Mr. Maroo Loyal Forever

Austin High School Mascot Cheers on More Than Football Team Photos and Story by Casey Vaughn

S

tephen F. Austin High School (AHS) sits aside beautiful Town Lake in Austin,

Texas. As students wander the halls between classes, practice for the upcoming football game outside, or walk over to Magnolia Cafe for an

afterschool snack, something

is always present in the air. It is more than school spirit--

a sense of pride and

fervor for Austin High. Loyal Forever.

Whether someone is in band or in math club, at the end of the day it is the responsibility of the Maroon’s mascot to keep this spirit alive. On the outside Mr. Maroo is a rambunctious, lively maroon ball of energy. But who is Mr. Maroo on the inside? Sophomore Hannah Bergman performs as Mr. Maroo while carrying out her other obligations on and off the field. Most students sit in the stands and cheer on the varsity football team, but Hannah cheers with the cheerleaders. Her responsibilities as Mr. Maroo include attending cheerleading practice, home volleyball games and all varsity football games. She is often asked to attend special events where Mr. Maroo’s unforgettable presence is desired. Fans love watching Hannah put on the costume and taking pictures with her as Mr. Maroo because he is the embodiment of Austin High’s undying pride. “Mr. Maroo is a symbol of our pride. No one seems to appreciate the funny Top: Hannah sets up her Mr. Maroo costume before kickoff. Above: Hannah plans her performance on the sidelines with the cheerleaders.
