The start of Round 3 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2012

Preview : Championship Battle Heats Up in Zhuhai Shanghai. After the opening rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia’s tenth triumphant season last month saw some of the most spectacular racing ever seen in Asia, the region’s premier sportscar series takes the championship battle to Southern China for Rounds 3 and 4 from June 1 to 3 at the 4.3km Zhuhai International Circuit. The exceptional Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car grid features an unrivalled line-up of international professionals and exciting newcomers, all eager to prove their mettle against seasoned veterans. Topping the leaderboard as the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia heads to Zhuhai is PICC Team StarChase driver Alexandre Imperatori, whose impressive pole position and two race wins in Shanghai makes the 24-year-old the driver to beat. With new reverse grid regulations for race two, the Shanghai-based Swiss star put on a dazzling display as he maneuvered his way through the hard-charging pack to grab his second victory of the weekend. Having seized victory in the opening rounds,

Imperatori’s rivals are determined to break his six-race winning streak, which began last August, and turn the tables in Zhuhai. Said reigning Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion, LKM Racing’s Keita Sawa of Japan, currently second in the overall title race: “Defending the championship is not going to be easy with so much talent and experience this season. Alexandre has so far set the pace, and now I must step up to the challenge and find a way to make up the seven points which separate our team and first place.” Sportscar and series newcomer Tung Ho-Ping, racing with Budweiser Team StarChase, lies third in the points. Tung’s eighth-place finish in Round 1 gave him pole position for the second race, where he took the final podium place. continued on page 2

continued from page 1 Fourth in the standings after a strong debut is fellow series newcomer, Benjamin Rouget of France with Team Yongda Dongfang, one of three new Porsche China dealer team entries. Also expected to be right on the pace in Zhuhai are Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila of Macau, and talented Austrian Martin Ragginger with new Porsche China dealer Team Eagle – Jiejun & Junbaojie. At the wheel of the Team

Carrera Cup Asia Porsche 911 GT3 Cup will be guest driver and 2004 champion Matthew Marsh. Reigning Class B champion, Wang Jian Wei of Team Betterlife, will be on the hunt for his first overall podium finish in Zhuhai, while Italian Davide Rizzo returns to the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia in Zhuhai, having won five Class B races in his Porsche Carrera Cup Asia debut in 2011. Fifth overall and second in the Class B title fight, one point behind Rizzo’s BBT team mate Anthony Liu of China, is series newcomer Egidio Perfetti with Seminole Racing Team. The Singapore-based driver made a stunning

debut in Shanghai, with a second-place finish in Round 1 and his first Porsche Carrera Cup Asia victory in Round 2. Currently third in Class B is Wayne Shen with Modena Motorsports, whose exciting battle with on-track rival Francis Tjia of OpenRoad Racing in Round 2 saw him earn the final Class B podium place. Qualifying and Round 3 of the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will be held on Saturday, June 2, while Round 2, where the top eight finishers in the first race will be reversed on the grid, will be held on Sunday, June 3.

PICC Team Starchase driver Alexandre Imperatori grabbed pole position in Round 3 of Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.

Qualifying : Imperatori Thunders to Pole after Electrifying Qualifying Session Zhuhai. Alexandre Imperatori maintained his perfect run in the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season by snatching pole position for the start of Round 3, edging out Team Eagle – Jiejun & Junbaojie driver Martin Ragginger. Third quickest overall around the 4.3km Zhuhai International Circuit was Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila of Macau, who vowed to find more from both himself and the car at his and his team’s home track. Fastest in the Class B category for non-professional drivers was series newcomer Huang Chu Han of China. New

to Porsche competition and the series, Huang has continued to impress, at one stage climbing to third overall on the time sheets. OpenRoad Racing’s Francis Tjia was second fastest in the class, with Dorr McElrea Racing’s Yuey Tan surviving an eventful session to set the third quickest time. Reigning Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion Keita Sawa, currently second in the points, had a disastrous session, spinning out on his first sighting lap and bringing out the red flag: “It was 100% my fault. They tyres were not warm enough and I tried to push too much. I want to give everyone an overtaking show in the race. Hopefully!” Said Imperatori: “It was tough, but I expected it to be. At Zhuhai, it’s very hard to pull a gap, and Martin (Ragginger) was getting very, very close. He’s always quick. I set a

good time on my first set of tyres, and then the red flag came out, but I’d already set a good time. I was watching the monitors and saw Martin did a very great job and got pretty anxious! I decided to out again on the second set, but it wasn’t needed in the end.” For Ragginger, it was a case of ‘close but no cigar’: “It was close but not close enough! I’m getting closer to Alex than in Shanghai. Zhuhai is one of the two tracks (on the calendar) I know, in Ordos I’ll also need to learn the circuit. We lost a lot of points in Shanghai, so we need to earn points back. I need to get used to the car as I race a lot of different cars, so I need more confidence earlier.” continued on page 3

continued from page 2 Team Jebsen’s Avila was characteristically tough on himself: “The session could have been better for us. We’re six or seven tenths off pole, and not driving our best. The set up today was very good and the car felt good, but we need to improve the car and the driving!” Huang meanwhile was rightly delighted with his performance: “My first time out, there was a lot of traffic, but while they were changing their tyres, I went out again and did two laps and put in a good time. I know I need to be careful in the race though as I’m up against professionals. I’m pleased I’ve adapted so quickly to the car, and I have the confidence to do well.” Imperatori shot to the top of the timing sheets at the start of the 30 minute session to determine the start order of Round 3 with a lap of 1:38.198, but Ragginger was hot on his heels from the off. The Austrian snatched provisional pole with a scorching lap of less than 1:38, but Imperatori was not done and reclaimed the top spot with a lap which coulnd’t be bettered despite Ragginger’s best efforts. After a hard-fought qualifying session, the stage is set for a truly unforgettable race, with the extreme heat and humidity meaning concentration and physical fitness will be key. Round 3 will be run over 12 laps of the Zhuhai International Circuit, with the top eight finishers reversed on the grid for the start of Sunday’s Round 4. (Top) Keita Sawa spun out on his first sighting lap in qualifying.

(L to R) Rodolfo Avila, Alexandre Imperatori, Benjamin Rouget on the podium after Round 3.

Round 3 : Imperatori Prevails Amid Drama Zhuhai. Alexandre Imperatori was wheel-perfect as he converted his pole position into a third successive victory in Round 3 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, however he was lucky to be ahead of a multi-car incident off the start and into the notorious first turn, which saw the race stopped. Second on the podium at the end of the shortened, 9-lap race was Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila, with Benjamin Rouget taking a well-earned maiden podium for new China Porsche dealer team, Team Yongda Dongfang. In Class B, it was a surprised and delighted Egidio Perfetti who took his second win in succession, propelling him to the top of the category leaderboard and fourth overall in the title chase. Perfetti had qualified fifth quickest in Class B. Second was Modena Motorsports’ Wayne Shen of Hong Kong, with series newcomer Zheng Ting taking

his maiden series podium with BBT. Imperatori’s win, plus the extra point for pole positions, strengthens his championship lead. Keita Sawa’s extraordinary performance in Round 3, where he came from the back of the grid to finish 7th, sees him maintain his second place in the title chase, albeit now 18 points adrift of Imperatori. Rouget was thrilled to have taken his first Porsche Carrera Cup Asia podium finish, and relieved to have avoided the incident at the start: “I was really focused on my own performance, but I saw three cars in front of me spin and just avoided the incident. Someone touched me, but luckily there was only slight damage.” Said a thrilled Perfetti: “I’m a little surprised as I didn’t qualify well. I survived the start (incident), and then after the re-start I really got it going and was doing faster laps than in qualifying. I hope to keep this (form) going!” Imperatori got away well from pole, with Avila and Team Eagle – Jiejun & Junbaojie ace Martin Ragginger also making good getaways. However, a brash move by newcomer Huang Chu Han, who had qualified an impressive fifth, sparked a dramatic incident involving almost half the field. Huang shunted into Ragginger, catapulting the Austrian’s car into Avila. Avila

got away with body damage to his Team Jebsen car, but it was race over for Ragginger. The race was stopped, and marshals worked frantically to clear the track of stranded cars and debris. Restarting under the Safety Car, Imperatori again made a great getaway and began pulling out a lead at the front to cross the line with a margin of more than four seconds. Avila held on to second from Rouget, while behind them guest driver Matthew Marsh was piling the pressure onto Team Betterlife’s Wang Jian Wei. Behind them, the action continued, with reigning champion Keita Sawa, who had adeptly avoided the earlier pile-up, climbing from the back of the grid to cross the line 7th, having got by BBT driver Davide Rizzo in the closing stages of the race. The excitement is set to continue for Round 4, with the new reverse grid rule seeing Davide Rizzo start from pole, with LKM Racing Team’s Sawa alongside. Championship leader Imperatori will start from the fourth row alongside Avila, setting the stage for a heart-pumping start.

PICC Team StarChase driver Alexandre Imperatori earned his fourth consecutive win of the 2012 season at the Zhuhai International Circuit

Round 4 : Imperatori Continues Unbroken Run after Briliant Race Zhuhai. Alexandre Imperatori of PICC Team StarChase continued his charge towards the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia title today by taking his fourth victory in as many races. Despite starting from 8th, under the top eight reverse grid regulation, he not only powered his way into the lead mid-way through the 12-lap race, but had pulled out a margin of almost two seconds by the chequered flag at the Zhuhai International Circuit. Second across the line after a truly thrilling race was reigning champion Keita Sawa of the LKM Racing Team, who had overcome a disastrous qualifying session to charge to 7th in Round 3, putting him alongside pole-sitter Davide Rizzo of BBT for the start of Round 4. Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila took the final podium place, an impressive result having started from the 4th row of the grid.

Egidio Perfetti of the Seminole Racing Team continued his impressive series debut with his third successive Class B win, with Modena Motorsports’ Wayne Shen in second, and another newcomer, Huang Chu Han in third. Imperatori now has a 20 point lead at the top of the overall championship standings from Sawa, with Benjamin Rouget in third. Perfetti’s brilliant results give him a 13 point lead from Wayne Shen in Class B, with Zheng Ting third. Said Imperatori, who repeated his astonishing performance in Shanghai where he also thundered his way from 8th on the grid to snatch victory: “I was pushing very hard and on the attack right from the start. It’s important to do as much as you can as soon as possible before anyone has the chance to pull out a gap. We honestly didn’t expect to be able to win as it’s very difficult to overtake here, but it went perfectly.” Avila was delighted with his points haul from two podium finishes, and glad he had resisted the temptation to push too hard to overtake Sawa in the closing stages: “Davide (Rizzo) gave us a really good battle, but I was

on new tyres and was pushing really hard. I was looking at overtaking Sawa but I made a mistake on the last corner which could have cost me the race, and we need the points.” Rizzo got away well from pole and held the lead from the charging pack, with Team BetterLife’s Wang Jian Wei mounting an early assault on Team Carrera Cup Asia guest driver Matthew Marsh, getting by to go third on the opening lap. Imperatori and Avila too were locked in battle from the go, and made contact going into Turn 1, neither sustaining damage. At the end of lap 1, Rizzo held the lead from Sawa, who was hot on his heels, with Wang, Marsh, Team Yongda Dongfang’s Benjamin Rouget in hot pursuit. Imperatori had begun his climb through the field and was already up to 6th. Lap 3 saw first Sawa make his move on Rizzo to grab the lead, then Imperatori storm up to 2nd in the order, with Avila in 4th but closing in fast on the Italian. continued on page 7

continued from page 6 Wang meanwhile was also on a charge, determined to get by Rouget, but it was all for naught when he flat-spotted his tyres and retired with a puncture. Imperatori was unstoppable, closing in to Sawa and diving by to take the lead he would hold until the flag. Next it was Avila looming large in the mirrors of the reigning champion, the Macau racer having finally got by Rizzo after a superb battle. Sawa held firm though, and with his priorities set on championship points, Avila settled for 3rd. Team Eagle – Jiejun & Junbaojie ace Martin Ragginger was another man on the move, rocketing from the 9th row of the grid to 5th mid-way through the race, and crossing the line 4th. The Austrian also set the fastest lap of the race. Rizzo eventually finished 5th after holding off Rouget in the closing stages. The region’s premier sportscar championship is back in action next month, with the mentally and physically taxing twists of the Ordos International Circuit in Inner Mongolia, presenting the 28-strong field with a whole new set of challenges. Rounds 5 and 6 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will be held from July 6-8, when the thrilling battle for the tenth championship title will resume.
