Jack & Barbara McCoy Donate One Million to St. Teresa

IN THIS ISSUE:

Jack (a 1955 graduate of St. Teresa) and Barbara McCoy recently donated one million dollars ($1,000,000) to St. Teresa High School. Because of the McCoy’s benevolence, St. Teresa paid off the long standing loan to the St. Teresa Educational Foundation that was owed from the previous Science Wing construction project. Coinciding with the McCoy’s donation, the gym and football field will be named in honor of four outstanding coaches who previously worked at St. T. During the next boys’ basketball season, the high school gymnasium will be named after Joe Venturi, who successfully coached at St. Teresa in the 1950’s. The remaining funds from the McCoy million dollar donation will be used for St. Teresa Scholarships in subsequent years. Also, during the upcoming 2013 Homecoming Weekend (October 11-13), a ceremony to name the football field after Ed Boehm, Scott Davis and Dick Munn will be held. “The McCoy’s have certainly been generous to St. Teresa and students will benefit from their donation for years to come,” stated Dr. Ken Hendriksen, Principal/CEO.

A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Friends & Families,

Capital Campaign – We need your Help!! Phase III is closer to becoming a reality at St. Teresa provided $600,000 in “new monies” (subject to the current 1 for 2 match program) are received and/or pledged. Phase III entails construction of a new Physical Education Annex, including a Boys’ and Girls’ locker room and a “state of the art” weight room to be placed at the north end of the St. Teresa gym. Phase III has been long overdue at St. Teresa; we could start Phase III anytime during the upcoming school year since this new addition could be constructed while school is in session. It is amazing that we have raised over five million ($5,000,000) in only two years. The St. Teresa family has certainly supported this campaign. However, the P.E. annex is needed NOW!! How long has the St. Teresa alumni, students and parents talked about the locker room situation? Our students deserve better. Please read Rich Smith’s update on the Believe•Build•Become Campaign. I know that we can accomplish Phase III sooner than later. Thanks for your continued support. Those of us here at St. Teresa are truly…….. Called to Serve Kenneth Hendriksen Principal/CEO

Capital Campaign Progress Report Two years ago, St. Teresa High School embarked on the most extensive capital campaign in its distinguished history. This project was titled “Believe – Build – Become” and had as its goal to raise $7.5 million. Because of the necessity of making some much needed timely repairs and upgrades, and considering cost and fundraising dynamics, the work has been divided into four phases. The initial two phases were completed during the last two summers at a cost of $3.6 million. As a result, the school is much improved and in good condition. The next phase, phase III, consists of the construction of a state-of-the-art physical education annex north of the gym and a small parking lot at a cost of $2.4 million. Thus, collectively, phases I/II/III cost $6.0 million. We have raised $5.1 million and need your help to procure the remaining 10% or $600K in new funds (plus $300K available in matching funds) in order to proceed with this work. We intend to do so just as soon as the funds are available. The final phase, phase IV, will address outside facilities, including artificial turf for the football field and some track facilities. Final decisions regarding this phase are contingent on cost and land usage and are under review. God has truly blessed this campaign as evidenced by the generosity of His people. We certainly thank everyone for their help in making this campaign such a success and respectfully request your continued consideration of this worthwhile project. Please see pledge and donation forms that are enclosed, or visit the St.Teresa website at st-teresahs.org/donors/building-block-campaign/ to fill out the donation card . Rich Smith 2

A Legacy of Forty-two Years: Phil McMullen

By Arlis E. DeJaynes Twenty-eight years ago, on my first day of teaching at St. Teresa High School, I met a young man named Phil McMullen. I knew when I met him that he had a very important position at St. Teresa. I knew that, not because of anything that he said or did in my presence—and not even because of his title as Dean of Students-- but because of how students acted in his presence. There was a palpable respect that everyone could sense as soon as he entered a room. Later that year, as I was directing the musicals, I would often go to the stage area to work during my prep hour, and I could hear Mr. McMullen teaching

Phil McMullen

in his anatomy/physiology classroom. Sometimes I would find myself enjoying his lectures or his leadership in class discussions and laughing at his humor in the classroom, and I knew why students held him in such high esteem. Play practices often allowed me to talk to students on a more personal level, and the general consensus was that if any one teacher deserved respect

7

SCHOOL EVENTS 8

and admiration, it was Phil McMullen. Phil had already been here fourteen years when I first met him. His dedication to this school was immediately evident. His classroom was filled with wild animals that Phil had preserved through taxidermy. His collections of insects, his 2800 film and television segments of scientific issues, and his eight cabinets of diagrams, notes, and tests were testimony of his degree of expertise in the science classroom. But he invested himself in St. Teresa High School in more ways than as a classroom teacher. If a paper lay on the floor, he would pick it up. If leaves gathered around the doorways, he would sweep them away. It didn’t take long for me to realize that his love for this school and everything it stood for was the reason he demanded student discipline as Dean of Students and promoted tough educational standards in the classroom. He had a good mentor himself—in the form of Sr. Clotilde O’Riley, who also had great love for this school and for the standards of Catholic education. Her influence lived on in Phil McMullen, as he continued her values of excellence in his own classroom and throughout the school. There are so many examples of things that Mr. Mac did or said that made me a better teacher and a better person. The halls of St. Teresa will never be the same without his presence here. Thousands of students are privileged to have been his students. I am privileged to have been his colleague. I am blessed to be his friend.

Excerpts from Alumni Tributes: “You were one of the teachers I feared most as an

incoming Freshman. Maybe it’s because my older brothers had more run-ins with you, and I saw the punishments you doled out first-hand. However, my first impression of you was at orientation where you went over placement with students and parents. You were sincere, kind and gave me kudos for having such high science scores.” -Julie (Martin) Paxton, Class of ‘91 “As a professional scientist, I attribute my entire career to an early fascination with the natural world. One of the defining moments of the development of that fascination was Phil’s Anatomy/Physiology course during my time at St. Teresa. It solidified my interest in the natural sciences and taught me more about the world and myself in ways that would take volumes to describe. I will forever be grateful to Phil McMullin for the education and inspiration he gave me. He is a huge part of why I am a very proud St. Teresa graduate and always will be.” -Bill Gruenloh “When I was a sophomore in 1983, his lecture on tapeworms brought me to tears. The whole class was buckled over laughing – it was great. I was very quiet and serious back then, and his class was a great release. Thank you and Best Wishes Mr. McMullen. Tapeworms will never

be funnier.” - Kristen (Fleming)Hise “Mr. McMullen was known to all of us students as PMac. There was never a day in class that he did not make us all laugh. The material was tough, but having him as the teacher made the learning fun. I had many firsts as a student in his anatomy class. It was my first time in a class with only 9 people, it was my first time being excited about pricking my finger for blood every day for 2 weeks during the blood lab, and my first time ever cutting open a cute baby pig to perform an autopsy. Needless to say, PMac made all his classes unforgettable..” -Jamie Brown, Class of 2011 “My favorite Mr. McMullen memory was when the male students decided it wasn’t fair that we had to wear long uniform pants on hot summer days while the girls were cooler in skirts. When the boys showed up in skirts, in keeping with the uniform policy, we all ended up in Mr. McMullen’s office. He handled it perfectly, tried really hard not to laugh at the situation, and soon everyone could wear shorts, so I guess the battle was won. Then, of course, there was that horrible video we watched in biology class. When the farmer took position behind the cow and put on a plastic glove that went all the way up to his shoulder, you knew it was not going to end well.” -Tony Hill “I would just like to give a big thank you to Mr. McMullen. Without him as a teacher, I’m not sure I would have kept my drive to succeed in science. After taking my first class with him, I was determined to find a way to take every class offered that he taught in my 4 years at St. Teresa. He also always knew a great way to make the class fun. I remember in Zoology, we had one section over mollusks (clams, oysters, octopus, and squid) and he brought them in and we cooked them in different ways and tried them. Many of them were things that I would have never tried. This was just one example of how he was able to bring something unique to the class and make it fun rather than just a boring lecture that half of the class fell asleep during.” -Mary Kate Kenney , Class of 2007 “Mr. McMullen: a little scary, but always fair (with a sense of humor).” -Liz Wainright “Though I only had PMac as a junior in anatomy, he made me feel welcome in my transition to St. Teresa. I loved anatomy class, and he helped fuel my love of science. I’m a senior in college now and on my way to working on my master’s in Forensics. Every time I talk about my career goals I tell people the story of the autopsy of the pig in anatomy. PMac was an awesome teacher, and I never would have done that well on tests without the jeopardy study sessions. I will always cherish that year. He was the reason I got to see the Body Worlds exhibit as well. I have many fond memories of PMac, and I know St T will be missing him. Thanks for being a part of my high school experience!” -Andie (Reynolds) Grube

ALUMNI NEWS A big “thank you” to Robert Griffin for sending the 1944 class photo of the St. Teresa Kindergarten. According to a publication printed that same year, “St. Teresa’s Kindergarten, charmingly situated on the outskirts of the city, is an ideal place for tiny tots, combining as it does, the proximity to the city with the quiet surrounding of the country. The children have the advantage of private bus service to and from school, and of cafeteria luncheon. Enrollment, 58. Thirty names on waiting list. Open to all creeds. Present enrollment is 75% non-Catholic.” Have a photo and or story? Share it with us! Your Legacy

The St. Teresa Educational Foundation was incorporated in 1982. It is a separate legal entity from St. Teresa High School. The foundation is an Illinois Not for Profit Corporation. The Foundation has its own Board of Directors. They meet four times a year (January, April, July and October). At the April meeting the Foundation directors review the annual audit. The St. Teresa Educational Foundation makes available its income for religious, charitable and educational purposes as directed by the Foundation Board of Directors. Since 1990, the St. Teresa Educational Foundation has given to St. Teresa High School over 2.5 million dollars. When planning your will, consider establishing a bequest or scholarship in the St. Teresa Educational Foundation. Your gift to the St. Teresa Educational Foundation will assist future students.
