The holidays

are a time to rejoice but also to relect. In the case of Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty, we are celebrating another outstanding year of growth for our company and for our partners, whom it’s been a pleasure to work with over the last twelve months. We are also relecting on the unique opportunity to work with our amazing clients in such inspiring places. Whether it’s a vacation property on the coast, a historic home in Lake Oswego or a custom masterpiece in Crooked River country, our passion is connecting buyers with the properties and places that inspire them, and sellers with the people who share a vision for these unique investments. In the process, we are building stronger communities around Oregon and southwest Washington, places that we are all lucky to call home. It’s also been a year of phenomenal growth for our company and our brand. Over the past year, Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty has tripled the number of our ofices. You will now see our signature blue signs from southwest Washington, down the coast of Oregon, across the Willamette Valley and throughout Central Oregon. Two new locations are particularly worth noting. In Bend, we will be opening a new ofice in the heart of the bustling Mill Quarter between the Shops at the Old Mill and historic downtown Bend. It’s an area buzzing with new shops and restaurants, a new hotel and commercial space. Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty is right at home amid all this activity. Stop by our ofice at the new Crane Shed Commons building in 2017. In Vancouver, we are happy to announce that Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty will be moving ofices to the landmark waterfront project in Vancouver, a massive redevelopment on the banks of the Columbia that will serve as the gateway to Vancouver. (For more, see “Vancouver Waterfront” p. 44.) One thing that won’t change is our support for the arts and artists in the communities where we live. Expect us to continue opening our doors to host gallery events and showings that bring together buyers, sellers and brokers. Finally, we say a heartbreaking goodbye to Tim Cook who passed away suddenly on October 22nd. Tim was our Managing Principal Broker for Lake Oswego, The Pearl and our Coast ofices. His legacy of leadership, optimism and commitment to service lives on through us. We miss him dearly. Deb Tebbs CEO/Owner/Broker

The Northwest’s Finest Appliance Showroom

From the Oregon Coast to the High Desert, visitors and residents can experience the best of what’s happening in Oregon this Winter.

OSU Bend Welcomes Students

Tillamook Visitor Center

Pronghorn Breaks Ground

It was some three decades in the making, but students in Bend set foot on the newly minted Oregon State University-Cascades campus this past September, making them the inaugural class at Oregon’s newest four-year university. The new ten-acre campus opened in early fall to a rush of students who have been waiting for the west-side campus since 2015 when construction plans were finalized. Construction crews worked feverishly through the summer to complete work on one of the college’s first classroom buildings, Tykeson Hall. The christening of the new campus marks the opening of Oregon's first new public University in roughly half a century. It also represents a major investment in higher education outside of the I-5 corridor.

No trip to the Coast is complete without the requisite stop at the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Thanks to a major investment in the factory’s visitor center, that experience will be more memorable for the estimated 1.3 million annual visitors. The Tillamook County Creamery Association owns the factory and announced in October a major renovation and expansion. The work is set to begin in March when the Creamery Association breaks ground on the new 38,500-square-foot facility. New features include added parking and a larger area for ice cream and cheese sampling. Other improvements include new meeting space, an enlarged gift shop, more exhibits and enhanced viewing of the factory floor. Early sketches by architect Olson Kundig show a sleek, modern facility with an abundance of glass and steel. TILLAMOOK.COM

More than a decade after first opening its doors to homeowners, Pronghorn has broken ground on a 104-room luxury hotel set to open in fall 2017 as the centerpiece of the resort. “The new Huntington Lodge embraces Central Oregon in every way,” the resort announced. The hotel will continue the Northwest lodge theme that has defined the resort that is located roughly fifteen miles northeast of Bend. The hotel’s centralized location puts it within walking distance of other resort amenities, including the spa and outdoor pools, as well as the signature golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio. General Manager Spencer Schaub said he expects the new hotel and associated foot traffic will add to the resort’s overall vitality while allowing more visitors to experience the resort’s world-class amenities. Natural Beauty A custom home in Terrebonne showcases its stunning setting. IN THE SUMMER OF 2011, David and Cheryl Keyston were living

in Carmel when they took a road trip through the Pacific Northwest and visited friends at Crooked River Ranch. The next morning, they hopped in the car, headed for Route 97 and their next stop: Idaho. “We were just passing through,” said Cheryl. However, five minutes down the road, they caught sight of an intriguing landscape out the window, so David suggested they stop and take a closer look. “We pulled up to the cliff and got out of the car, and just saw this extraordinary vista to the left and to the right,” Cheryl recalled. “David said, ‘It’s like we’re on the Grand Canyon.’” After appreciating the sight for a few moments, they got back behind the wheel, only to pass a “For Sale” sign seconds later. They soon learned: 6.8 untouched acres overlooking Crooked River Gorge were available for purchase. The incredible view that they had just been appreciating could be theirs every day. “I felt very inspired,” said Cheryl. “You couldn’t take it all in—seeing the eagles flying by and hearing the water—and not think, what would it be like to live here?” 

W I N T ER 2017

Within a month, the couple purchased the land. Then they tapped their creative backgrounds—Cheryl was a fashion designer and David an architecture enthusiast—to design a home that would suit the beautiful setting. First, this meant positioning the house so that it would maximize the incredible views. “When we sited the property, we wanted to make sure that we could take advantage of the best perspective of the river as well as Smith Rock and Monkey Face,” said Cheryl. “We got it as close to the rim as we could, legally.” Next, they took the natural setting as inspiration for the building’s overall form. “We just decided to follow nature’s path,” said Cheryl. From the birds’ flight patterns overhead to the cliffs on the horizon, the couple noticed, “Everything is horizontal here,” said David. Therefore, they decided to keep the home a single-level, and then strove to repeat that horizontality in subtle ways in the interior. For instance, all the Pella windows sport horizontal mullions, and each electrical outlet cover plate was positioned parallel to the baseboards. 12

Past the custom mahogany front door, every room is punctuated with artistic detail without sacrificing the necessary function. For instance, the colors and veining of the countertops in the kitchen mimic the landscape just outside the windows, while the durable quartzite makes meal prep hassle-free. In the living room, a handcrafted metal screen fabricated by local artist Andrew Wachs borders the fireplace and artfully hides the stereo and television. Four opaque glass doors from Italy are etched with natural scenes, letting light flow throughout the home while also ensuring privacy. A textural plaster coating on all the walls forms thoughtful niches for displaying art and collectibles in every room. In the principle bathroom, the tile floor received inset area “rugs” composed of river rock, an artful feature that also feels good underfoot. The couple’s contractor, Scot Fetrow, built the house in just ten months while upholding his clients’ dedication to detail. “They made a lot of neat choices that came together really well,” said Fetrow. Under his guidance, even the baseboard received 

special treatment, as he made sure to round out the corners for seamless joins. “I also made sure to carry the grain around the corner,” he explained. Fetrow brought in several skilled craftspeople to best achieve the couple’s vision. This included Bend’s Cement Elegance, which fabricated several custom counters throughout the home. Outside, the couple specified an 850-square-foot patio and four Cumaru hardwood decks for ideal indoor-outdoor flow. “It’s a really relaxing place to entertain as well as enjoy the afternoon sun,” said David. Additionally, David strived to ensure the home would use fewer natural resources throughout its lifetime. “While this home is technically not LEED-certified, I followed almost every single protocol for that certification,” he said. Fetrow built the walls at “double thickness,” in order to up the insulation value. The home is also prepped to support a future solar panel array. A hybrid hot water heater and a highefficiency heat pump and furnace ensure energy saving. Ultimately, the Keystons created a home that melds with the landscape to form a truly inspiring retreat. “You just never get tired of it here,” said David. 

FamilyFriendly Elegance A Vancouver couple transforms their home into a sophisticated family refuge. WHEN LISA BUCHAN and her husband built their house in

Vancouver’s North Felida neighborhood in 1999, they might have been excused for thinking it was complete. That was before the couple’s three children became teenagers. “I have three boys and they were just getting too big,” said Buchan. “They needed their own rooms and living space.” So she got to work designing a 2,500-square-foot addition to her home. It would seamlessly blend family hangout spaces with the original structure, while also giving her the opportunity to upgrade the existing finishes and fixtures. The result is a generous 5,938-square-foot home—including a separate outbuilding—that marries traditional aesthetic details with top-notch family function.

| W I N T E R 2 0 1 7

From the start of the process, Buchan knew that she wanted to embrace a classic style, inside and out. Having recently travelled to Atlanta’s Buckhead district, she was drawn to the comfortable elegance of the architecture there. Inspired, she first overhauled the front façade of their stucco home with limestone. “We were after a more traditional, almost colonial look,” said Buchan. Structured plantings on either side of the door make for a balanced composition upon entering. Buchan worked with a local architect to install a Juliette balcony inside the doubleheight foyer overlooking the front door, “that makes the room feel larger,” said Buchan. 

Upstairs, a second family room provides the kids with the ultimate hangout zone. With three televisions, a pool table and a kitchenette, all needs are covered.

Buchan installed a smaller “working pantry”—complete with refrigerator, stove, and sink—which is ready for dinner overflow duty and provides extra storage. A discreet sliding door conceals its presence when not in use.

Although she made no changes to the size of the living and dining rooms on either side of the entry, the entire level received Brazilian walnut flooring in order to unify the existing space with the new addition at the rear of the home. The addition includes an enlarged kitchen, family rooms upstairs and downstairs and a guest room for visiting friends and family. Upgrades were also given to all of the interiors. “The only room that didn’t get touched was the master bedroom,” said Buchan. She also made sure to add a “considerable amount” of windows, to guarantee plenty of natural light throughout. In the revamped kitchen, knotty alder cabinets, granite slab countertops, and buttery-colored handmade tile on the backsplash combine to create a warm and welcoming cooking spot. Top-of-the-line appliances, including a Viking range and refrigerator—ensure meals are whipped up in style. Steps away, Buchan installed a smaller “working pantry”—complete with refrigerator, stove, and sink—which is ready for dinner overflow duty and provides extra storage. A discreet sliding door conceals its presence when not in use. “You can cook in there and then close the door and be done with it,” said Buchan. Down the hall, a hardworking utility room provides ample laundry space as well as built-in shoe storage. For the nearby family room, Buchan had the ceilings coffered and made a stone fireplace the room’s focal point, creating a comfortable spot for family gatherings. Upstairs, a second family room provides the kids with the ultimate hangout zone. Three televisions, a pool table and a kitchenette have all of their needs covered. family activities. Above the detached garage, Buchan put in a kitchenette and powder room so her husband would have a comfortable office just steps away from the main home. Wherever possible, Buchan worked with local artisans in order to incorporate old-world craftsmanship and add to the home’s overall character. In the front hall, a carved Brazilian walnut railing complements the classic wood paneling. The kitchen hood vent is wrapped in hammered copper, as are two exterior chimney caps, an outdoor fireplace cap and the downspouts. To better echo the exterior finish and signal consistency, Buchan hired a mason who faced the family room fireplace in limestone. All of the walls were hand-troweled to create a Venetian plaster effect. Throughout the process, Buchan also collaborated with interior designer Heidi Townsend, owner of the Vancouver-based Creative Interiors and Design. Townsend helped her to get all the traditional details just right, such as the gorgeous chandelier hanging in the principal bedroom. The result is the ultimate cozy effect throughout the interior that’s perfect for the family of five. “It’s just a really homey, comfortable house,” said Buchan. “No one walks in and feels like they can’t touch anything. It’s made for sitting back and relaxing together.” 

Kitchen Trends Whether you’re looking to reinvent or simply reorganize your kitchen in 2017, we’ve got ideas and inspiration. We surveyed several home professionals in Central Oregon who weighed in on kitchen design trends to watch next year. We talked to frontline designers, builders, and appliance experts who told us what to expect and how you can stay ahead of the curve.

Appliances continue to get “smarter” every year. “These are appliances that have built-in wi-fi connectivity,” said Dave Johnson, General Manager of Johnson Brothers Appliances in Bend. Demand for these has increased as consumers become more aware of what the new technology can do. Whether it’s a fridge that can tell you that you’re low on milk or a stove that will preheat before you arrive home, these additions to the kitchen are all about convenience.

to and within view of the living and dining rooms. According to Patti Julber, interior designer and owner of Complements Home Interiors in Bend, this means that “everything is being integrated” and the kitchen needs to blend effortlessly with its surroundings. For contractor Bart Mitchell, owner of Stillwater Construction, this might mean installing cabinetry with flush panels that recede from view. Major appliances, such as the refrigerator and dishwasher, can also be concealed behind matching cabinet panels for a seamless look.

Kitchens that Disappear

Conversational Islands

Today’s homeowner prefers an open-concept layout—meaning a kitchen adjacent

Kitchen islands remain perennially popular, although their design has changed slightly.

Connected Appliances

Many homeowners are moving away from the cooking-show-style setup of the past. Now, instead of stools lined up across from the cook, people want seating that wraps corners for face-to-face conversations. “We’re getting sinks and ranges off the island,” said Mitchell. “The island is now used purely for prep and gathering, and functions like a big table.” Statement Stoves

The past several years have seen professional-style gas stoves gaining in popularity and that trend won’t stop anytime soon. “They’re modeled after what you would find in a commercial kitchen,” said Johnson. Features include industrial handles, burners 

with high BTU output, and heavy-duty grates. If you want to make a bold design statement, manufacturers such as Bluestar and Big Chill go beyond simple stainless finishes, offering stoves in a range of colors. For those kitchens that need an electric cooking component, Julber has been installing more induction cooktops. “Induction is huge right now,” she said. Greige, Not Beige

Years ago, beige and brown ruled as a kitchen color palette. Then white and gray took over. Now, said Julber, we can expect to see a slight return to the beiges and browns, with a twist. “I see more of a brown-gray than a blue-gray being requested,” she said. This grey-beige color, or “greige,” is an understated neutral that brings warmth to the typical grey scheme. Simple Backsplashes

“I’m seeing a lot more handcrafted tile,” said Julber. “People are back to using ceramics again, rather than porcelain.” Along these lines, she’s receiving more requests for a

| W I N T E R 2 0 1 7

“cleaner, less elaborate” look for backsplash design. This means that small-scale, mosaic glass tiles depicting complicated patterns are being replaced with large-scale field tile. “Now I’m seeing people step back and say, ‘I want it simple and calm,’” said Julber. Durable Counters (that look like a million bucks)

When asked about countertops, all of our experts agreed: quartz rules. “People want quartz countertops over granite,” said Julber. Quartz does not require special cleaning, doesn’t stain, and now comes in less-busy patterns that mimic the veining in stone. “I think what people like is that quartz looks beautiful like stone but it has that amazing durability,” said Mitchell. No Clutter

“Clutter on the counter is limited,” said Greg Garrick, who manages marketing and sales at Bend’s Norman Building and Design. To better achieve this effect, Garrick is seeing microwaves and coffee makers built into the wall alongside traditional wall

ovens. His firm also recently outfitted a butler’s pantry with all of the secondary appliances tucked out of sight. Thoughtful Lighting

If you’re hosting a dinner party with a dirty kitchen within sight of the dining room, “the last thing you want is the kitchen lit up like a Christmas tree,” said Garrick. This means designers and builders are incorporating stealth under-cabinet lighting, overheads on dimmers and chic pendants over the island. “Lighting needs to bring the drama without highlighting the mess,” said Garrick. Less Matching

Lastly, today’s kitchen aims for a collected—yet polished—look. Homeowners and designers are combining contrasting elements to pleasing effect, such as brushed gold hardware with a brushed stainless steel refrigerator, or a live-edge wooden countertop with a high-gloss cabinet. Julber said: “People are feeling very comfortable mixing styles and breaking out of the box.” 

Scenic Bikeway

Prineville Reservoir

City of Prineville

Head East Prineville emerges as a destination for entrepreneurs and retirees. JAMES GOOD was living in Ogden, Utah and working for a well-known outdoor equipment manufacturer when he and his wife started looking around the West for potential places to relocate. The couple was looking for a small-town atmosphere with a casual pace. An avid biker who was at the time considering opening his own bike shop, Good knew that his new home had to be near trails and other outdoor amenities. They looked in the usual hotspots— around Steamboat, Colorado and outside Missoula, Montana. In the end they settled on Prineville, where Good’s wife is now working as a family practice doctor and Good operates Good Bikes, an all-

purpose cycling shop and watering hole in downtown Prineville that celebrated its second anniversary in October. Journeys similar to the Goods’ experience are becoming increasingly common in Prineville, where the small community is emerging from decades of economic struggles brought on by declines in the timber and ranching industries, once the backbones of Prineville’s economy. Today the sawmills have been largely replaced by server farms, thanks to major investments by Facebook and Apple at their respective data centers. Those projects have brought jobs and significant investments in infrastructure, including long-term investments in roads, streets and sewers that are making Prineville a more 

A HOT MARKET In the past four years, the median home price in Prineville has more than doubled to nearly $166,000. While the rental market is nearly dry due to the influx of temporary workers employed in the ongoing construction of data centers, there is still value to be had in the real estate market. “You can get a lot more bang for your buck here,” said Rachel Rhoden, a Sotheby’s broker who grew up in Prineville and has been working in the local real estate industry for the past decade. She cites an example of a recent listing for a 46-acre proper ty with a 5,000-square-foot custom home. That type of property around Bend and Sisters might fetch $2 million to $3 million, but in Prineville it’s listed for $850,000.“The fact that you can’t get much in Bend now (because of limited inventory) helps, because you sure can get a lot here,” said Rhoden.

attractive place for entrepreneurs. While officials with St. Charles were working to woo Good’s wife into committing to the town’s new hospital, local officials convinced Good that Prineville was the right place to start and grow his dream business. In a sense, Prineville has always been a town defined by its entrepreneurs and adventurers. The town even takes its name from one of its earliest merchants, Francis “Barney” Prine. A pioneer who made his way west from Kansas, Prine settled on the site that would later become Prineville in the late 1860s, opening a blacksmith shop and later a saloon. Others followed and by the turn of the century, Prineville was the unofficial capital of Central Oregon. But it wasn’t until the early Twentieth Century—when timber barons began harvesting the nearby Ochoco Mountains—that Prineville took off. Today’s boom isn’t being fueled by timber or cattle. Rather, tourism and technology are the new buzzwords. Whether

| W I N T E R 2 0 1 7

its retirees seeking the region’s mild and sunshine-abundant climate or young lifestyle refugees, Prineville is putting itself on the map as a destination for an active, outdoor-minded population. “There’s a really interesting blend of personalities. We have a traditional rural Western culture and that has kind of melded with the injection of knowledge and technology,” said Casey Kaiser, executive director at the Prineville Chamber of Commerce. While change is certainly afoot, don’t call Prineville “progressive.” Those kind of words hang in the air like the dust on a July

afternoon around these parts. Still, Prineville is showing signs of maturation. In addition to Good’s bike shop, there is now a local brewery, a bed & breakfast and even— Gasp!—a Starbucks. More press also means more visitors to Prineville. That’s what Elizabeth Hendrix was counting on when she moved to Prineville a year ago from Alaska after dismissing Bend as too crowded. Last fall she opened the two-suite Crooked River Inn in Prineville and has since been welcoming guests to her cozy, historic bed & breakfast. “I was really just drawn to the community,” said Hendrix. “Prineville is really coming of age.” “It’s a small town feel. People are really, really friendly, and it’s easy to do business here. You can park in front of the DMV, and walk in the door to no lines,” she said. While the secret may be out on Prineville, that doesn’t mean that traffic snarls are soon to follow. For even when it comes to growth, Prineville is inclined to take it slow. 

Warner Canyon Ski Area

Ski Anthony Lakes

Escape the lift lines and explore some new terrain at Oregon’s regional ski resorts.

One of the gems of Eastern Oregon’s alpine scene is tucked into Lake County. Here locals gather to carve powder stashes and glades on the slopes of Warner Peak. A single lift serves more than a dozen runs that wind around the mountain, with terrain ranging from beginner to expert. The volunteer-operated mountain is great example of rural can-do spirit—right down to its energy-efficient lodge that is powered by solar and biomass energy.

Set in the Blue Mountains, Anthony Lakes is both a mecca for local skiers and boarders and a draw for Northwest powder hounds who are looking to explore new terrain. With twenty-one runs and more than 1,000 skiable acres, Anthony Lakes offers more than one might expect from such a small resort. At 7,000 feet in elevation and with more than 300 inches of annual snowfall, it’s virtually guaranteed that Anthony Lakes will have something to offer no matter when you visit during the season.

Willamette Pass

Just a short drive from Eugene and the I-5 corridor, Willamette Pass is close enough to make a day trip, yet far enough to feel like a real getaway. With 430 inches of average snowfall and more than 500 acres of skiable terrain, Willamette has plenty to offer even the most die-hard skier. Yet the resort maintains its focus on creating a familyfriendly atmosphere. A detachable six-pack lift keeps skiers and boarders moving up the mountain and 200-plus acres of groomed terrain means plenty of room to spread out.

Central Oregon’s “other” mountain lives up to its slogan, “Steep, Deep and Cheap.” It’s an ethos that has spawned a loyal following among those who prefer to escape the crowds and premium prices at Oregon’s more well-known resorts. While its Santiam Pass location can prove challenging during years of light snowfall, Hoodoo can rival what most bigger resorts offer at a fraction of the cost in times of abundance. Night skiing, a tubing park and full R.V. hookups add more reasons to explore Hoodoo.

Ski Bowl

Often overshadowed by nearby Mount Hood Meadows and Timberline, Ski Bowl doesn’t get quite the snow or nearly the recognition, but it does have something that those resorts lack—lights. That means some of the best night skiing in the Northwest for those who like their turns served with a dose of moonlight. There’s also plenty of terrain, with some 960 acres available to skiers and boarders spread across sixty-five runs.

Oregon Culture and History Escape the winter weather at these six museums in Portland and Central Oregon. High Desert Museum

The Museum at Warm Springs

Engaging for all ages, Bend’s High Desert Museum showcases the history, people and wildlife that shaped the landscape and culture of Central Oregon. With live exhibits of early homesteading days in the region and access to animals that are native to the region, it’s easy to spend a day walking the entire property. Raptors of the Desert Sky, a live and interactive exhibit, is a highlight of the museum experience.

Created by The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, the Museum at Warm Springs has preserved and promoted art, artifacts, fashion and more since 1993. The museum showcases work from American Indians in the region, from traditional craftsmanship to contemporary artists. Located on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, the museum is renowned for its educational exhibits and intimate displays of American Indian history.

Deschutes Historical Museum

This winter, visit the Deschutes Historical Museum in downtown Bend to see Winter Comes: Oregon’s Nordic Ski History. The exhibit features the people that put Central Oregon on the map for Nordic skiing, as well as gear from the early days of the sport. Beyond the exhibit, the Deschutes Historical Museum is packed with interesting artifacts, photographs and documents about the history of Central Oregon.

It’s easy to spend a day getting lost at The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). One of Portland’s favorite museums, OMSI offers much to explore. Interactive exhibits featuring the science of water, electricity, construction and health will keep families fascinated and satiate curious minds. There’s also a planetarium and a submarine on the property. Located on the east bank of the Willamette River across from downtown, OMSI's other highlight is

an IMAX theater that presents documentaries and feature films. Portland Art Museum P O RT L A N D

The Portland Art Museum was the first of its kind on the West Coast. Today, the museum has a vast collection of art, ranging from classic pieces to contemporary work. This winter, two upcoming exhibits have us excited: a collection of Rodin’s sculptures and a collection of African American art. The museum also screens independent films throughout the year, in partnership with the NW Film Center. Oregon Historical Society Museum P O RT L A N D

The Oregon Historical Society Museum has a large collection of documents, photographs and artifacts drawing from around the state. This winter, catch two exhibits before they’re gone: Comic City, USA, featuring the history of comic books in Oregon and the United States and Democracy’s Blueprints, a collection of America’s founding documents.

Because everyone needs an outlet!

MEGAN MYERS Take a stroll through downtown, making stops at galleries, shops and businesses, including Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty, for the monthly First Friday Art Walk in Bend. We invite the community to join us as we host local artists and their work. Enjoy live music, refreshments and works of art, from quilt collaborations to playful paintings layered in color. A NATIVE OREGONIAN who recently

settled in Bend after spending the first part of her career in Washington state, Megan Myers is a painter and illustrator. A love for the outdoors drew Myers to Bend and, not surprisingly, her work focuses on the interplay between humans their natural surroundings. Drawings burst with colors and themes seem to spring forth from the imaginations of the children that typically appear as the subjects of her pieces. “My artwork explores intimate landscapes inspired by our region’s mountains, forests, deserts and beaches. The animals and children in my work exude innocence and a sense of wonder as they journey through the outdoors 36

exploring themes of companionship, protection, wilderness and the greatest adventure of all—love,” said Myers. The emphasis on the outdoors and its ability to inspire is deliberate. After spending a decade working in arts administration in Seattle, Myers moved to Portland in 2012. There she began to focus on her own work, creating fine art prints and greeting cards. In early 2016, she relocated again to Bend, bringing her closer to the environments that inspire her work and inform her themes of exploration. Myers works primarily in acrylic on canvas, pen and ink and also wood panels, but said her biggest passion is the creation of murals.

MOLLY REEVES Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty invites you to be our guest for First Thursday gatherings in Portland’s Pearl District. Every month, we open our doors to the community for refreshments and to enjoy the works of local artists, from collages to colorful fashion photography. PAINTING IS A PROCESS for Molly

Reeves. Layers are carefully added upon layers as the imagery takes form, whether it’s a whispering mountain stream slipping through a meadow, a distant mountain horizon or a bed of flowers, each image is developed through process. The notion that an idea can be realized only through the addition of color and layers mirrors Reeves own less-than-direct path to becoming an award-winning artist. A graduate of Portland State University’s fine arts program, Reeves began her career as a painter more than two decades

ago before taking a detour. Reeves put her artwork on hold in the 1980s, enrolling at Oregon State University where she earned a degree in mechanical engineering. It wasn’t until the mid ‘90s that Reeves turned her focus back to the canvas to continue her explorations of light, color and landscape. Reeves describes her style as an evolutionary mix of impressionism, realism and plein air. It’s an approach that has earned her accolades from critics and peers who have bestowed numerous awards upon Reeves for her work, including the first place award in watercolor at

JAN YOUNGMAN Take in art and atmosphere every third Thursday at our Lake Oswego office as Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty joins nearby shops and restaurants for monthly art walks. Listen to live music, visit our wine bar and meet one of the featured artists showcased for the winter season. FOR JAN YOUNGMAN, painting is a

lifelong pursuit. After moving to Portland with her family in the 1970s, she took art classes at Portland Community College. She joined the Oregon Society of Artists, Painters Showcase and Lake Area Artists to hone her craft. “It’s a wonderful journey that takes you into so many unexpected and surprising places,” said Youngman. “There’s something magical about turning a blank canvas into something you’ve created from nothing.” Today, Youngman, 80, paints with a group of four other women artists at a studio in Aloha, Oregon they call the

Florence Gallery. They met when some of the women came to the printing business that Youngman owned with her husband. After holding workshops in a variety of styles of art, the five women decided to form a collective where they could support each other. Since then, they’ve painted together every Tuesday, inspiring one another with their commitment to art. “We have a really great time painting together,” said Youngman. “We help each other, as far as getting ideas and getting critiques.” Youngman’s paintings feature classic Pacific Northwest landscapes, from the

Willamette River and Mt. Hood to covered bridges and the Oregon Coast. She primarily uses pastels in her work. Though she describes herself as a traditionalist, Youngman is inspired by contemporary art. Even at 80 she is still looking for ways to further hone her craft and refine her artistic voice. “It’s the process and great friends that keep me motivated to continue this wonderful journey for the rest of my life.”

REID TREVARTHEN Venture to downtown Vancouver on a First Friday to join in the exciting activities at our monthly art walks. Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty is pleased to participate in cultivating a creative art scene. REID TREVARTHEN always wanted

to be a painter but found the process intimidating. He grew up in an artistic household with a mom who was an art teacher. Finding inspiration in old issues of National Geographic, Trevarthen found his artistic outlet: collage. Trevarthen said that after making his first collage, a self-portrait, out of cut-up scraps from the magazine, he was hooked. Trevarthen, now 25, graduated from The Evergreen State College. He names artists such as Chuck Close, Jasper Johns and Salvador Dali as his artistic inspirations.

| W I N T E R 2 0 1 7

His collages today are generally small in scale, filled with detail created by small scraps of magazines glued together. “In making my collages, I try to mimic the process of going through life,” Trevarthen said in his artist’s statement. “I build up images using small individual pieces that both have meaning on their own, but also gain meaning through interacting with other pieces.” The collages vary from abstract landscapes of the Pacific Northwest to detailed portraits of himself and his friends, though his style and approach is ever changing.

December 2 Januar y 5 Februar y 3 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Cascade Sotheby's International Realty 402 W. 8th Street Vancouver, WA 98660 360.419.5600

“My dream is to marry the two, the realist and the abstract,” said Trevarthen. “I’ve been trying to blend those more.” Trevarthen also said that he hasn’t completely ruled out his first dream of becoming a painter. He said that, lately, he has been trying to introduce elements of painting into his collages. “If you could paint with paper, what would that look like?” he asked.

New Day Rising Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty joins landmark Vancouver development FOR YEARS after the Boise Cascade paper

mill closed, Vancouver residents saw an eyesore on the edge of town, a rusted out industrial site that had more in common with the city’s past than its future. Where others saw decay, developer Barry Cain saw opportunity. More than a decade later, Cain’s Tualatinbased Gramor Development has broken ground on what promises to be Vancouver’s most ambitious redevelopment project. More than 3,000 residential units are planned on the more than twenty-acre site along the Columbia River. There are also plans for Class A office space, retail shops, restaurants and more on the site. The centerpiece: a $27 million public park on the Columbia River that will connect downtown Vancouver to the waterfront, something that hasn’t existed for more than a century. Among the first tenants to sign on with

| W I N T E R 2 0 1 7

the transformational development is Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty, which will move its flagship Washington location there as part of the project’s phase one development. Sotheby’s expects to open its doors in early 2018, welcoming clients into the new stateof-the-art offices in what promises to be Vancouver’s signature development. “We are so excited about the future of this extraordinary development and wanted to be on the ground floor,” said Cascade Sotheby’s CEO Deb Tebbs. “Cascade Sotheby’s focuses on selling extraordinary properties for extraordinary individuals, so this was a perfect fit for our brand.” In addition to Sotheby’s new offices, visitors to the Waterfront project will have plenty to see. A newly constructed pier and park will offer views and access to the water. There will also be multiple options for dining Wordstock and nightlife, including plans for six total

restaurants. Two of those properties are already under contract. Twigs Bistro and Martini Bar and WildFin American Grill are set to open as anchor tenants in 2018. In total, phase one will comprise roughly five city blocks with another fifteen blocks slated for subsequent phases. When complete, the development is expected to represent a roughly $1.5 billion investment in the former paper mill site. In the near term, much of the development will focus on the development of the waterfront, including the park and pier area that will house the planned restaurants and retail. Fifty-five “boutique” residential units will be integrated into the “Shops at the Waterfront Way,” along with 160 apartments. Townhomes are expected to be added during subsequent phases of buildout, rounding out the residential mix. The result is a combination of office, retail, residential and public spaces designed to lure and retain talented young workers in a modern livework-play environment, said developer Cain. “There is strong pent-up demand to be in urban Vancouver. People who already live in Vancouver don’t want to move to Portland to get the urban experience. We are a downtown that has an active retail and restaurant life and this project has merged together with that,” said Cain. With south-facing views toward Mt. Hood and the Cascade Range over the iconic Columbia River, the property has a unique position on the once sleepy edge of downtown Vancouver, he said. “I don’t think people know what an amazing piece of property this is. This has been a first for me. I didn’t appreciate it like I do now,” said Cain. “We knew we wanted to make this into a place that was a front door for Vancouver, but we also wanted to make it into a top five destination for anyone who comes to the Vancouver-Portland area. I think we are doing that,” he said.

Office Happenings By hosting local gatherings, Cascade Sotheby's International Realty is connecting with neighbors to create relationships and enrich the community around us. Our lineup of exciting events gives us a chance to bring people together who share similar interests, such as discovering new art and artists. Even better is the opportunity to give back, as many of these events benefit local non-profits.

OREGON COAST Once the nearly exclusive province of loggers and fishermen, the small towns and villages along the Oregon Coast have blossomed into destinations that draw visitors from around the country. From the raw beauty of the rugged and unspoiled coastline to the boutique shops and award-winning restaurants, the coast has a nearly universal appeal. It’s the natural beauty and seemingly endless opportunities for exploration that lead the way. Destinations such as Ecola State Park in Cannon Beach, Oswald West State Park near Manzanita, and Cape Perpetua, south of Yachats, offer scenic hikes through miles of old growth forest with spectacular ocean vistas. While unrivaled runs of king salmon and bright winter-run steelhead draw anglers to emerald rivers, families enjoy watching the winter whale migration. Towns offer activities as varied as the annual Yoga Festival in Cannon Beach, glass blowing in Lincoln City and learning about the sea and marine life at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. The backdrop is a rich offering of restaurants, galleries and cultural activities inspired by the sea and all that this environment has to offer. Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty has expanded its presence to offer listings up and down the coast, working with buyers and sellers through its offices in Cannon Beach, Gearhart and Manzanita.
