THE INTRODUCTORY RITES Before Mass begins, the people gather in a spirit of recollection, preparing for their participation in the Mass. All stand during the entrance procession.

PENITENTIAL ACT There are three forms of the Penitential Act which may be chosen from as appropriate. Each Penitential Act begins with the invitation to the faithful by the Priest:

REFLECTION

 In the second part of the Book of Isaiah, dating from the Babylonian Exile, are four Poems of the Task of a Servant of the Lord. It is unclear whether this servant is an individual or a personification of the People of Israel, serving the Lord by witnessing to the values of God’s covenant with Israel, and eventually suffering for them. They depict a servant of the Lord, wholly dedicated to the Lord, and pleasing to him, who will bring true justice to Israel and to the nations, and will suffer hideously and die in the Lord’s service, and will eventually be justified. Whatever the original meaning, Christian tradition has applied these songs to Jesus and his mission. Three of these “Servant” poems are read on the first three days of Holy Week, and the fourth on Good Friday. It is most likely that Jesus himself had this task of the servant in mind when he speaks so frequently of his own task of service – “the Son of man came not to be served but to serve” (Mk 10:45) – or says that the first of his followers must be “last of all and servant of all” (9:35). The Voice from heaven to Jesus at the Baptism echoes the opening of the first song, “Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights” (Is 42:1); this was the signal that his public mission should begin. So in a way these poems sum up the mission of Jesus. There seem to have been various stories circulating in the Christian tradition about a woman paying homage to Jesus by anointing him and wiping his feet with her hair. In Mark 14:3-9 at Bethany a woman anoints his head just before the Passion, and Jesus interprets this as preparation for his burial (as he would not later be anointed for his burial). In Luke 7:36-50 a woman sheds tears of repentance on his feet and anoints them with oil at the house of Simon the Pharisee; Jesus praises her for her unbounded love. Stressing repentance contrasted with Simon’s lack of courteous hospitality, this is a characteristic Lukan story. There may be some crossover between the different stories, for anointing the feet is unusual (it makes them sticky!), whereas anointing the head is more normal (the warmth then diffuses the perfume). This reaction of Jesus in putting homage to his own person before attention to the poor is unusual. Perhaps it is intended to counter the horror that is so soon to overtake him; it is certainly a useful reminder of the honour due to his person in every circumstance.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Remember that the sacrament is above all an act of God’s love. It is a personal moment to be lived in a relationship of love with God. It is not routine, nor an ordeal to be gone through, but is very much part of the personal renewal which takes place in each person. You are invited, in the light of God’s love, to recognise the sinfulness of your life, to have true sorrow for your sins, and a firm intention to avoid them in future.

Essential elements of a good confession To make a good confession, we should: 1. Pray first, asking God to help us. 2. Make a sincere examination of conscience to see how we have sinned since our last confession. 3. Confess our sins simply, with humility and honesty. 4. Make our act of contrition with heartfelt sorrow and a “firm purpose of amendment”, being determined that we will avoid the occasions of sin. 5. EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE Careful preparation is vital in order to make the most of this encounter with our loving heavenly Father. Find some time to be alone and quiet to reflect on your life, your relationship with God and others. An examination of conscience provides us with what we are going to say in the confessional. Without time given to such examination our confession is in danger of being incomplete. There are many ways: one is to use a gospel passage, especially one of the many healing miracles or occasions of forgiveness (eg Lk 15:11-32; Jn 4:5-42; Mt 18:21-35; Lk 18:9-14). Imagine you are the person being healed or forgiven by Jesus. Read the scripture passage, imagine you are in the scene, and listen to the words of Jesus. He speaks to you! What do you say? Alternatively, Jesus summed up and extended the Ten Commandments by his two great commandments (Mk 12:28-42): Love God and your neighbour. Mortal sin is sin whose object is a grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent (Catechism 1857). We must confess all mortal sins. We are not obliged to confess all venial sins. We commit venial sin when, in a less serious matter, we do not observe the standard prescribed by the moral law, or when we disobey the moral law in a grave matter, but without full knowledge or without complete consent (Catechism 1862). Confession of venial sins is an act of devotion. We need not be unduly anxious to confess them all, but may rather choose to focus on areas of our life that are most in need of Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grace.

THE ROSARY As a Gospel prayer, centred on the mystery of the redemptive Incarnation, the Rosary is a prayer with a clearly Christological orientation. Its most characteristic element, in fact, the litany-like succession of Hail Marys, becomes in itself an unceasing praise of Christ, who is the ultimate object both of the Angel’s announcement and of the greeting of the Mother of John the Baptist: ‘Blessed is the fruit of your womb’ (Lk 1:42). (Pope Saint Paul VI, Apostolic Exhortation Marialis Cultus 46) The basic form of the Rosary is well known: one Our Father, ten Hail Marys and one Glory be make a decade, and each decade is usually devoted to meditating on a particular mystery. These mysteries are conventionally divided into four groups of five, as given below. These groups are usually assigned to particular days of the week, although this is only a custom and is not prescriptive.
