FORWARD VISION To foster a Central Oregon culture that values lifelong involvement in music where all can actively participate.

MISSION The Cascade School of Music transforms lives and enriches our community by providing exceptional music education and experiences for all Central Oregonians.

FUNDRAISING Cascade School of Music is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Income from tuition covers 65% of our operating expenses, and we must fundraise for the rest. The Cascade School of Music has several fundraising events throughout the year including our gala, “The Gift of Music”. Please visit our website regularly for the most up-to-date information on our fundraising events.

WELCOME TO THE CASCADE SCHOOL OF MUSIC! It’s an exciting time here at the Cascade School of Music! As our community continues to grow and change, the school is also evolving—including our search for a new home. I am delighted to return to Oregon to begin my tenure as third Executive Director for the Cascade School of Music, building upon the success and vision of our previous Directors, current Board, Faculty and Staff. From the life changing effect of music on me as a child with learning disabilities, through formal training at the Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific in California and graduate studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and into my professional life working in both non-profit organizations and corporate finance in the U.S. and the U.K., music has played a pivotal role in my life. Whether you’re looking to develop the mind of your one-year old or maintain your cognitive abilities as a retired senior, we offer private lessons, group classes, workshops and performance ensembles for all ages and levels of study. I invite you to discover, or re-discover, the power and joy of music!

YOUTH ENRICHMENT CLASSES The Enrichment classes at Cascade School of Music emphasize musical skill development that will enhance formal instrumental study. Our instructors use a wide array of classroom materials and/or instruments — both pitched and non-pitched—along with movement (in some classes) to create an inspiring, fun and engaging learning environment. The ultimate purpose of the Youth Enrichment Classes at Cascade School of Music is to grow the gifts and talents of students, and to help foster their love for music. Curriculum builds throughout the term, inspiring a lifelong appreciation of music and giving children the foundation they will need to enjoy success in private instrument and vocal instruction. Keeping a steady beat, playing instruments, dancing, moving creatively, singing, harmonizing, and improvising are all building blocks in the creation of this solid musical foundation. Through these rich, interactive classes, students discover their own creativity and the joy of making music with friends!

The World Music Choir will explore music from around the world. This is an educational choir that will give young singers an introduction to the basics of healthy vocal technique and comfort in their singing. Students will sing songs with beautiful melodies and driving rhythm. Rhythm is foundational to all musicianship, so there will be emphasis on rhythm with the opportunity to play hand percussion instruments and develop a solid sense of musical pulse. Singing in other languages is not only a wonderful cultural experience, it is also a great way to develop vocal skills for sounding vowels and ease in diction. Fun, fun, fun! Student performances are planned throughout the school year. No experience necessary and no auditions.

Cascade Strings, formerly Advanced Awesome After School Orchestra, provides continued focus on learning to play violin, viola, cello, or bass as an ensemble. Students must have successfully completed one year in the Awesome After School Orchestra program, or received placement by instructor approval.

BLUEGRASS JAM WITH GINNY HOLLON, BECKY BROWN, AND VERDA HINKLE

INTERGENERATIONAL, AGES 16+ This is a class designed for players of bluegrass instruments who have limited experience jamming with others and would like to learn more. Students will learn bluegrass etiquette and how to support others. Good bluegrass music has someone taking the lead via voice or instrument while everyone else backs them up. A “good” jammer knows how to listen and support the music. Expect to play a lot. Each session will begin by breaking into individual instrument groups to learn the melody and backup of a tune on your instrument. Once accomplished, all instruments will join together to jam. Students should have a basic knowledge of their instruments, enjoy playing with others and be willing to make mistakes as we learn together. Mandolin and guitar students should be able to strum basic chords (e.g. G, C, D, A) and be ready to learn to play melodies using a flat pick. Fiddle students should be able to play a few simple melodies and be ready to learn backup. The maximum number of students for this class is 10 mandolin players, 10 guitar players, and 10 fiddle players. Tuition $90. We are offering a family member tuition discount. The first student’s tuition rate is $90 and subsequent students receive a reduced tuition rate of $45. 10 class meeting dates will be scheduled between January and May. PRIVATE STUDY One-on-one instruction allows for the greatest possibility of rapid skill development and fosters a deeper connection with music and the instructor. It affords the student an opportunity to progress at their own pace and to study the music to which they are most attracted. Our teachers can also focus on technique issues and individual learning styles. Weekend ensemble and performance opportunities, workshops, and musical field trips help maintain social connections developed in earlier years. Private study is available on piano, guitar, ukulele, electric & upright bass, voice, violin, viola, cello, saxophone, clarinet, flute, drums, percussion, and harp. Private study for piano, guitar, ukulele, and violin begins at age 7. Private study for drums and voice begins at age 8, and private study for woodwinds begins at age 9. For students enrolled in private study, there are strategies that ensure the best possible outcome for success. One strategy is to understand what practice is, which is focusing on areas of growth while playing what is already known. It is the responsibility of either the guardian, or in the case of adult students, the student, to identify the areas of study that are causing struggle and to work on these weaknesses.

26 / CA SCA DE SCHOO L O F M US I C 2 0 1 8 /2 0 1 9

Exploring the possibilities of the instrument is encouraged, and a structured practice routine guarantees the best possible outcome of the student’s and the guardian’s time investment. Other strategies that facilitate success in private study are to establish a regular practice time, to create a practice space, and to structure the practice routine. Advice regarding the following suggestions are as follows: Try to schedule practice time alongside something that is done every day, such as brushing one’s teeth. Have a specific area for practice that is free from other distractions, if possible. Create a structured practice routine like: “Warm Up, Scales, Chords, Practicing a Piece, Sight Reading.” An understanding of these details will give students the best opportunity for success. While learning an instrument is difficult, it is also one of the most rewarding experiences for those who wish to undertake the process and students learn not only music, but also motivation and dedication to any life activity that they may pursue.

FABULOUS LEARNING ENVIRONMENT “I have been an adult student with CSOM for over 10 years, starting at the old Studio Street location. I have been able to participate in both adult group classes and private lessons. All I can say is that when the opportunity arises to be in a CSOM class, I try very hard to make it happen! The music faculty I have worked with have always been so welcoming and accommodating- understanding that an adult student is different from a child, both in ways of learning and schedule needs. Watching the music faculty bring together students of disparate levels (both in one-off performances and in ongoing group classes) is inspirational. I have found myself both above and below other students’ levels, yet the teacher is able to individuate the teaching for everyone, without classes being too complicated or simple. That’s quite a feat! Brand-new beginners through upper level students are made to feel comfortable in a fabulous learning environment. Especially fun is when the instructors get their students together to collaborate! No secret cliques here, only people looking to learn and share in the music. And oh, the front office staff- questions are answered promptly, helpfully, and always kindly. Special arrangements are easily made, communications are open and NOTHING falls through the cracks here. Truly everyone believes in the power of music to bring people joy at Cascade School of Music.” —Janna Bednorz, Bend

INTRODUCING NEW SKILLS “My daughter came to Cascade School of Music with raw talent and a love for music. Not sure of the direction that she wanted to go, she was patiently guided by multiple instructors, each one building on and introducing new skills. It was through CSM that she found her voice. In her multiple years with CSM, Ani has been introduced to a variety of musical genres, has worked with people from all walks of life and has learned what it means to work as part of a team. She has also learned about dedication, responsibility and hard work. Her journey might never have happened if we had not been able to receive a scholarship for her initial venture into music. Because of that scholarship, Ani has been able to find her path, and for that, I am forever grateful.” —Misa Olsen, Bend PR O G R A M G U ID E / 2 7

Kate performed “Arctic Voices” by Griesdale and Haley Jo performed “How Could I Ever Know” from The Secret Garden. Adjudicators for the competition were Michael Gesme, Christian Clark, Peter Brownlee, and Shireen Amini. Marianne Thomas states, “Kate is always prepared for her lesson and always early! She soaks in everything I teach and every week makes progress. She is also innately musical and exhibits natural artistry. Kate is also positive, respectful, and fun to be with.” Cullie Treichler states, “Haley Jo Shaw is a remarkable young woman. She is unassuming with her natural singing talent and a joy to work with. She is dedicated to developing her gift into skillful artistry and yet maintains a light heart in her studies. She is an exquisite human being and her intrinsic beauty is conveyed in her stage presence and singing voice. It is truly an honor to work with her and witness her development of vocal freedom and poise.” PR O G R A M G U ID E / 3 5

ENRICHING OUR FAMILY’S LIVES “What another great year we had with our family at the Cascade School of Music! I am amazed at the momentum that has built up in our house over the last two years, and it all started with your Ready Set Go program and Captain Awesome (Eddie Robinson) whose lighthearted and fun way of working with the kids started our youngest son’s love of the cello. Michael Scott followed up with a year of group cello lessons that were an absolute blast for the kids. And this past year, Julia Bastuschek (aka Mrs. B) playfully took it to the next level with the Advanced Orchestra Class that pushed our guy to learn how to synchronize with other orchestra instruments while still smiling at his own his struggle. Two years into this and he is STILL excited to continue his studies, much to the credit of the CSM staff. Nolan’s enthusiasm about his CSM music lessons has been contagious too. Not only have several friends joined the school for music lessons, but his teenage brother wound up getting bit by the music bug this last year and was so blown away from his teacher, Eric Phillips, that he wound up taking drum lessons this whole past year with him. Just recently, he started private lessons with yet, another musical wizard, Meshem Jackson. We have been so privileged to have the opportunity to study under both of these talented and knowledgeable musicians. Eric’s technical approach was such a perfect start for our analytical teenager’s brain. He was able to introduce concepts and demonstrate different ways they could be applied as his skills developed, particularly with different genres. What a great way to motivate! Then, just when we thought that was great, along comes Meshem with an entirely different approach that has absolutely rocked our guy’s world! His fun, play from the heart and soul approach is just flat addictive! Our guy can’t wait to get at his drums each day to see what he can come up with, just so he can share and refine it at his next lesson. I’m already seeing the confidence skyrocket, and again, much because of the amazing CSM staff. As for mom here, Cascade School of Music is one of my absolute favorite places to go each week. As soon as I walk through the doors, the energy there absolutely fills my soul. Walking down the halls, I can’t help but smile at all the beautiful sounds coming from all the rooms, from classical to rock and from pop to opera. It all sounds heavenly and soothes a tired mom’s jangled nerves from the day. Thank you so much for enriching our family’s lives and filling our house with beautiful music. We are forever grateful to you and all the amazing staff at CSM.” —Rachel and Wayne Powderly
