Play therapy room expands Cana’s capabilities Congratulations to Esther Brandt, LCMFT, who recently earned credentials as a Registered Play TherapistTM (RPT). As an RPT, Esther utilizes play therapy techniques to increase emotional intelligence and coping skills, and decrease behaviors for both children and adults. Cana Counseling now offers a dedicated play therapy room within its offices at the St. Joseph Pastoral Center in Wichita. Cana encourages and strengthens Christian marriages, families, children, individuals and groups so they can maintain a sense of dignity, hope and well-being in relationships and in their genuine, authentic selves.

New Adult Day Services campus opens this spring Bright and huge. Those are two of the words that Dana Bond, program director, uses to describe the space that will become home to Adult Day Services this spring. The multi-million dollar renovation project at the former Michener Elementary School in Wichita is nearing completion and the transformation from school building to non-residential adult care home is incredible. “The space is very bright and welcoming! And HUGE!” Dana says. “Lots of space for the participants to enjoy engaging in activities.” The new building offers 26,500 square feet of space, or about 11,000 more than what ADS is leaving behind. The new space was designed with the needs of program participants in mind, with large doorways and wide hallways, smooth polished concrete floors and 10 spacious program rooms. A large multipurpose room allows for communal dining and large

group activities, while 23 ADA-accessible bathrooms, three large changing rooms and a roll-in shower room will make meeting daily hygiene needs a breeze. Dana expects two areas to quickly become client favorites: a new sensory room inside the building and an accessible recreation area outside. The sensory room will help participants develop coping skills for external stimuli, while the outdoor space, to be constructed this summer, includes a splash pad, canopy-covered picnic area, percussion and tactile equipment, swinging equipment and a large multi-purpose area for a variety of activities. The entire area will be encompassed by a wide, concrete walking path and will be fenced. A public open house is planned for mid-June to conclude the Building Families, Enriching Lives capital campaign which funded the renovations.

Adult Day Services is enrolling There are immediate openings to enroll new participants in the day programs at ADS. The quality day programs are designed for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and seniors coping with Alzheimer’s, dementia or loneliness.
