A MINDSET OF LONG-TERM GROWTH There is no set formula for managing your wealth. Financial instruments change. Investment strategies come and go. But at H.M. Payson, we believe there are certain core values that never go out of style: personal service, scrupulous research, and an attention to detail that favors long-term growth over short-term fashion. If this sounds good to you, learn how we can tailor an investment approach that can stand the test of time. Call us.

Director’s Note I first saw Les Misérables over 20 years ago. It astounds me that a show that has been around for so long can still have such a huge emotional impact when you work on it. You would think that by now, after seeing it dozens of times, it would almost feel like “old news”… and yet, it seems to grow more powerful. I think, in part, the struggle to find hope in the face of huge misery is our instinct as human beings and it threads through every fiber of this story. At its heart, the show has a sweeping romantic arc that carries over and around the darkness. In short, it is an honor to be a part of presenting this treasured classic to our audiences. For those who have seen it before, especially here… thank you for giving us the opportunity to present the story “our way.” As you know, here at MSMT, we strive to create each show with its own esthetic, style and flavor. (Why would you want to see something done exactly the same way you have seen it before?) Our challenge with this production was to make it fresh for those who have seen the “original” as well as for those that have seen it HERE five years ago. It is my opinion, that each show is special and unique because no two casts are the same. This company of actor/singers is astonishing. They bring such great passion to the art in each of their performances and I have continued to marvel at their process since the first day of rehearsal. They have strived to find the heart, humanity, hope and “light” that is at the end of the tunnel in this very dark story. They have been willing to put their “souls” on the line and I ultimately thank them for the gift of collaborating with each one of them. I am so proud to present this version to our audiences. The set, lights, costume design and all that goes along with the collective whole of designing and orchestrating a theatrical experience, has been rewarding and enriching for all who have been working on presenting this show to you. To the designers, artists, and finally, to you our audience, thank you for this tremendous experience. We hope you will be transported!!! – Marc Robin, Director

About Bowdoin College

South Boston Pier, 1896, watercolor and graphite. Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, Massachusetts. Purchased with the Charles B. Hoyt Fund.

One of the oldest colleges in the nation, Bowdoin College received its charter in 1794 from Governor Samuel Adams when Maine was a district of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The College was named for former Massachusetts governor James Bowdoin II, whose son, James Bowdoin III, was an early benefactor. In 1970 Bowdoin became the first highly selective college in America to make the SAT optional for admissions, and in 1971, Bowdoin admitted its first class of women. Today, the College enrolls approximately 1,750 students from around the world and offers small classes, opportunities for independent study, and a 9:1 student faculty ratio. A Bowdoin liberal arts education and residential experience are focused on instilling principled leadership, lifelong learning, and service to the common good. Notable alumni include 14th U.S. President Franklin Pierce (class of 1824); writers Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (both 1825); African-American newspaper editor John Brown Russwurm (1826); Civil War leaders Oliver Otis Howard (1850) and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (1852); Arctic explorer Robert E. Peary (1877); former U.S. Senate Majority Leader, architect of the Ireland peace accord, and U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace George J. Mitchell (1954); former U.S. Senator and Secretary of Defense William Cohen (1962); American Express chairman and CEO Kenneth I. Chenault (1973); author and educator Geoffrey Canada (1974); ABC Nightline host Cynthia McFadden; Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson (1979); and Netflix founder and CEO Reed Hastings (1983).

The Angels The MSMT Angels is a volunteer auxiliary that carries out a wide variety of activities in support of the Maine State Music Theatre. We form the core of the theatre’s ushering staff and have an active program to support the theatre’s interns. Many of our members transport cast members and production staff to and from the airport, bus terminal and train station; others distribute posters and brochures for display in stores and restaurants in a wide area throughout Brunswick, and beyond. Angels also provide food and support for the stage crew during strike weekends. Each season we contribute a lot of our time and energy to MSMT, but being an Angel has very special rewards: we usher on opening nights and have seats to see the show; we attend the cast parties; and we host an annual dinner for the interns. Best of all, our activities give us a great chance to get to know the cast and crew, who invariably are wonderful people! If you’d like to know more about us, contact Chari Burdick (725-7068; msmtangels@yahoo.com). You can also, of course, ask any usher who is wearing an Angels name tag. Tim Weinzetl, President

ALAIN BOUBLIL (Book, Les Misérables) Alain Boublil’s first musical, La Revolution Française in 1973, marked his transition from songwriting to musical theatre and the start of his collaboration with Claude-Michel Schönberg with the hit album that became the first ever staged French musical. His idea of writing a musical version of Les Misérables brought them together again in 1978. The acclaimed show was written over a two-year period and recorded as an album before its opening at the Palais de Sports in Paris in September 1980. In 1983 Mr. Boublil met Cameron Mackintosh which led to his first London production Abbacadabra (a musical fairy-tale set to ABBA music) and to working with Claude-Michel and directors and writers on the English language adaptation of Les Misérables. The show has subsequently opened in 19 countries and 14 languages. Among the many awards Mr. Boublil has received were two Tony Awards in 1987 for Best Score and Best Book for the NY production *MEMBER OF ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION

Who’s Who and a 1988 Grammy for the Best Original Broadway Cast Recording which he co-produced with Claude-Michel Schönberg. Miss Saigon opened on September 20, 1989 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London and on April 11, 1991 in NY. The show has also played in Tokyo and Toronto with future production scheduled for Sydney, Australia and Stuttgart, Germany. Mr. Boublil will maintain a close association with all the international productions of Les Misérables and Miss Saigon while working with Claude-Michel on the screenplays for motion picture versions of both musicals. CLAUDE-MICHEL SCHÖNBERG (Book and Music, Les Misérables) Claude-Michel Schönberg is a successful record producer and songwriter who began his collaboration with Alain Boublil in 1973, writing the very first French musical, La Revolution Française. Mr. Schönberg played the role of Louis XVI in that production and also co-produced the double-gold record album of the show. In 1974, he recorded an album, singing his own compositions and lyrics, which included the number one hit single Le Premier Pas. In 1980, after two years’ work on the score, Mr. Schönberg and Mr. Boublil’s musical Les Misérables opened in Paris, where it was seen by more than 1.5 million people. In 1983, Mr. Schönberg produced an opera album in Paris with Julia Migenes Johnson and the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. Following work on the London production of Les Misérables (the 3rd longest running musical in British theatre history), Mr. Schönberg co-produced the double-platinum London cast album and became involved in casting all the major overseas productions of the show, including the American, Japanese and Australian companies. He won two coveted Tony Awards, for Best Score and Book, for the Broadway production of Les Misérables and a Grammy Award for the Best Original Cast Recording, which he co-produced with Alain Boublil. He also worked closely on the symphonic recording of the show. His score for Miss Saigon, again written in collaboration with Alain Boublil, is now repeating the international success story of Les Misérables. Produced by Cameron Mackintosh and again bringing together many members of the creative team behind Les Misérables, Miss Saigon opened with huge success at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London in September 1989, in NY in April 1991, in Tokyo in May 1992 and in Chicago (the first national U.S. tour) in November 1992. Future productions will open in Sydney, Australia and Stuttgart, Germany. Now Claude-Michel is back at the keyboards, composing their next musical, Martin Guerre, while keeping close eye on the development of the screenplays for Les Misérables and Miss Saigon. HERBERT KRETZMER (Lyrics) Herbert Kretzmer, born in South Africa, came to London in 1954, and has since pursued twin careers as a newspaperman and songwriter. He was a feature writer at the Daily Sketch and a profile writer at the Sunday Dispatch. He joined the Daily Express in 1960 and later became its drama critic, a post he held for 18 years. Since 1979 he has been writing TV criticism for the Daily Mail and has won, in this capacity, two national press awards. As a lyric writer he wrote weekly songs for BBC-TV’s That Was The Week That Was. He won an Ivor Novello Award for the Peter Sellers/Sophia Loren comedy song Goodness Gracious Me. Other award-winning lyrics include two written for Charles Aznavour: Yesterday When I Was Young and the chart-topping She. Mr. Kretzmer wrote book and lyrics for the West End’s Our Man Crichton, which starred Kenneth More and Millicent Martin, and lyrics for the Theatre Royal Drury Lane’s The Four Musketeers. Annual Donors Maine State Music Theatre extends our deepest gratitude to all our generous donors. Without their help MSMT would not be able to present the incredible production you are enjoying today. The cost to produce four professional musicals in just twelve weeks is far beyond the revenue generated from sold out houses at our current ticket price. Thanks to the kindness of these donors, as well as our sponsors and advertisers, we are able to keep our ticket prices lower than many of our peers and at around one third the price of a Broadway ticket. Help us to show our appreciation by thanking them for supporting MSMT. If you are not a donor, we hope you will consider us as you make your charitable gifts. Not only will you be helping MSMT continue to bring Broadway to Brunswick, but you will be providing the next generation of theatre professionals the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the business as they spend their summers as interns, apprentices and journeymen. You will also ensure that we can continue to offer “pay what you can” specials on the first Friday of each show and student rush tickets. Sincerely, Stephanie Dupal, Interim Executive Director Curt Dale Clark, Artistic Consultant INDIVIDUALS ANNUAL CAMPAIGN (** Indicates MSMT Trustee *Indicates MSMT Advisor) MSMT is grateful to the following individuals and organizations who have contributed $100 or more to our Individual Campaign. LEAVING A LEGACY: As a nonprofit organization, MSMT has always depended on support and gifts from our family and friends. Fifty-five years is a long time to have kept Victoria Crandall’s dream of resident musical theatre in Brunswick, Maine the reality that we enjoy today. Recognized by actors, technicians, and audiences alike, MSMT is one of the largest and most valuable arts organizations in the State of Maine and plays to over 55,000 patrons each summer. Planned gifts are a vital source of support to all aspects of our operation – from actors’ salaries and production costs to our education and outreach programs. By providing for the Theatre in your estate plan, you can help preserve the beauty and magic of our cultural treasure. These gifts will not only leave a lasting tribute but they also have a tremendous effect on future generations that will come through the doors of the Theatre. Assure that MSMT is here for future audiences by informing us in writing that you have included Maine State Music Theatre in your estate plans. Including MSMT in your trusts or as partial beneficiaries of retirement accounts or insurance policies means that this theatre, that means so much to so many, will continue to shine and inspire for years to come. We thank you for considering it and for making such a difference! For more information, call Barbara Whidden at 207-725-8760, extension 15.

Interns & Apprentices Each season, college and post-graduate theatre students from across the country participate as performance, technical, and arts management interns. They receive free room and a weekly stipend for food and incidentals, and can earn college credit. Performance and stage-management interns may earn Equity Membership Candidacy points. Curt Dale Clark is the 2013 Education/ Intern Director. The Gregg Marriner Memorial Foundation (since 1987), established by Norman and Barbara Marriner in honor of their son, provides a financial award to the Outstanding Technical Intern of the summer. The Kenison Award, under the stewardship of Homer and Prisca Kenison, was established in 2005 to provide financial assistance to the Most Promising Performance Intern. The Angels’ Memorial Fund Award – in honor of deceased angels – is given to an intern who exhibits extraordinary attributes that set her/him apart. The MSMT apprentices are experienced performers, administrators and technical staff who are just beginning their careers in professional theatre. MSMT’s apprentice program offers them the opportunity to work alongside seasoned veterans in their field and make connections that foster their future careers. Many of our apprentices began as interns and have returned to MSMT with more experience after deciding to pursue their passion for working in the theatre.

While The Highlands was the first retirement community in the Midcoast region to offer Assisted Living, there are so many more options now. Life changes, so we have many different levels of support and services bridging the gap between fully independent living and the need for higher levels of care. It’s for the individual who realizes the benefits of living within a supportive environment of peers, along with a life enrichment program designed to meet the residents’ individual needs. The result is peace of mind for the resident and for their family. The Highlands of Topsham was founded over 20 years ago by Maine resident John Wasileski, who is recognized as the pre-eminent originator of active lifestyle and retirement communities in the state. He has created an environmentally responsible, cutting edge community that combines nature, recreation, energy efficiency and carefree living in The Highlands. Our models are open 9:00 -5:00 Monday through Friday, 10:00-4:00 Saturday and Sundays by appointment. Stop by or give us a call at 1-888-760-1042 or 207-725-2640 to arrange for a private tour of our campus at 30 Governors Way, Topsham. Or visit our website at www.highlandsrc.com. As a proud and dedicated sponsor of MSMT for over 20 years, we invite you to enjoy the show! 72
