The 2012 Castle Rock WineFest is proud to present more than two dozen top Colorado wineries showcasing their wine selections and spotlighting today's winemakers who have revitalized not only a Colorado tradition, but for many, a family legacy. Winemaking began on Colorado's Western Slope more than a century ago. Modern vineyards feature the classic European wine grape varieties and the art of winemaking is thriving in Colorado. From deep Merlots and expressive Chardonnays to elegant Rieslings and Cabernets, Colorado wines consistently win top national and international awards. Most of these Colorado wineries are small, family-owned estates that have earned a well-deserved reputation for creating a wide variety of premium wines. Colorado wineries carry on the rich tradition of their ancestors, immigrants from middle Europe and Italy, who came seeking their fortune in this part of the west. The combination of a n earlier than us ual primary, Colorado fires, and redistricting resulte d in an intense e lection night throughout Colorado. El Paso County, which became ground zero for nasty primary battles, delayed election res ults because of the Waldo Canyon Fire in the Colorado Springs suburbs. However, final results showed that current House Majority Leader Amy Stephens pulle d out a sizeable victory over Represe ntative Marsha Looper in House District 19, capturing 59.6% of the vote to Loope r’s 40.3%.

The two colleagues were drawn into the same legislative district during the 2011 reapportionment.

Now that the primary ele ction is over, candidates have five months in front of them before the gene ral election in Novembe r. Colorado is already ground zero for the presidential e lection. There are 13 highly conteste d state house races this gene ral election. Republicans are intent on maintaining control of the State House while, with a 1 vote GOP margin, Democrats a re keen on taking back the House. It is estima ted that anywhere from $5-$7 million will be s pent by each pa rty to ensure victory in November.

DCBA Update Governor's Dea dline to Sign Bills Passes

June’s Topic: Arts, Culture, Media The Cherokee Ranch and Castle is the perfect venue for the Arts, Culture and Media session of Leadership Douglas County. With two new cultural centers finishing their first season and other programs in each community expanding, we see arts and culture as not only an enhancement to our quality of life, but also as an economic engine for Douglas County. Culture is an important part of thriving communities and it is engrained in us, we have been telling stories through paintings and songs throughout history.

The class also gained valuable information from the “Today’s Changing Media” segment with Ed Sardella, Channel 9 news (retired), and Deborah Sherman of Media Zone Consulting. Through their experiences in the media field, Ed and Deborah shared stories and discussed the media’s objectivity, and its impact on business considerations.

Leadership Douglas County’s Class of 2012 Graduation On June 6, the 2012 Leadership Douglas County Class celebrated completion of the 10-month program with their graduation held at the Cherokee Ranch and Castle.

More than 100 attendees were welcomed by Carole Schumacher, the 2012 Leadership Co-Chair and Pam Ridler, President and CEO for the Castle Rock Chamber.

The Keynote Speakers, State Representative Carole Murray and Pastor Dave Jensen, both have an impressive leadership history and strong ties to the Leadership Douglas County program. What inspiring talks the gave to the graduating class!

Although session officially ended on May 16th the Governor has been busy signing bills and the legislators just as busy attending bill signing ceremony for some of the largest bills passed this session. The Governor has 30 days from the last day of session to approve all of the bills passed during the 2012 session and special session. He approved the last 14 bills. Castle Rock Chamber proudly welcomes, Frances Owens guest speaker for this quarter’s luncheon. Frances W. Owens became First Lady of Colorado on January 12, 1999. A native of Colorado, she spent much of

her childhood in Texas, but returned to Colorado to receive a degree in Art History from the University of Colorado at Denver. As first lady, Frances volunteered her time to many charitable organizations, some of which include Anchor Cente r for the Blind, Developmental Pathways, Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, The Children’s Hospital, the Colorado Historical Society, The Colorado Autism Society, Habitat for Humanity, and Volunteers of America. She chaired the Colorado Commemorative Quarter Advisory Commission for Colorado’s quarter which was released in 2006. Ms. Owens oversaw the privately funded project of renovating and restoring the Governor’s Executive Residence which was originally constructed in 1908; as well as extensiv e renovations of the Carriage House and lower gardens.

Ms. Owens began her career campaigning and working for former U.S. Senator Bill Armstrong in the late 1970’s as well as working for the Colorado Council on Economic Education. Currently,

Town & County News & Events Local fire restrictions upgraded following statewide fireworks ban. Following Gov.

Wildfires get closer to home; Town canceling fireworks and ramping up enforcement. Wildfires continue to be a force to contend with in Colorado this spring and

John Hickenlooper's statewide fireworks ban last week, the Town of Castle Rock upgraded its fire restrictions to Stage 2 restrictions.

These new restrictions are in line with the

Castle Rock is not currently at great risk of being affected by the Waldo Canyon Fire. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has asked the public to refrain from calling 911 unless there is an actual emergency. Residents should not call to report sightings of smoke – only flames or fire. Local and national organizations, such as the Salvation Army and Red Cross, are accepting donations. Financial donations are the best way to help, the organizations say.
