Douglas News News Douglas By Alvis M. Bond

We welcome Mrs. Elisabeth “Bo” Pope, Mr. William Pope, Mrs. Sarah Davis, Mrs. Michelle Reed, Mrs. Victoria Hooper and Mrs. Ella Washington to our facility and hope they enjoy their stay with us. Thank you volunteers for coming this week: Christ Temple ladies, First Holiness Women, First Assembly of God Church ladies, Holly Grove Baptist Church, United Pentecostal Church, Westside Church of Christ, Mrs. Mary Barkens, Mrs. Juanita Austin, Bingo ladies, Macedonia Baptist

Church and Mrs. Gennett Rogers. Our sympathy goes to the family of Mr. Jerome Trigg. Thank you to Westside Church of Christ members for coming on Monday night conducting gospel music and delivering snack crackers to each of our patients. Thank you to Mrs. Juanita Austin for volunteering her time and polishing our ladies nails in their rooms. Some of our ladies prefer to remain in their rooms, so Mrs. Austin visits them

and polishes these ladies nails. She decided last Wednesday would be her last day to volunteer. We certainly will miss her and truly appreciate all the months she has volunteered her services. We wish her the best at her future endeavors. Thought for the Week: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord makes his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” –Numbers 6:24 26

On Saturday evening, January 21, family, friends and associates gathered at the National Guard Armory to help Mrs. Almeda (Me Me) Cannon Luster celebrate her 50th birthday with plenty of good food, tributes in song and a slide presentation of her life growing up, her becoming a minister’s wife and all her life’s accomplishments. Everyone in attendance had a grand time! Sunday services at

Douglas Chapel CME Church were inspiring. Our visitors this week were: Ms. Mamie S. Brown, daughter Janice, granddaughter C.C. who is now a minister from Nashville, Irving Archibald from Chicago and the Bowles sisters from Jackson. Our sympathy this week goes to the family of Stella Terry, the Marcus Williams family and the Brown and Jarrett families. On our prayer and

“Never Forget” was the subject of the message. Some thing the Old Testament is insignificant, but it was given by God to lead us to Christ and to teach us how we should live. The first four of the 10 Commandments teaches us how we are to reverence and honor God; the last six are on how we are to relate to our fellowman. If everyone followed them, our lives would be in less turmoil. Prior to the message, Chris Veteto, the director of Birth Choice in Jackson, spoke to the church concerning their work. It’s been 39 years since it became legal to kill little babies, 53 million have lost their lives in that time. Every 25 seconds a baby dies. We need to be careful to vote for those who stand for life. Danny Simpson introduced his daughter Rita Alexander to bring the special music. Rita’s husband, Wayne Alexander and their family were there. At the close of the services, little Michael (Mikie) Earl Mathias was dedicated to the Lord by his parents, Jamie

and Brittney Mathias. His grandmother, Carol Mathias and other relatives were there to share this special occasion. Happy birthday to Katie Hopper, Glenn Claburn, Mark Stephens, Taylor Outlaw, Bradley Williams, Josh McClinton and Brenda Mitchell. We express our sympathy to Betty Morris and her family in the death of their mother, Mrs. Bessie Norris and our sympathy is extended to the family of Mrs. Mabel Williams. Bobby Jones from Tucker, GA. Visited with Dewey, Martha and Lorie Jones a few days last week. He took care of some business while here. The regular monthly service was held at Crestview recently with Brother Fred Campbell leading and Kathy Hopper assisting. Others there were Katie Hopper and Terry Brown. The sick are counting on us to go to the Great Physician on their behalf. Our friend, Dr. Rufus Taylor, has moved from Sugar Creek to an assisted living in Memphis to be near his

daughter. Keith (Bubba) Blackburn has been in the hospital with meningitis. He is a student at UT Knoxville. Viola Brown and Linda Hayes were able to attend church Sunday. Remember these along with Ted Mann, Judy Lewis, Ruth Taylor, Martha Overton, Fletcher Lewis and Annalee Myers. Others to include are Louise Coleman, Teresa Owen, Karen Conner, Rex Bond, Ginger Warren and Sandra Posey. Also include Betty Friend, Ray and Janie Hight and Sarah and Larry Key. I mentioned our granddaughter Heather Bolinger recently, an RN employed in the Maryville hospital. Parents are not to brag on their children, but grandparents are not bound that rule. Heather was recently credited with saving an 85-yearold lady’s life. She carefully monitored her after finding her pulse rate down to 40. When it went lower, Heather called in others to help. The lady flat-lined, but they got her to breathing again. She said, “Heather, you saved my life.”

ville - Eurekaton News “Circumstances change moment by moment, but God’s faithfulness never changes.” This is our Thought for the Week by Phillip Huber of New York as published in the Upper Room Devotional. Circumstances sometimes cloud our view of God, but we are reminded that behind these gray clouds is a God who is “our Savior and our strength.” He can empower us to withstand hardship and ensure us that all will be well in the end. As the clouds dissipate, eventually we will see the blue sky that is always there. Harmony Baptist Church will have a Children’s Sweetheart Banquet on Friday, February 10 and then on February 11, the Newlywed Game will be held. The Do-MeGood Travelers are getting geared up for the Brownsville Homecoming, which will be held on Saturday, February 4 at the Ann Marks Theater. We always have such a great time of praise and

When I began this column, I really had no idea what I would write about so I reverted to old news from 100 years ago. After reminiscing a bit I decided to go back and see what those articles said. The names are much more familiar to me now and I thought I might give you the chance to reminisce a bit too. Remember, the following is from 105 years ago in Stanton: “For its population, Stanton is one of the most prosperous business towns in West Tennessee, its commercial establishments being confined to one grand business square. It has one bank, the merchants carry large and well diversified stocks of goods, has cotton gin, dimensions stock wood manufacturing plant, large livery stable, hotel, churches and good schools. Its citizenry is intelligent and progressive, and are wide awake to the development of Stanton and the enlargement of their business interests.” “The Stanton Bank – Capital Stock, $15,000 Surplus and Undivided Profits, $1,199.37; A Well Managed Financial Institution. The Stanton Bank, the exclusive financial institution of our neighboring town of Stanton, which is the second largest commercial center of Haywood County, was founded in November, 1903. It filled a long felt want, and has met every obligation and demand encumbered of the situation to the present good day in a most satisfactory manner, and is quite popular with all those who come in contact with it in a business way.

It has a paid up capitol stock of $15,000, surplus and undivided profits of about $1,200, and deposits of about $25,000. Its beautiful and splendid brick home is herewith illustrated, while its collaterals, monies and all valuables are protected in one of the latest Mosler screw door time lock safe, which is situated in a fire and burglar proof vault. The following are the directors: F.D. Rawlins, Howell Taylor, J.F. Coppedge, J.T. Ruble, L.C. Newman and J.Y. Barbee, all able, substantial business men and capitalists. Mr. F.G. Rawlins, President, is properly spoken of elsewhere. Mr. J.K. Gibson, Cashier, was born in Nashville, and has held his official position with the bank since its original organization, prior to which time he was engaged in farming, and

still owns large farming interests. Mr. Gibson is an erudite gentleman, and quite popular with all who know him, and under his active administration The Stanton Bank has been a success. Mr. Gibson is a Methodist, Mason, K. of P. and K. of H.” The Mosler safe mentioned above along with the corner post of the building have been stored by your current mayor in hopes we may be able to rebuild this old bank building someday.
