Design is everywhere Design affects everyone Design communicates ideas

As a designer, I am eager to create spaces that successfully communicate innovative concepts, transforming the definition of space. I am zealous about taking design to the next level and am willing to explore my creativity to its fullest potential. In order to prolong the quality of life, interest in sustainable concepts in design should be a priority. Building responsibly will benefit everyone. In my eyes, sustainable design is essential to having a future. I plan on making the mundane exquisite. Aspiring to be a designer at an established design firm, I dream to design projects around the world. Traveling will only broaden my experiences and knowledge of the many different cultures, people, and traditions that in the end will positively influence my design. My dream is not only to be knowledgeable of what the world has to offer but also to play a significant role in influencing the world through my designs.

Concept Statement The best way to convey the luxury associated with 5-star hotels is to incorporate elements which allow all five senses to become a part of the experience. An experience of an extravagant nature, accomplished by a design that has evolved into a harmonious whole, evidenced by a unity displayed throughout the hotel. The design will draw from the rich history of Chinese culture, using elements both decorative and architectural to mold the space and echo the vibrant nature of China’s past and present. We plan to achieve these goals by designing architectural elements that engage the senses, visually pulling visitors throughout the space while seemingly asking them to pause and feel the textures around them, creating a memorable experience for every guest space by space. The complexity and intrigue of China’s history will be displayed through layering: spaces, colors, materials, and experiences felt as you move through HK Spa Hotel. Overall, HK Spa Hotel will exemplify a design which will be both comfortable and exciting by using vibrant and sensory architectural elements, fully grounded in functional space planning. harmonious

schematics Project Name: Freedman & Smith Law Client: Student Project Project Type: Office Project Location: Athens, Georgia Date Completed: December 2009 Project Objectives: To take field measurements of the existing structure. To learn and implement the programming and schematic design phases. To research law office design and understand standards and codes pertaining to law office design. To develop a functional design and produce construction and presentation drawings that show the intent of the design.

structure before demolition

Concept Statement The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house located on the edge of the University of Georgia’s North campus was of Antebellum architecture, dating back to the mid 1990’s. The Univeristy bought the property in order to expand the campus which in turn rendered the structure useless and was eventually torn down. This site is ideal for Freedman & Smith Law firm simply because it is adjacent to the law school and law library on UGA’s campus. Before demolition, field measurements were taken of the existing structure. The goal of the project was to transform the existing structure into a modern law firm. I made the design decision to restore the Antebellum architecture on the front facade and designed a modern addition to the back of the existing structure. The roof top terrace was added so that employees and clients can enjoy the outdoor elements. Also, with the addition, a naturally lit library creates a stimulating environment for research. The interior color palette was chosen based on color therapy; the color green is refreshing and rejuvenating, promoting an optimistic outlook for both the clients and lawyers. The use of translucent materials throughout the building makes the spaces feel larger, creating a sleek and modern design.

Concept Statement The Green Haven Village, located in the heart of downtown Athens, is a shopping environment unlike any other in the region. Gathering inspiration from artists Richard Serra and Maya Lin, it was designed to be an oasis for local artists and the public to enjoy. The oasis develops a sense of stewardship and provides an authentic shopping experience for both the residents and the public community. A large green space with an outdoor amphitheater is nestled between the buildings creating a park-like atmosphere. The buildings surrounding this space step down in height from North to South in order for the sun to penetrate down into the slopping green space. The integration of the residential loft units was designed originally to provide urban living for people with jobs downtown. This addition completes all attributes of a live/work community.

Project Name: Trader Joes Client: Student Project Project Type: Retail Project Location: Athens, Georgia Date Completed: May 2010 Project Objectives: To research an established retail company. To design a retail store based off of the company’s established brand. To develop a functional design and produce construction and presentation drawings that show the intent of the design.

figuring the adventure... height of shelves

Concept Statement I designed a Trader Joes in The Green Haven Village, located in the heart of downtown Athens, an oasis for local artists, residents, and the public to enjoy, in order to provide the residents of the village and the public community a convenient yet unique market of fresh produce, meat, and flowers. The addition of a local Trader Joes completes all of the necessary attributes to an urban live/work community. The concept of this specific Trader Joes store was centered around the “journey” of the shopper. The store, being geared towards impulse buying, was planned in a way in which every customer would pass by every shelf, creating an adventurous shopping experience. The quirky yet fun brand created brings a wide variety of customers from culinary chefs to college students, looking for gourmet, healthy food at inexpensive prices.

table design The narrative behind this coffee table traces back to the summer of 2009. While spending the first couple of days with my new batch of teen campers, the counselors were in for a rude awakening. The first few days of camp were spent getting to know each other, completing team building excerises and challenges from dawn to dusk. Most all of my campers had bonded and were ready to complete a three day backpacking trip in Kings Canyon National Park. There was one exception. Landon was not motivated and simply did not care to participate in the team building activities. After serious contemplation on whether to allow him on our backpacking trip, all counselors agreed that Landon could prove us wrong. Day 1 on the trail: While the counselors were setting up camp and cooking dinner around the fire, our campers worked as a flawless team to complete the final team building activity. The objective ultimately was to make it across the “spider web” that was spun between two trees. The challenge was that each person had to cross through a different opening. Landon saved the day! Because of his strength, he successfully helped every camper across the web and at the end led the group in a huddle and chant! The top of this coffee table signifies the complicated web that the teenagers were challenged to cross while the base represents the obstacle that most of them encountered. The base that I designed moves the viewer’s eye into the piece, following a zig-zag motion. This exact movement correlates with the back and forth process of strategizing and successfully crossing the web.

lighting design Concept Statement The inspiration sprung from the bulbaceous shape of a red onion. The various layers of translucent skin give the onion its beautiful, reddish purple hue. The goal, to design and build a light fixture, that achieves a functional source of illumination and reflects the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” theme, was accomplished through the creation of The Giant Bulb. Tomato stand rings and chicken wire form the armature of the abstracted yet spherical form of the onion. Creating a drum-like overlay, the red and purple tissue paper is layered intentionally on top of the chicken wire. This overlay diffuses the warm, soft lamp used within the fixture. The different color paper naturally creates highlights and shadows when the fixture becomes illuminated. At the top, the chicken wire is not fully secured to the armature, representing the many layers of the onion’s skin “peeling” off. Sprouting from the bottom, the overgrowing roots present a whimsical quality. The decision to suspend the fixture from the ceiling is deliberate, providing the viewer with the chance to get close and experience the three dimensional form entirely. When illuminated, the fixture radiantly glows presenting a suitable illumination for an intimate lounge or restaurant application.
