We’d like to say thank you to the 250+ people who contributed to the project, whether that was coming up with a great idea at one of our pop-up consultations or rolling up your sleeves and getting handy with a hammer during the building of the sites!
EHILL RO A
We worked with hundreds of people who live or study in the area, giving people the opportunity to get involved with the design and build of the sites.
The project has been delivered by Phoenix Community Housing, adventure learning charity Wide Horizons and design studio make:good.
We also hope that these new spaces will deter fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour in the area, issues that local people really care about.
PETER PAN’S PARK We had a great time talking to local residents Joan and Joyce about this particular spot. They used to come here when it was called Peter Pan's Pool, a 'children's pleasureland' that first opened in 1922. They told us lovely stories of rowing around the boating lake in little boats and going on all the rides at the fun fair. After hearing this, there was only one thing for it a boat sculpture, obviously! With the help of local volunteers we also created homes for birds in the trees and a bug village on the riverbank.
CHURCHDOWN GALLERY This once unassuming space is now the home to a gallery! At all the workshops we held at schools we’d see lots of fun and bright displays of students’ work. When we asked them if they’d like their work displayed on this site the answer was a resounding yes! Now artwork of students from Bonus Pastor Catholic College, Downderry Primary School and New Woodlands School is on display and the community get to enjoy art on their own doorstep.
DOWNHAM WAY NATURE GARDEN Back in 1927, King George V and Queen Mary came to plant a tree on this very site to mark and celebrate the 17,000 home being built by the L.C.C. A tree is still the focal point of that site, but rather than standing all alone it is surrounded by hand painted planters and pretty flowers. A fitting tribute, don’t you think? With the help of some amazing volunteers we stencilled and hammered in 414 blocks to create the planters for this site!
ROUNDTABLE ROAD NATURE GARDEN This site is very close to Knights Temple Grove School. When we spoke to people they said they’d really like somewhere to sit and chat during the school run. Lots of local kids got involved with the build, and helped us plant all the flowers. A tranquil space has now been created where mums and dads can catch up and the kids can watch out for all the mini beasts.
SEDGEHILL ROAD NATURE GARDEN When we popped up to talk about this site a lot of people mentioned all the birds and wildlife in the area. Someone piped up to say that bird houses should be built for them, we agreed, and so did everyone else! The site now features some bespoke and rather fetching bird and bug houses as well as some beautiful flowers for all the bees and butterflies to feed from.
