MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR VILLAGE OF CARP BIA

It’s hard to believe we are almost at the end of 2019. This year has flown by, and the end of school in June seems like just yesterday. Twenty nineteen has seen many changes throughout Carp, new businesses have opened, some have changed ownership, but above all, the community remains committed to supporting those who live and work here. With fall coming to a close (we’ve already had our first snowfall!) the holiday season is fast approaching, with craft fairs, baked goods and Santa Claus parades filling our calendars. You can find a full list of upcoming activities in the Event Listing. In this issue, we will also profile two local businesses; the Tara Lund Music Academy and West Physio. As always, if your business would like to be featured in our next edition, please do not hesitate to reach out. As the days get shorter and the temperature drops, The Village of Carp BIA wishes you a happy, safe and cozy holiday season.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT West Physio | Lisa Kyte

You’ve owned and operated West Physio for almost 30 years, what have been some of the greatest challenges and triumphs of being a business owner for so many years? The greatest triumph has been gaining the trust of the community. To be able to keep them active and to give them the ability to do what they love to do. My greatest challenge was keeping my business when I moved away with my family for eleven years. I was so lucky to have Sheila Killeen - and the rest of the team - manage West Physio as their own during that time.

You are an active part of the Carp community, how has the village and fellow Carp residents impacted West Physio over the years?

What is your favourite part of being a physiotherapist? How would you encourage others looking to get into the field?

many areas of expertise and do you foresee any new areas of expertise becoming available in the future?

We started out just as a physiotherapy clinic, and it continues to be the main source of business for West Physio. Over the years we have added additional services including massage, acupuncture, shockwave therapy etc. to provide additional services to the community.

The best thing about being a physiotherapist is getting to work with people and making a difference in their lives. My favourite part is helping people get back to doing what they love; whether it be gardening, playing with their grandkids or their favourite sport. Another great part of my job is mentoring new physiotherapists and growing a team to serve our community.

We are thrilled about our new venture which will provide services to the residents and community; West Physio Spa, which is located in the beautiful new Carp Commons, has multiple services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, foot care services, massage, esthetics, hair services, chiropractic and medical spa services.

Our other main focus is to provide specialty programs such as post-surgical hip and knee replacement therapy, pelvic floor and lymphedema management to our community, as they were previously available only in the city.

You offer quite a wide range of services, from physiotherapy, to acupuncture, to nutrition counselling. What has led you to expand to so

We are just getting started and look forward to providing additional services to the community!

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Tara Lund Music School | Tara Lund What advice can you give to parents to inspire their children to practice? How long should someone practice every day? Every student will differ in their priorities, available time, learning abilities and musical expectations.

You’ve been a music teacher for almost 30 years. What led you to become a music teacher, and what has inspired you to keep teaching? I grew up being surrounded by music, which led me to start piano lessons at six, and guitar lessons as a teenager. This led me to get a degree in Music and become a Qualified Elementary School teacher back home in Ireland. I taught hundreds of children with varied musical abilities and experienced the impact it had on them, not just as musicians - but on their wellbeing. I love teaching music and I knew early on that I was going to teach music for a long time. When I first started teaching piano, I was teaching the way I was taught. What I gradually started to realize was how much of music had been left out of my own early music education. No one had ever encouraged me to compose, taught me to play pop tunes by ear or allowed me to improvise and embellish melodies. I decided I wanted to pass on this ability, but also so much more! I continuously bridge the link between traditional methods and more relaxed modern approaches. What I do at my Studio is to open students up to their own musical journey. What’s going to really inspire each student is going to be different. My job is to open the doors.

My view of practicing is quality over quantity. Ask yourself “Have I improved from when I started my practice to when I finished?” Small improvements turn into big improvements. This is a very rough guide and really needs to be tailored for each student. • 3 - 5 years old | Low to No practice but up to 10 mins when they want to play • 5 – 7 years old | 10 to 15 mins up to 4 days a week • 8 – 12 years old | 20 – 30 mins up to 5 days a week • Teenagers and Adults | 30 mins or more up to 5 days a week • Exam students | Up to 1 hour or more per day depending on their level For students who are keen to complete both their theory and performance Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) exams, what performance opportunities do you offer to your students?

I offer many different opportunities, all of which are optional. My formal recital in June takes place at our local Church which can accommodate an audience of up to 150 people. Some of the higher-level students have taken part in the Kiwanis Festival with great results! Alice’s Café in Carp often lets me bring small numbers of students to play in an informal setting, which is just so much fun. Every Christmas students are invited to play at a local senior’s home, and this year we are going to the Carp Commons in December. Many people associate piano lessons with classical music. Do you offer lessons in other genres such as jazz? Absolutely. I am very keen to teach all musical genres. My students play jazz pieces and pop songs as well as the great classical masters. Anything is possible and I do my very best to learn about all the different methods and styles available worldwide. This is what I call a well-rounded musical education that helps them perform confidently, teaches them to write their own music, play with great technique, get great exam results and enjoy collaborating with other musicians. 10 reasons to come to Tara Lund Music Studio • Students leave their lesson beaming each week and are excited to share their work at home

This is so important for all students, whether they are taking exams or not.
