The Old Testament is not the only place where we can find references to stewardship. S+EWARDSHIP
What Does
W
hat comes to mind when you hear the word “stewardship”? Do you think of it as just another way to talk about money? Do you quickly dismiss it as a notion that has nothing to do with being Catholic? Stewardship is actually a concept that is Scripturally-based and is absolutely vital to our life as Catholics. God tells us, in the very first book of the Old Testament, “Be fertile and multiply. Fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air and all the living things that move on the earth” (Gen 1:28). What does that mean to us today? It simply means that God is telling us, “This is yours, so take care of it.” One of the first things God tells us to do is to be good stewards of the gifts He has entrusted to us! The Old Testament is not the only place where we can find references to stewardship. Indeed, of the 36 parables in the New Testament, more than half of them deal with time, talent, possessions, or money. Therefore, if Jesus spoke of stewardship that much, it should be a very important part of our lives!
2
As Catholics, we refer to the three facets of stewardship as “time, talent, and treasure.” Although these are three concrete ways to express and measure stewardship, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops tells us that stewardship is part of discipleship. Stewardship is a way of responding to God’s call in every aspect of our lives. The Scriptures and Church traditions teach us one important point that cannot be overstated — that stewardship is primarily based on our need to give in gratitude, not on the Church’s need to receive. Of course, both the Catholic Church and our particular parish will always need money. However, we are not asked to give simply to defray costs and fund charitable programs. We are instead asked to remember our need to gratefully return a portion of our time, talent, and treasure to God, recognizing all that He has given to us. It is important to remember that stewardship is a way of life, and not a program. True Catholic stewardship involves an ongoing call to live as followers of Christ. It takes time to find and define personal goals. You can begin by examining your personal

commitments to the parish. How do you live your faith in your daily life with your family and friends? How much time do you spend in daily prayer, going to Mass, or being involved in parish ministries and activities? What percentage of your income should you give back to God every week? What talents do you have that could be used to strengthen our parish family? In the coming months, we will be increasing and intensifying our education and communication on stewardship. We will be developing a better understanding of how stewardship is a way of responding to God’s call to discipleship. And with God’s help, changes will occur in each of our hearts as we devote ourselves to a stewardship renewal within our parish. Examine how you are currently responding to God’s call to stewardship. If God called you home tomorrow, would He proclaim, “Well done, my good and faithful servant”?
¿Qué Significa
MAYORDOMÍA?
¿Q

The Best Time You Will Spend on Earth
ver since Maria Burt became a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society in 2014, the Lord has worked marvels in her life, revealing Himself to her in intimate, life-changing ways. “The Nocturnal Adoration Society only has adoration once a month, and I loved going so much that I could hardly wait a whole month to go again,” she says. “At one point, I had an overwhelming feeling that God was really, truly present in adoration. It struck me that the same Jesus that was once walking on the earth in Jerusalem was also actually there in the Eucharist. Once I realized this, I just couldn’t stop going.” One good thing led to another good thing, and Maria soon began finding every opportunity she could to meet Our Lord in adoration. “I started going to adoration regularly at the Monastery of the Infant Jesus in Lufkin as well,” she says. “Soon after that, Fr. Denzil Vithanage began exposing Our Lord in adoration at our parish, and he wanted people to sign up to cover hours, so I began coming.” Looking back, Maria is deeply grateful that she accepted Christ’s merciful invitation to spend quality time with Him in the Blessed Sacrament whenever she can. “Adoration is everything to me,” she says. “I now go every single morning! It gives me so much joy and peace to get through the day. It is hard to even put into words what I receive from Jesus in adoration. It is such a privilege for me to kneel in front of Our Lord, the King of the Universe. There really aren’t even words to explain it. In adoration, He looks right at you and speaks to you. It is such a blessing, and it gives so much hope to the world.” Currently, adoration is offered at our parish from about 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., and is mainly coordinated by Fr. Denzil, along with the help of Maria Burt and Maribel Olivares.
“We are doing very well and all of the hours are covered with two people taking each hour,” Maria says. “However, we are really looking for people to commit to pray for an hour any time between 6 and 9 p.m. Our goal is to hopefully have perpetual adoration in the future.”
If you would like to find out how to spend the “best time you will spend on earth” in adoration, or to obtain a substitute to fill your assigned hour, please contact the parish office at 936-634-6833 or Maria Burt at 936-208-3476. The weekly sign-up sheet for adoration is located at the entrance to our parish. 4
Adoración:
D

New School Year Brings Exciting Developments with a
Strong Catholic Foundation
I
n April 2008, Pope Benedict XVI eloquently told Catholic educators that Catholic academic institutions are “a place to encounter the living God.” Our community is blessed with just such an institution — St. Patrick’s Catholic School, where students ages 3 to eighth grade experience a quality education, while also learning more about the faith. Last school year, the staff and students were able to navigate the COVID-19 protocols and stay open all year. “We are so thankful to everyone who united to make this all work,” says Mrs. Lou McKay, Principal. “I am thankful to those who prayed for us through the last year.” Mrs. McKay admits the year flew by, and now she’s ready to begin a new year for 2021-2022, hopefully with a more normal approach. She is excited for the opportunity to have students break out of their “bubbles” to mingle with other classes and grades. The “bubbles” were used to keep students in small groups as a COVID-19 precaution. “We finished the year with a heart full of gratitude,” she says. “It is only through Jesus we were able to navigate all of this. We learned to be more loving and merciful.” One area that required some attention and adjustment was technology. But as our school staff reconvenes for this fall, they will be able to take all they have learned and apply it for this new

There is still room for improvement to make technology work even better for the learning environment at St. Patrick’s, and the school will also be opening a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) room this year. Another change is that we now have a newly appointed principal. After serving three years as the Interim Principal and kindergarten teacher, Mrs. McKay is Principal and will no longer work in a classroom. While she will miss being in the classroom after 25 years, she looks forward to the new role with great anticipation. “I love that in administration, I get to see with a deeper lens what the school is made of, the heart of the school,” she says. “I will miss the excitement of the continued on page 8

El Nuevo año Escolar trae Desarrollos Emocionantes con
una Base Católica Fuerte
E

There are also new staff members, including Mrs. Maria Jones and Mrs. Monica Scurlock. Mrs. Judith McKinney will celebrate her 25th year as a teacher at St. Patrick’s. The 2021-2022 school year will be another opportunity to evangelize the next generation. Catholic education offers the opportunity to teach students book knowledge and introduce the Catholic faith and prayer. “The kids learn that Jesus is working with you all the time,” Mrs. McKay says. “They not only get to live their faith at school, but they also get to take that home with them.” Mrs. McKay also wants to thank Fr. Denzil Vithanage for his support of the school. She feels blessed to have him in Lufkin. She enthusiastically anticipates a year full of reading and writing and learning about Jesus. “After a difficult year last year, we have a new beginning, a fresh year,” Mrs. McKay says. “The last year helped us appreciate what we take for granted in all areas of our lives.”

Students and staff finished the 2020-2021 school year with “a heart full of gratitude,” says Mrs. McKay.
Catholic education offers the opportunity to teach students book knowledge and introduce the Catholic faith and prayer.
Our Parish Youth Ministry Is Back to the Business of Growing in Faith
F
ollowing a pandemic-induced hiatus, St. Patrick Youth Ministry is up and running full throttle! The kickoff began this summer with a block party attended by 35 parish teens, complete with Bingo, outdoor games, a photo booth, plenty of food and prizes, as well as night prayer. “It was a great turnout of kids,” says youth minister Mary Zamora. “And it was so good to see so many come out after being gone for so long.” Also this summer, the parish youth enjoyed a picnic day at Boykin Springs Recreation Area. They continue to build relationships and are revamping the upcoming calendar. Mary is excited to once again offer service opportunities and attend the diocesan youth conference.
“For me, it was hard not to be present with the kids,” she says. “It just goes to show you that it is easy to take for granted human interaction and that we need other people to help us walk on our faith journey.” Despite working full-time and caring for two small children, Mary finds the time to faithfully volunteer alongside her husband, Miguel. The couple has been directing the youth for over five years — they look forward to every youth event and feel edified by the shared experience. Having both attended the program as teens, they hope to pass on a love and knowledge of the Catholic faith to future generations. “It helps me grow in my faith when I see them working and growing in the knowledge of Catholicism,”
Mary says. “It touches my heart to see them so involved and so willing to learn more. It keeps me going and encourages me to find new ways to help and reach them.” Moving forward, the youth group will meet every Sunday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Youth Room of the Faith Formation Building. All teens from eighth to 12th grades are invited to attend. Meetings consist of an icebreaker game followed by catechetical instruction and “hang-out” time. There are occasional outdoor activities, such as scavenger hunts, as well as movie and pizza nights. Whether you are a curious youth or an enthusiastic volunteer, St. Patrick Youth Group would love to see you at the next meeting. It is so great to be back!
The invitation to get involved extends beyond our teens. Volunteers are always welcome! Interested volunteers can contact Mary Zamora at 936-414-9768 or by email at mwallace9158@gmail.com. All that is necessary is a willing heart, a short ethics training class provided by the diocese, and a background check.

Nuestro Ministerio Juvenil Parroquial ha Vuelto al Negocio de Crecer en la Fé
D

November. The Renewal is our annual chance to ask ourselves how we prioritize the way we use God’s gifts in the Church. We will make written commitments to ourselves and to God concerning how we will be more devoted with our use of time (using our time on earth wisely; making time for personal prayer, family prayer, and quality time with friends and loved ones); talent (using our God-given gifts to strengthen the Church through service to parish ministries and other activities), and treasure (the wise and just management of our financial resources; giving a proportionate amount of my income to the parish). As we strive to develop stewardship as a way of life at St. Patrick, the support and involvement of each individual parishioner are necessary to sustain the life of our parish. All of you have a place here, and all of you have a role to fill in the life of the parish as we live our lives as disciples of Christ. dones de Dios en la Iglesia.
