GOLF Bandon to Get Second Short Course

Serious golfers tend to avoid so-called par-3 golf courses, but at Bandon Dunes no stay is complete without a round at Bandon Preserve, a minimalist masterpiece designed by the team of Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore. Beginning in 2018, and possibly as early as next year, Bandon golf pilgrims will have a second par-3 option with the addition of a yet-tobe-named Tom Doak-designed course. The course will feature 11 holes ranging in length from roughly 80 yards to 200 yards located just south of Bandon Preserve. The course will be slightly longer than the existing par 3 and nestled into the dramatic dunescape with views of the adjacent Pacific Ocean.

GROWTH Bend Urban Growth Proposal Progresses

In April, the Bend City Council gave approval to a planned expansion of the city’s urban growth boundary. The expansion, which will increase the city’s boundary by approximately 2,000 acres aims to accommodate population growth through 2028 and allow for an influx of approximately 17,000 new homes and 21,000 jobs during that time. The approval advances the boundary proposal toward additional public hearings and eventual review by the state in a process the city estimates could be completed later this year.

In July, Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort in Bend began construction on a new chairlift on the mountain’s east side. The new high-speed quad lift, named Cloudchaser, will open up 635 acres of terrain to the resort and add 6.2 miles of groomed runs, bringing Mt. Bachelor’s total skiable terrain to 4,318 acres. The first new chairlift installed at Mt. Bachelor since 2006, Cloudchaser is estimated to cost $6 million and will be able to accommodate up to 2,400 passengers per hour. Mt. Bachelor plans to start testing the lift in mid-December in order to be open in time for Christmas.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING Portland Eyes Housing Tax

Faced with a shortage of affordable housing for renters as well as potential homeowners, Portland officials are eyeing a property tax that they hope will raise $260 million to address the issue. The proposed tax, which was approved in June by Portland City Councilors, has been referred to Portland voters who will have a chance to approve or defeat the measure in November. If approved, the initiative would create a new property tax for all PDX homeowners at $.42 per $1,000 of assessed value, or roughly $105 for a house valued at $250,000. The tax is intended to provide housing assistance to Portland residents who make 60 percent or less of the median household income with additional incentives for the construction of multi-family housing. 10

Mid-Century Panache A Central Oregon builder tailors classic style for the modern age

THANKS TO RECENT SHOWS like Mad Men, as well as the availability of classic furniture pieces such as the Eames lounge chair and the Noguchi table, the mid-century modern aesthetic is more popular than ever. But for builder Dennis Szigeti, managing partner of Leader Builders in Bend, it’s a design approach that transcends trendiness or nostalgia. “The mid-century style is something that I’ve spent a lot of time studying,” said Szigeti. “I’ve probably got about twenty books that I’ve read, and it’s a style that I keep trying to perfect.” Szigeti finds the aesthetic to be timeless and easily adaptable to the contemporary lives of today’s homeowners. “We have embraced the architecture of the 50s and 60s and converted it into more usable and functional floor plans, with an emphasis on trying to stay true to the style,” he said. Szigeti’s primary influence for this home was the work of Joseph Eichler, a real estate developer based in California from 1949 to 1966. “He was trying to create homes that were really beautiful, but that the average person could buy,” said Szigeti. Eichler pioneered the “California Modern” aesthetic, often incorporating open floor plans, post and beam construction and large expanses of glass into his homes. Those characteristics, said Szigeti, are equally suited to the climate and culture of Central Oregon. Since the building technology of Eichler’s era was not as advanced as today’s, upgrades to older homes can prove both 

costly and labor intensive. “Homes weren’t super well-insulated because they had a lot of glass,” said Szigeti. To avoid such problems, Szigeti built this home to put sustainability front and center. He used the Portland-based Earth Advantage certification program to ensure the home maximized energy efficiency and minimized resource consumption. Szigeti said he started by “creating a really good building envelope.” That means that windows are Energy Star-rated, ducts have been tested for air leaks, and the furnace is 96 percent efficient, ultimately conserving natural resources while saving future homeowners money on utility bills. Inside, the thoughtful placement of the windows is meant to evoke the Eichler style and let in an abundance of natural light, while still encouraging privacy where it’s needed most. For instance, in the social sphere of the living room, two tiers of windows stretch to the vaulted ceiling and offer a pleasing view of the neighborhood. In areas that require more privacy, like the bedrooms and bath, horizontal transom windows provide discretion while still bringing in light and style. “That type of window was very popular with the mid-century moderns,” said Szigeti. “It pulls the horizontality of the style into the architecture.” 14

For the interior finish selection, Szigeti drew on his wife’s design expertise. The couple often chose materials true to the mid-century period. However, he notes, “We stayed away from the avocado green appliances and orange countertops,” Szigeti said. Instead, he installed oak wire-brushed flooring throughout the main living space, which is complemented by the warm wood ceiling beams and the many Douglas fir solid core doors throughout. A three-sided fireplace provides an era-appropriate room divider without disrupting the overall flow. Its dry-stacked stone lends elegance and textural contrast. In the kitchen, a backsplash composed of cement tiles plays nicely with the porcelain tile countertop. Custom cabinets crafted in rift-sawn white oak are sleek and simple, yet still supply storage and function. Handmade period light fixtures overhead add subtle vintage flair. All in all, Szigeti and his team have produced a testament to an iconic style while delivering a house that can keep up with modern life. “We’re taking the spirit of that time period and creating homes that we feel are more appropriate to how people are living nowadays,” he said. 

FINDING THE HOUSE felt like it was meant to be.

In 1989, Lee Havens and her husband, Scott, were happily ensconced in a Northwest Contemporary-style home on the canal in Lake Oswego. On sunny weekends, they would take their boat out. It was on these trips that they would find themselves dreamily imagining a life in a home just a bit closer to the water’s edge. Then one day, Havens was driving on a nearby street, and she spotted the perfect prospect for their relocation fantasies. “It was really a cute house that needed a lot of work,” Havens remembers. Best of all, it was right on the lake. She walked up to the front door to inquire whether the owners might want to sell, but no one answered her knock. A week later, Havens was at a baby shower and a friend mentioned that she was putting her house on the market.



Havens agreed to stop by, not knowing that when she did so, she would be in for a surprise. “It was the same house,” she said. She and her husband made an offer that day and quickly became the owners of a lakefront property. The house had been built in the Tudor Revival style in 1925 and remodeled by Portland architect Richard Sundeleaf in 1956. By the time the Havens bought it, it was in need of an assortment of repairs. The roof and siding were worn, and more alarmingly, all of the plumbing and electrical systems needed to be updated. “There had been electrical fires and all of our plumbing was galvanized steel,” Havens said. The couple consulted with their brother-in-law, architect Robert Thompson. With his help, and the construction know-how offered by another brother-in-law, Don Reed, the couple initiated a whole house renovation that would make the 

home safe for their family and transform it into the lake cottage of their dreams. To that end, the interior footprint was altered entirely to encourage better flow. An addition made space for a second floor den, as well as an expanded kitchen and family room on the lower level. Wherever possible, the couple saved elements of the original home in order to preserve its character. This included a clinker brick chimney, top-nailed oak floors on the main level, glass door hardware, and coved ceilings. The front door remained, complete with its speakeasy window and an adjacent interior alcove for a telephone. Two fireplaces still sport their original mantles and in the dining room, a built-in corner cabinet conveys vintage appeal. In the kitchen, the copper hood above the island is also original. “A lot of the walls have a little bow to them. They’re not perfect,” said Havens, of keeping so much of her home’s singular elements. “But that’s okay, that’s the charm. It gives you a story.” On the exterior, the couple replaced windows that 

While many elements of the original cottage have been preserved, an addition created the necessary square footage for a remodeled and expanded kitchen. The copper hood is one of the original elements the owners were able to keep amongst updates.

were drafty and leaking, and expanded the openings to improve the views of the lake. The dilapidated siding was exchanged for gray cedar shingles to achieve a true cottage style. Now, the lake can be appreciated from so many spots – whether that’s the living room couch where Havens enjoys her mornings or the back lawn that slopes down to the water. The latter is perfect for hosting friends and family gatherings, as the Havens love to entertain. “Our real goal was to open up the home to people,” said Havens. “Just to have a place where a lot of people could come enjoy the lake. We wanted to share it.” 

Makeovers Made Easy A housing upgrade doesn’t have to mean packing up. Many homeowners opt to stay put and trade-up by remodeling rather than deal with the trade-offs of moving. This can be as simple as removing a few walls or as complex as adding an entire story to a residence. Remodel expert Nate Ewen of Neil Kelly discussed how to get the most from your remodel. Interest rates are low and the housing and rental market is very tight right now in many places. Has this impacted the demand for remodels and additions? Yes, these two factors, among others, are fueling the demand for remodel work. With interest rates low, or relatively low, remodeling is very appealing and on the rise. Many homeowners are deciding to live in their homes longer and remodel or add a new space rather than face the home buying and selling process or market uncertainties. What are some of the most important things for a homeowner to consider when planning or contemplating a remodel project? Budget, priorities and timeline. These three aspects of remodeling must be addressed at the first step of planning

a remodel. Each aspect affects the other two, so the interrelationships must be considered and defined. For example, grand remodel objectives may involve larger budgets and require more time to design and build, while narrowing the remodel priorities and considering sub-priorities can decrease the budget range. What are some of the common mistakes and pitfalls made by homeowners in the remodel process? A general pitfall would be lack of planning: not having thorough plans and written specifications. A complete design and a fixed contract price can pave the way for a smoother construction process. If you have well-defined contract documents and a professional project manager coordinating the remodel efforts, you can respect the plan  and trust the project manager to conduct their work.

What are some strategies to plan for the disruptions associated with remodels? When should homeowners and builders address these issues? Depending on the nature of a remodel project, there are varying degrees of disruption to the normal living conditions in the home that should be addressed during the project design phase. A kitchen remodel is one of the most disruptive projects to normal living conditions because the kitchen space is not fully functional virtually until the last day of the schedule. In these cases, planning may involve establishing temporary kitchen measures such as a microwave and refrigerator in the garage, living in an RV during construction or planning a vacation during a particular segment of the construction phase to avoid some of the disruption. Are there any particular styles or trends right now that add value and curb appeal? Several ways to add value to a home include: adding more accessible storage in a kitchen, creating larger, curbless-entry showers, and many remodels involve the removal or opening of walls to create the open living spaces we desire for our family life styles. Are there any advantages to remodeling versus selling and trading up? Cost is a big advantage to remodeling versus selling. Buying or building a home to gain something your current home lacks is a much larger investment, in most cases, than remodeling or adding that element to your existing home. Also, many homeowners find that they like their home, their neighborhood and their location so a remodel is much more appealing than moving and more cost effective than purchasing or building a new home.

What are the most rewarding types of projects to work on and why? Regardless of the type of remodel, I find the most satisfying projects to be any that truly improve the remodeled space to benefit the homeowners needs, function and use of the space. The recognition and enjoyment a homeowner expresses upon seeing the achievement of the original project objectives and how the finished product improves their use of the space is priceless. Not much else is more rewarding than that. 

How Angel was rescued from a life of neglect.

A place to live where you play IT WASN'T TOO LONG AGO that Lake Oswego’s Lakewood

Theatre Company gave us “Our Town,” Thornton Wilder’s meditation about a life and living in a small American town. A Stage Manager introduces us to the folks and their desire for community and quest for “companionship and friendship.” A hymn sung periodically shows us Wilder’s emphasis on stability and tradition. In many ways Our Town could well have been our town, Lake Oswego. The history of “our town” is also one of transformation and rebirth. In the 1890s Oswego was a rip-roaring manufacturing town. The First Addition residential area was platted from A Avenue (not “Avenue A”) to G Avenue; and from 1st to 10th Streets. By the Great Depression, Oregon Iron Works’ steel smelter had gone cold. Now restored, the smelter tower dominates George Rogers Park by the Willamette River. (That’s “Wil-LAMM-It,” by the way.) First Addition remains an historic enclave of gravel-edged streets and Craftsman bungalows, and the magnificent library

Bend’s Flagline Trail

There are literally hundreds of miles of singletrack around Central Oregon, but come late summer and early fall, locals turn their attention toward the Flagline trail. This marquee ride has all the hallmarks of a great Central Oregon route—long steady climbs and an extended, flowing descent through a mature ponderosa and hemlock forest. But don’t try to ride it before Aug. 15. The trail is closed for elk calving season prior to then. The area's summer closure and high elevation mean it’s one of the few trails in prime condition after the dog days of summer. 34

Springwater on the Willamette

Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

For a perfectly Portland ride, explore the city’s eastside along the paved path connecting the city to the westernmost leg of the Springwater Corridor. From downtown, cycle across the Willamette River over the bikefriendly Hawthorne Bridge, and ride for 3 miles along the bank between OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) and the Sellwood Bridge, passing Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge and Oaks Amusement Park along the way.

Tucked between the Pacific Ocean and a series of lakes, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area encompasses more than 40 miles of beaches and dunes used for various recreation including off-highway vehicle use, hiking, horseback riding and fat tire biking. For downhill dune fun, rent a fat tire bike and head for the Siltcoos and Tahkenitch areas (closed to motorized vehicles) or cruise along the shoreline for a fast, flat beach ride on hard-packed sand.



Banks-Vernonia State Trail

Thirty miles outside of Portland, the BanksVernonia State Trail stretches through fields and forests along a former railroad corridor. Start at any of six trailheads and cross over thirteen bridges and two railroad trestles. The paved hiking and biking trail comprises 22 miles of gentle grade, except one steep section with switchbacks, and provides spectacular views of the Coast Range.

Sunriver Bike Path

Great for a casual bike ride with kids, Sunriver offers more than 30 miles of paved multi-use bike paths. Smooth trails loop through the woods and under roads via two-way tunnels, taking riders out along the Deschutes River. Take the River Loop north toward the marina, airport and stables or follow the 6-mile trail out to Benham Falls.

Touted as the largest used and new bookstore in the world, Powell’s City of Books in the Pearl District occupies an entire city block and houses approximately one million books. Pick up a map to help navigate the store’s nine color-coded rooms with more than 3,500 different sections and don’t forget to visit the rare book room located on the top floor.

Jody Swanson, owner of the Cloud and Leaf has been connecting coastal readers with good books since 2004. Tidy shelves store a wide variety of genres, including a large section devoted to Northwest authors. The last independent bookstore in Tillamook County, Cloud and Leaf received one of 81 grants made by author James Patterson to independent bookstores in 2014.

Newly rebranded in 2016, Herringbone Books in Redmond is a store saved by its city. In 2015, owner Kaci Aslamov launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise the money needed to acquire the store and received more than one hundred donations in just one month. The store hosts monthly talks by local authors, coloring nights and other literary events.

In 2011, a group of friends got together to sew and Sundance Art Quilters was born., Artists Barbara Doust-Boggess, Helen Brisson, Dianne Browning, Julia Jeans, Kris Lang and Leotie Richards come from different backgrounds, but are stitched together by their desire to create, critique and collaborate on pieces. The group’s next exhibit, “A Study in Color” includes shades ranging from aubergine and turquoise to emerald and rouge. Infused with hues framed in fabric, each color piece portrays the graphic style of the member who made it.

Specializing in mixed media and painting, MaryLea Harris creates whimsical and colorful images of leaves and trees outlined in creams and whites to represent the interplay between positive and negative spaces in art and life. “My work features brightly colored backgrounds created by layering paint and scraping it away with plastic gift cards,” said Harris. “These cards are wonderful tools not only for scraping paint but also serve as a reminder of our consumerdriven society and how quickly we replace nature with man-made materials.”

Nearly thirty Central Oregon fiber artists from the Central Oregon Studio Art Quilt Associates worked on September’s “Doors” exhibit. With names like “Back Alley” and “Around the Corner,” each piece of 18 x 40 inch artwork explores a different aspect of doors as portals, thresholds, entrances, passageways and a frame for new experiences and memories. “It is a pleasure and a gift to be associated with so many talented artists,” said Central Oregon SAQA leader Jan Tetzlaff of the project. “The results are as diverse and beautiful as the artists themselves.”

A graduate of The Evergreen State College, Reid Trevarthen is a life-long resident of the Pacific Northwest who cites artists like Chuck Close, Jasper Johns and Salvador Dali, among his inspirations. Trevarthen uses the medium of collage to visualize the interconnected and complex relationships between people and the portrayal of life’s endless possible outcomes. “In making my collages, I try to mimic the process of going through life,” he said. “I try to echo life’s unpredictability by introducing elements whose effects on the artwork are only clear after they’ve been glued down.”

Having lived and travelled across the world, Teri Tompkins Read remains fascinated with the tiny things, a pattern reflected in her shots of the ocean as well as flora and fauna. Read’s works often highlight things not normally noticed, capturing familiar sights in interesting and artistic ways. “I am invigorated by the nature all around us every day,” said Read. “I am fascinated by nature’s textures and patterns, captivated by her colors and shapes, and especially drawn to plants and the interplay of light and water.”

Portland’s Raina Stinson has had her work published in magazines, books, and exhibited nationally and internationally. In 2014, her image “Alluring” won first place for a single image at the LensCulture Exposure Awards. Most recently in April 2016, her photograph “Ryder” was among 25 out of 750 photos included in the New York Center for Photographic Arts “Interiors” exhibition. Known for her authenticity, use of color and thoughtprovoking imagery, Stinson’s works portray fashion elements with a sense of vintage flair.

George Porter’s artistic journey began in childhood when his mother showed him how to layer colored crayons and scratch through them to reveal the colors underneath. He never stopped drawing and went on to study the paintings of the Renaissance masters at Stanford University. Housebound after surgery in 2014, he pored over books of the Hudson River School trying to understand and imitate techniques of landscape and light. An active member of the Oregon Society of Artists, Porter describes his painting style as a blend of classic Renaissance art, Neo-Impressionism and Luminism.

An Oregon resident for more than two decades, Anna Porter began painting watercolors during art therapy in 1994, where she learned to pick up a brush and go with the flow. “While some artists consider watercolor unforgiving and difficult, I love the way that the water and paint effortlessly flow across the paper, creating unique surprises within my paintings,” Porter says. An avid gardener, Porter draws inspiration from the flowers and forests of the Pacific Northwest which she photographs and paints out of her Lake Oswego studio.

A Salvadorian artist residing in Lake Oswego, Evelin Peralta Marsh paints with a unique artistic perspective drawn from two very diverse worlds. Weaving together acrylics and oils mixed with resin, her works showcase a heightened sense of emotion with vivid colors and abstract imagery. Her work incorporates both the intense urban environment of El Salvador as well as aspects of the serene Pacific Northwest. A successful builder and designer, her art can be found in many area homes. Marsh believes that whether in a living room or gallery, art should delight and inspire.

From zoo animals to the abstract, Katey Sandy sees every painting subject as an experiment. “I love to let each composition unfold and change as I work, and use a variety of approaches to interact with what is happening during the process,” said Sandy. “My finished works are not realistic renderings but my expressionistic interpretations.” Studying art at San Diego State, Sandy worked in education for 35 years before she returned to painting in 2007. She teaches painting and design for the Mature Learning Program at Clark College.

With a passion for light, color and realism, Jennifer deWeber creates art in various forms that range from portraits and florals to landscapes and ink painting on silk scarves. A Washington state resident, she enjoys raising animals and reading books as well as spending time in the garden among the flowers she loves to paint. DeWeber employs a direct painting method and has described her work as reflecting a “love for beauty in the landscape and the ever intriguing human face.”

Drawing since she was a child, Earlene Holmstrom focuses her art on the human face and figures formed in charcoal and soft pastels. After retiring in 2002, she took up art in earnest and refrains from using projectors when working from photos. “I feel very strongly about creating ‘original’ art,” Holmstrom said. “I do not ‘trace and paint’ because I believe these practices deaden my creativity. Instead, my process includes the use of thumbnail sketches, color sketches, and keen observation before putting pastel to paper.”
