Drummers Are Losers? The question pops up a lot. Forums Facebook, or in personal conversations. Why are drummers the least respected band member? Actually, real musicians would tell you they are the most valuable member of the band. So why is it the average person thinks the drummer is a loser? One reason could be that they are in the back and sometimes unnoticeable or that many believe that they could quickly hit a few drums and boom they are a drummer. Truly that isn’t the case at all it takes a lot of practice and dedication. A lot of times drummers have learned every instrument in the band because to understand one’s own instrument you must know everyone’s instrument. Drummers are truly the backbone of any band without them you wouldn’t have a beat and without a beat, you don’t have a band. Ask yourself, what band that doesn’t have some type of rhythm? True it takes longer to learn a guitar or bass. Singing just comes naturally, you may ask why aren’t singers disliked but that easy to answer

12 | Bella Entertainment | Issue 7

they are what people hear and focus on at concerts. So out of all three things drums, guitar, and bass; drums are the easiest to learn. So why the animosity? Even Urban Dictionary gives some pretty cheap remarks or definitions about drummers for example “a drummer is one underrated musician who plays the drum kit, and is part of the rhythm section along with the equally underrated bassist.” It goes on to explain that drummers are stereotypically portrayed as moronic, ugly, stupid, non-musicians. For one, I can personally vouch that drummers are none of those things. My question is who was the first person to speak about drummers being stupid or underrated? Why do we have these stereotypes for particular things like drummers? Do lead singers have animosity towards drummers? Is that why drummers have such a bad rep? From what I have seen in our local scene, none of that gives us any indication that, that could be true. But that’s the only examples I have to go off of. What is it like for bigger bands like Nirvana, Beatles, Ramones, NOFX, and many others? If you believe what mass media has to say, then it was the other way around for Nirvana. Supposedly, Dave Grohl had animosity towards the band’s lead singer Kurt Cobain from the start. There is a theory that Dave was part of Kurt’s death because he had such hate. But now the man is a lead singer and guitarist well respected alongside his former bandmate, and still looked at as one of the greats for drumming. All I can think of as to why such animosity would exist between anyone in a band is typical jealousy and feelings of inadequacy. From experience, people tend to resort to negativity and put those they envy down with their downfalls. They feel this will make their sense of inadequacy go away, but in reality, they are only hurting themselves and others. If people just focused on bettering themselves, they would feel so much better in their life. But we are all only human. What are your thoughts on this subject? Want your opinions on the matter to be published? Send us in your letter to the editor today at Bellaentertainmenteditor@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you. D Written by: Rhiannon Rinas

At 16, everything can feel like the end of the world. And at 16, navigating through life is difficult, especially when you’re an outsider. Meet Sam Reilly. He’s just like every other teenager, expect he’s trying to tie together the missing pieces of his broken past. That’s a sneak peep at Alfasapien: Hypro-Detach, book one by Spokane author Dezi Fuggetta. She sat down with Bella Entertainment Magazine to talk about what it takes to put together not just one book, but an entire series. It all started when Fuggetta was a freshman in high school. The 20-year-old said people would pay her to write their English essays and stories for them. At first, it was just about the extra cash, she said, but something about it become thrilling. “By my senior year, I stopped charging people for them and started writing them for free,” Fuggetta said. “That’s when I realized when you really love something and are passionate about it, the money really doesn’t matter anymore, and I haven’t stopped writing since.” Right now, Fuggetta is working as a copyeditor, a waitress, an actress for Z-Nation and is taking writing classes. She said that she also loves to act and dance because “being an extroverted author is a curse.” The Alfasapien series takes readers on the adventure of Sam trying to navigate his way through high-school friends, enemies and love. Fuggetta described Sam as “extraordinary” in that he has orange eyes, deep scars and is in “oddly good shape for a nerd.” She described the world that the book takes place in as “magical realism, because it’s

dezi Fuggetta

here on earth, so it’s human, but with magical twists and elements.” Fuggetta also said that self publishing through Amazon was the best option for her. “Not finding an agent, it kind of got me down for a little bit, but I wanted to keep the film rights.” In five years Fuggetta wants to see her books being made into movies. She also plans to continue composing another series, but that’s not all. “I would like to make enough money from my book to send myself to college to study quantum physics as well.” As for Fuggetta’s inspiration, she said she is inspired by every person she meets, “whether it is a co-worker, a barista, or a family member.” But the person that has the most power to inspire her, is herself, her own thoughts and actions, she said. Right now the Alfasapien series has five books in works. The whole series is outlined. “Its nice to have the basic points outlined, so that way I can go through and add suspense,” Fuggetta said. “I can go back into book one and foreshadow to book five.” By June you can follow Sam on his first mystical journey as faces a world filled with danger, death and revenge. BREAKOUT: Check out the Alfasapien Books: Amazon Facebook Twitter Or email the author for a signed copy at Desireefuggetta198@gmail.com

Coaster

Wanna

Be Contagious

Top 40 artist originally from Selah WA. His Hip-Hop resonates all accross Washington and his name is Coaster. Coaster started rapping at the young age of 13 by doing parodies to make his friends laugh. He’s come a long way since then with tours and an album release. Rap is a diverse industry with many artists making it huge and many falling between the cracks. So what makes Coaster different? What makes Coaster able to break free from the chains that drag most rappers down? His story. He believes that hip-hop and rap lack substance today and his lyrics come from the heart. His inspiration is life and it reflects in his music. I Wanna Be Contagious is one of those songs that brings life to the forefront of his music. It talks about how he dropped out of school and how he wants to make his dad proud. It talks about his inner demons. His lyrics are relatable and that is why he is different from the rest. Most of his inspiration comes from

life and the pain he has experienced and is experiencing. “I make music from the heart and I feel like it’s a breath of fresh air. Everybody has different lives and different struggles but nobody has walked in my shoes. I love the fact that I can share my story with the world. There’s so many different people who can relate; different races, different ages. It’s something special.” Coaster can see himself opening for larger acts over the next five years. He is already headlining his on tours in the Northwest and has a very positive outlook for the future. “Who knows, I might be headlining my own nationwide tour. I feel a bigger transition coming.” As for touring, he loves playing Spokane. His last tour kicked off here in our beautiful city. He’s toured with artists YG, Snow Tha Product, Jarren Benton, RITTZ, and MGK just to name a few.

Coaster enjoyed working with MGK so much he wants to tour with them again. “Definitely one of the craziest shows I’ve been a part of.” Coaster says he wouldn’t mind touring with G-Eazy and Kendrick Lamar as well. Don’t expect a full album to drop anytime soon. Coaster has put the album on the back burner to broaden his fan base. Instead of dropping an album, he’s been working on smaller projects. I can imagine that when his album does drop it will be greatly appreciated and anticipated; it’s been a couple years since the last album. Delicious Resturant Review & Recipies

Sweet Cravings

A

Wrtten By: Lacy Peterson

small starting up company done out of her little studio apartment. Christy Lipe’s sweet creations will have you craving some more. Christy specially made us some cupcakes to taste. Let me tell you they were to die for, I usually don’t like cupcakes because to me personally they are too dry and just don’t taste good, but Sweet Cravings cupcakes are moist and succulent. Every part of the cupcakes goes perfectly together like a well-played melody. The cupcakes she made for Bella Entertainment tasted just like a strawberry shortcake. Some had strawberry filling in the middle, and others had a strawberry shortcake Oreo in the middle. The frosting had a great consistency wasn’t too sweet either and had a perfect creamy complexion. Both the cupcakes were very delectable and were eaten faster than lightening by the Bella Entertainment staff. Christy plans to open her own cupcake food truck where she will have freshly

18 | Bella Entertainment | Issue 7

made cupcakes as well as other baked goods like brownies, cakes, cookies, and candies. I cannot wait until she opens the truck up because I could literally eat them all day, and I wouldn’t mind if I got diabetes in the process. Christy told us that the cupcakes and other baked goods won’t be fully prepared in the food truck but cooked at Kitchen Spokane own and run by Jayme Cozzetto. Kitchen Spokane is for people who don’t have the kitchen space or the money to rent a space. Kitchen Spokane is a Non-Profit organization, perfect Miss Christy, and her amazing creations. I do highly recommend the next time that you need baked goods for your big or small event to call in an order to Sweet Cravings, run and own by Miss Christy Lipe. Also keep an eye out for her food truck that will be hitting the streets of Spokane in the near future.

Deadlegs How they got started and why they think they are the punk rock revolution of Spokane. By: Jaclyn Hyde

T

his brand new band with a great name is part of the punk revolution that is sweeping across Spokane. Though their first concert was on May 28th. I know for certain that these guys are going to blow everyone’s minds as I have had the opportunity to sit in on a few of their practices and I wasn’t disappointed. With lead guitarist Zac McMaster from the former band The Cammora, Sid Broderius on bass from Cutback Davis, and Braedon Clark on drums from Punks in Drublic. This trio sounded as if they have been playing together for years. Now, as I am pretty sure you’re wondering just as much as I was about their name. Many of you either associate the word Deadlegs with working out or coitus. Well, only one of those things applies and that is coitus. We all have it, and we all enjoy it, but that’s not the point. It all started when Braedon got a text from a favorite, lovable bar manager. After getting off work and thought that he was texting his wife. Braedon gets a text “you’re going to get deadlegs tonight” Which immediately followed by another text saying “that was for my wife.” Jokingly Braedon had vowed to name a band “Deadlegs.” A year later Braedon was asked by Sid to be a part of a start20 | Bella Entertainment | Issue 7

up band. Not knowing what their band name would be Braedon suggested Deadlegs and gave the back story on it and they all fell in love with the name Deadlegs. The band is an all original band. They plan to start recording this next weekend. They also intend to do as many shows as they can so they can get the fan base that they deserve. They also want to bring back the house party as they feel this will bring them closer to their fans. Which is what their first show was. Which I feel was an excellent way to kick start their band off. If you didn’t catch the last issue of Bella where Braedon’s band Punks in Drublic was featured. Then you wouldn’t know that he has a very extensive background in music. In his early years, he began on drums eventually teaching himself how to play the guitar by listening to his favorite songs, eventually being able to create his own songs. Braedon played in many bands while he was in California growing up. Once in Washington, it didn’t take him long to become part of the music scene here in Spokane. Joining bands like Eyes like Time Machines and the Broken Thumbs. Though those bands are in the past for Braedon, he still continues going strong with Punks in Drublic, Deadlegs and one other this is in the

making. Sid has also had many bands he has been in throughout his life which has ultimately prepared him for his current band Cutback Davis. For a while, Sid had been writing songs that didn’t really fit for Cutback Davis. So he decided to begin looking for bandmates that he felt would be great to work with, and that would click well with the songs he was creating. Sid has played music since he was 13, so finding the great musicians that he did, didn’t come to easy. Forming a band from a vision on forms in their head. Zac coming from the Cammora he exudes a lot of energy and spunk for the band. Sid picked Braedon because he loved his drumming style from Punks in Drublic. May 28th was their debut to the public at a house party in Cheney WA at none other than a hobbit house. Which has some impressive history itself. The sound was a bit better than most house parties I’ve been in because of the shape of the walls acted as an amphitheater. The Deadlegs killed it that night. Everyone including myself enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see them in a bigger venue so the sound does them better justice. I see great things coming from these guys, and I hope you all do too. Enough so that you go to check them out the next time they play. You can also find them on Facebook. Make sure you give their page a like to keep up on what they are doing. We caught up with them to see what happens on the road when you play in two different bands and have to share a van for a week. For all of them it has been stressful, glorious, fun, dangerous, depressing and rewarding. Most of them are homesick but they are all very thank ful for this great experience. The Pope of Montana Rap

Farch Written by: Joan Sears

“ I d o n ’t t h i n k s u c c e s s really rides on where you live as much as it used to” 28 | Bella Entertainment | Issue 7

I

t’s always nice to get to interview someone from my home state, Montana. Jesse Frohreich, Helena born and raised. Also known as Pope Farch. He may look like an ordinary person on the streets but hand him a microphone, and your mind will be blown at his amazing verbal skills. Farch has only been in the rap scene for a couple of years and already he has several albums, including my favorite Villian, as well as opening for California hip-hop collective Odd Future. At the moment, he is trying to get himself on the bill as opening up for Aaron Carter. We will definitely let you guys know if that happens. The newest of his albums is Villian, which was dropped to the public on 4th of July 2015. The album itself follows the general trend and pits the obstacles and issues Farch has overcome against, fast -paced party music. “Started from McDonalds now we are here” one of many quippy sayings from his songs. Farch got into rap at the age of 11 by memorizing the Donkey Rap son at the beginning of Donkey Kon on Nintendo 64. From there he started performing it at local talent shows and radio station events. Doing so he attracted a group of backup dancers, known as the “Donkey Dudez.” They played at many events around Helena like the TireRama Block party, O’Reily’s Auto Parts’ St. Patty Party, and the Les Schwab Tire Barbecue. “Though the work was fun and the money was fast, my grades were slipping faster. My parents asked that I pull out of the rap world until I turned 18 and then I could decide whether I wanted to pursue it still. Which I did.” Farch explains to us. Back in the day, you had to be in New York or Los Angeles to have your stuff seen. It was standard to think that only country came out of Montana. It surprised me when I was introduced to this amazing rap scene three years ago at the annual Troyfest on July 3rd in Troy Montana. Though this wasn’t where, I had been introduced to Farch’s music, but this was where I was able to finally see him live. I was first introduced to Farch’s music last year when I was interviewing Brian O’Neil (Traff the Wiz)

when he ranted and raged about his new found buddy in the rap scene. I heard some of his singles and really enjoyed them, so when his album dropped I snatched it up. Last years Troyfest was the first I heard Farch live, and his performance was incredible. His confidence showed bright on the stage. It made me proud to be from Montana and have such a great music scene that doesn’t just involve country singers… Now you don’t need to move to those key places to make it anywhere because now we have Facebook and youtube. “ I don’t think success really rides on where you live as much as it used to” Farch tells us in our interview “ People blow up every day on the internet” he adds. If you have a fantastic fan base, they will do the work of getting your work out there. Right now Farch is collaborating on a project called Dromo. It consists of just a one-man musical play that tells the story of an alien child that gets shunned to earth. He says that it is still going to be a rap show, just like all of his concerts, but with a strong cinematic element that;s brought to life using projectors and live instrumentation and set changes. “ I really want to do a soap opera album, with different characters and dialogue and nonlinear storytelling,” Farch explains. Not often do I hear such creativity, many musicians I talk to just want to play to get paid, and I feel at that point there is no love for enjoyment. So hearing passion come out in someone during an interview excites me. “ I wanna make a product where you sit down and listen to it with a clear mind and pay attention to it, and it just takes you on a ride emotionally,” Farch explains. That is what I feel is true music something that you can connect to emotionally and that it sticks with you. You don’t see that very often today in the pop or rap industries. To tell you the truth it makes me sick how simple minded modern rap is. So where can Farch be seen this year? He hopes to come perform in Spokane but not sure when. He will definitely be going to Troyfest 8 in Troy Montana because like he says “Traff the Wiz is the man!” You can also find his music on sound cloud, Spotify, Facebook, and Youtube. So go check him out you won’t regret it. Issue 7 | Bella Entertainment | 29

The

N ixon Rodeo

Bella Entertainment Review By: Taralynn Richardson

Issue 7 | Bella Entertainment | 31

O

n Saturday, May 7th, I was one of the first people in the empty venue at the Spokane Knitting Factory, waiting for doors to open and the show to begin. I watched from the downstairs bar as the fans who had waited at the District Bar were let in early and ran to the tables that they wanted so they could have a prime seat for the show. VIP members claimed their places and got their drinks and watched an empty stage while the floor slowly filled up from those who had been waiting in line outside. The fact that The Nixon Rodeo, a local Spokane band, can fill up a venue like the Knitting Factory and inspire so much dedication in their fans that people are waiting in line and making strategies to get the best seats, is amazing. What was further impressed upon me the night of their live DVD filming was that every Nixon Rodeo show feels like a family event. The people I watched racing in from the District Bar were groups of fans I had seen and met before at previous Nixon shows. There were kids that showed up early to see the first band play and then ended up staying the whole night to see the other bands, becoming a part of that family. Not only do the fans make The Nixon Rodeo’s shows feel like home, but so do the Rodeo guys, and the other bands they chose to bring on the bill that night. 37 Street Signs opened up the night with some fast paced songs that warmed the crowd up for the end of their set and the bands to come. They played most their debut EP that they released that night and 32 | Bella Entertainment | Issue 7

ended their set with a bit of unexpected tension. When frontman Brendan Lutmer came off of the stage to lean into the crowd as he screamed the last verse of the last song, I turned to look at the captivated faces of the audience around me and felt that we were all in that moment together. That was the moment that I felt 37 Street Signs tap into the family energy that The Nixon Rodeo and their fans bring to a show. During their last song, 37SS found their home at the Knitting Factory with us. In an unfortunate turn of events, Seattle band Windowpane had to drop off of the show due to a family emergency, however, another local Seattle band, Van Eps, was more than happy to jump on and come party with us in Spokane at the last minute. I think I speak for every person who was there when I say that we were glad Van Eps was there. After the emotional whirlwind of 37’s set, Van Eps picked right up and threw down. Their sound was a mix between indie rock, classic rock, and hard rock that had the entire crowd moving. Every song was clean and powerful. The pit opened up and didn’t stop during their entire set, even when they slowed things down a bit. The boys in Van Eps took to our stage in Spokane and made us feel like they belonged there and we accepted them. They played a killer cover of “Come Together” that brought together the best parts of classic and hard rock. The Nixon Rodeo chose a supporting band that fit right in with not only the rest of the lineup, but every single person in that room.

Breakdown Boulevard came on next to support from Boise, Idaho. This three piece alternative rock group played at The Nixon Rodeo’s CD release party last September and brought the Rodeo to the Boise Knitting Factory as well. Spokane has become a second home for these rockers and they always bring the friendship that they have developed with the Rodeo boys to the stage and show it to the people in the room in front of them. They bring a hard, funky sound that is made incredible by frontman Chad Townsend’s powerful vocals. Saturday night, the boys in Breakdown brought on their friends and fellow vocalists, both Ethan Harrison and Brent Forsyth from The Nixon Rodeo and Cameron Moore from Free The Jester, to help sing a cover of “Hero,” made famous by Enrique Iglesias. Breakdown Boulevard made an already special night into a celebration of friendship and family, showing us exactly what a Nixon Rodeo show is all about. Directly supporting the Rodeo was local party punk band Free The Jester. In the usual FTJ style, they threw a party right on stage, getting the crowd jumping and riled up for what was next. The pit that had started during Van Eps’ set and continued through Breakdown Boulevard’s performance kept on raging. Every song was fast paced, the crowd knew the words and sang right along. Free The Jester have become a familiar face to Nixon Rodeo fans as the guys play shows together often, but at the DVD filming show, they were able to bring a crazy, punk rock vibe to

to balance the Rodeo’s smooth, genre defying sound. It was the perfect juxtaposition against the treat we experienced next. The Nixon Rodeo went all-out for their DVD filming show. There were huge lights stacked on stage, a new, giant banner of the latest album artwork, fog machines, a stage in the back bar and an inflatable raft. Yes, a raft. The Rodeo wanted this show to be something special and not only did they achieve that with the bands they chose to share the stage with, but in the utter dedication to their production and performance that they brought that night. The Rodeo played an extra long set peppered with old songs and lots of great, new songs from their newly released album,

Relentless. The light show was perfectly timed with the music, the guys brought every ounce of energy they had and showed the crowd what a Rodeo is like at the Knitting Factory. When Ethan came out from behind the drums to scream a song to the crowd, he climbed into a raft and trusted his family to hold him up while he sang for them. When he attempted to climb down into the crowd, people tried to hold him up, a testament to the love and support these people have for the guys who play music for them. It was incredible to watch the bond between The Nixon Rodeo and their fans that night. When they played “Now or Never,” their fan dedicated song, the Rodeo boys took a page out of Breakdown

Boulevard’s book and brought on Jake Jovanovich of Van Eps and Dane Mullen of Breakdown Boulevard to echo Ethan’s drum beats, creating an epic surround sound to compliment Brent’s voice. The Nixon Rodeo bring an intimacy to their shows that few bands do. They only bring in the best of other local Spokane bands and out of town bands that fit right into the little/big family the Rodeo have created with their fans. The loyalty of the Rodeo’s fans and the family atmosphere of a Rodeo show was more evident than it has ever been at their live filming. It was truly a special experience and the DVD should be something highly anticipated among the Rodeo family. Photo by: Rebbeca Mullins

Toy Garden, Solo project that should get the praise he deserves, in this article you will find out why he loves music so much. 38 | Bella Entertainment | Issue 7

The Toy Garden The Toy Garden’s new album, “Collide” evokes a feeling of sorrowful beauty and creates an atmosphere of languishing weightlessness. The post rock mastermind behind the solo project is William Alan Haworth. His passion bleeds through this 10 track album, that spans over an hour and fifteen minutes.

William is always writing new songs, which excites us here at Bella, because we love listening to his music! We asked if he was compiling a new album, and he replied, saying that many of his songs were in the recording phase, and doesn’t know at the moment which ones would go well together in an album. He is considering doing a William Alan album, which will contain more singing. He says his vision is that it will be closer to a singer/songwriter album than anything he has done previously. He is also thinking of collaborating with other artists like he did with his new album ‘Collide’. Either way, we are sure to love it!

Destined to become a musician, both of his parents played in bands, and his mother even performed live while she was pregnant with him. “So I guess I’ve been in music since before I was born”, he said jokingly. He started learning music at a young age on his Father’s drum set. With music in his blood and a strong desire to learn how to write music, he took up the guitar. After asking what band he most identifies his style with, this was the response he gave us. Chris Lafferty and his band toured alongside Saving Abel, our cover band in issue 6, this past year on the East Coast. Along the way they made plenty of fans because of their lead singer’s not so common trait. Chris Lafferty not only sings for 89 Reasons but he is also a NASCAR driver in North Carolina. Well let me first say that I write all of our music. So when I sing about going 180, it’s literal and not figurative. How long has 89 reasons been a band? The band has actually been around for about 4 years. The very first song that we recorded became the theme song for a TV show that I hosted, which aired on FOX Sports. Then we would play at NASCAR events. I wanted real credibility and not just “ the NASCAR dude on stage at a race track”.

Where do you see 89 Reasons in 5 years?

I want to be a band who is sought out to tour with. I want to have a steady tour schedule, but I don’t ever want to see us on the road 24/7. I’d love to build a tour that follows my racing schedule from city to city. Issue 7 | Bella Entertainment | 41

One Mans Dream

T

he hype is still here in Spokane at the newly opened Comedy Club located on downtown on Sprague. We feel this new Comedy Club will be ideal for the Spokane community. The Knitting Factory and The INB have brought in some incredible acts in the past, but it wasn’t the same feeling that you get in a club dedicated to comedy. That is just what Spokane Comedy Club gives to us, but most of all they are giving the Spokane community more nightlife options as well as giving local comedians a chance to perform whether it be at an open mic night’s every Wednesday or being an MC for the national acts that come in every weekend. Not only do they have open mic nights they also have stand-up-nights every week which will help local Stand-Up’s but also encourage people to try Standup. Adam runs The Spokane Comedy Club as well as the Tacoma Comedy Club with his parents. Adam Northwest took the top prize on the former show Next Big Comic on CMT. He began performing professional improv comedy at the age of 13 and a few years later stepped into the stand-up spotlight. He can be seen on cable TV’s Man-Up, Stand-Up as well as Comedy Brew. He has opened up for top comedians like Bob Saget, Jeff Ross, and Joe Rogan to name a few. Since the CMT’s show was canceled right after Adam’s win, he is still considered reigning champion. Adam 29 opened the doors of the Spokane Comedy Club on March 17th with A-List comedian Sara Colonna. The plans to open a comedy club were in the making for a long while, but looking for property for the club didn’t start until 2 years ago. The family is originally from Spokane, Adam’s father is retired from Fairchild AFB and his mother attended and graduated from Eastern Washington University (EWU). So coming to Spokane to open up a comedy club here has made the

family beyond happy. The Tacoma Comedy Club opened up in 2010. The club started from just booking shows in a side room of a bar and expanded from there. Adam and his family felt that there was a great need for something like a Comedy club in the Tacoma area. So they fulfilled that need by opening one up. “Opening the business with my parents has been a dream,” Adam says of his families Tacoma Club. It makes him happy that he gets to spend time with his parents doing something that he loves. Adam and his family have no plans yet to open any other clubs in Eastern Washington. As they are focusing on making this club successful by bringing in more great acts. What you can expect to see is every Wednesday is open mic free for anyone to either watch or perform. May 13th Pauly Shore preformed 2 nights in a row. Just to name a few more well-known comedians to grace us with their presence is Raulphie May, Craig Robinson, and Nick Swardson. For a full list of events at the Spokane Comedy Club, you can visit their website at spokanecomedyclub.com We are beyond excited to see what else they have in store for Spokane as well as Tacoma. Here at Bella Entertainment, we all would like to give big thanks to Adam and his family for bringing this excellent Comedy Club to Spokane. If you would also like to find some of Adam Northwest’s stand-up Comedy, you can find him on YouTube, as well as his Pandora channel. We have all thoroughly enjoyed his stand-up comedy here at Bella Entertainment. Once you listen to it, you will immediately understand why he won CMT’s Next Big Comic. You can also see why he has opened up two great clubs in two different cities. So make sure you get the full experience and watch or listen to his comedy and then go down to the Spokane Comedy Club to catch a show on 315 W Sprague. Issue 7 | Bella Entertainment | 43

Van EPS

From East to West Ta k i n g Wa s h i n g t o n b y s t o r m !

Written By: Jaclyn Hyde The night was young, and people were waiting to get into the venue already to see The Nixon Rodeo’s Filming of their concert. Word came in that Windowpane wouldn’t be able to make it, and that Van EPS would be replacing them. If that wasn’t fate, then I don’t know what is. How to perfect it is to have been able to see these guys again before releasing the magazine. The last time I saw them was at The St. Paddy’s Day Tent Party at the Viking Bar and Grill. They did an incredible job; I was very impressed with their style of how they played music. After hearing and seeing their live performance, it had me wanting more. I looked up their recorded songs, again was not disappointed. So when I got the news that they were going to be at the May 7th Concert at the Knitting Factory, I was ec44 | Bella Entertainment | Issue 7

static. The killed it, and their Beatle’s cover of Come Together was on point. The crowd was even moshing to the song which made the experience even better. These guys know how to work a crowd; their line-up didn’t disappoint at all. Such an honor to see these guys again, but also, a higher honor to be able to interview them as well. Van EPS members all knew each other from back in high school and decided early on to start up a rock band in the city of Seattle. They all got together in the beginning learning cover songs, eventually developed into writing their own songs. After a while that turned into them recording EP’s and Albums. They have thrived very well in the Seattle area. Seattle’s music is very diverse and different from what we are used to

Van EPS having here in Spokane. You are going to find that everywhere though one music scene being distinct from another. That’s why we love bringing in bands like Van EPS. Van EPS has told us they love the Spokane music scene just as much as they love the Seattle music scene, and they love their buddies from The Nixon Rodeo. Van EPS feels that music should be something you love and breath. If you don’t do any of those things, then you shouldn’t be playing music. We completely agree if there weren’t love for music in the Bella Entertainment staff, we wouldn’t be here. It’s not about the money or fame for these guys it’s about the love of music and the fantastic support that they receive from their fans. So you are probably wondering what do they have planned for this year. Well, we got the full scoop on their upcoming EP that will be releasing soon and some touring this summer in August. They hope that the west coast will start getting acclimated to them so the west coast will want them to come back. They said that they already have won the hearts of Seattle, but they would like the rest of us to join in.

They hope to have something planned again for Spokane this summer as well. We hope that they do make another stop back in Spokane because their sound is classic with a modern edge that we all here at Bella love to rock out to. Some of the bands that they remind me of is a bit of Foo Fighters, ACDC, Led Zeppelin, and Jet, just to name a few. If you never got the chance to see them at the Viking or at the Knitting Factory. You got to make sure that the next time they come in town that you go out and show them some support. You can also check out their music videos and albums to get a start. These guys are here for the long haul as they have already been going for 5 years now and plan to go another 5 years producing more albums, EP’s and hopefully having themselves established enough on the west coast to do a whole tour. These guys actually deserve it. Raw talent is rare to find these days as everyone is going to digital and auto tune. These guys are as fresh as it gets. So again make sure you show your support by subscribing to their YouTube channel and also their Facebook page.

hen I first met Jessica I had no idea she could sing, it took years for me to find out. I always loved her make-up and hair tutorials and followed them religiously. Until one day she posted her first music video on her Facebook profile. Naturally I had to watch it because I am all about anything music wise. I fell in love. It was really well done and creative, just my style. Jessica and her Boyfriend Christopher Sean Grey had created it together. Jayroot was in music all throughout school and has been singing ever since. Her middle school Choir teacher was a huge inspiration to her. They still talk today about music and support each other. Jayroots biggest motivator is when a track comes together perfectly. Which makes her want to work even harder on her next track. Amy Winehouse is who Root most identifies with in her music. “We have similar

styles as far as music goes, we both like the old school vibes, and I just love her,” Root says. Lana Del Ray comes in a close second, Root adds. Power couples can seem like intimidating forces, managing to have their own wildly successful careers as well as relationships. Which is what Jessica and Christopher are. “He is basically my manager and we help each other in any way we can” Root comments. Which means they also support each other when it comes to their careers and dreams. Root has pretty much played at all of the venues in Spokane. She said the coolest one so far has been the Hard Rock Café in Seattle. Jessica sees herself in a big city like New York traveling around performing all over and loving it. “Jayroot is for life,” She tells us. She started all of this at a young age, and she plans to take it all the way to the top. Issue 7 | Bella Entertainment | 47

t’s not every day that we get a band from Minneapolis Minnesota. We feel truly honored to be interviewing The Sleep Signals, the 5-piece rock/ post-hardcore band. Sleep signals have covered a tremendous amount of ground in a relatively short amount of time. They have built a reputation of having an extremely high energy performance at live shows which can be heard in their recorded music and seen in their music videos. They have landed shows with national/ regional bands like Saving Abel, 3 PM Morning, Annalisa and Another Lost Year. Sleep Signals got their start in 2013, with founding members Robert Cosgrove and Miles Norwood. The two began writing music together. Later on, the band added on Paul Kreuger, Colin Smith, and Eric Moen. They went through several different evolutions of where they wanted to take the band before deciding what they wanted to run with and make it official. Each band member has come from previous touring bands so it was an obvious decision for them to get back out on the road. Sleep signals became the primary focus collectively though it took them a year they began touring in late 2014 and haven’t looked back. The name doesn’t have a super exciting story. They com-

piled a list of names over a few months. Sleep Signals had stood out because they all are pretty interested in Sleep phenomenon, Lucid Dreaming and Sleep paralysis, “The name really jumped out as something we could build a theme around what clarifies the band.” They also tell us that it has been really fun working the concepts into their music. Though Sleep Signals has some management that they work with, they pride themselves on being a DIY band. They don’t have a label that supports or books their gigs, everything they do they do themselves. They love working that way, it gives them the opportunity to collaborate with other awesome DIY bands. The band plans to keep touring as much as they can, booking wherever they can. They just released a new album called Transitions on February 26th of 2016. The album I found was very well written and awe-inspiring. With its post rock and metal feel to it, it also has more of a theatrical sound to it compared to their last album called “Open your Eyes” Like all the musicians that we interview we always have their albums in our playlists at work, in the car and at home. I especially love Sleep Signals because I am a Metal fan at heart. Future plans for Sleep Signals

consists of coming out with a new album which songs are being worked on right now. They are also finishing up their tour on the East Coast and hope to soon start planning for a west coast tour which would ultimately mean they will be making a stop in Spokane. Some of you may have already been exposed to them at The Pin, last August. For many bands, it can be very mind blowing with how familiar they become and also how many immediate fans they get from their excellent music that they have. So it came as a surprise that Sleep Signals almost knew that they were going to be loved. “I think we all had aspirations of making it to where we are now and we knew that we were capable of doing that with a lot of hard work and dedication, but we are still nowhere near where we envisioned taking their band. We still have a lot of room to grow, and we have no plans of slowing down anytime soon” Robert Cosgrove explained to us. That to me screams confidence, they should be an inspiration to many. Transitions album can be found on ITunes as well as on their website. Make sure to go check it out as well as liking their Facebook page and checking out their YouTube channel for their amazing music videos. Issue 7 | Bella Entertainment | 49
