A mask of colored tears de constructs a beautiful face and creates a seduction while inspiring the viewer to imagine a narrative to this piece. S / CASTRO — 12

“Scream and Scream Again” movie poster - Unknown

A beautiful woman is deconstructed as she is falling into acid. A mask reveals the skeletal layer of the body and her toned, slim legs and reaching hand seduce. S / CASTRO — 12

“Title” - Unknown

“You Are Not Human” Abbey Watkins

A personification of death masks a woman holding a seductive pose. Her skeletal form replaces the epidermal layer on the body.

A glimpse of a ghostly woman is rendered in a traditional beautiful sense with glamour in her face and long hair with a seductive look. Mystery is evoked by the animals in black magic. S / CASTRO — 12

INITIAL SKETCHES

Section 1

Masks on Editorials The first stream of exploration was investigated on editorial-like pictures that explored the use of facades by literally overlaying painted masks or by using technical photography shots. With these exercises I learned how a mask, literal or not, can be used to obscure but at the same time reveal.

“Bitch”

Masks reveal who the character is.

Section 2

Masks on Advertisement The second stream of examination was executed on existing advertising where masks were utilized to transform the piece to have a new meaning. The masks reappropriated the content into a new narrative. The transformation serves as a commentary about our society and what it portrays to the public.

“Translucent”

“Underneath”

While the masking hides the face, the identity is still present.

Section 3

Personifying Death The last stream explored the personification and recontextualizing of death. This study served as a way to transform a negative theme into a different light. In this analysis, I also used the shirt as a canvas overlaying a body and played with masking the anatomical placement.
