Different Types of Ground Support Equipment that Depend on Caster Wheels Caster wheels are responsible for the safe movement of everything from extremely light plastic carts to aircraft engines. Here, you will discover the various types of ground support equipment utilizing some of today’s most advanced and innovative caster wheel products. Aircraft Jacks and Service Stairs Aircraft jacks and service stairs serve some important purposes in the airline industry, among others. Jacks are used to help support non-moving aircraft that may be heavier toward the rear; this support helps keep the tails of the craft from sagging or even falling toward the ground as passengers exit the aircraft from the front. Unique casters are required to move the jack from place to place, then hold it in safely in place during use. Along those same lines, aircraft service stairs are designed to give technicians access to the underside of the aircraft, and casters allow the stairs to be positioned properly before servicing. Tugs and Tractors Tugs and tractors also play important roles in airports and other facilities. They are some of the most essential equipment in the entire ground control fleet. These are designed specifically to move equipment that cannot be moved on its own, such as the carts used to move bags, mobile air conditioning, air starters, and even the carts used to clean or maintain lavatories. The casters used for tugs and tractors are incredibly heavy-duty and provide the ability to move smoothly over uneven terrain. Ground Power Units A ground power unit, more commonly known as a GPU in the industry, is designed to provide power to parked airplanes or aircraft. Many of these are stationary and built directly into the jetway, but others are mobile, which means they can be moved from place to place and used to power multiple aircraft as needed. These require excellent high-quality casters to prevent failures that may otherwise reduce power availability and delay flights. Container Loaders Container loaders also play important roles in ground support. They come in a variety of types and styles, and you will usually find more than one at most of today’s airports. These loaders are sometimes also called K-loaders thanks to the two platforms that can move independently of each other. Not only do the loaders themselves depend on casters to move over uneven terrain, but the pallets and containers on the loader itself must also have casters to help them move from the loader to the aircraft and vice-versa. Proper movement and flow is highly dependent on using the proper highquality casters for this application. Passenger Boarding Steps & Stairs Last, but most certainly not least, even the stairs that passengers use to board and deplane aircraft must be moved with casters. These stairs are designed to make the process safer, and in order to do this, they must have the right caster wheels that can lock firmly in place without swiveling or moving unexpectedly. Small units may be hand-propelled and require ergonomic casters, but others can be fitted with drive casters. Nearly all the ground support equipment found in today’s airports depends on various types and styles of caster wheels to do their jobs, and without them, the airport would not be as safe as it is today. These casters offer numerous benefits designed to enhance passenger and airport worker safety, including ergonomics, ample support, and the ability to move freely over uneven ground.
