Grace and Ken Evanstad own Domaine Serene in the Willamette Valley and recently gifted $6 million to Linfield College’s Center for Wine Education. The gift is the single largest donation to wine education ever in Oregon, and one of the largest donations the McMinnville-based university has ever received. The donations will be used to develop a bachelor’s program focused on training wine professionals, and the Wine Studies major will be the first of its kind in the United States. Oregon’s agricultural bounty extends beyond the Willamette Valley, and a new food tour highlights the array of culinary treasures on the Oregon Coast. “Ascent: Climbing Explored” is a new exhibit at the High Desert Museum in Bend that tackles the history and geology of climbing in the West. From the 19th century quests to answer scientific questions to the modern climbers pushing the sport to unbelievable heights, the exhibit showcases all aspects of the climbing world. The exhibit blends the science of the geological formations that climbers take on and the art that captures the seemingly impossible feats. In 2010, a Bend family created a very special home. The 5,652-square-foot house was only the second built in the neighborhood of Tetherow, which sits in an expansive high desert and forested landscape on the west side of Bend. The three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath home would be luxurious, to include the finest contemporary design and

But it would also be purposefully livable, meant to provide high functionality, comfort and multiple well-planned spaces for a busy family of four. “The goal was to explore the possibilities for indoor-outdoor living in Central Oregon while creating a layout that really worked well for the family,” recalled Eric Meglasson, designer with

Pique Collaborative, who contributed to the project alongside architect Peter Jahnke and builder James Fagan of Timberline Construction. “A house to live in well is what drove the layout,” added Meglasson. That task began with a design for the one-acre lot that would employ thoughtful division of space and a dynamic mix of metal, concrete, glass and stucco. The two-story home was built around a large interior courtyard, through which runs a river-like water feature. Around that, the house exists in distinct sections, each of which is embodied with a unique function.

There is a place for everything—formal entertaining—teen gathering—working from home—large gatherings for meals—and several outdoor spaces for different uses. Huge windows connect the spaces through open sightlines, so that no matter where someone is in the house, they never feel totally cut off from other rooms. “There was a level of focus to make sure that the family could spend time together, while also finding their own space,” said Meglasson. “The adult side of the house has the master bedroom, the home office, a formal living room and an elegant side patio. The family

side has a informal living room and a large patio. The kitchen has a large island with plenty of seating and becomes the common gathering place.” The home office is on the upper story, slightly set apart, accessed by a short exposed bridge. “The intent was a work-life/family-life separation—the creation of a mental and physical separation to the office,” said Meglasson. Views from the office are superior to those from the master bedroom, so that time spent working during the day could be passed with views of the Cascade Range and the high desert. The office windows face the mountains, and the office deck faces the golf course and the garage’s rooftop garden. Two upstairs bedrooms intended for the children are well removed from the main living spaces, each with built-in desks and incredible mountain views. One room has inset LED lighting installed in the ceiling, mimicking the night sky. A shared bathroom has two sinks, a separate powder room and plenty of counter space. A sixteen-foot rock climbing wall extends from downstairs to the upstairs hall, providing an alternate (and fun) way to access the upstairs bedrooms. Adjacent to a family living space, downstairs at the base of the climbing wall, is a workout room, as well as another large patio. A full-sized bocce ball court and a lawn large enough to stage regulation-size volleyball games are on this side of the house, as well

as a hot tub tucked against the house. A greenhouse room that the former owner used for her orchid collection is found up a short set of stairs, connecting through to the home’s interior. The kitchen and the formal living room are connected by the dining room, which itself sits in a suspended, enclosed glass bridge. “The dining room sits literally over the water feature, and the sounds of the small river trickle through open windows into the dining room,” said Meglasson. Off the informal living room is a 14

wall of windows that slides open to the outside, extending the interior space to the outdoors. “This is a great home for indoor-outdoor living,” said Ellie Anderson, broker with Cascade Sotheby’s. “There are tons of doors to the outside and many patios. There is so much flexibility.” The interior courtyard is beautifully landscaped and provides even more outdoor seating. The small stream that runs through the house is prominent here. “The water feature begins at the front door and reemerges in the

courtyard after a small waterfall and then flows into backyard,” said Meglasson. Throughout the home, sightlines reveal mountain views, high desert landscape and the Tetherow golf course. Homes have been built up around the house in the eight years since its construction, but incredible views remain uninterrupted. “The home was designed to bring nature in, and there are so many different views to take in,” said Anderson. PROFILE

ON HIS VERY FIRST VISIT to Oregon, Rollin Soles fell in love with the Willamette Valley. “I knew in my heart that this is where I belonged.” That fateful trip happened almost four decades ago, in 1979. Soles was born and raised in Euless, Texas, and earned a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from Texas A&M and a master’s degree in enology and viticulture at the University of California at Davis. His love of the science of grape-growing and winemaking were firmly in place by the time he first set foot in Oregon. Now, he knew exactly where he wanted to grow his grapes and make his wine. “The next years were a dive to get vineyard and wine experience,” he recalled. “I came up with a plan to grow grapes and make wine in the Willamette Valley.” In 1986, Soles came to Oregon for good. He purchased land near Newberg the following year, a gorgeous piece of property that drapes down the southwestern slope of the Chehalem Mountain Range at 400 feet elevation. The land would be ideal for growing wine grapes. But planting it would have to wait. Soles was already deeply immersed in another project—Argyle Winery, which he founded in Dundee in 1987. Argyle would go on to become one of the most celebrated wineries in the state—arguably, in the nation. But these were early days, long before the Willamette Valley was proven as an ideal place to grow pinot noir, or even before pinot noir was a well-known wine varietal, renowned by critics and beloved by wine lovers. “My joke was that one small California winery produced all of the pinot noir that America drank,” said Soles, who is as known for his wit as he is for his handlebar mustache and cowboy hat. “We had an extra tough time of it,” continued Soles, speaking not only of his experience but that of all the winemakers in the region. The rich soils of the Willamette Valley were perfect for growing pinot noir. But the vineyards had to be established from scratch. Experimentation was required, which led to failures and new beginnings. “It blows my mind what we were up against. There were so many strikes against us. But there was nobody more creative, with more passion, than Willamette Valley winemakers.” The collaboration and companionship within the Willamette Valley winemaking community through those early years is what Soles credits with his survival, and that of others,

followed by the subsequent development of the region as a verifiable destination. “We always made space in our lives to lift all of us up at one time. We started doing things collectively that would make Americans like pinot noir. All of the hard work was totally worth it,” he said. “Working together—it was phenomenally gratifying and always had an authentic ring of togetherness.” Argyle grew to an undeniable success, producing dozens of award-winning wines, focusing on sparkling chardonnays and pinot noirs. Soles could easily have rested on his laurels, winding down the years in the barrel room of Argyle. But his Chehalem Mountain land was calling to him. He and his wife Corby had never even gotten around to planting a vineyard, and the land lay in wait. “Sometimes there are good things about not having immediate gratification,” said Soles. In the decades that had passed, the wine industry had dramatically changed. “At that point, viticulture had completely utterly improved. And, I’d been farming for twenty-five years.” In 2001, Rollin and Corby planted the Wits’ End Vineyard on what would become ROCO Winery (RO for Rollin and CO for Corby). “I was able to work with clones I’d used for decades,” said Soles. “I planted on root stocks—we never would have dreamed of doing that in the 1980s. We planted rows with close spacing, which means more leaves, which absorb more sunlight.” The grapes were pinot noir; the wine was excellent. Two years later, ROCO Winery produced the first vintage of Private Stash pinot noir, showcasing the very best of Rollin’s small-lot winemaking skills in a bottle that was eventually served in the White House. “We were so lucky that we didn’t plant until 2001,” he said. “We ended up getting the best out of the Wits’ End Vineyard.” Again, success was in hand. Again, Soles could have simply continued doing what he was doing, but innovation is in his blood. “With ROCO, the saying ‘never say never’ has never been more true,” he said. “I was just going to make pinot noir. But then Corby said, ‘I kind of like chardonnay.’ So we planted chardonnay. We began doing new things with sparkling wine. Then we made a tiny bit of rosé.” He laughed, marveling at the journey he’s taken and continues to take. “We’re releasing the first ever ROCO rosé this year! I call it ‘mission creep’. I’ve

been able to take what I’ve learned and tweak it, give it the unique ROCO style.” After more than three decades of growing wine businesses from bare earth, marketing wines to the world, adapting and changing and growing, one singular challenge has been a constant for Soles. “The weather,” he said. “The weather of the Willamette Valley has been the most challenging aspect of my work here. The growing seasons are so different in the Willamette Valley, from one to the next.” And yet, ever the seeker of challenge and innovation, Soles sees the flip side of his primary antagonist. “It’s caused me to be a better grape-grower and winemaker. Without the weather, I wouldn’t have attained the same level of excitement. If we have 20

an easy growing season, I love them, but then I feel a tinge of disappointment that I didn’t get to go toe-to-toe with nature and respond.” As the Willamette Valley has come into the light, wineries have sprung up all around and wine lovers have poured in, but community is still at the heart of the matter for Soles. ROCO donates wine and money to local nonprofits, contributing to the betterment of the Willamette Valley, and Soles continues to speak out for the wines that he makes and that his compatriots make. “If we speak with one voice to consumers, it brings more attention to us all,” he said. “For the tiny size of the Willamette Valley vineyard acreage, we do get more attention. We punch above our weight.” 

Outdoor Style for Every Day From patio materials to lighting, “flow” to furniture, outdoor style is getting more elaborate. For people looking to spruce up their outdoor space, it’s difficult to tell which bandwagons to jump on. Karen Ford, a landscape architect based in Portland, has three decades in the business and gave her perspective on which current trends to embrace—and some to modify.

Outdoors, Upscale

Good riddance to cheap plastic patio chairs. An overarching trend in outdoor decor is the incorporation of indoor comforts, meaning luxurious furniture sets, carpets and even TVs. “This last year, I can’t tell you how much furniture I’ve ordered,” remarked Ford. Her advice for creating a well-appointed living room outside is taking a “less is more” approach with durability and functionality in mind (so, leave the TV inside). Bright, comfy cushions for outdoor pieces are all the rage. But, with unpredictable Northwest weather, Ford advises forgoing plush accents. “Cushions are a drag,” she said candidly. She would similarly eschew outdoor carpets. Instead, modify this “pops of color” idea by finding manufacturers who produce brightly colored pieces, or invest in flowering plants for natural vividness. Open Flow

Seamlessness between outdoor and indoor spaces continues to gain popularity. Massive glass doors that can slide completely out of the way create an uninterrupted indoor/outdoor transition. “I’ve done several projects with those huge doors. They’re hot right now,” affirmed Ford. The effect, especially when coupled with a manicured garden, can be stunning. 

Ford had one caution. If you are adding large doors to an existing structure that was not engineered for this specific element, they can become a maintenance headache. “I designed a deck system and the owners wanted those huge doors,” she explained. “They’ve had issues with leaking air and water.” If you’re building a new home, design the doors into the house. Or, if you are adding them, make sure to weigh your options carefully. The Ground Up

The “flooring” fads of outdoor spaces are varied, from dyed concrete mimicking wood, to turf, pavers and even multicolored rubber squares. Although these trends are “in” now, for patios and decks Ford recommended classics. “I don’t like materials that are trying to look like something they’re not,” said Ford. For decks, Ford likes to use ipe wood, and she frequently builds walls and

benches with juniper. For patios, she recommends natural stone or brick rather than premanufactured pavers. More than anything, she constructs outdoor spaces around nature. Remember to put thought into the flora complementing your outdoor room, so the space is oriented to take full advantage of the natural beauty, while still being incredibly comfortable. Lighting

With careful planning, lighting can take a garden to the next level. Without planning, lighting can ruin an otherwise beautiful place. Here, Ford again emphasized a “less is more” philosophy: “I don’t want my project lit up like Disneyland!” she said with a laugh, while also acknowledging the strides in LED lights that have led her to use them more often. Moonlighting, a technique of putting downcast lights in trees, is trending now with positively enchanting results. Ford

recently used this technique in an oak wetland that became a focal point at night for her client. Her general advice includes not “uplighting” a tree less than forty feet tall, only uplighting trees with beautiful branching structures and knowing when enough is enough with moonlighting. No matter what trends are happening now, Ford said it all comes back to basic design. “I recently sat on an awards jury. We looked at everything: commercial, residential, even wind farms. It all came back to design principles: line, rhythm, repetition, symmetry/asymmetry. If a project adheres to those principles it will have a successful end.” Ultimately, each outdoor space should highlight beauty. With functionality in mind and consideration for the realities of local climate, a stunning, luxurious outdoor room is just around the corner. 

She and her husband started visiting a vacation home in the area in the 1970s, and bought property and built a home in 2003. Off-grid living can have many connotations, but in the Three Rivers Recreation Area neighborhood, off-grid living doesn’t sacrifice luxury living. There are about 600 deeded properties in the private community, and about 200 are developed with homes. Each property boasts a five-acre minimum size, and undeveloped properties sell for a price between $100,000 and $150,000. Housing styles range from small manufactured homes to large custom homes. Three Rivers has a disc golf course, a shooting range, common land for ATV and dirt bike riding and private access to Lake Billy Chinook. The community is also gated, and a community center is being built from money raised by collecting deposits on recyclable bottles.

Sweet said he enjoys the small community and unique lifestyle there. “It’s a relatively close knit community,” he said. “At Three Rivers, you do a lot of things together. We rely on each other. You get more of an old town, small community atmosphere.” 

Jacksonville | June 12-September 14 Peter Britt arrived in Southern Oregon in 1852. A budding photographer with only $5 in his pocket, Britt became one of the original documenters of the new state. The hill provides stunning acoustics, as well as a scenic backdrop, for music performances throughout the summer, which this year will include Father John Misty and Brandi Carlile.
