NEW SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAM 2018 TRIENNIAL CONVENTION

INTRODUCING OUR NEW WEBSITE

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE “Catholic Financial Life is financially strong and growing. In fact, we have never been stronger. ”

President & CEO Bill O’Toole addressing delegates at the 2018 Triennial Convention.

At our recent Triennial Convention, we celebrated our 150-year anniversary. This is an accomplishment that few businesses have achieved and is a result of our focus on serving you and your loyalty to our Society. We now protect more families, give back more in member benefits, and make a greater impact in parishes, schools and local communities than at any other time in our history. Catholic Financial Life is financially strong and growing. In fact, we have never been stronger. How was this accomplished … by diligently focusing on meeting and exceeding your expectations. We strive to do that by keeping our members’ best interest at the heart of our mission, vision, values and strategic pathways. Mission is foundational and describes the purpose of our Society. Vision is aspirational and articulates what we strive to achieve. Our values are inspirational, guiding and informing all that we do. And the strategic pathways are directional, helping to prioritize and organize the Society’s energy and resources. As we build the Society to succeed for the benefit of generations to come, we will face our challenges head-on, guided by the four elements listed above, and invoking the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. We will continue to expand our fraternal impact which makes us different. Together, we will continue to move the Society Always Forward. Fraternally,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ “Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.” – Proverbs 4:25 Catholic Financial Life was founded in 1868 by Milwaukee’s first Archbishop, John Martin Henni, and 21 Catholic business leaders. They envisioned a unique way to protect Catholics and their families … a different way to heal the wounds left by the American Civil War that ended three years prior. The veterans, widows and orphans they saw throughout Wisconsin needed something innovative and forward-looking. During Catholic Financial Life’s Triennial Convention this past September, we celebrated our Society’s founding principles. However, we celebrated them the best way possible by focusing our attention not on what was, but on what is yet to be. The Convention theme of Always Forward built on the exhortation found in the Book of Proverbs “let your eyes look directly forward.” As a faith-based, financial services organization, our mission begins with the words, “serve God through serving others.” So, I challenge you to respond to these questions: • How will we reach more families that need the financial security we provide? • How will we do more to minister to the poor, suffering and those with special needs? • How will we increase support necessary for parishes, schools and other nonprofits to thrive? Ours is a noble mission as necessary and relevant today as it was when we started. And these are important issues that members of Catholic Financial Life have been helping to address for 150 years. May each one of us strive to live our mission and be Christ to one another, continuing to move Always Forward. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki Archbishop of Milwaukee Catholic Financial Life’s Spiritual Director Read more on the web www.catholicfinanciallife.org

FALL 2018 CATHOLIC FINANCIAL LIFE 5

THE SEASON OF GIVING Christmas is truly a wonderful time of year. For many of us, this includes spending time with family and opening presents under the tree. Not everyone is this fortunate. Here are a few suggestions on how you can celebrate Christ’s hope and love by helping those less fortunate this holiday season.

Ring bells for the Salvation Army

Donate to a local food bank

When you think of the Salvation Army during Christmas time, bell ringers with the red kettles outside of many local stores may come to mind. Make a difference this holiday season by becoming a bell ringer to help feed those less fortunate in your community.

This is the time of year when those less fortunate struggle to access food for their families. Consider purchasing a few extra canned goods next time you’re out grocery shopping and donate them to your local food bank.

Participate in a giving tree While you’re picking up gifts for family and friends, why not grab an extra gift for a child who might not be getting any gifts? Participate in a local giving tree or organize one yourself! Here’s how they work: Hang tags on a Christmas tree with a child’s age and gender on it, select a tag, purchase a gift and place it under the tree. Bring the joy of Christmas to a child in need.

Visit your local nursing home or facility that helps those with special needs Many residents in nursing homes and special needs facilities may not have visitors during the holiday season. Stop over during visiting hours to bring Christmas cards or to spend time with the residents.

Do something good for your neighbor Know of a neighbor who is alone this Christmas or new to the neighborhood? Consider baking a few extra cookies to share or inviting them over for Christmas dinner.

Volunteer at a soup kitchen or meal program Churches, soup kitchens and local organizations such as Saint Vincent de Paul are always looking for volunteers to help serve and prepare meals. See where help is needed in your community.

Donate your time or tre a sure to a local animal shelter Share some time and love with our four-legged friends at the local animal shelter. Volunteer at the shelter or bring in toys and treats. Either way, your help will be appreciated. Celebrate the reason of the season by giving to those who need it most. Check out websites such as www.volunteermatch.org or www.nationalservice.gov/serve to find volunteer opportunities in your area.

NEW CHAPTER PROGRAM FOR SPECIAL NEEDS INDIVIDUALS In celebration of Catholic Financial Life’s 150-year history of helping families remain strong and secure, and our longstanding tradition of supporting members with special needs and their families, the Society will launch a new Match Fund program beginning January 1, 2019. A two-year pilot project called the Special Needs Chapter Program, will provide up to $500 annually in additional Match Funds to chapters that sponsor a fundraising activity benefiting an individual or family of an individual with special needs, or a group that supports those with special needs or their caregivers. The announcement was presented as a resolution during the 2018 Triennial Convention by Tammy Gaszak, member of the Fraternal Leaders Advisory Group (FLAG), who helped develop the new program. Since 2015, 23 families have taken advantage of our uninsurable child benefit including Fidelity Mette (pictured above). Her parents and six siblings are all Catholic Financial Life members. When other insurance companies would have turned her away because of her special needs, Catholic Financial Life warmly embraced Fidelity as a member of the Catholic Financial Life family!
