HE DAY THIS MAGAZINE WAS left at your home something very special happened. A wonderful local person walked up to your door, copy in hand and dropped it on your doorstep. Seems like a routine job, but for the person bringing you Extraordinary Living, it’s a bright chance for financial independence and Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty is grateful to be a part of it. For years, Abilitree has been pairing reliable, dedicated employees with disabilities with businesses looking to expand or invest in a partnership that offered a little something more to the community.

So when we decided to expand our magazine distribution to include neighborhood delivery, we were pleased to follow in the footsteps of businesses such as Deschutes Brewery, KIALOA Paddles and Bend Broadband to hire a great team of Abilitree employees to get the work done. “We believe it’s a great place for us to spend our money,” said Rebecca Green, Director of Marketing with Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty. “But more than that, the pride Abilitree participants take in their work really resonates.” To Mike G., an Abilitree employee, Green is right on when she mentions the satisfaction he gets from his work.

Lorraine began her real estate career in 1997 working in the administrative department for a local real estate firm. She brought a wealth of accounting standards and implementation abilities to the table and quickly grew into managing a team of five. Licensed as a broker in 2006, Lorraine became the assistant to the managing principal broker. In 2008, she received her principal brokers license. Lorraine joined Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty team of professionals in 2011 where she manages all financial transactions, accounts payables, accounts receivables, IT implementation and back office document storage systems. Angela Renzi was born and raised in NE Washington. From 1997 until 2005 she worked for the Florida Department of Corrections as a word processor and receptionist. Upon her return to Washington State she worked for a non-profit organization as a graphic designer and webmaster. In late 2011 she moved to the Central Oregon area and obtained a position with Coca Cola. In March 2012, Angela was hired as an Administrative Assistant for Cascade Sotheby’s. In the fall of 2012 she was promoted to the position of Transactions Coordinator. One of her hobbies is singing with the Central Oregon Showcase Chorus, she also serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors.

Steamed Turbot with Tomato and Citrus Sage Sauce Turbot is a delicate white fish with a creamy and buttery texture and works well as a substitute for Halibut in recipes. Serve with your favorite whole grain and fresh seasonal vegetables.

INGREDIENTS 12 ounces wild caught Turbo (cut into 2, 6 ounce pieces, 1 inch thick) sea salt and freshly ground pepper (optional) SAUCE: 1-2 tsp. organic cold-pressed olive oil 1/3 cup organic shallot, minced 1.5 cups organic grape or cherry tomatoes, chopped into halves or quarters 2-3 Tbl. water 1 Tbl. organic sage, thinly sliced 1 Tbl. fresh organic meyor (when in season) lemon juice zest from one organic meyor lemon Âź tsp. unrefined sea salt, plus one pinch YIELD: 2 servings

DIRECTIONS STEP 1 Add one inch of water to a saucepan with lid and metal steamer basket placed inside. Rinse fish, pat dry with paper towel; season with salt and pepper, place on 2 pieces of parchment paper. Set aside. STEP 2 Heat olive oil in a medium skillet over medium flame. When oil moves quickly in the skillet, you can check this by tipping the pan, add minced shallot. Add pinch of sea salt, turn the heat down to medium-low. Cook, gently stirring, until shallot turns translucent and begins sticking to the bottom of the pan, about 3 minutes. Add tomatoes, water, sea salt and lemon juice. Raise flame to medium-high; cook 2-3 minutes, gently stirring. The mixture will come to a simmer. Add sage and lemon zest, gently toss together and turn off heat. Transfer to serving plate. STEP 3 Bring saucepan with steamer basket to a boil on high-flame. Place both pieces of fish, with parchment paper in steamer basket, with lid; steam approx. 4 minutes. Transfer to serving plate. Garnish with parsley or sage and enjoy.

Top Three Priorities for Bend’s Future

STUDENTS, STARTUPS AND SUSTAINABILITY

C

ompass Commercial Real Estate Services partner Darren Powderly recently made the rounds as a featured speaker at several high profile business events in Bend. At the Bend Chamber’s recent town hall panel discussion held at Volcanic Theater Pub, Powderly shared the stage with Robert Kieffer (Facebook), Todd Taylor (President, Taylor NW) and Jim Coonan (EDCO Bend Venture Catalyst Manager) to talk about their vision for Bend’s future success and what they identify as key priorities to drive the region’s economic growth. Powderly’s key priorities to drive Bend’s economic growth are what he coined, “The Three S’s — Students, Startups and Sustainability.” Below he provides a summary of his vision: Investing in students is a number one priority given the critical importance that high-quality education serves in any community. As a father of two primary school aged children, I understand the importance of providing my kids with the best possible education available. The Bend - La Pine School District offers an outstanding level of education, yet there is more work to be done to ensure that our kids can compete with other kids around the globe. Thankfully, the local community supports our public schools and invests heavily in new facilities, teachers, programs, technology and overall care. Quality of K-12 public schools and higher education are top priorities for business leaders when evaluating cities for their companies. The OSU-Cascades campus is the optimal short-term opportunity we have as a community to improve our quality of life and economic diversity. Universities attract smart people who start or attract companies that produce jobs. My partners and I at Compass Commercial served as the real estate consultants for OSU-Cascades and helped them evaluate the various four-year university campus locations in Bend. We also donated $25,000 to the cause. We did so because we believe it’s critical for Bend to have a strong higher education presence in order to compete for the high-paying jobs that every other city in America is aggressively competing for. Thanks in part to the success of COCC in Bend, OSU-Cascades was able to grow their student body to 938 students for the Fall Semester in 2013. By 2025, OSU-Cascades will have 5,000 students enrolled. That’s smart growth!

A second priority is startups. According to the Kauffman Foundation, net job growth in the U.S. economy occurs through startup firms. I’m talking not only about technology startups, but also about startups in all industries. Thanks to the excellent work of many hard working entrepreneurs and supportive community leaders, there’s a burgeoning startup community in Bend where entrepreneurs can access funding, mentorship, education and other infrastructure. As a community, we need to invest in startups because entrepreneurs make job creation happen. The third priority is sustainability. Most of us moved to Bend by choice because we wanted a higher quality of life than what was available elsewhere. An important element of quality of life is a steady supply of high paying jobs in a broad range of industries. However, we don’t want growth for the sake of growth, nor to turn Bend into another poorly planned, overcrowded and financially strapped city. We need a master plan that balances smart growth with quality of life. The Bend 2030 organization is doing great work to craft a vision for Bend that reflects our core community values. S THE RECESSION FADES IN the rear view mirror, Bend has again emerged as one of the brightest locations in the country for economic growth. With a fast growing and educated population, a low business tax rate, and unparalleled outdoor recreation opportunities it’s easy to see why hundreds more companies are relocating or launching in Central Oregon every year. It’s true, the 2007 housing crash hit Bend hard, but in the years since we’ve rebounded stronger than ever.

A DIVERSIFIED ECONOMY. Before the housing market crash in 2007, construction was king in Bend. About one in five businesses were construction-related back then. When the bottom fell out more than 500 construction-related firms either went broke or left town. The industries failure was a staggering blow. Here’s the good news: The overall number of firms in Bend hasn’t changed since then. For just about every construction company that went away, another and different sort of firm has sprung up in its place. Now we’re seeing only one in 10 businesses related to construction and instead hundreds more technology, manufacturing, education and health services firms. This means a strong foundation for employment and a stable, resilient economy ensuring we never again see another 2007. PUBLIC INVESTMENT IS OUR TOP PRIORITY. The people who live here believe in Bend’s future and are willing to put their money on the line. Since 2007—and in the middle of a recession—we’ve passed a $42 million community college capital improvement bond, a $96 million schools bond and a $29 million parks and recreation bond. What’s more, the City of Bend has planned $250 million in capital improvements for the next two years, including major sewer system upgrades prioritized on the immediate needs of the business community. The bottom line: we’re invested in sustainable growth around here.
