MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR VILLAGE OF CARP BIA

Throughout this very snowy winter season, there has been an undeniable energy in Carp. Our community continues to grow and thrive with new restaurants opening, new businesses launching, and the Carp Commons Retirement Village set to open in March. Having more opportunities to shop and eat local is certainly something to celebrate! In this issue of the Villager, we bring you a feature on the new Ridge Rock Brewing Company, as well as the Carp mainstay Pawsh Pets, and an updated Carp Business map. If we missed your business, please contact our team at carpvillager@gmail.com. If your business would like to be featured in our next edition, please do not hesitate to reach out. All the best, and until next time.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Pawsh Pets

Heather Beach and Shane Sinclair opened Pawsh Pets in December 2014. Their passion for pets is evident in every aspect of their business; from their grooming services, to the high-quality accessories they offer, to the three Canadian pet food brands available in the boutique. Heather and Shane know your furry family member is important, below are their tips to keeping them healthy and happy through the long winter months.

Tell us the story behind Pawsh Pets. How long have you been open, and why did you choose Carp? I grew up in Carp, my family farm is located just outside of the village, so I have seen the community grow over the years. When the opportunity to build a business in my hometown came up - something I've always wanted to do - I went for it. I'm proud to say we've been open for four years. Winter is a long season, and our pets are in close contact with the snow, ice and salt. How can we best protect them from the elements? Quite often we hear about dogs being very sensitive to the extreme cold temperatures we have been

having, and especially to the salt that is used for driveways and sidewalks. A great way to keep their paws protected is a good quality bootie - if your dog will tolerate wearing them - although usually once they get moving they realize it feels a lot better than the ice and salt! For those dogs who won't wear booties, you can try a paw wax to help protect and soothe their paws from the harsh elements. For the extra furry dogs who get snowballs stuck between their toes, having their feet trimmed up is a quick and easy job and keeps the snow from building up between their toes. It’s also worth noting that a dog’s toenails don’t wear down as naturally as they do when they can walk on the pavement during the non-winter months. Keeping their nails maintained nice and short is a very important part of your dog's overall health; so regular nail trims are also a great idea!

Spring will be here soon, and the new season brings mud, burrs and shedding pets. What are your top products to keep our furry friends looking fantastic?

For the mud, there are a couple of brands of boots that can help prevent your dog from becoming a muddy mess, while also helping them grip while out exploring trails.

A few favourite products to always have on hand: a slicker brush has multiple uses but is especially good at gently tackling burrs. The slicker is also a great one for medium to longer coated, heavy shedding dogs as it really gets to the undercoat.

Grooming wipes and a good absorbing door or crate mat, such as the Dirty Dog Mats or the Amazing Mats, are great for helping with muddy paws at the door. On rainy days and muddy days I have a Chilly Dogs rain slicker to help keep my pup dry. These tips are great for everyday use, however nothing beats a good thorough grooming job on a regular basis, to keep your dog's coat healthy and clean. It’s a good way to pick up any signs of health challenges arising that may otherwise be missed, such as hot spots, which are common in the warmer, wetter months.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Ridge Rock Brewing Company

Tell us about your beer! How did you settle on your types, and do you see Ridge Rock expanding into further varieties?

Why did you feel Carp needed a Brewery? All four owners of Ridge Rock are born and raised in the area. We felt that Carp was the perfect spot for a place where locals could go to talk about family, sports, the weather, and just relax and catch up. We wanted to create a space where we could not only craft world class beers, but where we can also host local talent and events for the community.

One of Carp’s newest businesses, Ridge Rock Brewing Company, opened in September in a location that has a long history in the community. Once a bank, gas station, drug store and Chrysler dealership, the building Ridge Rock calls home has been at the centre of Carp for generations; a tradition the brewery is continuing – holding a fundraiser for tornado relief their opening weekend! Ryan Grassie, one of the four owners of Ridge Rock, shares why friendship, community and passion are key ingredients for Carp’s latest place to pop in for a pint.

The bar and tables are made from wood from one of my co-owner's farm, the foot rail at the bar comes from the old railway track, our graffiti wall was done by a local artist and the historical society was kind enough to donate photos.

Community is clearly a priority for Ridge Rock. From the location, to memorabilia and fixtures in the brewery, you have integrated history into many aspects of the business. Why was that important to you?

We are extremely proud of our beer. The underlying feel of our beer is clean and approachable. We felt that there were some trends in the industry where it was almost a competition as who could pack the most amount of hops into a beer. We are not that brewery. We have a fantastic IPA for the hoppy beer lovers; but even it is very approachable. Our blonde is our gateway beer - that is to say it converts Coors and Bud drinkers to the craft beer side.

Community is huge for us. We tried very hard to keep as much of the aura of the old building as we could while also making the atmosphere inviting and relaxing. The history of Huntley and Carp is very interesting and we showcase aspects of it throughout the building wherever we can.

Our Amber (my personal favourite) is the top seller on tap at outside establishments now, while our Irish stout is easy drinking, with a great mouth feel and crisp finish. We are continuously rolling out new varieties, but these staple beers will remain. What does the future hold for Ridge Rock? Are there any special projects you have in the works? We are working on some really exciting new projects but they are TOP secret. Look for them to be launching in the coming months. We have some great live, local music and events planned for the next few months, so keep checking the website for updates.

HELP MAKE THE CARP FITNESS PARK A REALITY! Carp Health Access, in partnership with the City of Ottawa, is fundraising for a project that will see the installation of stationary, outdoor fitness equipment that can be utilized by all ages in Langstaff Park.

Due to the tornado in September, we had to postpone our fundraiser but are thrilled that we've finally been able to reschedule. It will be held on Thursday, March 28th at the brand new Carp Commons Retirement Village complex at 458 Donald B. Munro Drive. Register to attend, see link below or visit www.bit.ly/2I7NX2V.

FUNDRAISING GOAL: Since starting our fundraising efforts in June of last year, Carp Health Access has raised $20,391 of the required $38,000 to get the park built! Only $17,609 to go! The City will match these funds and then undertake the installation of the equipment. If you are an individual or a business who would like to donate, we would greatly appreciate your support! Donors of $1000 or more will receive recognition on a plaque at the site of the park, as well as a plaque they can display in their home or office, and recognition on our website and social media pages. If you cannot attend the event but would like to donate, please click the button below or go to www.carphealthaccess.ca/support-us.php to donate online. Ideally, we'd love to have all funds raised by the end of April 2019. Any amount is appreciated! We hope you will take the opportunity to come out to learn more about the initiative and show your support along with other Carp residents and businesses from the community. It's also a great excuse to check out the newest addition to the village Carp Commons Retirement Village. Please share this invitation with any and all who may be interested in attending. The more, the merrier!
