A Message from the Bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As we reflect on the year 2014 at Catholic Charities we see a year of expanded welcome, hospitality and service. In 2014, as a result of the generosity of so many, Catholic Charities was able to create a new space of welcome and more than double the capacity of the La Crosse Warming Center with a move of the Warming Center, the Immigration staff, the St. Lawrence Community Services staff and Representative Payee staff to a new location. We have added extended outreach services in the Prairie du Chien community with our Hands of Hope program which matches volunteers with community members in need. Across the diocese we have continued to reach out in an effort to build relationships and provide service to those in need. In an echo of Matthew 25 the Holy Father, Pope Francis, teaches, “Poverty is learned with the humble, the poor, the sick and all those who are on the existential peripheries of life. Theoretical poverty is of no use to us. Poverty is learned by touching the flesh of the poor Christ, in the humble, the poor, the sick, in children.” Catholic Charities, through its staff and volunteers, with the generosity of hundreds of good people in our diocesan communities is serving as a visible sign of God’s love to all of mankind regardless of race, religion or background. Catholic Charities’ staff and volunteers are there on our behalf, “touching the flesh of the poor Christ.” Thank you for your commitment to the work of Catholic Charities. Without the gifts of your time and talents as volunteers and treasure as donors, Catholic Charities would be a noble idea, but the aid to those in poverty and on the margins would remain theoretical. A Message from the Executive Director of Catholic Charities Dear Friends, When I came into the office this morning, I had a voice mail that said, “I’m an old person and I would like to share an idea with someone.” Her voice and message got my attention and I called her back immediately. During our conversation she said that she felt isolated and helpless because she couldn’t drive and had no way of getting around. She asked if volunteers could help the elderly in the community by driving them to where they need to go. We talked about Catholic Charities “Hands of Hope” program in Prairie du Chien where we connect volunteers with people that need help, whether its a ride to the doctor, supermarket or a meeting. She was so grateful. What she was talking about was the need to build a community; in other words, people helping each other, listening to each other, sharing our pains, hopes; in short, our lives. Jean Vanier, in his book Community and Growth, mentions the importance of living in a community as a means to be “all we can be” and to be happy. He says that each individual is an indispensable link in a chain; no matter how small the link is it needs to remain strong, because if it breaks, the entire community is at risk and can perish. At Catholic Charities we strive to serve those members of our community that are vulnerable and need our help. We might think that they are the weak link in our chain, but it may be that they are really the strong link that reminds us that we need to help each other to survive. It may be that our selfishness of our belief that I’m self-sufficient, that I don’t need anyone, is the weak link. Every day I’m amazed and humbled by the generosity of so many people in our community who give so much of their time and talent to serve and support the people we serve. Without our Volunteers and donors, we could not do His work and establish God’s Kingdom on earth. We live in a place of such natural beauty that is breathtaking, but most importantly, we live in a community that cares. Our job is to discover daily the goodness of God’s creation in each other and in nature. By filling our hearts with joy and Christ-like attitudes, we will discover that we can better solve the serious problems of homelessness, hunger, injustice and evil. Christ has triumphed! Building Hope
in our
Communities
We live in a society that is extraordinarily blessed in so many ways. However, there are many in our communities who are most vulnerable, who live their lives on the fringe of society; lives that witness poverty, mental illness, hunger and displacement who don’t benefit from many of these blessings. Meet Roger. Roger is one of the homeless in our community who came in to our shelter on a cold winter night. When he arrived, he was very quiet and kept to himself. As the nights passed, Roger endeared himself easily to others and many of our guests and staff began to watch over Roger. Staff quickly surmised that while Roger was receiving Social Security, he was not able to cash his checks due to lack of identification. Catholic Charities staff became even more concerned when we learned that others in the community were “helping” him and taking advantage of his kindness with money. Our Warming Center Staff recognized Roger’s needs and referred him to our St. Lawrence Community Services’ Staff. They worked together to help Roger get an I.D. When Roger did not feel confident going to the bank alone, staff walked with him to help him through the banking process. Our collaboration with others in the community helped us in finding a landlord with an apartment to rent and our Representative Payee Program employee continues to work with Roger to help him budget his funds and make ends meet. Roger is just one of the many we continue to walk with and share the journey. We continue to work with guests through the La Crosse Franciscan Hospitality House, our Sojourner House in Eau Claire and our Wausau Community Warming Center. Catholic Charities is available across the diocese. We are there to share the journey with those in need. We are there to build relationships and share hope throughout our diocese! Catholic Charities continues to work with many individuals, communities, churches and organizations to assist the most vulnerable of our society. We have witnessed many in our community who have been taken advantage of because of the inability to know how to work within societies’ systems. We have stepped up to assist individuals to find a way out of homelessness. Not only do we work with others in our community to provide a place of refuge for those who would otherwise not have a warm meal and a place to sleep, but Catholic Charities continues to work through St. Lawrence Community Services and collaborates with many community organizations to be on hand to work with folks like Roger.
Words from a guest... I would just like to let someone be aware of the terrific staff that was on duty this evening. Unfortunately I can’t give them all the credit because each time I have been here the staff and volunteers have been incredible. The service and dedication not to mention the devotion to what they do is a God send. Please keep up this incredible service that is provided to us; the less fortunate and those down on our luck. You guys are wonderful. Don’t ever lose hope!

Hours of service were provided to students with behavioral disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and other developmental disabilities to help them stay in their homes and be successful in school with the help of our Disability Services Program. Volunteer hours were provided to the various programs and offices across the diocese that help Catholic Charities provide help and hope to those in need.
