You become a “recruited student-athlete” at a particular college if any coach or representative of the college’s athletics interest (booster or representative) approaches you (or any member of your family) about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college. Activities by coaches or boosters that cause you to become a recruited prospective student-athlete are: -providing you with an official visit; -visiting you or any other member of your family anywhere other than the college campus; -placing more than one telephone call to you or any other member of your family; or -Signing a National Letter of Intent.

To practice or play during your freshman year, you must meet the provisions of NCAA Bylaw 14.3, which include: (a) graduating from high school, (b) achieving a minimum cumulative grade point average in 14 core courses, and achieving a corresponding minimum combined score on the SAT, or a minimum sum total score on the ACT as determined by the NCAA Initial Eligibility Center. ADMISSIONS Inquiries regarding admission to Catawba College are always warmly welcomed. If you are interested in joining the Catawba community you should apply for admission anytime after your sixth semester of high school. Catawba follows the usual guidelines for “rolling admissions� and, therefore, has no closing date for accepting applications. Applying early will ensure you an early response from the college. In your application, you are asked to provide a wide variety of information relating to your academic and co-curricular background. This information is used to help determine your potential to profit from, as well as contribute to, the Catawba community. you must complete a minimum of 16 units of high school course work, 12 of which should be in academic subjects. The following college preparatory course work is strongly recommended: four units of English; three units of mathematics (Algebra I or above); three units of Laboratory Science; three units of Social Science; and two units of foreign language. your admission to Catawba also will be evaluated by class rank, grade point average, SAT or ACT examination scores, and academic course selection. Dr. Craig Turner President Dr. W. Craig Turner became the 21st President of Catawba College in 2008. He came to Salisbury from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, where he served as President for six years. Dr. Turner joined the administration and faculty of Hardin-Simmons University in 1992, serving as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of English from 1992 to 1996. He then became Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer until he was named Chief Operating Officer in June 2000. Dr. Turner then served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at HSU for a year before becoming the 14th President of Hardin-Simmons University on June 1, 2001. During his tenure as President, HSU saw record enrollments (2,435 in the fall of 2007), record endowment and similar funds ($121.5 million in 2007), and surplus budgets. HSU finished the most successful fund raising campaign in its history in December of 2006, having raised $49.7 million. The University successfully completed its Commission on Colleges reaccreditation in 2007, has been chosen as a Top Tier institution by U.S. News & World Report for six consecutive years and a Best in the West institution by Princeton Review for five consecutive years. Dr. Turner was active in the Abilene, Texas, community, serving on the Boards of organizations such as United Way of Abilene, the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, Serenity House, the Abilene Philharmonic, and the Abilene Humanities Council. He has also served on the Boards of the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities, the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas, the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Schools, and the Consortium for Global Education, which he currently chairs. Dr. Turner came to HSU from Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi, where he was Head of the English Department and Professor of English from 1985 to 1992. While there, he was chosen as “Teacher of the year,” cited as “Scholar of the year,” and elected President of the Faculty. H is wife, Annette, served the Clinton Independent School District as a first grade teacher. Previously, he served as a tenured Assistant and Associate Professor of English at Texas A&M University from 1976 to 1985 and as a visiting instructor at Baylor University in 1974-1975. Dr. Turner earned the Doctor of Philosophy degree from Tulane University in British and American Literature in 1977, and earned two degrees from Baylor: the Master of Arts in English in 1971 and the Bachelor of Arts in English and History in 1969. He has edited three books—The Poet Robert Browning and his Kinsfolk, Critical Essays in American Humor, and Critical Essays in Eudora Welty—as well as having published more than two dozen scholarly articles, essays, and chapters in books. Since he greatly enjoys teaching, he tries to schedule a course every other year to stay active in the profession and in the classroom. Dr. Turner and wife Annette have two grown children: Scott, a Development Officer for Texas Tech University, and Shannon Hays, an attorney, writer, and mother. Shannon and her husband Mike, a Marine Corps Captain, have twin daughters, Madeleine and Peyton.

Dennis Davidson Director of Athletics Dennis Davidson has been director of athletics since May of 1996. He came to Catawba College in July 1984 as director of public information and moved totally into sports information one year later. In 1991, Davidson was promoted to assistant to the athletic director, and in 1993, he was promoted to assistant athletic director for game operations, in addition to the sports information duties. Davidson oversees the entire athletic program at Catawba. He has also been responsible for securing athletic advertising and sponsorships and has had significant roles in Catawba’s Sports Hall of Fame inductions, the South Atlantic Conference Spring Sports Festival and the year-end athletic ceremony. He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and was a member of the regional advisory committee for NCAA Division II football (2002- 04). Davidson is currently the South Atlantic Conference AD liaison for baseball and women’s basketball and chairman of the SAC Athletic Directors Council. Davidson was also highly involved in the planning of the Hayes Field House and Shuford Stadium reconstruction. He also has directed the highly popular Sam Moir Christmas Basketball Classic since 1996. A former member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Davidson was chairman of the NAIA District 26 SIDs and the Carolinas Conference Awards Committee for three years (1986-89). He was voted by his peers as District 26 SID of the year for 1987-88 and 1992-93. Born in Statesville, but reared in Salisbury, Davidson graduated in 1977 from West Rowan High School, where he was a fouryear letterman in baseball, earning All-North Piedmont Conference honors as a senior. Davidson earned a bachelor’s degree in English at Catawba in 1981, working as a part-time writer at The Salisbury Post during his college years. He actually began at The Post as a 16-year-old sportswriter in 1975. A member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church, Davidson is president of the Westside Pool Association. He is also a member of the PTA at Southeast Middle School. Davidson resides in Salisbury with his wife, Toni, a registered nurse at Lexington Memorial Hospital. ATHLETIC TRAININg ALySSA CRANS, ATC, LAT Alyssa Crans came to Catawba College in 2010 as an Intern/ Assistant athletic trainer. She provides assistant coverage in the fall with Football, and in the spring with Softball. Crans graduated with a Bachelors of Science in 2009 from Alfred University in Alfred, Ny. She currently resides in Mooresville, NC.

Lamar Dorton Athletic Training Room

The Lamar Dorton athletic training room is located in the Miriam and Robert Hayes Field House, which was completed in 2002. Football, M/W soccer, M/W lacrosse and softball use this facility to provide the medical care for these six Catawba sports. Also located in the Hayes Field House includes coaches offices, meeting and classrooms, locker rooms and a weight room. Athletes receive injury prevention, assessment, management and rehabilitation here. There are eight treatment tables and 5 taping tables available. The facility provides state-of-the art modality treatment, which includes ultrasound, electrical stimulation, diathermy, cold laser and a hydrotherapy room for hot or cold whirlpools. In addition, a portion of the facility is equipped with rehabilitation equipment such as a stationary bike, stair stepper, physioballs and free weights. A separate room is designated for the Biodex machine, which performs isokinetic muscle testing. Also included is the head athletic trainerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office and a private physicianâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exam room.

Nan Whitley Head Coach Nan Whitley enters her 28th season as coach of the women's softball program at Catawba. During seven seasons of slow pitch softball (1983-89), her teams won 69 percent of their games (178-79). Whitley, with the assistance of her husband, Cecil, won five slow-pitch conference or district championships in the 1980s. In 1990, Catawba and the entire South Atlantic Conference moved to fast-pitch competition. In 20 years of fast-pitch competition, the Lady Indians have posted a 402-492-3, including a school-record 41 wins in 2007. Catawba had recorded a then schoolrecord 28 wins in both 2004 and 2006. Overall, Coach Whitley's record stands at 581-570-3. Over the years, the Whitleys and their players have developed familylike relationships. The 1987 team stands out more than any other, due to its 39-7 record. The 39 victories are the most in a single season for any sport in the history of Catawba College athletics, although the volleyball team equaled the mark in 1992.

Whitley hails 1999 13-30 3-11 from Ephrata, Pa., 2000 13-27-1 4-11-1 where she enjoyed an 2001 10-31 3-11 outstanding athletic 2002 14-40-1 0-14 career at Ephrata Area 20-24 5-9 High School. She came 2003 28-29 6-8 to Catawba and played 2004 field hockey and soft- 2005 27-25 7-5 ball. She graduated in 2006 28-23 9-5 1974 with a bachelor's 2007 41-19 7-7 degree in health and 2008 26-25 4-10 physical education. 25-19 10-6 Whitley served as the 2009 29-24 5-11 Catawba field hockey 2010 coach from 1982-2000, 21 yrs 402-492-3 102-159-1 posting a 128-163-13 record and a Deep South Association championship in 1988. Due to her outstanding accomplishments as a two-sport athlete and coach at Catawba, Whitley became the first woman inducted into the school's Sports Hall of Fame on April 3, 1993. Nan and Cecil reside in Salisbury. They have a daughter Adrian, an assistant with the softball program, and a son, Alex.

Shane Prescott begins his fifth season as an assistant coach with the Catawba College softball team in 2010. Prescott came to Catawba from Pfeiffer University where he was with the Falcon program for six seasons and was head coach the last four years.

Adrian Gantt is in her 11th season as an assistant with the Catawba College softball program. She serves as the pitching coach. For four seasons, Gantt was the head coach of the Catawba field hockey team. A 1998 graduate of Catawba, Gantt earned a bachelor of arts degree in biology. Gantt received a master of science degree in exercise science at Appalachian State in 2000.

A 1995 graduate of Randolph Community College, Prescott earned an associate degree in applied science. He graduated in 1999 from Blue Ridge Healing Arts Academy with a license to practice massage and bodywork therapy.

Gantt was a two-sport athlete at Catawba, playing four years of field hockey and softball. She was a two-time All-American in field hockey and twice earned All-South Atlantic Conference honors in softball. Gantt received the Lomax Award for Catawbaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top senior female athlete in 1998.

Prescott resides in Concord with his wife, Jennifer. They have two daughters, Adda (7) and Emme (2).

At East Rowan High School, Gantt earned nine letters. She earned all-county and all-conference honors in cross country and helped the softball team to a pair of state tournament appearances. Gantt and her husband, Jim, reside in Salisbury. Jim is the Catawba head baseball coach.

ALLIE MARSHALL Graduate Assistant Allie Marshall is in her first season as an assistant coach with the Catawba softball program. She is a 2010 graduate of Catawba College with a degree in physical education. At Catawba, Marshall was a two-time All-South Atlantic Conference and all-region performer. She earned SAC Freshman of the Year honors in 2007 after setting school marks with 15 home runs and 74 hits. Marshall set the school mark with 70 RBI as a senior. Over her four years, she batted .376 with 43 home runs and 202 RBI. Both of those are career marks as is her 237 hits.
