Coal Heritage Trail Howard and Torbanlea Just off the Bruce Highway north of Maryborough is the small rural retreat of Aldershot. Further along are the former coal mining towns of Howard and Torbanlea. Both towns are filled with country charm, old fashioned pubs and a number of important historical buildings, including the homes of former Prime Minister Andrew Fisher and Dame Annabelle Rankin, Queensland's first female Senator. The Burrum District Museum at Howard houses an impressive collection of mining memorabilia. There are great swimming, fishing and camping spots on the nearby Burrum River.

TORBANLEA

Torbanlea is a former coal mining town rich with mining history and heritage buildings, including a 100 year old pub. At Howard you will find a number of quaint old buildings, including Van Cooten’s, an old time working drapery store, a historic post office and the homes of a former prime minister

and Queensland’s first female Senator. Coal miners moved into the area as early as 1864 and the Burrum District Museum houses an impressive collection of mining and farming memorabilia. Country markets are held on the first Saturday of every month. There are great swimming and fishing spots along the nearby Burrum River. Howard also has a lovely country golf course. Follow the Route 12 Tourist Drive to Hervey Bay or return to Maryborough via the Bruce Highway. Alternatively you can continue the Burrum Coast Discovery Drive to Toogoom and Burrum Heads.
