Methodology for architecture Based on the research of piled foundation structures and魯 班鎖, my design strategy is focused on using the simplest type of魯班鎖 as a structural building joint and using piled foundations for minimizing earth work, while retaining the original landscape. To respond to the tourism industry demanding, the project is looking at providing a service station nearby the route of tourists, as well as exhibition and craftmanship workshop. The hilly topography and the Jinbian Brook between the site and the tourists pedestrian way are both as the challenges and opportunities to test how the system works with this type of sensitive natural site.

The symmetrical grid of the structure in the horizontal directions gives flexibility to the layout of columns, which are not necessarily arranged in a linear way. The interior space is determined by usage of each room and program, instead of inflexible column grids. -In the vertical direction, the piled foundation system enables the building floor to adjust to the varied topography by minimal impact on the original landscape.

Revitalizing Nam Sang Wai through sustainable self-build construction 09/2013-12/2013 Master of Architecture Studio, Semester 1 The project is suggests a low-impact and ‘reversible’ self-build housing development within Nam Seng Wai, an ecological site within the ‘Deep Bay Area’, in order to revitalize the diminished fishing community as well as provide housing for accumulated indigenous small house applications. Composite fibre glass pile foundations that define lots are planted at once as an infrastructure for homeowners to purchase. These foundations act as a planning and regulating mechanism. Through combining the prefab packages with the purchased foundations, it becomes possible to create a myriad enclosures and outdoor spaces at a range of densities suited for different community groups. The combination between foundations and prefab package also allows ample opportunity for misuse, thus creating interesting accidental moments. The design utilizes Professor Hsieh’s light-weight steel system and locally found reed as cladding material to create a prefabricated typology packages referencing existing Hong Kong’s local stilt house culture. The discovery of reed as a construction raw material also creates the opportunity for a new industry to take place within the site, thus enhancing its economic value.

The research-based design studio will seek to develop innovations in the overall organization and design of mixed use(residential + commercial) buildings in Hong Kong. I research of shell or skin of the building and work inward through various scales to rethink the overall building. As the name suggests, the project keeps considering how the facade can play a significant role in organizing,distributing and accommodating different program requirements. RESEARCH Starting from case study on existing commercial and residential buildings at Shueng Wan, all the projects of this semester are exploring connections between facades and programs, so that we can figure out from the outside what happens inside, behind the facade. STAGE 1 This stage focused on combination of these two elements and programs on a two-facades building. Firstly, the design was exploring for flexible space for two programs and transform of facade. Then I turn to be more interested in how the two programs perform on the facade and how the two typologies transit.

STAGE 2 SCHEME A
Several studies were doing on 3 dimensions of the openings, width, height and thickness of facade, and some parametric strategies were used to realize the transition idea. The irregular and curvy grid with an inconsistent thickness of facade worked well at this stage for 2 facades.
The final project set the hybrid to an exact site at Shueng Wan which means need deep consideration about the topography and context.
The site is surrounded by a series of skyscrapers on almost 3 sides, which is the reason I chose to use solar analysis as a strategy to control the thickness of faรงade.
The form of hybrid did not keep sharp corners and twist in order to response to the context.

In memorial of the Duoluo street, which has served academic students for more than 10 years and been tore down in ruins during only 1 year, a pavilion will be built. Through generations, young people rendered their energy to the street and spent life at here.The street itself, facing the Taozi Lake and near the Fenghuang Hill, was gifted with variable spaces. In this project, I try to build up an interactive relationship between people and the buildings, which could offer different experience by walking.

Prototype As one of major commercial types, the refreshments attracted thousands of people everyday. And most of the popular shops contained underneath their tents. The shape of tents were very extra to catch peopleâ€™s attention. And the experience of being under the tents is quite easy for people to recall their happy memory of gathering with friends.
In this project, the roof is a crucial construction. When sunlight go through the roof covered by glass and shine in, the shadows will transform with time passing.
Therefore, the density of cables in the roof, will directly impact on the space experience.
