From the Head of School The first half of the 2011-12 school year has begun with myriad accomplishments and activities marking our progress toward another outstanding year. The fall semester proved to be fruitful with the successful implementation of a healthier dining plan, online access to classroom materials and grades, and an improved daily schedule in the Middle and Upper Divisions. Our Booster Club kicked off its inaugural year this fall with more than 300 members enjoying tailgating, reunion events and other spirit-raising functions. In the earliest decades of the school, the “Dad’s Club” provided similar support – it’s great to have resurrected that for our athletes and for our teams. Our celebration of the 65th anniversary of the founding of the School has given us many opportunities to celebrate all that makes Casady so special to all of us. “Decade Days” have provided monthly events to highlight what life was like throughout the history of the school. This year’s Homecoming celebration was bigger and more festive than ever before. Our first Homecoming float and parade required the unified effort of our entire school community. The Alumni Awards dinner celebrated the exceptional achievements of some of our finest graduates, while our first Legends of the Fall reception honored those coaches and athletes who left an indelible impression here at Casady through their hard work on the field. And through the Founders’ Memorial dedication, reunion parties and campus tours, the School buzzed with good memories and positive feelings. The anniversary activities have provided many opportunities to remember and recommit to the values that have defined us and continue to define us today, the values emblazoned on our crest: Fideliter et Fortiter – with faith and with courage. We have, for the past 65 years, been committed to providing the finest possible education in the Episcopal School tradition to ensure that our students are prepared for college and beyond and that they strive to make a difference. Our mission at Casady has always been and always will be strong. This year, we have taken on the challenge of refining our mission statement to meet the needs of our students today and our future. From curricular offerings to our commitment to daily chapel, from our hiring practices to our admissions process, from our college counseling services to the way we build our daily schedule, everything we do is through the lens of our mission. This ensures that we continue to strengthen and foster the foundational aspects of our School and to build the kind of community in which we, especially our students, are challenged and supported. As we move forward in the year, we have other exciting projects in the works and important milestones worth celebrating. In January we will retire a major portion of the debt the School incurred a decade ago. I am thrilled to announce that the bond that the School took on in 2001 for support of capital enhancements will be paid off January 3, 2012. During the Forward Focus Capital Campaign, we promised that we would not only work toward building our endowment and addressing capital needs across campus, but we also committed to becoming debt-free and moving the School toward a more solid financial foundation. We are making significant progress toward this important goal thanks to those who have provided the generous and much-needed support to ensure that we have been able to make good on our commitment to you and to our students. The School is committed to thoughtful and sustainable financial management; this includes balancing our budget, funding our deferred maintenance account to be able to address ongoing upkeep and repair work, developing an admissions strategy that will allow us to build a steady, predictable and sustainable growth in enrollment. Additionally, the Annual Fund has just reached 85 percent participation among our parents for the second time, a clear indication of our community’s belief in our School, and solidifying a growth trend that will lead the campaign toward the million dollar mark in the coming years. The work we’ve been doing over the past few years has put us on solid footing with a clear direction for continued growth and excellence. It’s a great time to be at Casady School. On our founders day, February 18th, we will host a Gala at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum to gather and break bread with one another as we look confidently into our future together. I hope you will all plan to join us to celebrate. Thank you for your continued support and belief in our School.
With sincere gratitude,
Christopher C. Bright Head of School
From the Bishop Dear Friends, As we celebrate the 65th Anniversary of Casady School, let us all take a moment to remember those who had the vision to make Casady what it is today. The founders, first faculty members, early classes and their parents were committed to establishing the best college preparatory school in Oklahoma City. Those who came before us offered their lives and their resources to make Casady School a reality. We have been blessed by the commitment and generosity of many who have been part of the Casady community over the past six and a half decades. Looking to the future it is now our privilege to continue the legacy. Please join me in thanking all who have contributed to the success of Casady and pledge our support to continuing to make Casady School a place where our students are prepared for the challenges of tomorrow. Faithfully,
The Rt. Rev Dr. Edward J. Konieczny Bishop of Oklahoma

A group of parents, faculty and administrators are hard at work raising funds for a renovation of the Lower Division’s Powell Building this summer. Exciting plans are in place to create a centralized and covered entrance, an open and welcoming lobby and resource room, and classroom environments that are fresher, cleaner and healthier for the Lower Division students and teachers. The Powell Building was built in the 1960s and has served many generations of Casady students. Countless hours of classroom instruction in important fundamentals such as reading, writing and math have occurred within its walls. The faculty and administrators of the Lower Division have done a tremendous job over the past decade putting in place a program rich with age-appropriate curricula with a proven track record of success. “Anne France and her faculty have developed a program in the Lower Division that is very strong and helps our students gain a strong foundation that prepares them to enter the Middle Division and lays the groundwork for academic success,” said Chris Bright, Head of School. “Now we want to provide this division with some renovations that will help the appearance and everyday feel of the building better match the caliber of the education happening inside.” The main entrance to Powell will move from the north end of the building to the center, with a canopy that will provide weather protection for students during drop off and pick up. The entryway also will feature a double-door system and an open feeling with the administrative offices and a lobby to the left and an open resource room with floor to ceiling windows adjacent to the entrance and lobby area. “The resource room currently is used quite a bit for a variety of purposes,” said Mrs. France, Director of the Lower Division. “We are excited that the new room will now bring lots of natural light into the center of our building and will allow for access to the outdoors and a view of the lake.” Outside the resource room will be a covered back patio area. Classes can use this space for project work or lunchtime. A garden area will be adjacent to the patio and will be incorporated into the science curriculum as well as the food service program. The main enhancements that students will experience on a daily basis will occur in the classrooms. New lighting, flooring and ceiling tiles will be installed in every classroom and throughout the building. New HVAC systems and ductwork will be installed where needed throughout the building. The classrooms will receive a fresh coat of paint and new furniture and area rugs. All of these renovations will create an enhanced daily environment for students.
These plans were developed with input from the Lower Division faculty as well as the administration and the Board’s Plant Committee. The total cost of the renovations is $825,000 and already more than two-thirds of the funds have been raised. A group of Primary and Lower Division parents have been enlisted to spread awareness of the project and help raise the additional funds. While several larger gifts are needed to meet the goal for the project, this campaign has been designed to involve every family who wants to be a part of bringing these renovations to the Lower Division. Gifts of all sizes are welcomed and needed. In order for construction to commence on the day after school lets out in May, funds need to be committed by the end of February and all cash in hand for the project by the end of April. Casady’s Board of Trustees requires that 100 percent of the funds needed for a project are raised and in hand prior to construction. If you would like to know more about this project, or would like to support the renovations with a gift, please contact Laura Lang, Director of Institutional Advancement, at 405-749-3186 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Casady’s Master Campus Plan for Capital Projects
Casady has an exciting and well thought-out Master Plan that was developed by the Board of Trustees and its Plant Committee, along with key administrators, several years ago. This plan was the basis of the Forward Focus capital campaign that launched in 2007 and raised approximately $45 million for campus improvements. The first structure to be built within the plan and with campaign funds was the W. R. Johnston Math Building, completed in October 2010. The expansion of the Chapel of St. Edward the Confessor was not part of the master plan, but a donor was inspired by the vision of the School’s founders to expand the Chapel and that gift, along with major support from the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma made the beautiful enhancements possible this past spring. The next projects from the Master Plan in the queue are a brand new science and art facility, which will enable Casady’s Upper Division science program to have up-to-date and sufficient space for its science classes, and will also house the Visual Arts program within the same building. This will allow the arts program to also have ample space for its growing program and will provide for some unique and complementary cross-curricular project work to occur. Approximately $5.8 million has been raised for the science and art facility, with $2.5 million left to raise toward the $8.3 million cost. Following the completion of the science and art building, a renovation and expansion of the Fee/Ford/Harper arts complex is planned. Casady’s fine arts program is known in the area for its excellence and has been growing consistently over the past several years. Additional space for the program is being created by moving the choral music program to the Chapel, and the visual arts program to the science and arts building, which will provide for adequate space for the performing arts and instrumental music programs within the existing arts complex. This space is in need of repair and updating, and a $3.5 million renovation and expansion is planned. Finally, following these enhancements to Casady’s Upper Division campus, a brand new facility for Lower Division is in the Master Campus Plan. This new building is scheduled for construction 10 years from now at an approximate cost of $8-9 million. Casady’s administrators and the Lower Division faculty decided that 10 years was too long to wait for any updates or enhancements to the Powell Building, so the current plan to renovate and provide an enhanced environment for students was developed as a creative interim solution. Other plans envisioned well into the future include a new administrative and admissions facility, upgrades to athletic fields, a widened road through the campus and an enhanced entrance at Pennsylvania Avenue.
“This class is interesting and relatable to real life. Rachel Nolting, Senior
Mr. Carl Hinote leads students in observing a mock crime scene.
There is nothing glamorous about a crime scene. Yet, with the launching of mainstream television shows like CSI and Bones that center heavily on analyzing crime scenes, an increased general awareness and interest in the field of forensics can be observed in today’s society - particularly among high school students. As such, Casady School launched its first forensics class this year as an elective for Upper Division juniors and seniors. The students explore the field by microscopically examining fingerprints, hair follicles, DNA, various fibers and staged crime scenes, while preparing for college-level curriculum. Rachel Nolting, a Casady senior and CSI fan, said she enjoys how relevant the class has been. “This class is interesting and relatable to real life,” Nolting said. ”I like that the class is hands-on and gives us an insider’s perspective.” Carl Hinote, new to Casady this year, teaches the class, in addition to Introduction to Physics and Chemistry, and brings with him an extensive science background and an enthusiasm that transfers to the students. “It’s nice to know that my class is among one of the favorites,” Mr. Hinote said. “I’ve had an extremely positive response from our students. I even hear from other teachers how much the students anticipate coming to my class.” Senior Austin McCrimmon is one of those students who look forward to the forensics class. Though he plans to study economics in college, CSI sparked his interest in forensics, too, and he has enjoyed learning how criminal cases are actually solved. “I like learning about the law and crime and how it works together,” McCrimmon said. “It’s really cool to watch a criminal case on television and know how it was solved and know everything that happened behind the scenes.” Mr. Hinote shared that more universities across the country are now establishing forensics studies programs because of a heightened interest in the field. In Oklahoma, students can further their studies in forensics at institutions like the University of Central Oklahoma, which has a Forensic Science Institute, and Oklahoma State University. “Our students learn about various issues in forensics, like due process as it pertains to criminal cases, drugs, alcohol, and toxicology,” Mr. Hinote said. “This subject matter helps them to stay competitive since forensics isn’t offered at many high schools and it gives them insight as to what they might expect to study in a college-level forensics class.”
Mr. Hinote also incorporates the use of technology as much as possible. Each student conducts classroom assignments on a netbook and sometimes iPhones are used to capture photos of microscopic images. They also utilize Dropbox, a free webbased hosting service that allows Mr. Hinote and his students to share assignments and notes in class. Austin McCrimmon is grateful for the use of that technology. “Dropbox helps us to expedite our work,” he said. “It’s also a good way for us to stay organized. We can access our work from any computer and we don’t have to worry about just shoving a bunch of papers in a binder.”
“I like learning about the law and crime and how it works together.”-Austin McCrimmon, Senior
Upper Division Director Peter Huestis echoes those same sentiments. “We are so fortunate to have Carl Hinote working with our Intro to Physics and Chemistry classes as well as introducing Forensics at Casady,” Mr. Huestis said. “He has brought a new energy and passion for his craft to our community and incorporates relevance and engagement into his lesson plans through the use of technology.” Mr. Hinote said he is more than pleased with the way his first year of teaching forensics at Casady has progressed. The enthusiasm of his students has already prompted him to think of new ways he could enhance their learning experience and take his class from good to great. “Teaching this class has been wonderful and I only see it getting better,” Mr. Hinote said. “The sky is the limit, especially if we can acquire our own class set of microscopes and stereoscopes, upgrade to laptops or desktops and utilize more virtual software and virtual labs. We have some of the sharpest students in the state of Oklahoma right here at Casady School. I want them to reach their fullest potential as they delve into the complex and interesting realm of forensics.”
Josh Bottomly, Director of College Counseling and Lisa Clay, Casady’s newest counselor
One of Casady’s unique strengths is its College Counseling program. Equipped with a staff knowledgeable of the world’s best universities, a plan can be tailored to an individual student’s interests and aspirations to ensure they identify the best college fit. The College admissions process begins in earnest in the 11th grade, but steps can be taken as early as 9th grade to ensure the best chances of admission to a college of choice. Our counselors offer the following tips students in the Upper Division.
What CollegeBound JUNIORS Should Be Doing • Read the College Bound Cyclone Field Guide cover‐to‐cover (linked on College Counselor web page) in preparation for College Seminar sessions. • Attend Junior College Night on Wednesday, January 25th. • Attend and complete all assignments during the six College Seminar sessions. • Fill out Junior Questionnaire (one survey for student; one survey for parent) on Naviance. • Make an appointment for a student‐parent‐college counselor meeting in the winter/spring (after submitting the surveys). • Take at least one round of both the ACT and SAT I in the winter/spring. Recommend two rounds of tests that best suits your student. • Check with highly selective schools to identify how many SAT II Subject Tests are “recommended” or “required.” • Plan to take 2‐3 SAT II Subject Tests on June 2 test date. • Make plans for college visits in the spring, summer and fall. • Parents: Talk to a parent who has just been through the college process; ask for advice, insight, do’s/don’ts. Students do the same with current seniors. • Use the new “net price calculators” on college web sites to anticipate financial costs.
1. Begin mapping out your curriculum plan for all four years in the Upper School. 2. Aim for Breadth and Depth:
• Do the best you can in each academic class; these grades really matter.
four years in five core subjects, moving upward to the next level of rigor (English, math, science, history, and foreign language)[Selective colleges aren’t looking for passion on the transcript; they are looking for appropriate level of challenge + consistent performance) 3. Become involved in leadership roles in your activities; take advantage of leadership opportunities available to you. (“To whom much is given much is required”) 4. Work hard in all your courses. This will improve your ACT score. Read more. This will improve your PSAT and SAT scores. 5. Take the PSAT in October for experience with standardized testing and to evaluate your progress. For more tips, visit the College Counseling web page at www.casady.org.
• Identify two core academic teachers from this year who could write a recommendation on your behalf. • Keep an open mind to colleges/universities that you “may never have heard of before” that your college counselor may think is an excellent fit. • Keep the overarching philosophy in front of you: Think Best College Fit. • Senior Courses: Aim for breadth and depth in course selections. Recommend five core courses in the next level of rigor. • Pursue leadership opportunities in extracurricular activities. • Use summer to work, play and rest. Do at least one thing that you love.
Planning for College 9th and 10th Grade
• Return to school with a finalized college list that includes “Reach”, “Target”and “Likely” schools that are appropriate to your credentials (Rule of Thumb: “Eight is enough”).
Alley Cottrell ‘11
Texas Christian University Alley Cottrell has already seen the benefits of her independent, collegepreparatory education after taking her first college exam. Now a freshman at Texas Christian University, Alley texted her mother to share that, “all I have to say after taking that first test is Casady definitely prepared me for college.” Amy Cottrell, president of the Casady Parents’ Organization, said her daughter expressed that she was confident she had done well compared to several classmates who appeared apprehensive and uncertain. As a sorority pledge, Alley is required to attend study hall ten hours per week, but she told her mom that is “not enough.” So, she spends additional time preparing for classes and meeting with study groups. Besides academics, Alley is involved with several on-campus activities and intramural athletics. “Thank you, Casady, for imparting the discipline, organizational and study skills necessary to excel in college,” Amy Cottrell said.
Matthew Silver ‘10 University of Oklahoma
Matthew Silver served in various capacities at Casady, while staying on top of his studies. According to Matthew, his experiences in basketball, the “C” Club and as sports editor for “The Crier” helped him to build the necessary skills to successfully manage his time in college. “The knowledge base that I already had from attending Casady is beyond what college even teaches you in the first semester, the first year. I feel so much better prepared for my (college) classes and planning for them than what many of my classmates have said that they were prepared for. For example, time management for me is much easier than for other people I have met, and the material in the classes – I was already a semester ahead for my calculus and math classes – is a lot of what I have seen already at Casady.”
Elizabeth Brindley ‘11 St. Olaf University
Elizabeth Brindley has seen great success since graduating from Casady last June. The President’s Committee on the Arts & Humanities recently selected her photograph, “Mirrored Image” as one of 44 pieces of student art to display in a national exhibit in Washington, D.C. The honor also came with recognition in historic Carnegie Hall. Elizabeth Brindley says Casady played a major role in her current success. “One of the main things is that the teachers are so incredible, they can’t be replaced. The amount of work was hard at the time, but it was so worth it, because I am prepared and I can keep up in college. At Casady, they really teach you to follow what you love. I would say that it is a great place. At the end of my fours year there, when I look back, I can’t imagine having gone anywhere else.”
It’s no secret that anyone who sends their children to Casady School desires to see them reach their fullest potentialacademically, physically and spiritually. This hope leads parents to encourage the development of a well rounded individual by providing a schedule rich with extra-curricular activities and academic challenges. During a recent showing of a documentary at Casady, entitled Race to Nowhere, parents were challenged to review those schedules and determine whether they promote wholeness and balance or are excessive and cause undue pressure. Kim O’Connor, a Casady parent and a coordinator of the event, said the issues presented in the documentary were salient to parents across the country. “The world we live in today is moving much faster, and a lot of us have bought into the idea that our children have to be involved in a wide range of activities for them to experience the best opportunities in life,” Mrs. O’Connor said. “This documentary brings to light that the demands of these opportunities can sometimes create a stressed child.” Head of School Chris Bright said the documentary presents a great topic for discussion in which many parents, educators and students should engage. “As a parent and the Head of School for Casady, I am always concerned about whether we are empowering our children to be successful,” Mr. Bright said. “I think it is important that we periodically reevaluate the daily activities of our children’s lives to ensure that we promote good health and balance. That is certainly a top priority here at Casady. We want our students to be happy and we want them to develop habits that will help them in the future.” Casady School recently made some positive schedule changes in the Primary and Upper Divisions to promote such a balance. By reducing the number of daily transitions, Primary students now enjoy a smoother flow in the day, while Upper Division students now benefit from break times that have been rearranged to allow time for reflection in between classes. The documentary also encourages parents to be mindful of the way they communicate with their children. Some conversations can create stress and leave the child feeling pressured and frustrated. Instead, work to foster an environment that encourages open dialogue with students. “I think this documentary drives home so many good points,” Mrs. O’Connor said. “There are many characters in this documentary that several of us can relate to, because at the end of the day, we all want the same thing: happy, healthy children who have the tools they need to succeed in life.” For more information on this documentary, visit www.racetonowhere.com.

“A person is never too young to make a difference” is just one of the many messages a group of Casady students is sharing with the world. Several students who are a part of an initiative called Sow Love Zambia are working for the second time to raise thousands of dollars to build a school for orphans in Lusaka, Zambia. “We are helping kids get an education and hopefully, rise above poverty,” Casady senior Emily Ellis said. “With this school, we are able to give them hope and a future.” The journey began when the students took a mission trip in the summer of 2010 to Lusaka a region ridden with AIDS and with one of the highest per capita orphan rates in the world. Greatly burdened by the conditions, the students felt compelled to become advocates for Zambian children. They then spearheaded Sow Love Zambia, which centered on raising $74,000 to launch a project most of the orphans deeply desired: the construction of a school. After eight months, the Sow Love Zambia team met their financial goal by selling t-shirts, offering a Christmas gift-wrapping and delivery service, coordinating an ultimate Frisbee tournament and organizing a giant garage sale. Soon after, they returned to Zambia in the summer of 2011 for a dedication ceremony and the opening of a new school that now serves about 150 students.
Now, they are at it again. This time they want to raise $61,000 by the spring of 2012 to renovate a building in the same region that will serve about 300 children, grades 1-7. The school will be located in a town called Garden, though ironically, it sits in the middle of the slums. Some members of the team plan to return to Zambia in the summer of 2012 for the opening of the new school, if they meet their goal. They have already offered another gift-wrapping service for this holiday season and plan to launch other fundraisers in the near future. “These students truly embody the spirit of a Casady student,” Head of School Chris Bright said. “Their work is highly commendable and it reflects an extraordinary level of compassion that we try to instill in each of our students here at Casady. We are very proud of them and hope that they will continue in their efforts to facilitate positive societal change.” The Oklahoma City Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals recently presented the team with the “2011 Outstanding Youth Making a Difference Award” during a luncheon hosted at the Skirvin Hotel. But, they “aren’t doing this for the public recognition or to pad their
portfolios,” according to Casady senior Laura Joullian. “Our main focus is to bring glory to God,” Joullian said. “This is an opportunity to impact lives and a good way to share the Gospel with both Zambians and Americans.” Casady senior Madison Utz said this initiative has been a lifechanging experience. “I went to Zambia on a mission trip and fell in love with the orphans,” she said. “I love their spirit and their willingness to listen and all the love they showed me. Honestly, the first time we went, I was skeptical and overwhelmed, because I hadn’t really developed my relationship with God and I was nervous about teaching Christ. But, while I was there, God opened my eyes to His overwhelming presence and His ability to control a situation. Things have been different ever since.” Todd Utz, a Casady parent who serves in an advisory position for the Sow Love Zambia team, along with his wife Jill, a Casady Trustee, said they couldn’t be more proud of the dedication and commitment the students have shown in this endeavor. The Utz family began taking mission trips to Zambia about four years ago. “We wanted to take our kids to Zambia to show them what is going on in the world,” Mr. Utz said. “There is so much devastation that it’s easy to wonder how you can help. But, we wanted them to see that even if we just helped one child, it would bring glory to God.” In addition to sharing her faith, Emily Ellis said she is hoping to leave a lasting legacy at Casady. “We have sisters in the eighth grade who we hope will continue this tradition. Already, fifth-graders are selling cookies and busing tables to be a part of this project. It’s the sweetest thing and I hope it will continue for years to come.” Other members of the Sow Love Zambia team include: Katie Cunningham, Caroline Blakley, Elizabeth Nordin, Molly Brown, Sydney Hood, Chandler Helms, Nicole Lardner, Katie Bennett, Rachel Nolting, Aubrey Webb, Hilary Hamm, Emily Cox, Molly Marso and Sara Roush.

The Chapel of St. Edward the Confessor received 22 new themed stained-glass windows and 10 grisaille windows in the east and west transepts, the south vestibule and the bell tower. Judson Studios, a fifth-generation stained-glass and fine arts firm in Los Angeles, created the original windows in the nave of the Chapel and were commissioned to create the new windows. Individual donors have underwritten all of the themed windows, which were carefully planned by The Rt. Rev. Dr. Edward Konieczny, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma, to depict themes rich with Biblical context particularly meaningful to Casady School. Bob Bowles ’54, Rowland Denman ’54 and Marilyn Mee Meade ‘56 have been the leaders in establishing a Founders’ Memorial garden where alumni, parents, students and the community can enjoy the peace and tranquility of the campus while reflecting on the roots and foundation of Casady School. After several years of planning, discussion and fundraising amongst early alumni, the Founders’ Memorial has been completed and was dedicated during Homecoming. This memorial includes four stained-glass windows on the north side of the east transept of the Chapel facing the lake and additionally includes a monument with plaques commemorating the founders’ tireless dedication to Casady. The garden and windows were given through the generosity of many early alumni and represent the founding of the School in the Episcopal faith. The Alumni Association also gave a gift for a stained glass window, which is on the second level above the founders’ windows in the east transept. The theme of the stained glass window is the parable The Feeding of the 5,000, representing the thousands of Casady alumni who have fed their mind, body and spirit at Casady.

In our 65-year history, Casady has a rich tradition of providing exceptional educators and staff, many of whom have spent a lifetime in education, made a significant impact on our students and then retired; thus becoming “emeriti,” a Latin term for someone who has earned “merit” during tenure. This year, the Casady community has mourned the loss of four emeriti.
Genevieve “Dady” Mueller Nov. 6, 1930 - April 4, 2011 22 years at Casady
Mrs. Mueller joined Casady under Headmaster Dr. Robert B. Woolsey in 1978 and served as an English, German and Bible teacher. At Casady, she shaped the young minds of thousands of students with her unwaveringly high expectations. Mrs. Mueller graduated from Duke University in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts in German. She had four children: Lee Linn ’74, Dale Smith, John ’79 and Eve Henson ’84. Her granddaughter Jessica Linn is also a Casady alum graduating in 2004.
Oct. 14, 1924 - June 19, 2011 36 years at Casady Chairman of the Science Department at the time he retired in 1987, Mr. Marble shaped the lives of many students. Teaching was his passion, and he was known to say “I don’t teach chemistry; I teach kids; I just happen to use chemistry as a way to teach kids.” Mr. Marble held the Nell A. Sutton Master Teaching Chair and was awarded the Mike Monroney Fellowship in 1982. Anne, his wife of over 50 years, preceded him in death in October 2009. The Marbles had two sons, Christopher ’73 and David ’76.
Faculty Legacy Fund To celebrate the years of service provided and countless student lives touched by retiring or deceased faculty members, and to enable individuals to honor teachers that meant a great deal to them, the School has established the Faculty Legacy Endowment Fund. This endowment fund will support faculty salaries. Individuals wishing to make a gift to honor a faculty member can do so by sending a check to Casady School with a note designating the gift to the Faculty Legacy Endowment Fund and the teacher they wish to honor with their gift. This fund will be available for many years to come for anyone who wants to contribute in the name of any of Casady’s current, retired or deceased faculty. Our faculty have left a legacy of extraordinary support and excellence at Casady, and this fund will create a legacy in their honor that will continue to support other faculty members for years to come. Gifts can also be made to Casady’s general Memorial Fund in honor or memory of a friend, family member or faculty member by making a traditional honor or memorial gift. A gift to the Memorial Fund can be made in much the same way as to the Faculty Legacy Fund, but should be marked with “Memorial” or “Tribute” in the memo line.

She taught in the Primary Division at Casady for 35 years and received the Geneva Hood award in 1991. At the time of her death, Mrs. Pape was the Director of Montessori Teacher Education Program at Oklahoma City University and was a 2011 finalist for the American Montessori Society Living Legend Award. Her husband preceded her in death, and she leaves behind her children, William R. Pape ’68, Sarah Pape Hester ’72 and Susan Pape Peacock.
Casady’s Celebration of Alumni Banquet on Oct. 13 kicked off a host of special events that welcomed alumni to campus during homecoming week. Traditionally, the Casady Alumni Association’s annual dinner and tribute to Alumni Awards honorees recognizes outstanding alumni who have succeeded both professionally and personally. The School’s Golden Cyclones, our distinguished group of alumni who graduated 50 years ago or more, are also a part of the celebration. “When I graduated in the pouring rain in 1978, I really didn’t know what the future held for me, but I do know this. That my fellow graduates and I were as well-prepared for college as any school could ever do for us, as well as for life, and we are all better prepared for having attended Casady School,” said Alumni Board President Kathleen Roberts Stevenson ’78. Each year, alumni awards honorees are selected during a nomination process by the Casady Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, and this year, the group named three graduates for Alumni Achievement, a Young Alumni Achievement honoree and a Distinguished Graduate to receive awards. The archives volunteers were presented with a Casady Service Award, a designation created in 2009 to recognize individual who have shown continued dedication to Casady School. “The words that I hear from alumni always embody the spirit of this School from the foundation – with faith and with courage – from the Latin words that are on our crest – Fideliter et Fortiter. Our Casady alumni make a difference in the world, and every time we gather together for this Alumni Awards Banquet, I’m reminded of the decades and years and countless minutes that we have all spent as a part of the Casady community and as a part of its history,” said Head of School Chris Bright. “I am so thankful for your hearts, your faith and your courage in how you’ve lived your lives as a graduate of Casady.”

Banker, investor and entrepreneur, G. Jeffrey Records Jr., received Casady’s highest honor bestowed on an alum, the Distinguished Graduate Award. This award is presented annually to a Casady graduate who has demonstrated loyalty to the School; renders service to the community; excels professionally; and achieves recognition on a local, state, national or international level. “It has been an honor to maintain my affiliation with Casady all these years”, Jeff said. “Casady is a family. It’s a family of teachers, parents, administrators, coaches and the student body itself. Each makes a significant contribution to the learning experience by sharing ideas and perspectives, and establishing high standards. Through that rigorous community experience comes continuous personal development. And,

it was the trajectory of that development that provided me the opportunity for success in college and after. I am grateful that through giving I am able to show my appreciation to Casady for the opportunities it has provided me, like so many other graduates have happily demonstrated for 65 years.” Jeff is chairman and chief executive officer of MidFirst Bank, Oklahoma City’s largest bank; is a part owner of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Hotel ZaZa in Dallas and Houston; and is involved in other ventures both nationally and internationally. Jeff is a member of Casady’s Board of Trustees. His father, George J. Records ’52 was named Casady’s Distinguished Graduate in 1988.
Alumni Achievement Judith Cheek Hays, R.N., Ph.D. ’66 Associate Professor Emerita, School of Nursing Duke University
Judith Cheek Hays has devoted her professional life to gerontological research, nursing education and scientific writing. At Duke University, she is a Senior Fellow in the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development and member of the Department of Psychiatry and School of Nursing faculties. She has also served as the division chair of the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. “Judy has what Casady fosters and that is a keen intellect and compassion,” said Judy’s brother, Tim Cheek ’77, who introduced her. Judy’s research is widely published in journals related to death, dying, bereavement and widowhood; affective disorders in late life; living arrangements and residential changes in late life; and religion and health in late life. Since 2004, she has served as editor of the journal Public Health Nursing and on the publications board of the American Public Health Association. Her volunteer service has included chair of Durham’s non-profit, independent fair trade retail store, One World Market, and president of the congregation at Duke Chapel, where she serves as healthcare liaison for Montagnard refugee families. “I’m very grateful to Casady where I learned the lessons that have withstood the test of time. Daily chapel and the Episcopal hymnal taught me to wait and watch for direction that would come from a realm invisible to the human eye. Mrs. (Edwin) Porch taught us that we were part of a larger community and to act accordingly,” said Judy. “It seems like every adult around Casady was always teaching us how to write. From Mrs. Lacey who drilled us on diagramming sentences in the sixth grade to Mrs. (Margaret) Tuck who taught us to write in English; Mr. (Arlen) Gill who taught us to write in French and Dr. (Robert) Woolsey who taught us how language was constructed in Latin, a language that nobody even wrote in anymore,” she said. After graduating from Casady, Judy earned a bachelor of arts in English literature from Wellesley College in Massachusetts. Her scientific and clinical training includes a Ph.D. in chronic disease epidemiology and aging from Yale University School of Medicine, a master of science in nursing from the Yale School of Nursing, and a bachelor of science in nursing from Emory University in Atlanta.
Alumni Achievement Professor Richard B. Hays ’66
George Washington Ivey Professor of New Testament and Dean of the Divinity School Duke University
Richard B. (Chip) Hays is an internationally recognized scholar whose work has focused on the letters of the Apostle Paul and on New Testament ethics. His work has bridged the disciplines of biblical criticism and literary studies, exploring the innovative ways in which early Christian writers interpreted Israel’s Scripture. His book, The Moral Vision of the New Testament: Community, Cross, New Creation, was selected by Christianity Today as one of the 100 most important religious books of the 20th century. Richard has written a number of other influential books and has lectured in North America, Europe, Israel, Australia and New Zealand. “I’m grateful for tough teachers like Mrs. (Margaret) Tuck and Mr. (Earl) Hiller who did not suffer fools gladly and would not tolerate sloppiness of any kind. They taught me that precision matters in language or in mathematics and that it is possible to turn in a book report with no errors of spelling or punctuation. More, they taught me that there is a direct correlation between disciplined attention to detail and the formation of character,” said Richard. Richard spent his undergraduate work at Yale University where he majored in English literature. He earned a Ph.D. at Emory University in Atlanta and a Master of Divinity degree at Yale Divinity School, where he served on the faculty until he joined the Duke faculty in 1991. He was appointed to the Deanship of Duke Divinity School in 2010. An ordained United Methodist minister, he has preached in settings ranging from rural Oklahoma churches to Westminster Abbey. In 2009, he received an honorary doctorate from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany.
Alumni Achievement R. Todd Currie ‘93
Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Operations Perimeter Technology Following the dot com bust in 2002, Todd Currie partnered with two former co-workers to form a new IT services company. This group of founders brought on four additional partners and acquired a former Williams Communications data center in March 2003, and began Perimeter Technology Center, which has grown into Oklahoma’s largest commercial data center provider. Perimeter purchased a former Genuity data center facility in Tulsa in 2004 and in 2008, built a state-of-the-art facility on a 15-acre campus in Oklahoma City. “The experiences and challenges I received as a student at Casady have given me the confidence to take chances and succeed at almost everything I’ve tried,” Todd said. “The education that I received at Casady gave me the foundation that I needed to be able to succeed. The support that I have received from the Casady family has been instrumental in everything that I’ve done; whether it was investors, customers, vendors or mentors, there have always been resources that I knew that I could count on with ties to Casady. I developed many lifelong friendships in the time that I spent here that I leaned on heavily as I was growing up and still do today. Perimeter was recently sold to Cequel Data Centers out of St. Louis. Todd will continue to serve as Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Operations for Perimeter. Todd is a past member of the Casady Alumni Board and is currently involved in the Oklahoma City Festival of the Arts, Afcom and Rebuilding Together. Todd has previously worked with a number of non-profit organizations and events.
Young Alumni Achievement S. Chandler Sims II ’99 Captain U.S. Marine Corps
Chandler Sims was honored with the Young Alumni Achievement award, which recognizes a Casady graduate from the last 15 years who renders service to his university or community, and excels in a profession or pursuit of education. “All of this is possible because of the foundation that was cemented on these 80.8 acres here at Casady,” Chandler said. “The academics were constantly challenging. The curriculum coupled with an all-world faculty here at Casady has enabled me to do so much that would have otherwise not been possible. Although it wasn’t all academics all the time, I was fortunate to be afforded the opportunity to have spiritual balance that daily Chapel’s provided. From senior speeches to daily sermons by Fr. (Max) Berry and Fr. (John) Marlin, Chapel offered time for spiritual reflection. There were athletics, football in particular, which has taught me probably more about the intricacies of leadership.” Chandler was a student athlete at Casady and went on to play football at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, where he earned a bachelor of science in economics. He then joined the United States Marine Corp, where he completed advanced helicopter training and received his wings in 2006 and was promoted in August 2007 to his present rank of Captain. He performed two tours in Iraq where he flew combat missions, and in June, Chandler reported to Quantico, VA, where he is assigned to Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) and serves as squadron pilot supporting the President of the United States. The Marine One squadron is responsible for the transportation of the president, the vice president, members of the presidential cabinet and other dignitaries. “Chandler is a shining example for all of us and someone that I look up to now,” said Chad Reynolds ’95 in his introduction of Chandler. “His work ethic; his ambition; his strong sense of duty and faith; his dedication to excellence; they’re all wonderful expressions of the Casady spirit.” Chandler’s awards include Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medals, Humanitarian Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Iraq Service Campaign Medal. Chandler has spent two tours of duty in Iraq.

Utz A. Max Weitzenhoffer ‘57 This Annual Report was produced by the Casady School Advancement Office in conjunction with the Office of Finance and Operations and details gifts received from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011. If your contribution was received after June 30, your name will appear in the next Annual Report. We have made every effort to be as accurate as possible in compiling our lists and donors. If your name has been listed incorrectly or omitted, or if you prefer to be listed in a different format, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at (405) 749-3186 and accept our sincerest apologies. Casady School admits students of any race, color, religion, creed, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available at the School. The School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, national and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, financial aid and loan programs, at athletic and other school-administered programs.
From the Chairman of the Board It is times like these when presenting the Chairman’s Report is an easy task. To describe the changes that have occurred on Casady’s campus in the last few years as a Renaissance is by no means hyperbole. Whether you are standing on the back steps of the Middle Division in the evening looking over the lake at the illuminated expansion of St. Edward’s Chapel, walking through the halls of the open and naturally-lit Johnston Math Building, dining on Greek Chicken and fresh steamed vegetables in the Sage Dining Serviceoperated Calvert Hall or checking online for the academic progress your child is making with his or her outstanding teachers, the myriad changes are simply incredible. In addition to these tangible improvements to an already incredible institution, there is a palpable sense on campus that things are going in the right direction and gaining momentum. So many have contributed to this positive momentum and you each deserve our thanks. Coming through once again to provide support for this Renaissance on campus was the Casady community with its continued generous giving to the Annual Fund. As you may be aware, tuition income only covers 80 percent of the true cost of an education at Casady. The Annual Fund subsidizes the tuition income so the School can maintain the programs which make the Casady experience so unique and meaningful. During the 2010-11 Annual Fund, Casady’s faculty, staff, parents, alumni, students and friends reaffirmed their commitment to the School by contributing $884,754. And once again, our faculty and staff showed their dedication to the School by giving 100 percent participation to this Annual Fund, as did our Trustees. In addition to the continued success of the Annual Fund, the administration has instituted sound and workable fiscal policies and procedures which now enable the School to operate on a balanced budget. And, by the end of this year, the Board and the administration will fulfill another of the promises made in the Forward Focus: Campaign for Casady capital campaign and pay off the remaining $1,385,000 of the 2001 bond financing debt. Once this 2001 debt has been paid, the School’s remaining long-term debt should be retired by June 30, 2013. Thus, when this year’s 11th graders graduate, Casady will not have any long-term debt. Having our financial house in order has enabled the School to strengthen its exceptional programs, and paying off all of our long-term debt will allow the School to better plan for our future. Another group responsible for reinvigorating the spirit on campus this year has been the newly formed Cyclone Booster Club. In the early years of the School, there was a Dad’s Club that helped support the athletic programs on campus. But over the years participation in the Dad’s Club faded, and for the last three decades the School has been without an organized group specifically dedicated to supporting our athletics programs. This year, Athletic Director Steve Shelly and a dedicated group of moms, dads and alums organized the Cyclone Booster Club. Through the efforts of its Executive Committee members Mike Ellis ’83, Mark Bennett ’83, David Bozalis ’84, Matt Thompson ’88, Andy Sullivan ’94 and Taylor Currie ’91, and several other early organizers, the Cyclone Booster Club has grown to nearly 300 members in a few short months and raised nearly $50,000. These funds
will be used to support all of our athletics programs and provide a number of items on the athletic department’s wish list. The Booster Club has helped to breathe more fresh air into our athletics programs and has given an added boost of spirit on campus. No great institution can plan its future without looking back at where it has been, and Casady is no exception to this rule. Through the great efforts of Elizabeth Anthony ’96 and David Sapper ’74, Co-Chairs of the Alumni Association’s Legacy Committee and Betty Jane Garrett ’86, Director of Alumni Relations, the School is steadily building a cataloged and well-preserved Archive of Casady’s history. Whether you are walking on campus today or thumbing through the materials in the Archives, it is easy to see what has made our School such a wonderful part of our community for sixty-five years. As Casady marks its 65th Anniversary, what better way to celebrate the rich history, traditions and standards of excellence that have marked each and every year since the School’s founding in 1947 than to have a year-long celebration. Coordinating the 65th Anniversary efforts are Kathy ‘80 and Hal Brown and Casey and Rainey ‘78 Williams, who, working with faculty, staff and a host of volunteers, have come up with numerous events, celebrations and tributes to every facet of Casady life that will span the entire school year. The Anniversary Celebration has and will continue to provide opportunities for involvement to alumni, current parents, students, parents of alumni, grandparents and others. The celebrations culminate with the Anniversary Gala on Saturday, February 18, 2012, at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The evening will certainly be a wonderful celebration of the School’s history and a showcase of the Renaissance on campus. The European Renaissance lasted three centuries and required the efforts of hundreds of artists, scientists, mathematicians, philosophers and scholars to build an intellectual and cultural bridge to the Modern Ages. Similarly, for Casady, it has required the efforts of many to take this wonderful institution through the recent evolutions in modern education to become a 21st century educational institution, yet maintain the history and tradition that has made Casady such a wonderful place to educate our children. Our work is not complete and much effort lies ahead. However, the improvements and evolutions we have witnessed in the last few years illustrate clearly that we are on the right path. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to give my heartfelt thanks to all those who have contributed to making Casady even better than it has been. Your commitment, dedication and support have helped the School achieve so much and position itself for further successes in the future. Thank you for your continued support and your investment in the future and living legacy of Casady School. Best Regards, Eric S. Fisher, Sr. ’84 Chairman of the Board
From the Director of Institutional Advancement It has been an honor over the past year to serve the advancement efforts of this School, chiefly because I get to talk to and hear from so many who dearly love this School. Having the opportunity to match an alumnus’ or parent’s, even grandparent’s interests and passions on campus with a program or opportunity that benefits our students truly is a privilege. I am reminded on a daily basis that the ground upon which I walk, the hallways through which I pass, contain a rich history and hold great significance to those who have spent so many days and years of their lives on our campus over the last 65 years. Deep, forever friendships were born here. Sparks of enlightenment were ignited here. Intellects were honed and sharpened here. Creativity was fostered and nurtured here. Competitiveness and teamwork were intertwined here. Gifts that come across my desk and phone calls and emails I receive also are constant reminders of how dear our alumni and others hold this School to their hearts. Funds are being established and capital projects supported because they know that their success can be traced back to the person they were shaped at Casady School to become. Our current families have shown such an outpouring of support through our Annual Fund over the past year as well. With an increase from 44 percent parent participation (historically about our average) to an unprecedented 84 percent this last year, our parents provided a strong vote of confidence in the quality of education their children are receiving, the sense of community that is pervasive on our campus, and in the strategic direction the Head of School and the Board of Trustees are shaping for the future. Thank you for your support of this School and your belief that the lives of our students are forever changed here. I welcome your calls and emails. Please tell me what you love about this School and let me know how we can help you accomplish something that is important to you on campus or in our classrooms. Gratefully,

Casady Annual Fund – Alumni Percentage Giving to Annual Fund:
19% Class Participation Leaders for 2010-11:

When I graduated in the pouring rain in 1978, I never dreamed I would have the honor and the privilege of serving on the Casady Alumni Association Board, much less as its President during Casady’s 65th Anniversary celebration. This year the Alumni Association is continuing its efforts to re-connect with alumni while supporting the School we all love. We have already accomplished a great deal this year and have plans to continue to be highly visible on campus. After completing our pledge to the Casady Alumni Scholarship Fund in 200910, the board voted to be a part of the amazing completion of the original vision for the Chapel by donating a stained-glass window. We completed our pledge this summer, and “The Feeding of the 5,000” represents the thousands of students who have been fed in mind, body and spirit by Casady School. This window is appropriately located just above the four windows donated by our founding alumni classes and overlooking the Founders’ Memorial Garden outside the new east transept. We hope that all alumni, past, present and future, will be inspired by its beauty and message. The Alumni Association also has made a donation to the ongoing efforts of the Casady Archives. It started as a jumbled collection of deteriorating scrapbooks, photos, slides and memorabilia gathered from closets, cupboards and attics throughout the School. Through the efforts of key volunteers, the archives has found a home on campus in the upper story of the Casady Wing, and the hard but exciting work of identifying, cataloguing and preserving the School’s history continues. Archives volunteers also have begun to video tape oral histories with our earliest alumni, faculty and staff. The entire Casady community is invited to help in this vital project by lending your efforts on archive workdays throughout the year. Check the Casady calendar for days you can lend a hand. In celebration of Casady’s 65th Anniversary we will be sponsoring events for our alumni who live outside of Oklahoma City. Our first event in Dallas, co-sponsored by the 65th Anniversary Committee and the Cyclone Booster Club, and featuring Sprinkles cupcakes, allowed us to re-connect with our Dallas alumni. Be sure to check the Casady Alumni tab on the website for information on future events in other cities. We hope these celebrations will serve as seeds for future Casady ‘alumni chapters’ across the country. Also in celebration of the 65th Anniversary, the Casady Alumni Association has provided seed money for a challenge grant for the Annual Fund. We are proud that alumni giving to the Annual Fund grew 4 percent last year to 19 percent. If we can reach 20 percent in the 2011-12 campaign, just one tiny percentage point more, overall alumni giving will be matched with an additional $20,000! Our goal is participation, crucial to leveraging support from foundations and others, so no donation is too small. We urge you to log on to Casady’s web site or contact the alumni office to ‘Participate’ and ensure that the Casady experience we all enjoyed will continue to be all it can be for current and future students. But it hasn’t been all work and no play! This year, our fundraiser will once again be the Casady Golf Tournament. By no means an alumni-only event, we invite the entire Casady community to join us in the spring at the beautiful Quail Creek Golf & Country Club golf course for a round with friends in support of the Alumni Association. This tournament helps to ensure that the association will be able to continue to support the School. The golf tournament promises to be an even better event this year, with some surprises in store. In Casady’s 65th year, the Casady Alumni Association Board joins me in inviting and encouraging you to become involved! Just contact our Alumni Director, Betty Jane Garrett ’86 for information. We hope to see you soon!
Yours in Cyclone Spirit,
Kathleen Roberts Stevenson ’78 Alumni Association President
From the Casady Parents’ Organization The Casady Parents’ Organization had another banner year, which resulted in gifts in excess of $244,000 to Casady School, including gifts designated for each division of the school. The CPO works with the school administration to fund these gifts every year. The 2010-11 school year started with the Annual Back to School Picnic, which was chaired by Kaycee Nolting and Patty Coe. With the help of the Gales officers and varsity cheerleaders, everyone was treated to scoops of ice cream and welcomed back to school. November brought the much-anticipated Cirque du Cyclone Light the Night Auction. Libby Naifeh and Kristen Bohanon chaired this event, which was a smashing hit, from the beautiful decorations to the fabulous auction packages. The Annual Fat Tuesday Pancake Breakfast was another great event for Casady. Melissa Clements chaired the event with the help of Ban and Yen Nguyen and Bob Griffiths. They kept more than 300 people’s plates filled with pancakes. The Casady Cupboard, chaired by Kristen Dyson, had another outstanding year for CPO. Tonya Bell helped Kristen keep the cupboard stocked with much needed Casady t-shirts and sweat shirts as well as after school snacks. Bob Griffiths and Nat Hardt were busy chairing concessions and keeping up with the demand for drinks and food during sporting events for Casady patrons as well as visiting teams and their supporters. The Casady Cupboard and Concessions provide service year round and provide much needed funds for the CPO to continue to support the school. CPO wants to give a big thank you to all of the parents who volunteered throughout the year and to the 2010-11 CPO board members for their leadership. We hope you will continue to support the CPO and Casady School in the 2011-12 school year. Sincerely,
Lee Ann Nordin CPO President 2010-11

Casady School provides Annual Fund donors the opportunity to designate their gifts or to allow the administration to direct their gifts to the area of greatest need. This permits donors to match their philanthropic interests with the School’s budgetary needs.
Casady’s Annual Fund: Participate! The Annual Fund is the largest annual fundraiser for Casady School. Each year the Annual Fund raises funds to offset costs not covered by tuition and other income. In fact, tuition only covers about 80 percent of each student’s education at Casady, and the Annual Fund is an important part of making up the remaining balance. As a budgeted line item, it is important that our Annual Fund campaign reaches its goal each year! The 2010-11 campaign was a huge success, meeting and exceeding its goal of $775,000 with an impressive final total of $885,000. Not only was our financial goal met but participation by our alumni rose from 14 percent to 19 percent, and our parent participation grew to an impressive 84 percent from 44 percent in just one year! These successes were due, in part, to the strong example set by our Trustees, faculty and staff who, once again, participated at 100 percent! We thank all of our donors for their support and faith in our School! Looking ahead the Annual Fund Campaign is laying the foundation to further strengthen participation by all of Casady’s partners and raise the total goal to $1 million annually. We hope you will continue to support us by participating in our campaign and making our vision a reality.

Casady Endowments Endowment support is an important way that philanthropy supports the operations of Casady School and permanently honors the interests of donors at the same time. These funds have been given over many decades of the life of the School. Some are named to honor or memorialize the donors who love Casady and want to perpetuate their support of the School; others are named in honor of a beloved teacher or administrator. All of them provide annual distributions that will continue to support the School for many decades to come and help ensure that the Casady tradition of excellence continues.
